Being a technology nerd I just had to share this 55 year old 'Automatic' toaster with people. If you like the Aesthetic of the fallout games this is right up your alley.
I HAVE THE SAME TOASTER IN MY KITCHEN!!! My parents got it as a wedding gift 30 years ago and it was my great grandmothers before that. 50 years old and it still gets my toast just how I like it, and the occasional waffle.
I have had four Sunbeam toasters (and sold three) Yeah, no solenoids in there, contactors and if I am recalling correctly a bi-metal strip and torsion spring, it's ALL mechanical other than the heating coils. GREAT machines expensive in their day but well worth it, easily a 70 year toaster or longer. Your mother in law's looks like it could be a little saggy, there is an adjustment for that under the crumb tray and will bring it back to the original toast raise height.
I had found a different video on this and was looking for more on the subject. When I stumbled across yours, I was like "Woah british rocket man made a video on this toaster? Amazing"
I'm just casually going through old videos. Summer 2012 must have been when I found out about Kerbal Space Program and this channel. Anyway, Technology Connections made a video about this toaster not long ago and I was surprised to recognise this thing on a thumbnail in the least expected place.
Its actually a leaf spring, when it gets hot it lowers then when the heat goes off it cools and comes back up. Its probably one of the most ingenious inventions I have ever seen.
Imagine trying to find very old video of an obscure game where Scott was a cargo VTOL pilot for some space colony, but instead you find the Sunbeam, "an antique toaster that's better than mine."
Love the toaster, and I have a kettle that uses that plug system! It's close to 15 years old now but still scale-free, I love it because the element isn't in the water so it suffers no corrosion.
You didn‘t even mention the imo neatest thing about it, which is that the lowering and raising of the toast carrier is driven entirely through the thermal expansion of the heating wire via a series of levers. That‘s why the middle heating wires are that odd shape rather than simple coils.
I have one of these, adjusted for inflation they are close to 300 dollars. Probably hard to compete with a 20 dollar toaster from Wal-Mart. I do like how it will toast frozen bread to the same darkness as fresh.
Anyone here that knows how to do modeling, please, make that toaster and a piano for KSP. Then we can see Jeb play the piano and make toast on the mun. (And yes, I am aware that there is no atmosphere on the mun to hear a piano. It will be the greatest unheard recital ever.)
So THIS was the mars rocket you said you had figured out in the last video... right? I could see you somehow getting there with some toasters, considering your past vids. hahaha
@@scottmanley I heard that the reason why they don't sell them anymore is because people wouldn't need to buy sunbeam toasters as often because the toaster would last so long
An elegant toaster for a more civilized age.
@General Cham considering we need to pray to Microcontroller God just to do something like this
This thing aged like fine wine
Yes, it is. Quite elegant.
By the way, would you happen to have any Grey Poupon?

I assume Technology Connections?

Same! I love how Scott appreciates cool old technology like this.

old technology was so robust :,)

I never thought you would make a video about this underrated toaster I just heard of
Never would I have thought I could want a toaster so much
I have the same toaster in my house. Still works awesome.
Have a T20B from home when I was a kid. Looks every bit as good as that one and works as well too.
Love the toaster, and I have a kettle that uses that plug system! It's close to 15 years old now but still scale-free, I love it because the element isn't in the water so it suffers no corrosion.
Man, looks like a miniature Airstream caravan!
Mine is a T20B Model still working as well as the day it was made!
I HAVE THE EXACT SAME UNIT AND IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM AFTER 55 YEARS
I have a T-20 A and love it! Thanks for the video!
I pressed a google link for this toaster. Laugh so hard when I heard “hello” 😂
Just made some toast this morning on at Sunbeam T-20A toaster. As a toaster it's perfection.

More proof the old days were better, and of course, "yeah toast!"

Yes, it actually scans the surface temperature of the slice. Modern toasters usually just have fixed timers.
Man, you are a renaissance man. Rocket science, appliances, hacker, a flippen DJ! You are a better man than I will ever be.
thought he was going to say "toast safe"
What's worse, the fact that I just watched a video about a toaster, or that I really want that damn toaster now.
The Technology Connections Discord just sent me here.
I have one of those! It's great!
Clearly the t20C because of the design in the front.
You seem very knowledgeable on toasters.
I have a T20a, two years older than I am. Cadmium plated innards and an asbestos insulation on the cord. Pretty close to Kerbal engineering.
Jeb uses a toaster that ejects the toast at escape velocity when it's done.
"As you see, when you put the toast in"
You put toast, in a toaster? :S
I never felt like really wanting a specific toaster, but now I do.. thanks rofl.
cya on #ksp
love your arm at 1:50 :D
I own and use the one my grandmother bought in 1954 or 55.
Please- where are you? do you do repairs for a fee?? Thank you for all that you share!!
LoLed for about 3 minutes with this comment, thanks for that.
But with the budget cuts those are no longer installed on the spacecraft
Those things will be to somebody what a Braun was to Johnny Ive.
you sure know your toasters LOL

Kerbal Toaster Program.
Love it i Bought 3
his mother is probably confused as to why he wants to film a toaster...
You haven't understood it correctly; If you give it more, the toaster will shoot the toast into orbit once it's ready
My aunt bought a $190 toaster for $19 because of a typo online, but this is still better :D
Now how do you get to mun or minmus with that toaster? ;D
I just watched a video about a toaster, I have way too much free time today.
Toast.
Yeh, what's the DeltaV on that?
You only have to be careful when flying your toaster.
A toaster that doesn't scare you!!!??!!!! !!
an automated toaster? shut up and take my money!! :D
They don't make 'em like they used to.
Why is the thumbnail image for the omnidirectional plug?
My Question Is What Happens When The Toast Gets Stuck?
cool, bra
Screw that! Launch exo-Kerbol missiles at not Kerbins! HAIL OVERLORD JEBEDIAH!
I just watched a video about a toaster...
put kerbal space program into the toaster and then we will have a fun video
@mexuza: he is older than you think.
99$ on ebay.ca, plus 40.50$ shipping and handling.
Pretty ritzey.
Wonder if it still works now haha
Still works.
@@scottmanley I heard that the reason why they don't sell them anymore is because people wouldn't need to buy sunbeam toasters as often because the toaster would last so long
can it fly
too bad Jebediah Kerman isn't here :(
lol xD
Put it upside down and fill it with rocket fuel?
lol
You should take up a new career in advertising.
I love those

Sorry, i’m not the one to ask, but TechConnections also did a video
@@scottmanley Thank you for your reply and the link!!
