One of my most popular speed paint schemes is the beautiful black armour of the Black Templars, and I'm often asked how to translate this scheme from infantry to tanks! Well here you go! Painting large panels with contrast paints can seem difficult at first but once you get the hang of how much paint to use, it's super simple! Hope you enjoy the video and let me know if you have any questions!

That tank is beautiful. I'm not a fan of the weathering but, it ain't my tank. I've been hesitant to use contrast on anything bigger than a Dread so thanks for showing how well it works on tanks! Final thought, I used your video on stippling to paint a couple of tanks for my Astra Militarum army and it turn out amazing! Thanks for you videos and look forward to more!

Having spent 8 years in field force in our northern part of the country (OZ) the dust I found settles on the rear of the vehicles heavier than else ware, even though it still covers the whole vehicle the back/trailers cop the heaviest dusting. I hope that it will give you some ideas. I do love just how you painted & I have a 30K army to do (DA) that will be a challenge. Blessings to you keep up the good work.

This was helpful as I had wanted to know if the Contrast paints could be used on a vehicle. The model looks great and I learned a lot from this tutorial. Thanks for sharing this.

Two things you may add in the future: 1. The transfers maybe should've been weathered a little bit, maybe with sponge chipping to simulate peeling off or being scratched up by enemy fire and debree.
    2. The maybe should get a varnish. Either Matt or Satin. at least on camera it came out quite glossy and if it is a gaming piece you will definitely get Cheeto fingers if you move it around.

So out of curiosity, what did the contrast paint do that you couldnt have done by airbrush spraying it black and then using the washes and dry brush highlights? Or basically whats the advatage to using contast on a tank?
Genuine question, im debating how to paint my landraiders rn. TIA

    Hi Andy! Great video!
I saw through other videos that the applying contrasts with an airbrush is acrually pretty consistent on large surface models.
I know you don’t do much airbrush on the channel but it could be an intersting topic for a video.
Anyways, this metallic base for contrasts is a great formula, I’m going to paint my eldar like this!
Doomfire Magenta or Magos purple over a slightly brighter silver then this one.
    I hope it works well..
    Cheers! 🤙🏻

It should look great. And yes I try avoid airbrushing as not everyone had access to one.

Black templar contrast over leadbelcher spray and then drybrushed with a leadbelcher is how I just did the black on the silent kings throne. Looks like a black metal and is super fast.

Nice outcome! Although you can paint tanks with Contrast I'd still rather use spray cans or an air-brush with appropriate masking. Contrast through the airbrush is amazing too.

Final result looks really good, though maybe the weathering and wear is a bit too uniform. But the effect in and of itself works well, more about the placement maybe.

Awesome video and so simple to do, just in time for me to use on my templars impulsors, gladiators and land raider! If I wanted to add a blue tone to the highlight when would you say is a good time to add it in as an edge highlight?

Ive used your infantry video for my black templars and they look insanely good. That said im really nervous about contrast on vehicles as when i tried it in the past it was very splodgy and even worse after a wash. Urghhhh dont know what to do...

A little heavy on the weathering powder. Try using two different colours, weather more closer to the ground, less higher up and look at some reference photos of weathered vehicles. Or as it just my opinion and every one has one just do your thing. Cheers.

Well not wanting to burst your bubble of confidence but after the initial black paint I would rather have seen lead belcher only used sparingly as to me it seems a waste of paint covering it again using Black Templar Contrast and then Nuln Oil. But then I am a Scotsman so known to be tight when it comes to buying assorted colours and prefer Vallejo to GW paints which I find go further, coverage wise. Just my opinion and it is your model.

The weathering was a bit off. Way too heavy and inconsistent on some areas and non existent on others. Try to brush it INTO inner corners rather than laying it on top, and drag it across the edges of horizontal panels like a drybrush. Then brush it off of vertical surfaces and wide swaths of horizontal planes. With weathering, you either have to do it everywhere or not at all, or it just looks patchy and ultimately rather fake. So anywhere you left a 'shadow' (where the black wash settles) gets hit with weathering like around the templar symbols smack in the middle of that cream plate and on all the metal gun bits that you left totally untouched. You have to hit that with powder and then brush off the excess.
