Borrows screw driver from dad... still has it 30 years later. I dont think thats how borrowing works Kev 😂
😆
Ha!
It is between fathers and sons
That's exactly how borrowing works. :D
@@MegaSockenschuss came to say the same! xD
When these things came out, we could only dream of a servo that strong and fast. This brought back all sorts of memories. My first "real" rc was an original RC10T.
Love the vintage racing 👍🏻 Nice driving Kev 👍🏻
Nice to see some older rcs! Great video Kev!!
Really impressed. I thought the Manta would get monstered but it didn't. Good job Kev. More vintage stuff!
Kev, this might be one of youre best vids. Love these vintage cars and what they can do with a proper driver 👌
Well done on keeping tabs on your original RC cars. My first was from the very bottom of the Tamiya range (I, too, had to save for ages via a paper round) - some desert vehicle thing whose name I can't even remember. All I remember was how slow and basically useless it was. Fortunately, I had friends who were also into RC and managed to make better selections. I remember a grasshopper and a monster truck. I eventually graduated to a Hotshot, which wasn't just loads better than my previous car, but also had far more articles about it in the magazines, with suggested improvements and aftermarket parts. That was my first real introduction to mechanical things. I remember removing the front drivetrain to save weight and make it faster when racing on grippier surfaces, then putting everything back together to race around at the park, upgrading motors, swapping pinions to optimize gearing, building independent suspension systems to eliminate the front and rear monoshock, etc.
But mostly, I remember how utterly dishonest the Tamiya marketing materials were, showing cars flying through the air off of steep sand dunes in much the way your xmax is actually capable of today. But those cars were nowhere near being able to do that kind of thing. Not only would those landings have destroyed the suspensions and drivetrains, but they simply weren't fast enough to launch 20 feet into the air as depicted in the videos,. sand flying off the wheels. On any kind of deep sand, they didn't really have enough grunt to get much air at all, and that's with a tiny pinion and aftermarket motor.
But those experiences are why I enjoy your channel today. I haven't driven an RC car in more than 30 years, but watching you and your friends enjoy them so much has been a really fun revisiting of the past. I've been tempted to go spend a bunch of cash on an xmaxx but I know I'll enjoy it for a short span and then it will end up sitting on a shelf, so I'll just continue to enjoy RC cars vicariously through you. Keep it up!
Wow love the racing videos! Your first race car brings tears! ❤❤❤ Just getting into it myself!
I recently found two 2009 Traxxas. A Stampede and Rustler. They have been in storage for 10 years. After a few replacement parts, they run like new.
Same here!
I think it’s great that you can still relive your childhood dream bro. Truly made it in life for yourself 🤙
These RC race videos are always so entertaining! It's very niiice!
Nice to see Retro rc, brings back memories👍👍
Love this. Brings back so many memories. I used to race a Schumacher Cat and Tamiya Avante way way way back in the day (30+ yrs ago). Holy shit I'm old.
OMG, i have the same screwdriver i got when i built my 1st Grasshopper over 30 years ago & used it recently to build a Tamiya Dark Impact!
Hello Kev you got me into all this rc stuff but now I’m loving it
My first rc car was in 1984. It was a team associated RC-10. You Brought back some great memories.
I really like watching these indoor race days Kev, It makes me wish I had an indoor track and a Manta Ray.
Awesome! I wish my local clubs would race vintage. They all take things a bit seriously 🙄
The dreaming before sleeping was the thing that made me so happy in the 90's!faster motors and stuff, cars 1/8 buggy was my dream
I remember my old next door neighbour has a super hornet when I was little I'm 41 now and yet to get an RC car myself I think it's going to happen soon just seeing how much fun they are bloody awesome
I recently purchased an original Manta Ray to run at my local outside track in the vintage class alongside my DT03 in the DT Class. Manta Ray now has 17.5t brushless motor & HW esc. I’ve rebuilt shocks, gearboxes etc & uprated shock towers, centre drive shaft & steering linkages plus added gearbox strengthening parts. Can’t wait to race it in the spring when the season starts. I race GT12 indoors all year round & I’m looking forward to seeing you race yours again.
Super cool seeing vintage cars running around the track! Cool video!
Old is gold! Its really only building these old Tamiya cars that hold my interest in RC.
Woo new video from the best
Thats awesome Kev. Great to see more clubs bring back some vintage classes. 👌🏻👍🏻
Vintage racing looks so much fun. We need some fun vintage racing near me.
Awesome Kev.. love all the old Retro RC's great hearing about your Manta Ray :)
Old cars rule!
Kev i realy think you should do your own track somewhere. Indoor/Outdoor track whaterver you want. You can build it !!
kev, we love to see these videos! keep up the good work. if you heared this comment that would make my year!! you got me into the hobby and i am so gratful! thankyou
nice one kev! I do so enjoy when you go racing. keep the fun coming!
I do love it when you do this sort of content. Nice work!
First Associated buggy we had still used the Mechanical Speed Controller. Was so awesome when we first raced it!
Always a blast watching the videos🎉🎉🎉
My first rc car was a Traxxis TRX3 when they came out in 1993. Loved that car!!
Good vintage car footage. Carpet keeps them nice and clean.
Really enjoyed that, so cool ro see racing like this still going on
Love that video. A lot of memories :)
I still remember some tamiya buggies with The old mechanical speed control... a pain in the a**... 1 servo for steering, another linked to mechanical speed control index. Basically, those old speed control used a long coil wire as Reistance. But electronic speed control changed a lot of things in the world of RC :) :)
it always makes my day when kev posts
I really wanna go back to the 90s, the vibe of everything was so much better than the world today
Dude the Mantaray was also my RC car when i was young. I loved it soo much. And i kept in my name all over the internet since those days 😍
I always love vintage rc cars. I never really owned any as I’m not too old but I guess the oldest thing I would have owned originally if I kept it was the original Tamiya Wild Dagger
My wild Dagger is nuts it has two vintage Titan Motors in it and it is nuts. It needs some repairs to take it out of retirement.
no need to be old! 24 and got into it last year buying an original Frog, then to find out my Dad actually had one too. Now I have a Kyosho Tomahawk, the Frog, Raider Pro, and scx10ii.. never too young, learn off the roots and enjoy the best era to exist
The oldest thing I have is an esc from some time ago no idea but it’s an old vxl esc
@@add2ndedition663 very cool I wish I had kept mine!
@@sqweezzstr I guess your quite right! I suppose I didn’t need to be of age during those great rc years. I’m actually 34 lol 10 years older then yourself. I think I was 12 or 13 when I bought the wild dagger after saving some money mowing lawns. At that time it was new. I did sell it eventually wish I never. But I did buy a Mad Bison, basically a nitro version of the wild dagger a couple years after. I still have it new in the box sealed. Some day I may build it I think
Kev, you crack me up when you say the motor has some compression. It's an electric combustion engine. 😂😂I know what you're saying, it just sounds funny, lol. Excellent video, buddy! I love vintage RC cars.
Theses vintage racing videos are cool to watch
🤩Great video!
Great video keV. Lov the racing vids. Great topic too love the vintage 1/10 racers. I too dreamt about all the upgrades I wanted for my thunder shot.
Thundershot was my 1st proper RC back in the day. I remember reading through the Tamiya catalogue at bedtime and it was all so magical!
Talbot and coffee! Mornin lookin good already! Thanks for all you do Kev!
So cool to see how things have evolved !
Love a bit of old skool! Nice work there Kev
I recently discovered your channel and have spent hours watching, thanks mate your a legend
I think you should start doing more racing videos. It seems rc racing 🏁 is starting to make a come back. I know for sure out here in Arizona
Hi guys loving the racing videos
cool 90s rc car and good race to
I resurrected my original ProCat from 1990, it hadn't been out on a track since 1991, until last week at a Vintage meet in Cardiff.. I was proud as punch to see it running again 😎 it can still cut the mustard!
Hey kev love the manta Ray thanks man
love your videos all ways keep having videos we want to watch :)
I still have my old Tamiya Dirt Thrasher. Same car as the manta Ray, different body. Was my first real rc car
Very good i love rc cars
Radio Shack at Christmas time was surreal.
The biggest buggy's/ monster trucks had two 540 motors..
Hi Kevin Talbot ☺️ brilliant looking car for 30 years old. Iv just bought myself the new ftx ram 3s 1/10 truck watched out for a new video coming soon mate 👍👌😀
I remember my first hobby rc was a Tamiya hornet and my servo was a futaba 3003 I had to save up to get a Novak cyclone my son has it now almost 30 years old or more..love this hobby I still have a lunchbox my mom got me for Christmas back in 1989 or so
I had the Tamiya Super Hornet, my mate had the grasshopper. I still remember spending the whole night building it and not realising I had the suspension parts mixed up and had to strip it all back haha.
One day I upgraded all the electronics and built a cooling intake, I felt so proud of myself.
That old Stanley screwdriver fits everything
Love your videos keep up the great work 🚗
My last 2 years of comprehensive school I’d just given up completely, hated it!
Almost every single lesson me and my mate would get out the tamiya catalogues we kept in bags instead of school books, we had about 5 or 6 from the early to mid 90’s
Work experience back in 95 we were supposed to go to the local college in chesterfield for the day but instead we went to the old model shops in the town center where we’d spend hours talking to the old bloke behind the counter about all the cars.
We never made it to the college at all that day, we ended up in the Golden Fleece where we paid another old bloke to buy us our drinks until we were pissed 😁
The nostalgia from back then runs so deep that as great as todays r/c tech is, it just can’t compete in the same way. You have to have lived it to understand fully what I mean.
Tamiya got more value for money out of the Manta Ray chassis than anything else, ever. I never had one; I had the Bearhawk, which I later sold to a friend, and then I bought a Vanquish which I still have, in a very upgraded form! A few others in my attic like my Schumacher Storm, the Tamiya Jeep Wrangler and an original Hornet.
Great stuff Kev!!!
My first hobby rc car and my favorite is the manta ray in 1994. Also done races with it.
Reminds me of my Hotshot my parents bought me when on holiday in Hong Kong, good times.
Yes Mate !!! Loving the old School 😜
That Cobra hung well with the 4wd's.
Cool looking buggies for sure. Boss cat looked sweet.
You're really getting the hang of it. Tighter racing lines than me if I dare say.
This brings back some memories!😂 The old day's racing my tamiya bear hawk and Schumacher cat 2000!👌🏻
Not matter the vid always look forward to watching Kevin Talbot vids 💯🔥👍
Is that "Hobbywing program thingy" a separate device I need to buy to update the software on the program card?
Love your vidds kev
This vid brings back some memories when I was 10 year old racing. I had an original Schumacher cat from 86-87 so before the pro cat
Nice i love it
Good to see more than bashing and breaking.
Hi bro, got to say you didn't excellent job on this video! really brought back some memories 🙃
To the point that you even used the screwdriver that your dad lent you when you were a kid 👊😉
Seriously thank you for the trip down memory lane 😁
I still use those screwdrivers lol . Did bloody well to be fair Kev. All that really matters was you had fun
That belch at the track had me rolling. XD Great project!
editor chris added that in! haha
Nice work Kev!I can't help but think that Tamiya chassis was a bit behind the 8 ball in comparison to the Schumachers From what I've read Tamiya just weren't up to the same level as other brands that specialised in racing in that era. So coming third really was a good effort.
yeah, Tamiya was kinda like to "go to" brand for casual stuff kinda, like Traxxas today.
Ohhh yess kev let's gooo!!! 👏👏😁😁
Love it
You are the best RC care UA-camr have a great day and merry Christmas
Let's go 🔥
Love the Tamiya's I just got done building the super clodbuster
Sears LOBO was fast as hell back in the day loved that damn thing had a blast with it!
U took it easy on the rest of the field today I see and let someone else win👍
Would love to see some retro racing with stock gear ....I love up grades too but some original cars would be interesting to watch
I just started the video and started saying outloud “please don’t go to the moon”,lol this is so cool 😎
One vintage car: violated with a file! 😂🤣
It had it coming!
I have an old great vigor nitro 1/8 scale it's old needs sorting if you want it Kevin you can have it used to be quick back then
ooo think that was another one of my dream RC Cars when i was a kid!! How much you want for it?
Keep pushing in the next competition 🔥🔥
I've wanted to do this same thing with my LOSI XX from back in the day! Man how I miss that buggy!
Manta Ray Tamiya!
there's also a smaller one for track races
MANTARAY are hard to come by even in Japan. It is a very valuable machine.
