Vintage Appliances: Toast-O-Lator Luxury Toaster
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 вер 2024
- Here's a look at a Toast-O-Lator "Luxury Toaster" or sometimes also billed at the "Aristocrat of Toasters." This design uses a track to carry the toast from one end to the other, and as the toast passes the electric coils, it toasts. The faster the track moves the lighter the toast, the slower it moves the darker the toast. A unique way to toasting bread, this special vintage toaster was a recent gift to the Cavalcade collection from friends Utz and Shirley - thank you so much!!

Me too! Thanks so much for being our food friend, hoomihoohoo!
🎉 400 🎉
That toastalator is like an amusement park ride for the kitchen!
LOL! You're right, Albert! And the only ticket it requires is a slice of bread!
Congratulations guys on your 400th episode. That's quite an achievement for any UA-cam channel. Thanks for sharing so many rare, and rarely seen appliances. Here's to next 400 episodes.
Thanks so much, cunard61!
I have only recently found this channel. Growing up in the 70-80s I always loved things from the 50s and before. I was always amazed that 30+ year old appliances and electronic items were still sound enough to be re-sold at antique stores for yet another owner. And they’re still being re-sold in working order. Thank you for re-creating the innocent age of a bygone era in a modern world that is hectic and often less colorful and interesting. I have enjoyed watching your back episodes. I have never heard of this toaster, and was very excited to see a video on it. I’m guessing it didn’t catch on because of having to wait to toast each slice individually, but that might just be my modern world influence of everything needing to be faster! What a wonderful collection you have! Congratulation on 400 episodes. I look forward to 400 more! Also I’m in awe of your cursive with a piece of chalk!
Agree? Kevin has beautiful handwriting. A far cry from my chicken scratches!
Hi John - thank you so much and I'm always glad to meet another fan of these wonderful vintage appliances who appreciate how well they were made. Thanks for watching!
LOL! Thanks, Allen - you can thank my third grade teacher for my handwriting!
I have watched all 400 episodes..I wouldn't miss! I am a big fan!
Hi Gary!! Thanks for being a food friend all these years!!
Four hundred videos and you boys still keep it all fresh and brilliant!!! Here's to the next 400 and beyond! 🎉😃🥂
Many thanks, Duane! I'm glad the videos still seem fresh, because I don't think we are! LOL!!
Congratulations on your 400th episode. I never saw a toaster like this. I had a Sunbeam toaster that would lower the bread down by itself, no lever to push. Good to see (hear) Ralph again. Take care guys. Here’s to many more episodes to come. 🥂
Many thanks, Bonnie! Those Sunbeam Radiant Control toasters were terrific - toasted beautifully!
I am so glad I came across your channel..years ago I also collected Vintage Kitchenware..like the Sunbeams. T-9,the double bubble Coffee Pots and the Kromex Canisters..never had the Toast a Lator..never could afford a Good one..just absolutely LOVE all your Appliances and such...I'm like a kid in a candy store just checking out all you have..
I’ve never seen a Toast-O-Lator! I love it! I bet it was made in the late ‘40’s or early ‘50’s.
Hi Monica - I think you're right about the time period for this toaster. Thanks!
I love it - toast T.V. I can just imagine myself as a child sitting and watching this toast with anticipation! Congratulations on 400!
Thanks, Teresa! Yes, I can see how this toaster was a big hit with the kids!
Happy 400th video! Really cool toaster. Toast on a conveyer belt! 😊
Thanks, Sharon!
Awesome episode, also Yay Ralph is back we missed you
Thank you, John!
A toast to toast!Congratulations on 400 episodes!
Thank you, Garrick!!
Very cool! I never knew this existed. Thank you for episode 400! 😊 I hope you two have 400 more times 10 at least for us.
Thank you, msb!!
I have my grandmother’s! Loved making/watching toast as a kid! Great memories! ❤
So glad you have your grandmother's Toast-O-Lator! Enjoy!
The toaster that thought it was a tunnel oven!
Congratulations on the big 400!
LOL! Thanks, AM!!
Congratulations on number 400! I love these old appliances that mix real utility with kitsch. This is on my list to own someday, as is a Sunbeam Radiant Control toaster (that self-lowering/raising one).
I have a Sunbeam Radiant Control toaster! Its not working at the moment, so I bought a different vintage toaster at a flea market. I used the Sunbeam for many years, I think it just needs some kind of adjustment, but I haven’t figured it out yet. Old toasters are SO much better than newer ones!
@@cynthiafisher9907 Toaster ovens too! I grew up with a GE Toast N Broil in the 80's that had a push lever toast function. Since then I've NEVER seen another toaster oven that had a lever for toasting. Everything is those annoying tick-tock timer movements now.
@@marcberm You can’t even get a good piece of toast!
Thanks, Marc! I often see the Sunbeam Radiant Control toasters around. They brown the toast very evenly - a really great design. When you find one, you'll love it!
I found this site when I went looking for a photo of this toaster, which I grew up with. It was a wedding gift to my parents in 1947. My brother and I used to watch the toast crawl along through the porthole; we'd move the toaster to the edge of the table so the toast would fall on the floor. That way, we could toast another piece and the show would continue. I have ours. I haven't used it in years, since its cord is frayed and I need to find someone to lovingly replace it. How lovely to see it in action again!
Hi Peter! So glad you found this video and nice to hear your story about growing up with a Toast-O-Lator! I think these toasters were always a hit with kids! Thanks!
Congratulations on 400 episodes! This Toast-O-Lator toaster brought the assembly line to the breakfast table, love this line from a write up about a 1939 version of the toaster. So unique, thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Cathy - what a great line! It is sort of like an assembly line!
Congratulations on your 400th episode of the vintage kitchen life. How different this toaster is! Yes, you're fortunate to have received that gift! It's at a good new home. Very interesting. Thank you both. It made me listen to another oldie - Heywood Banks "Toast " song. Can't wait to see what's next. TOAST!!!
Thank you, Nancy!
Congratulations on 400 episodes boys! Looking forward to seeing the next 400! 🎉
Appreciate it! Thanks, John!!
Here’s to the next 400 episodes! Love watching every one! I used to love watching your videos at your cabin! 🎉Congratulations🎉 to you all .. cheers.
Word Up !
Thank you, Ian!!
Congrats fellas and to Mary Anne and all the food friends you've shared with us! I found you 4 years ago and have gone back to watch most of your episodes. Just made your raisin orange cinnamon swirl bread which has become a family favorite and just one of the recipes and ideas I've gleaned. Also many thanks for adding history and knowledge for vintage serve ware that I've inherited and collected over the years. I now know more about my own very small collection thanks to you. On this end I'm always excited to see what comes next! How fitting that you'd mark your 400th episode with such a marvelous vintage appliance. Cheers and may you continue for many years to come!
Thank you so much, June! I appreciate you watching the episodes and I'm glad that you've found some recipes to enjoy! We will keep them coming!
Congratulations on your 400th episode 🎉 a "toast" to you all that make it happen😊. Speaking of toast, that's the weirdest toaster I've ever seen. What a hoot! A truly unique find. (That design obviously didn't catch on in a big way, but it's a ton of fun!)
Thank you, Julie! It really is a fun toaster!
400???!!! I only discovered you this year so I got me some videos to watch!😂 Congratulations 🎉 Keep em coming!
That toaster is really cool! What a great addition to your already awesome collection 😃
Thanks, Judy! Glad you discovered us!
Happy 400 episode!!!!! I very much enjoy your vlogs!!!! Congratulations!!!🥳🥳🥳🤠🤗😊😊😃
Thank you, Ma Pooh!
Congratulations on your 400th episode. Such a great and fun gift you received! I never knew there was a toaster like this.
Thanks, Donna! I had only seen pictures of these - it was a wonderful gift to receive!
Here’s a toast 🥂 to your 400th show! Cool toaster,it’s such fun!
Thanks a million, CC! Cheers!!
Hi Kevin and Ralph! I've never seen a Toas-O-Lator before, so this was a real treat. Thanks for sharing it with us. Of course, now I want toast...sigh...
Thanks, Nancy! Seeing a toaster in action always gives me a craving for toast, too! Any opportunity to have another piece of bread! LOL! Thanks!
Congratulations To Cavalcade Of Food and it's 400th Episode Kevin your the Best Many Blessings Love is the Key ! ❤🔥

Congratulations 🎉🍾 🎊 on your 400th episode!
A celebratory toast 🥂 to making toast ! 🤣
LOL!! Thanks, Kathleen!
HAPPY 400❤❤🎉🎉
Thanks, Cindy!
Congratulations on 400! So cool to watch you now that we’ve actually been there! 😊❤
Thanks so much, Todd! It was beyond wonderful to see you and your mom!!
Congratulations on 400 episodes! That dish you used to catch the toast is Blue Ridge Pottery in the Fruit Fantasy pattern. I have a whole set in that pattern. One of my favorites and very colorful. Rye toast is great to use for club sandwiches. I've never seen a Toast-O-Lator in action, so thanks for the demo. My mom got a "pop-down" toaster as a wedding present in 1951. It's very tall. They used it for a few years and then got a GE toaster that worked better.
Thanks, Jonathan! I've always loved rye bread. I've seen those pop down toasters, also called "gravity" toasters. Some restaurants use a commercial model that is made in that style. Thanks!
Great video,I bet I have seen most of the 400!your videos have inspired many wonderful meals in our home! Thanks cavalcade crew!!!
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed some of the recipes!
I had buttered rye toast this morning, from a vintage toaster oven, which isn't quite as stylish as your Toast o Lator, but it was still pretty yummy. Congratulations on your 400th episode. Each one is a delight. Keep 'em coming, Kevin, and thanks for all the fun.
Thank you so much, Cynthia!! I love that you have a vintage toaster oven and made some nice rye toast!!
A unique toaster and good addition to your collection. Congrats to you on 400! 😁
Thank you, dzeller!
What a wonderful gift for you Kevin. I must admit I had to hit pause and go and make myself toast in my 1950's General Mills toaster! I have my grandfather's 1940's Sunbeam toaster also. The little light on the Sunbeam has always lancinated my children and now, my grandchildren. Over the years, I have received newer model toasters, but I found other homes for them, as nothing toasts the bread to my liking like the old ones! They both still work GREAT and look like new! I love that toast- o - later though! Rye toast is my favorite! Congratulations Kevin & Ralph on your 400 wonderful episodes!
Hi Raven! Glad you made some toast in your General Mills toaster! Those are great toasters! The new ones can't compare to the older appliances. Thank you!!
🥂 🍾 to the next 400!!!! Please keep “em coming ~ you three are absolutely precious and make we viewers so happy when you put up a video .
I Agree
Thanks, Kathleen! We'll try to keep these videos coming!
The slickest toaster ever. Didn't know about this. Congrats
Isn't this a cool toaster?? Thanks, Kim!
Love the Toast-O-Lator! Thanks for sharing. Happy 400th episode!
Thank you, Cynthia!
Congrats on so many wonderful episodes! That toaster is super cool! I need one here at elm cottage.
Thanks, Corey!! One of these would look great in the cottage!
Nice find, or gift rather. Very cool. I did a quick search and it apparently went on the market around 1939, but may have been in production through at least the late 40's, if not into the 50's, most likely to the early 50's. I used to have my parents old Toastmaster toaster from 1954 when they got married, I think it was a wedding present and it had a solenoid to raise/lower the bread automatically so when you put the bread in on one side, it would automatically lower, when done, it's smoothly rise up, even when you pressed the temp control in to cancel. I later replaced it with a wide slot toaster for bagels etc from Farberware with a red plastic housing cover. It lasted for quite a while until the element went, by that point, it was unevenly faded from the sun.
It was probably a Sunbeam Radiant Control toaster.
Thanks, John. Those automatic toasters were popular in the 50's. Sunbeam made one for many years and they worked beautifully.
Congratulations on episode 400! I am friend of Cavalcade, to be sure.
Yes you are a friend! Thanks so much, Lawrence!
Happy 400th Guys! Neat toaster, but I think I can see why it didn't take off, considering it was one slice at a time! I'll have to go back and check out the other toaster vid. My grandmother had one of those that the sides opened to load the bread, which seemed cool to me as a kid! (that was late 60's, but I'm sure the toaster was old then). I remember wondering as a kid why everything at an old person's house was old too, but back then applainces were built to last a lifetime! Wish they still were! Amusing sidenote: my very frugal aunt had to get a new fridge last year! She's 95. She had been using the same fridge since she and my uncle set up house in 1951, so that fridge was 71!
Hi Allen - I have a couple of those toasters where the sides open - they only toast one side at a time. Appliances were built to last - your aunt sure got her money's worth on that refrigerator!! Thanks!
400 episodes! Congratulations and I look forward to many more!
Thanks so much!
Congratulations on 400 episodes and so many successful years here! I discovered you a few years ago and really enjoy seeing things that remind me of my childhood in the 60s and 70s, items that reflect the generations of family life, collections that inspire my love of vintage, and features that introduce me to cool vintage items like this toaster! I’ve never seen anything like this before and it was so fun to watch! I hope you are making these videos for many more years to come! Thank you!!
Thank you so much, Jennifer! The best part of collecting - and sharing it through the videos - is the people I have met. I appreciate you watching - and I'll keep them coming!
Thank you for sharing! You are living the dream! Stay hungry my friends😅
LOL! Thanks, Barbara! We're always hungry!
Congratulations on 400!
Thanks so much, Paul!
Happy 400th episode!!
Could you run more than one piece of bread at a time?
It's rather fascinating to watch... but I think it would take forever if you had to make breakfast for a large family like they had back then. It's kind of a novelty... but it is cool!!
I've been watching you guys for maybe 8 years now?
I was searching You Tube for videos on making homemade sausage when I discovered your kielbasa episode from the cottage... I still miss the cottage, but I've been an avid viewer since.
Have fun with your new toy!!
Here's to 400 more!!
Take care!
Thanks so much, Greg! I think you could put in toast back to back, but if you had a lot to make it would take some time. We always had a four-slotter growing up - lots of toast quickly! I appreciate you watching all those years!!
Congratulations on you 400th episode 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you, Frank!
Congratulations 400 shows!! Love your show. If I ever come across a crazy appliance, I will send it to your store!!!
Thank you, windingroad!!
Congratulations to everyone 👍👍 love your episodes…..🎉keep them coming, I agree, rye toast YUM-O love your entire marvelous vintage collections ❤
Thank you, Diana!
What a cool toaster. Thanks for sharing. Congratulations on your 400th. Here's to many more!
Thank you, Jane!
I appreciate these videos so much! That is a cool appliance! Happy 400! 🎊 🎉Thank you!!
Thank you, Anna!
WOW Congrats on 400!
Thank you, Amy!
Love you guys!!!❤
Thanks for the love, beezy!
Congrats on #400! I discovered your channel a year ago, and I thoroughly enjoy all your content!
How fun. Toast and a show! 😊
Thanks so much!
Really cool. I want one, but not paying the $215. Plus shipping eBay price. Cherish yours and thanks for sharing😊
I’m tempted!
Hi Fred - you may find one turn up in other places for a lower price. I find much of what's on Ebay to be inflated, but the trade off is it's right there and you don't have go hunting for years to find something.
Good show as always 😊
Thanks, Charles - appreciate you watching!
Hey I truly love your vintage items. Can’t wait to fixed your cornbread dressing 😊
Thanks, Kimberly! I know that dressing has become a tradition for you! Enjoy!!
A "toast" to your 400th episode!
Thanks so much, Marty!!
Thank you so much for All the Great videos!! They're so FUN & informative! 💛
You're welcome, mshowell! Appreciate you watching!
I love this one
Thank you!
Happy 400th episode, cheers to the next 400. Love the collection of all your vintage appliances. I am looking for a good okm range myself to restore or find a very good original.
Thanks so much! Hope you find a O&M range - I know they are out there!
The Henry Ford museum in theircollection has a 1939 toast-o-lator. For those not familiar with The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village are in Dearborn Michigan.
Thanks, trainships. The Henry Ford Museum has an amazing collection of toasters and other old appliances - and lot of other things. It's an amazing place!
Wow, 400th episode! Congrats! Hi Kevin and Ralph!
Thanks so much, Baydrive!
Wow, 400! Awesome. Toaster is amazing. I could imagine people putting their hands in the two side slots, to move the toaster and forgot it was still hot. Possible reason for the design not catching on.
Thanks, PLK!
happy 400 love your videos
I so Agree Happy 400th
Thank you, Foxeema!
Congratulations!🥂 been watching since 2017.
Thanks for spending these years with us, Andrew!
I was late to the Calvacade but I love it. Thanks
Hi Fred - thanks for being such a great food friend!!
Ralph got a zinger in...yeah! I agree not a day over 100, me on the other hand...oy veh! I think if your toast is burning it would be hard to jettison it fast but maybe lator. it's definitely an interesting novelty.
Thanks! I'm thinking you could tilt the toaster and slide out the bread if you smelled it burning?
Happy 400th episode
Thanks, Lauren!
That is cool toaster just like the SunBeam Radiant Toaster that automatically goes down
Hi RF - yes, that Sunbeam Radiant Control is another very neat toaster. Thanks!
While interesting, it seems slow because it only does one slice at a time. I had the Sunbeam one which belonged to my husband's Aunt. Bought in 52. We inherited it around 84 and used it well into the 2000s. Had 2 children. Was not fixable.
Many large families in the 50s and 60s had 4 slice toasters. I have a vague memory of someone having a 6 slice toaster. Would not say for sure.
👏 congrats!🎉 love your fountain of vintage kitchen info.
We look forward to many more.. Tring to think of a different topic. But you cover all of them.
But I do notice that your not interested in gas stoves.
I am, but to each their own!😊
Thanks so much, Don! I only collect electric stoves - I have no gas lines in my kitchens!
It would kinda be a nightmare for Kevin to rotate gas stoves around for display, with all that's involved in hooking them up, but I love gas stoves too. I had a propane tank where I lived before here, and I ran a little gas stove on it, but when we bought this place, it came with a nice electric range. I still fantasize about switching, but so many other projects are higher on the list!
Congrats on your 400th!!! And all best for many more to come :) What a great gift! I was wondering what the "0-Later" means? Appears to run similar to an escalator?😊
Hi Victoria - I'm not sure. The word "lator" is a Latin word but it refers to someone who proposes laws (like in legislator). Thanks!
Cool 😀
Thanks, Michael!
😊❤
When your bread gets stale, just run it through the toaster.
A great way to use stale bread! Thanks, Mike!
Wow 400 episodes, who knew? Being a toaster fan, that is too cool for school! However, I did see one once that had kind of a similar concept with the conveyor. It toasted only on one side, and when it came to the end of the conveyor the toast flipped, and went down the conveyor and toasted the other side. That one I think they said was from the early 30s. I'm curious what year yours is from? I would guess early post WWII, but who knows?
Hi Scooter! The one you saw sounds like it might be an earlier version of this one. I'm pretty sure this is from after the war, around the late 40's. Thanks!
Happy 400th! What an exciting gift to mark the occasion! I will write once again that I know it's going to be a good part of my day when my YT bell indicates that Cavalcade of Food had uploaded another episode. to the COF team.
Thank you very much, CC! Stand by for more episodes!!
😊
That's a $250 toaster on ebay plus there is also an ad too Kevin!
Thanks, Stacey! I'll take a look at the ad - it would be fun to see how they marketed this toaster!
From the days when people had enough common sense to unplug it, before getting to the "guts" -now they would have a million safety cutouts and a microchip or two in there 😞
Actually, there isn't even a way to get inside most modern toasters. They are not meant to be repaired or taken apart - just thrown away.
It's so slow, but what a hoot, lol. Very cool gift. Happy 400th. ☺
Thanks so much!
