I feel like the online service in this game is glitchy a bit like how did he get in first place even though on the track it showed the player far behind, then it glitches where he's in first place.
Judging off this video alone. Dont think of it as a proper online multiplayer but rather, a time trial mode with active players. The game put the other player in first because they finished first based on time.

There's an update for this no kinect patch called 1.1 You can play online properly with friends. Even some of the issues are fixed, too.
