    And Pathfinder is very rich in Lore. Golarion has a very relatable world to easily make a character backstory with. I'm glad you mentioned it. I think bringing Pathfinder forward is important. A lot or people over look it.

    • @HollowTale
      @HollowTale  6 років тому +2

      I do love pathfinders lore and the system overall! I have been making use of a homebrew world I've been developing for 5 years right now for most of my fantasy themed campaigns, but i used to make use of quite a bit of Golarion's lore. On top of that i agree its really flexible and easy to learn!
      I will definitely be doing more on Pathfinder in the future! Currently debating if to do some more stuff on the playtest material!

    Putting your dice in a cup for rolling helps keep them from flying. I started bringing a large plastic bow because someone always rolls wildly.

    • @HollowTale
      @HollowTale  6 років тому +3

      Oh yeah! When i was running more physical games i had one player whos dice would consistently roll off the table. Honestly why I learned to like dice towers for a while there. Luckily picked up the one for free RPG day years back and it was pretty good for a while! Love the cup/bowl idea!

    4 years late to the party...
    From my experience, because I live in a place where tabletop faming is a rarity the 1st thing I searched for is online community, and 2nd I learned what most people plays in that community, which is D&D. I've been playing for 3 years and now I'm entering my 3rd step, playing other system... solo. I found out that I cant fit my time to most people's schedule, so solo run is pretty interesting for me to try. I've dived into Ironsworn and I really enjoyed it.

    Important thing to know: Do not look to critical role to see how RPGs are actually played. Its an improv theater act played over an rpg system. It's kinda like porn. They are doing the same things mechanically but the emotions are overblown.

      For sure, I was planning on doing a video around expectations some day discussing different expectations for different groups.
      The way I usually see it and tell people about it is that it's like genres of music. Everyone had their own tastes.
      I love running heavy roleplay narrative games but some folks love a good dungeon crawl and there's nothing wrong with either or a mix of both.

      If you cant find local games i do definitely suggest checking online boards such as the LFG board on reddit and the roll20 forums for games. Theres always so many games to play there, but more than that the games usually fill up quite quick for pathfinder for GM's.
      I run some one shots every month in a community and the pathfinder ones are always full up!

    I watched full 18 minutes of this and still have no clue of how this works. I didn't need an instruction to tell me to buy snacks, I need one to tell me how to actually play those. Can players just come up with their own moves or do you get them a list? Do the characters move around the map like in board games (1 point on a die = 1 square)?

  • @marthlink5015

    I've been studying on how to jump into RPGs and playing RPGs for years. Some classic Western styled Rpgs others Jrpgs but they essentially all run the same once people accept a system. It's surprising how difficult it can be to get assimilated into more preferred RPG types and how difficult it can be for people who have a general knowledge or skill to do so but just not the decades of expansive knowledge of the stuff~ sadly when it comes to D&D and i know D&D is an EXPANSIVE community they are by far my hardest to do anything with and yet the one I've tried and still am trying~ even collecting guidebooks in physical copies- which I've not done for any other (cough well tech Gloomhaven which I own the tabletop for). I think so far Warhammer40k and fantasy have been the most kind and generous~ for them it's just a pastime where some even paint pieces n such and gladly welcome newcomers, Sure there are some friendly D&D players similar but man the lore n such is so expansive as is the community... so hard to find the right peeps ;(

    My number one tip for new rpg players:
    Do NOT start with D&D 5e like everyone tells you to. Just don’t. No matter what people parrot at you, it is NOT a beginner friendly game. Sure it’s simpler compared to other dnd editions except the Basic Set. But it’s flat out not for beginners. The abilities are so numerous and complicated that you probably won’t remember anything until five sessions in. The Magic system is outdated and convoluted. There are way to many spells to pick from that all are even more complicated than the basic abilities. And don’t even get me started on the attribute scores/modifiers. New players are NOT going to understand how the scores and modifiers work.
    It’s an ok system and nothing wrong with liking it. But it’s not for beginners. Period. The end. If I had started with 5e, I would have hated the hobby as a whole.
