- Hello everyone! In today's video we're briefly exploring the Avon Yard, also called the Big Four Yard, located on the CSX St. Louis Subdivision in the town of Avon, west of Indianapolis. In the video, we're primarily focusing on a train being put together by many EMD switch engines, and the new train, CSX Q361, departing the yard.
The four mile long, 490-acre yard was built over the course of the fifties by the New York Central Railroad, and dedicated in 1960. It had 55 classification tracks, of which it still has them all, and over 160 freight cars an hour could be sorted there.
Today the yard serves CSX trains which travel around the Midwest, and there is never a time where action is not happening there.

I live real close to this yard. It operates 24/7. I always wondered how things happen up there. The noise from the yard helps me fall asleep at night. Good to see footage of what goes on there!
Enjoyable and very informative, many thanks
Good variety and great commentary.
Love Avon videos
Awesome video! Good narration!
Great information thanks
love your videos they are as good as Danny Harmon's videos (aka Distant Signal)
Thanks! Danny Harmon was my inspiration actually.
@@YellowNoseProductions wow what a coincidence
You should film at ADM grain in Indianapolis
Bailey yard in Nebraska is the largest yard
Pretty good. Persoanlly. I love the EMD 40s and 50/s but I’m not a fan of anything SD 60 or above. I just don’t like the look. GE looks like they work a lot better. But hey to each their own
Hello, thinking of traveling to Avon with my husband and kids. Can you tell me where a good spot to railfan in Avon?
To tell you the truth, avon is good, but The best spot is downtown Indianapolis on top of the Union station parking garage. Your kids are gonna love being high up there
Agreed. Avon yard doesn’t have many accessible spots with good views.
This was a former Conrail yard in the 1970s
Never too poor to tour
Do you mind if I ask witch streets you used to get into the yard
Gable Dr takes you right to it, but don't go past the guard rail. Everywhere else is not risk-free so it pays off to have a drone.
