I honestly love games where that can be the case and it's still a blast to play. I love me some deep combat systems but also... It's nice to not have it in your face sometimes and be able to focus on the roleplay!
@@HollowTale I am going to run it again soon and one of the players hit on the idea of making a sort of Lupin 3rd character who goes around trying to steal priceless items from every city she visits but she plans on making the character really bad at it on purpose. Should be really funny.
I picked this up a few weeks ago to play with my family. Haven’t had a chance yet though. Still not totally sure how to run a “feel good” adventure - the tricks, tropes, etc. Would love to see more videos breaking things down with examples (I tend to loose interest when trying to watch let’s play videos due to the unfocused nature). On a side note, it’s going to be hard for people to find a copy of Ryuutama for a few months. The translator just posted on reddit that the warehouse is sold out. But they are doing a reprint in a few months.
That's amazing to hear! It does feel like it would make an amazing family game due to how light-hearted it can be and how it's focused on that core journey. I will be doing some breakdown series in the future on certain systems (starting with D&D and savage worlds) so I can certainly add ryuutama to the list in the future! I hope the game goes well with the family!!
@@HollowTale welp guess im subbing just in case the ryuutama one shows up down the line plus you have a nice sounding voice will check out other videos too
@@RubescentDragon Thank you so much! I will be doing more system breakdowns soon, they take a while to come out given I like to be able to give a proper look at something!
I've owned a copy of this RPG for almost a year and we have to find someone willing to play with me. Hopefully with this video you can finally help my dream come true LOL
There is one exception to the clearly written rule statement: carrying capacity. The book does not outline that your worn equipment counts as 0 towards carried weight and has a 2nd carrying limit for max item weight worn.
What a nice video, I really appreciated it. Nice music, good flow of images, great flow of the explanation, and examples were very useful. This was a good elaboration of the manual that have a feeling of the game, instead of the usual boring summary of rules with a short opinion at the end that many other videos do.
Thank you! We worked hard on this one it was a really fun one to do. I try to make games sound fun in this series rather than go deep into mechanics for sure!
Amazing! This video is a must for people willing to try out the system. Really gives a clear, well-focused look on the main aspects and let players and GMs know what to expect
this seems like one of those interesting systems that would be a nice break in between big story arcs in my current tabletop game that has been running for almost 2 years now, maybe if we have one of those soon we'll try out this! thanks for opening my mind for this kind of play because I didn't even know there was an entire system for this, I would've probably just edited 5th edition D&D......
Oh yeah for sure! I play a lot of games like these as stopgaps in between my major campaigns (especially with 5e) I love the game but it's nice to sort of refresh myself on what else is out there before jumping back into it! If you do give it a go let me know how you find it! :)
Good description of the game. Some videos talk a lot but don't say much. But this was good. 9:20 Yeah, about those dice... they *all* hurt when you step on them fyi.
That's super cool to hear! I make these videos to spread more awareness of other good TTRPGs so happy it helped! I am just looking for an excuse to do more ryuutama as well! Hope you enjoy it! Let me know how your group find it!
I get that! I am going to be running a couple of one shots that will get me more time with it but idk when I'll get the chance to do it as a full on campaign either! Luckily it's nice and easy to pick up and play if there's ever a chance! I am debating doing something near Halloween as they have some adventures for it on the website for free!
Even if you don't use it as intended there are some game mechanics that could be cribbed for other systems with some work. That travel system in particular would be great for exploration-focused campaigns, and would be pretty easy to adapt to any engine that uses "dice type" stats (eg Savage Worlds). The game itself probably doesn't need to be as "cute" as it looks at first glance either, you could re-theme it to something darker - like have the journey the characters are undertaking be a desperate attempt to outpace the scouts of an invading army and warn the capital city in time to rally a defense, or to lead refugees away from that army when the defense fails.
The “battlefield” mechanic reminds me of the one devised by Fantasy Grounds for their Star Wars tabletop system. I wonder if they took inspiration from it. 😁👍.
cant remember the name of but there is a Japanese horror ttrpg where players play as "dolls" given the creators job at the time of making.i wouldn't be suprised if inpiration came from there.
Great vid! seems like lots of fun. And I'd gladly keep track of my items if they were actually doing something in the game without being at GMs whim if they even matter. :) So it's great seeing that even the simple items are useful.
For sure! I mean the roles are super nice. I love that you can just set roles for players that mean something as the entire game is about the journey! Thanks for stopping by and watching I'm really happy you enjoyed it!
I unfortunately am full on on games! The ryuutama subreddit is an amazing place to look though! As is the LFG one! All the best and sorry for the delay on the reply!
One of my favourite games. Last time I ran it there wasn't even combat until game 6 and the players were still having fun.

@@Ophelia381 let me know how it goes! It sounds great!
Even though I've only been able to run Ryuutama once it's one of my favorite systems to reread. Just a feel-good book all around.
It's such a nice book to read through for sure!
Sounds like a great system for anyone who likes hex crawling. Also, what cute little version of the plague doctor! Lol
Aye! I have redone the art! Glad you liked it haha

Well, color me curious.
The amount of games I have in mind reading this based on Miyazaki style stories is unreal!
@Colin Edwards This sounds like a brilliant premise!!
Our DM is currently running this for us while she's moving and another player is away, we've been having a blast.
Thank you for the little delight

I be there's a Discord where you could ask around. Or am LFG sub-reddit.
*Finally* found a copy of this near me! :D
Thanks for the great vid!
