I’m so annoyed they had to put some sort of reason behind lights behavior by being an outcast and losing his mom to give him this victim complex. Like the world is against him. But in the anime there’s none of that. He’s the perfect student, has a normal healthy family, has a promising career path, can get all the girls. Yet despite all that, deep down he has this narcissism that drives his decision to kill “bad guys”

Robin Sequira, Alura Storm-Screamer Yeah definitely because I definitely started getting into anime and stuff around 7th grade (age 11 for me) and death note was one of the first I’d seen at all but none of it was shocking or jarring for me. There’s also not a lot of gore or unnecessary cursing which is probably why the rating is so different from the movie.
LITERALLY THE WHOLE POINT of death note is for Light to be “perfect”, perfect grades, perfect demeanor, perfect vibes just so you would never, ever think or assume that he’s Kira because that’s how deep his god complex runs and that movie SHAT on the entire premise of the story.
HONESTLY. If people started getting murder everybody is gonna suspect the weird kid who drinks his milk with his toes, not the star athlete. I've gotten away with sooo much stuff, including very blatantly stealing shit, because I have a reputation as "the good kid".
@@destinynanaakrong8584 You’re completely wrong?! Ryuk explicitly says he is on nobody’s side and doesn’t care what happens to anyone. He just wants to watch what happens. He only came to the human realm because he was bored and wanted to see what a human would do with a Death Note. But he didn’t encourage Light to do anything.

ITS LIKE THEY DONT DO THEIR RESEARCH. For fucks sake, if people are gonna say something means something in another language, MAKE SURE ITS THE RIGHT WORD/LANGUAGE.
What enrages me the most is that there was no need to make all of the changes they did to the plot. The plot was amazing before, so they could have just been lazy and used the original story. But nOPE- Edit: spelling
And literally using kira was dumb asf cause Kira is just one of those words in Japan that deadass... I don’t know the correct word.. just it’s basically the Japanese Verizon of an American word since Americans moved there like years ago... BAD EXPLANATION!! I know but you can do research if u want! But hey that’s why the Netflix adaptation is dumb!!
Actually, I don't think they were trying to translate "Light" by calling him "Kira", though they did make a mistake still. Kira is a Russian name, and their error is calling him the female form, because it should actually be "Kir". In Russian, Кир = Kir and it means "Leader of the people" and given his goals in the story, it's a great name choice. They just made a mistake giving him the female form of the name. If that was their thinking, I personally like it, it fits. I just don't think they tried to do a direct translation of "light" and screwed up that epically. That doesn't make sense to me. Perhaps they even knew Kira was female but thought it would be easier for their Japanese audience to pronounce and get behind and made the choice to go with Kira over Kir despite the misgendering. This is all my interpretation though.
@@jademoon7938 Kir is not a Russian name though :D There is a famous Soviet writer Kir Bulychev, but that's a nickname, actually based on a female name Kira :D Also, I think Kir is a Russian version for Cyrus, but it's still not a Russian name, just a weird phonetic reading of a Greek name. But I actually see your point, what you say makes more sense than just horrible job at translating, femeninity of the name aside. I was just basing off what the video says and didn't do a research, so good job you 😁
The thing about Yagami Light is that he's a completely normal dude, he has a great life ー he's smart, good-looking, everyone likes him, he has a loving family, they're wealthy, etc... And he still becomes this messed up serial killer. There's no tragic backstory or anything like that. And this movie completely ruins it by killing off his mom.
@@nont18411 But then that's "boring" and "evil for the sake of evil"...I'll admit, a good sympathetic background could work in how you know they are bad but you still don't feel bad for them. As a person of Russian descent I can vouche with 100% certainty: there is no word for light in russian that's even vaguely pronounced "kira". Not even a little bit.
i mean, if you go to wiktionary, it is a name... which... comes from another name meaning господин/госпожа... and that name came from another name meaning как солнце i don't even have anything else to say about this. the instant i heard that, i saw red and was about to throw something at a wall
Maybe your grandparents or great*X grandparents knew a Russian word like that. *Nah, JK.* The screenwriters for this film obviously aren't that smart or deep.
@@thisasiankidistrashfordram374 Well, I speak Russian fluently. I doubt the screenwriters do. Plus, I am Greek Russian. Don't get me started on the things screenwriters neglect to research .
"So here's an idea, we change him from being a seemingly perfect popular Japanese guy to an outcast white guy who's unhinged. That way Americans can relate." "Yes, I'm sure most Americans can relate to a school shooter."
When I was like 12, my Spanish class was playing Kahoot, so like the absolute weeb trash I am, I made my screen name "Kira" and didn't tell anyone. I got first place and got to listen to an entire 8th grade Spanish class (who knew absolutely nothing about anime) demanding to know who Kira was, and I was l i v i n g. And yeah that might be my deepest darkest secret.
I'm very upset by them changing Light from attractive, privileged, popular, charismatic young adult with a stable family life, who got into the best university in the country to "high school outcast #999". He was basically guaranteed success in life, but after gaining Death Note it wasn't enough or him, he wanted power and to become God. Original Light just seemed so prim and proper from the outside, people weren't immediately suspicious of him. Light Turner is nothing if not shady as hell.
Honestly some producers/people in Hollywood probably relate to the other version of light so they need it to drastically change in order to “relate” to teens.... although teenagers, and every other human, needs to see various kinds of archetypes of people and minds in order for all of us to get a small consensus on the different types of humans in our world..... there are def people like Light who exist and some of those people are in the entertainment industry lmao
Also how are you going to try to stay “ambiguous” but put severe pity on your character by making everyone that isn’t him a douche??? Like of course the audience will root for the main character but ironically, you wanted things to remain ambiguous in its themes and within the Characters thoughts themselves??? Makes no sense lmao
I remmebered something: the first meeting between Yagami Light and Ryuuk. Yagami just flinched and he said "I was waiting for you, I knew this book would come with "consequences". So what you want?" Light Turner got scared like a little bitch! God damn, Yagami, they did you so dirty!
To be fair, it makes sense why Light Turner freaked out so much (besides the fact that he's a weakling coward): they whitewashed it. Since Shinigami are a part of Japanese mythology that people in Japan would know about it, it makes sense why Light Yagami wouldn't be that scared, and combined with his personality it helps reinforce his cold, calculated, always-keeps-his-cool personality. Here, falling over and letting out a ridiculous screech makes sense for Light because despite the fact that they want to make it like he has the same personality as Yagami, he *is* a wimp.
I think screaming and falling out of your chair is a little more than "flinching" but I see what you're saying even though you're technically lying about what happened. However it makes sense that he did get scared at first because it humanizes his character more. He wasn't some egotistical mindless killer.
The ONLY entertaining scene in the live action was when Ryuk first appeared and we witness Light shit his pants while having a wholeass breakdown. It wasn’t accurate but I have not laughed that hard in a while
Light's a bitch in the original anime. Can't believe people just describe him the way he wants to be seen by others. He screams when he sees Ryuk and falls on his ass, and then he's like "Nah, fam, I wasn't scared, I was expecting you actually" it's pathetic.
futurestoryteller I, surprisingly, don’t find that too out of place tbh. You randomly get a notebook that can kill anyone, it’s not far off to think that it belongs to some higher power. Then, you find some random creature in your room without any warning. Regardless of if he saw it coming or not, it’s not impossible to think he’d get scared because some creature (a death god) showed up without any notice. That would scare the shit out of practically anybody.
futurestoryteller I think the only reason why the anime scene and the live action one are different is because in the anime (because Light expected some “god” showing up) he calmed down quicker.
futurestoryteller My argument still stands dude but whatever floats your boat ig (but I think what you’re confusing is him being startled at Ryuk’s sudden appearance and being scared of Ryuk, which I’d say he wasn’t for the latter).
I remember watching a review for this movie when it first came out and someone in the comments said “Why does Light care about Misa now? He didn’t give a damn about these hoes” 😂
The fact that they felt a person having the power to kill anyone anywhere on the planet, using only a name & face, with no way to defend yourself from it *wasn’t scary by itself* is the most American thing about this adaptation. Not because Americans wouldn’t find that frightening but because the people who made this assumed they wouldn’t. Because of course they would assume that. Hollywood has spent over 50 years blowing away bad guys so of course they can’t see it as scary. No, you need gore to be scary. And the clown faced death g-d needs to be scary.
The most scary and intense situations in average American movies according to the producers - shooting, shooting, shooting, huge group of political people and a president of US sitting in a basement in front of a huge screen and thinking, shooting, shooting, "Hey, your girlfriend/kid might die if you don't bring me this" , shooting, shooting....
imo light in the anime and manga was fucking terrifying - he's so manipulative, cold, intelligent and charming. but that also makes him fun to watch because you're always wondering what he's gonna do next. light turner is just an edgy bastard who thinks he's tough
Also the fact that they wrote light to be a big outcast who gets treated like dog shit compared to actual narcissists who are like his character lmaoooo like if you make pity on your character by making everyone that isn’t him a douche, then of course the audience will root for the main character but ironically, you want things to remain ambiguous in its themes and within the Characters thoughts themselves??? Makes no sense lmao
@@bubblegum-uo5pf I read the manga and he was easily the scariest thing in it. The fact that the freaking Shingami was comedic relief really says a lot about Light as a character and what he did.

I was confused by it too as Russian is my first language. There is no "kira" word that means light, but there is quite rare female name Kira, which as I researched had meaning of "sun" or "ray of light" in Persian, from where it came from. So confusing... 😅
Should've let Neil Breen do his own version of Death Note where he plays both L and Light, and they're long lost twin brothers, because why the hell not. At least he's really good at portraying narcissistic geniuses.

My issue wasn't that they didn't follow the anime. On the contrary, I always encourage that if you're gonna do a remake, make it different AND unqiue. My problem is that this movie tried to both follow the source material AND be original, which resulted in creating a horrid first draft of the original that could never stand on its own. It was an unholy marriage of conflicting ideas.
YES THIS EXACTLY! (I’m copying my reply to another comment here about how they reversed Light to act more like Misa/Mia and vice versa). That could’ve been an interesting concept if they changed Light’s name too. If this wasn’t marketed as a poor rehash and the characters weren’t “Light 2.0”and “Misa without the S” they could sell it as an entirely new story. We really only know the story of the Death Note told through its interactions with one character who’s the lead of every retelling, Light in Japan in 2003/2006 (manga/anime). What if someone else, a girl in America, got it in 2017? That could’ve been a cool take on it. But every adaptation insists on keeping the strangest parts “accurate” while changing all the most important parts and not for the better.
Yeah, I actually like the way his eyes look and how he's always in shadow like that- I just like it on its own, not as Ryuk. But as a separate concept it does look neat.

Girl I am SO HAPPY someone out there understands my rage about this adaptation. I love Death Note, it was one of my first animes. The morality, ideals of justice, clashing of intelligence and views of how the world should be, just UUUUGH it is everything. After watching this shitshow of a remake, I had to look up wtf the team was thinking. I found an interview online. Here's what the director of Netflix's awful Death Note remake thinks the story is about: A tragic teenage romance story. A TRAGIC TEENAGE ROMANCE STORY. A TRAGIC. TEENAGE. ROMANCE. STORY. Fucking why.
When I was in cosmetology school I went outside on break to find one of my friends on the back steps watching this on her phone. She didn't even look up when she IMMEDIATELY answered, "Don't. It's fucking garbage." I asked her why she was still watching it and she straight up death stared at her phone like she hadn't slept in a week out of sheer rage and spite and said in that "quiet rage" way, "I started it. _I have to finish it._" And I will never forget that

The fact that they killed Light's mom and his little sister is just completely absent were two of the many things that annoyed me the most, but especially because the fact that Light had a normal perfect life as a top-student with a perfect traditional Japanese family made it more significant for him to be so narcissistic, to the point of him even thinking (briefly) about killing his own little sister just to get her out of the way. When you give a character this dARk pAsT and dIfFiCuLT sChoOL LiFe and dEaD PaREnTs you're not only just performing an overused trope that everyone is tired of, but also getting rid of a key aspect of the original character. Ikr? Vampire Diaries, Death Note, Percy Jackson, Assassin's Creed. No matter what, adaptations are always the worst. GOT was decent at first, but stopped being decent when they started deviating from the books. The only adaptation I liked was Lord Of the Rings, I thought they really did a good job at keeping only the essential elements ('cause the story was too complex and long) while keeping it true to its nature.
What? Kira doesn't mean light in russian, *why* would someone do that, there are people who speak this language. Imagine being russian and someone says to your face: "kira means light in russian" And you are like: что?
I feel like the only reason they changed as much as they did is because they’re trying to shove tons of episodes and build up into an hour and a half. Like, Death Note the anime took its time because that’s the way it should be. This movie really probably shouldn’t have been made.
yea. i believe there's several japanese live action movies to build up the story and tension and stuff. i havent seen them but theyre probably better than the netflix one. the musical cuts the stuff with near and mello out entirely but its still WAY better than this lol (also its probably my favourite death note adaptation and favourite musical).
@@bubblegum-uo5pf i've seen the japanese movies (excluding light up the new world) and they are all WAY better than this. each of them is over 2 hours long and they manage to add a lot from the manga and anime into them. the story is different from the get go (light's already in college when it starts, and his girlfriend is a different character) and the characters are slightly different, but it works. light is even more of an asshole, ryuk is more empathic, misa has way more layers to her and l is more clearly love deprived and you can see that he's just a kid as well (helps that the actor was only 20 and younger than the actor who played light). even sayu is more prominent. only weird thing to me is they made rem a guy.
Dude this movie had moments where I was like, damn, there’s potential here. L’s actor was SUBLIME. L’s script was awful but his actor did amazing, I could have accepted him as L if he’d had better writing. Mia was also like, okay. She was more of a Light than Light. If only she wasn’t meant to be Misa, which leads me into my main thought. If this were meant to be one of those “different story in the same universe” thing? It would still need lots of work, but I think it would remove a lot of the problems I have with the film. Just make it a kid who got a different Death Note in america. Also, sometimes the cinematography was actually pretty awesome. It’s just the writing man. The writing is horrendous. Thanks for covering this one!
I think I would've preferred if they had genderswaped Light and that Mia was in fact Light... If you're gonna take artistic liberties just really go for it and do it well...
hyasinsu Honestly I think Mia should have just been her own character. She was clearly the better fit to inherit the Death Note, but I think if she were made into a new incarnation of Light she still wouldn’t compare to the original. She’d be better as her own thing entirely. So yeah, they really should have embraced the different with this one and made it its own separate story in the same universe, imo. Def agree they should have taken more liberties
Whoa you're right. A different deathnote story in America would have been much better. I can accept a different story if that's what it's meant to be. This "adaptation" is insulting in so many ways.
So my boyfriend (Russian) loooves death note. And he's sitting next to me while I watch your video. "No. God they must really have fucked that movie up. Glad I never saw that" 😂😂
It really bothers me that whoever created the movie seemed to miss the whole point that Light is kind of a sociopath... just giving him a genuine love interest goes against the whole idea of who Light is. He doesn't care about falling in love and starting some Bonnie and Clyde relationship, he USES women who are interested in him for his own advantage. The creators of this movie just didn't seem to understand that Light was more complicated than just being some form of anti-hero.

I’m sorry you faced people like that :( I love watching anime in sub and it would be my first choice when it comes to watching anime but I know better to not attack people for watching an anime in dub and I know others who are like this as well :)
Honestly? I really like dubs. I like the voice actors, they put a lot of time and effort into them bc they have to match the mouth flaps and animation perfectly, and yeah, sometimes it's nice to have an anime that I've seen a few times just playing in the background while I go do something else and still be able to understand what's going on. (Also dub bloopers are some of the best things in the world.)

Deathnote Russian: "light" is "KIRA"
Russian: am i a joke to u

He wasn't some egotistical mindless killer.
bro what yagami screamed and fell out of his chair anyone would seeing a death god in their room
@@exmachina8475 The point I made was that (in the English translation, at least) he says he _wasn't_ scared, which is obviously BS
futurestoryteller My argument still stands dude but whatever floats your boat ig (but I think what you’re confusing is him being startled at Ryuk’s sudden appearance and being scared of Ryuk, which I’d say he wasn’t for the latter).
I remember watching a review for this movie when it first came out and someone in the comments said “Why does Light care about Misa now? He didn’t give a damn about these hoes” 😂

"Sex and things that dont make sense" yep pretty much every movie adaption ever
Which just makes it seem so forced and end up less and less scary
Also the fact that they wrote light to be a big outcast who gets treated like dog shit compared to actual narcissists who are like his character lmaoooo like if you make pity on your character by making everyone that isn’t him a douche, then of course the audience will root for the main character but ironically, you want things to remain ambiguous in its themes and within the Characters thoughts themselves??? My issue wasn't that they didn't follow the anime. On the contrary, I always encourage that if you're gonna do a remake, make it different AND unqiue.

I live in Seattle and I’ve probably seen an umbrella once or twice in my lifetime lol. The North Face, Pantagonia, Colombia windbreaker jackets are what you see, EVERYWHERE lol
@@sandraespino549 Huh, I wonder if certain parts of Seattle are more umbrella heavy than others? I see a few other people using umbrellas around every time I do. It's definitely a minority, but I still always see a few whenever I go out in the wet. Maybe certain places are more windy than others or something.
I’m a Japanese 21yo who watched all the Anime series, the sensational Japanese live adaptation movie, the 10 episode drama series, and the Manga..❣️(I think my generation watched everything surrounding death note in Japan lol)
The most upsetting point for me might be Ryuku(リューク). There is a reason why he had to be the comical relief...🙄 the reason why Ryuku dropped his Death note in the first place was BECAUSE HE WAS BOARD, that’s the motivation of this Shimogami and shows the core message “humans are evil”!!!!!😒
And what’s up with Misa’s character.....🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
I mean, huh....(frustrated sigh). I don’t know how and why the production company fucked up the sensational first encounter between L and Kira🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
狂牛 I KNOWWWW
I had no idea there was a drama series or a Japanese movie. I will definitely be looking into this. Thanks.
@@davelewis8270 the movies in particular are very good, kenichi matsuyama is L, for real, he is great. and the rest of the cast is really good too. the movies are from the warner bros so you have them in original version and dubbed.
Light Yagami is narcissistic, merciless, strategic, manipulating. Light Turner is just a dumb kid who let the power of banging the cheerleader go over his head.
Your frustration reminds me of when the Percy Jackson series was made into a movie
I nearly ripped my TV screen off in frustration of how terrible the first movie adaptation was. It deviated so much from the original storyline.
What? Kira doesn't mean light in russian, *why* would someone do that, there are people who speak this language.
Imagine being russian and someone says to your face: "kira means light in russian"
And you are like: что?
My ass was just like: ЧТО ТАКОЕ
more like ЧИВО БЛЯТЬ?
And the name Kira being Celtic for light as well lmao the name literally means black
@@bubblegum-uo5pf i've seen the japanese movies (excluding light up the new world) and they are all WAY better than this. each of them is over 2 hours long and they manage to add a lot from the manga and anime into them. the story is different from the get go (light's already in college when it starts, and his girlfriend is a different character) and the characters are slightly different, but it works. light is even more of an asshole, ryuk is more empathic, misa has way more layers to her and l is more clearly love deprived and you can see that he's just a kid as well (helps that the actor was only 20 and younger than the actor who played light). even sayu is more prominent. only weird thing to me is they made rem a guy.
this would be implying that the writers actually watched the original anime
@@blammmed that is entirely fair. 😂
“The one who runs like Naruto.” Oooooo I used to want to TRIP THEM
I was in high school long ago enough to have never seen that particular action, but there were fans.
YES! I thought the same thing, it could have been such a better movie.
I can relate to your rage because this is exactly like what happened in the Percy Jackson adaptations.
The DISRESPECT of having Lakeith Standford be forced into this movie I cannnnt 😭😭
So my boyfriend (Russian) loooves death note. And he's sitting next to me while I watch your video.
And when you said "it's Russian for light" he looks at me like this: 🤨
I go back to the moment in the video. He goes close to the mic like this: 🤨👂
Listens, looks at me and goes like this: 🤨.... "No. God they must really have fucked that movie up. Glad I never saw that"
😂😂
It really bothers me that whoever created the movie seemed to miss the whole point that Light is kind of a sociopath... just giving him a genuine love interest goes against the whole idea of who Light is. He doesn't care about falling in love and starting some Bonnie and Clyde relationship, he USES women who are interested in him for his own advantage. The creators of this movie just didn't seem to understand that Light was more complicated than just being some form of anti-hero.
Lol Kennie you sounded so dead when explaining the movie plot but your eyes would light up when you would talk about the *ACTUAL* Death Note.
I just realized I said "light up", no pun intended haha

Also, yay DUBS! Half my family is dyslexic so I really only watch dubbed anime so we can watch together. Lots of purists who get mad about that XD
Dubs are fine. Weebs are just assholes
I Just Really Can’t Keep Up With Subtitles And I Don’t Want To Have To Pause Every Single Frame. The Purists Are Honestly So Ridiculous.
i like to watch sub generally, but i do enjoy watching subs too - especially if im doing something at the same time
I’m sorry you faced people like that :( I love watching anime in sub and it would be my first choice when it comes to watching anime but I know better to not attack people for watching an anime in dub and I know others who are like this as well :)
Honestly? I really like dubs. I like the voice actors, they put a lot of time and effort into them bc they have to match the mouth flaps and animation perfectly, and yeah, sometimes it's nice to have an anime that I've seen a few times just playing in the background while I go do something else and still be able to understand what's going on. (Also dub bloopers are some of the best things in the world.)
i think the actor for L did the best he could with the material he was given
“Ya’ll couldn’t leave it alone!!, Ya’ll can’t leave nothing alone!”
I feel that to the extent that if I could, I would turn Netflix's adaptions of Death Note and Saint Seiya into the potato chip that Light so epically eats just for them to be gone from the face of the Earth
mia is literally the most annoying character i’ve ever seen and i’m glad she died
i’m not sorry
Misa is better

I honestly don’t understand what producers/writers/directors are even thinking most of the time. You try to sell something by advertising it as something we already love, but shit all over it. And people wonder why audiences are over it.
