It all comes down to Santayana's famous saying, "Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it." It is the knowledge of history the engenders gratitude.
Some things can't be remembered after they are out of living memory. Even adults can forget what things were like in their own childhoods. You need to build systems that take this into account.
It is incredible and totally surreal. Those lucky enough to live in the West are in general enjoying a comfortable standard of living that has never been experienced before by so many. We stand on the shoulders of previous generations and we owe everything in our luxurious lives to the use of fossil fuels (cheap abundant fuel, energy, healthcare, longevity and food). How is it possible that the predominant culture in the West has ended up so ungrateful for what our forefathers strived for and why do so many despise the very source of our comfortable technology driven lives? I can only think that most people are so distanced from actual reality and so intellectually lazy that they have become open to being totally manipulated.
