  • Let's learn how to cook spelt! BASIC RECIPE ⬇️⬇️⬇️ (see below)
    This instant pot recipe for beginners makes it easy. 😄 I love cooking spelt kernels in the instant pot and using them for my whole food plant based meal prep. They're delicious, nutritious, and great for anyone cooking whole food plant based on a budget. Cook them with me, and find out why it's important to soak them first. 🌱 Hope you enjoy!

    🌱 Basic recipe for Spelt Berries in the Instant Pot:
    Rinse spelt berries thoroughly (or soak in filtered water for 12 hours with lemon or apple cider vinegar, then rinse again thoroughly after soaking)
    1:1.5 spelt* to water ratio (for this video I used 1 cup spelt and 1.5 cups water) If you want to use more spelt, make sure you increase the amount of water accordingly (i.e. 2 cups spelt would require 3 cups water, etc.)
    Cook on manual (high pressure) for 30 mins. (I usually take it off of "keep warm")
    Let pressure release naturally (until the pin drops)
    Enjoy!
    *If you pre-soak the spelt, there will be water left over in pot after cooking (using this ratio). If you do not pre-soak your spelt, there will not be any water left over in the pot after cooking.

      Hi Maddie B, the spelt turned out great! I made a big batch and am eating it with chili. I’m thinking about preparing some of it like oatmeal, with plant milk, cinnamon and apples. Thanks again!

      @@danidaw32 So good to hear! Yes, I think having it as a breakfast option (like oatmeal) is a great idea as well... and with adding apples and cinnamon!? YUMMMMM! Good thinking! :)

    Thank you. 30 minutes in the Instant Pot made some fabulous cooked spelt! I have my own flour mill and grind spelt for flour all the time, but only a few days ago did I consider if it could be cooked, as a far more sustainable grain vs quinoa. I'm hooked on it immediately!

      Wow!!! You’re so lucky to be able to grind your own spelt flour! I love spelt bread! And I’m so glad to hear this video worked out for you. Yes, spelt is lovely as a cooked grain. I really prefer it over most of the other grains! So pleased that you enjoyed it as well. 😊😊💕🌱 Thank you so much for your comment.

    Do you notice a difference between soaked and not soaked on texture, flavor or digestibility ? Thanks so much!

    • @LetsEatPlants
      @LetsEatPlants  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes the soaked cooks faster and I noticed it’s a bit softer. It’s easier to digest as well! Worth it to soak if you have the time, IMO. 😊

    I’m Coeliac so no Spelt for me.
    Have you tried Teff? It’s healthy and something different to use.
    Millet is good too 😊

    I grabbed a bag of spelt berries in my pantry that I had bought awhile back and decided to make some in the instapot. It was meant to be because your video was just posted! I am also plant based and I am trying to eat more whole foods! Excited to find your channel!

    So it can be a replacement for regular white rice? What is the taste like?

    • @LetsEatPlants
      @LetsEatPlants  3 роки тому

      It definitely can! It doesn’t taste the same or have quite the same texture, but it certainly can be used in place of white rice for a healthier option. 😊 It tastes a bit nutty, and is a bit chewy... I would say it’s kind of similar to brown rice!

    Informative. Sort of long though. I missed how much water and grain measurements.

      @@LetsEatPlants So how much water is it just enough to cover the berries for 30 min.

    • @LetsEatPlants
      @LetsEatPlants  Рік тому +1

      @@BEandME2020 It’s in the description box. 😄 1 c. grain: 1.5 c. water. If you’re cooking more grain, increase the quantity of water following 1:1.5 ratio (i.e. 2 c. grain + 3 c. water, etc.). 😊

    The reason why I want to eat more spelt instead of rice, is because its impact on the environment is lower.

    Is spelt the same as kamut?

    • @LetsEatPlants

      Nope, they are different! They do look verrryyy similar though. 😄😄 I often get them mixed up in my pantry. 😊

    • @jennifergriffin8997
      @jennifergriffin8997 3 роки тому +1

      @@LetsEatPlants Do you know how to tell when kamut is done? I did 45 min high pressure instant pot and I can't tell if they are fully cooked!

    • @LetsEatPlants
      @LetsEatPlants  3 роки тому +2

      @@jennifergriffin8997 I think that should be more than fully cooked! The instant pot timetable says 10-12 minutes on high pressure. 😄 It is a very chewy grain, even when fully cooked, so don’t worry if it seems chewy. As long as there are not hard bits in the grains it should be good!
