Some great food for thought there. One point worth considering though when attempting a zero $ power bill during your retirement is the "supply" component of your bill. As more and more households follow your lead to zero grid usage, as I see it, energy suppliers have no option but to keep raising the supply component as they are already being forced to do. The money has to come from somewhere to keep the books in the black. Disconnecting from the grid won't be an option for the average urban dweller either.
Thanks Doug. That's a fair point and it's why selling public grid infrastructure to private companies is a bad idea. Unfortunately that horse has bolted in many parts of Australia.
To your LCOE you need to add either the cost of your solar panels or the cost of your Off-Peak energy if you charge the battery from the grid. You also need to add the cost of installation of the battery and panels. Our roof is not suitable for panels, but I have considered charging a battery from the grid during EV Off-Peak ($0.08 / kWh) and then using the battery during the Peak ($0.44 / kWh) hours 4pm to 8pm. Probably not worthwhile, particularly considering that the $0.08 Off-Peak could be withdrawn at any time.
Good pick-up! Glad to see someone is paying attention. The LCOE for rooftop solar was calculated at 6cents/kWh in my earlier video, so you should add that to the 33 cents/kWh for the battery storage. At 39 cents/kWh it is still cheaper than the grid but the payback will be well over 16 years. Thanks for watching!
