  • Old maps often have curious things on them, which lead us back to a different age. Join me as I discover what some of these things were, and what is left today.
In this episode I visit the cliffs on the eastern edge of Charles Neville's "Garden City by the Sea": Peacehaven (previously known as New Anzac-on-Sea). Maps from the 1920's show there to be a whole estate of roads here, almost a town in its own right, but there are only a few scattered houses and dirt tracks now. So what happened and why wasn't the area developed?
I’d like to thank everyone who has helped me with this video, especially the members of the Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs history group on Facebook, who gave me loads of useful information. Finally, I’m not an historian, so I apologise if anything in this video is totally incorrect, I’ll leave the experts to what they do best and hope the rest of you gained some knowledge!
Fun fact not mentioned in the video: Mr Bean Episode 1 was filmed here!
Fun fact 2: the weather was very windy when this was filmed, so apologies for the wobbly camera in places, the stabilising device was being blown about!

Very interesting seeing this. I do a lot of mapping on OpenStreetMap in the are and there is an overlay for ultimately Land registry title borders. I have previously seen these on the east side of Peacehaven and each of these plots and road layouts are still have their own legal titles and therefor can still be seen. I might map some of these "roads" or tracks that never made it to OSM since the OS maps are now out of copyright. I initially thought it was a post war "green belt" thing that stopped the development, but thanks to this video I now know a lot more of the history of this area. Also there is a similar thing between the B2036, M23 and Antlands Road with old road layouts and plots on seemingling undeveloped fields & woodland, this is just inside West Sussex, however is on the North side of the old Sussex/Surrey border. maybe that is something that a video could be made on too?

I used to be a milkman in this area, some of the unmade roads sure made my float rock and roll.

      Thanks for the support.
I Iike to document stuff I've been told about in the past and dig into what I've been told to find out how much is definitely true and what may be a vivid imagination!

Please continue to make more - I’m watching all your stuff - you should also summit it to the bbc - they must have segments in local news etc that they might feature on anniversaries etc

Really interesting to learn about the history of the area. I have family in Lewes so know the area fairly well but not too much about the history. Looking forward to the next one.
