The Lost Art of Apprenticeship | Freethink Catalysts

- The Master’s Apprentice is a nonprofit that recruits young people from rough backgrounds - and gives them the skills to find quality careers in the Trades.
“There’s a huge gap between youth looking for an opportunity...and businesses looking for quality employees.”
It’s been a problem for a long time. Urban youth without college educations find few opportunities, and often get stuck in menial jobs. On the other hand, many companies and small businesses can’t find skilled workers for good jobs. The training for them seems to have skipped a generation. The Master’s Apprentice is reviving an old idea - apprenticeship - to train urban youth from rough upbringings for rewarding careers. They’re recruiting and paying them while they study vocational education in carpentry, HVAC, masonry and electrical work - and general life skills they may never have gotten in disadvantaged neighborhoods and broken homes. It’s a career path they might never have considered, but it’s providing opportunity and a pathway into the middle class for kids who grew up in poverty.
In the latest episode of Catalysts, a Freethink original series produced with the Stand Together Foundation, we headed to Colorado to see how The Master’s Apprentice transforms young adults’ lives and whether it could be a model for trade schools across the country.

The big problem is the school system. When I was in high school, trade jobs were not even presented to us as an option. They kept telling us we had to go to college to make something of ourselves or be stuck in a fast food restaurant. I've seen so many people that graduated from there bounce around for a few years before finding a trade school, and finding what they really enjoyed. It's hard work, but you get to see your work either become something or see how it affects people. I'd say that's pretty rewarding.
@WB N I've been kicking myself in the ass for not realizing my options sooner. So I understand your feelings. Just remember, you can't change the past, but you do have control of your future. Hope everything works out for you.
Took me 10 years of bouncing around before I became an electrician
Im in grade 12 rn in ontario and nobody said a word about apprenticeships except for thus one teacher laughing at me going into one
While I don't necessarily regret going to college, I definitely wish I'd done more research or put more thought into what I wanted to do with my life. Instead, I let myself be pushed into the path of pre-med and all the competition that came with it. I do have some aspirations of working in healthcare now, but I've decided to not apply for any more degrees and just work for a few years to decide if I actually like it or not. I think there is too much push to have a "definite career" with college... and youth need to have opportunities to explore.
Fun Fact, jobs in those categorys are less effected by automation. Scientist believe that lawyers will suffer far more from automation then plumbers. I guess A.I sucks at laying pipes.
The world has enough lawyers already.
I can guess why plumping is so hands on has to do with regulations, typography and spacial restrictions. I remember a how a plumber rolled his eyes at my fathers work, because my dad laid it a fewer degrees off. This was leading to major blockage. Plumbers aren’t dumb.
Or hanging iron
Ryan Carlen god you’re so edgy dude Jesus fuck
A.I also sucks at fixing a refrigerant leak on a 34 storey building HVAC chiller at 9pm

What do you think - should apprenticeships make a comeback?
Freethink yes yes yes! This is what I need.
100% there is way more to be learned from hands on education than most of us could get from the modern academia approach. Your video just validated my feelings of confusion over the loss of apprenticeship.
Yes. Higher education nowadays is mostly a waste of time and money.
Definitely !!!!!! could i join !!!?

Plumber turned electrician here. Thank you for what you do. I really appreciated the "old farts" that took the time and are still taking the time to mentor me. You guys are rock stars

Was it hard to make the switch? How is it learning electrician? Please tell me ...
Here in Austria all apprenticeships are regulated by the government. Apprentices also have to go to a vocational school. I think every country must have a school path for skilled workers.
Fred I’m sure these students pass some sort of government regulated testing and that this school is accredited in some form. But I think the point is that traditional education isn’t always readily available or necessary.
I have had this dual system as a not finished electrician because I left the school . Horrible people in my class and teacher who would rather discuss anal sex with the class than teaching.I will get my degree in three years externally because of work experience
This is great...pleased to see our local HS adding trades training-actually expanding the campus with new construction to make that possible...it’s so important!
That's awesome! Which local high school is it if you don't mind us asking? Would love to read about it!
Freethink Liberty HS in Colorado Springs, CO, Academy School District 20
i like how this video has no dislikes so far, very informative... good luck to everyone in apprenticeships
This is amazing, speaks to my heart about being a tradesperson. I went into the trades (plumber) to provide for my family. Had a rewarding career in the field and an even more rewarding career teaching my trade a vocational school in British Columbia, Canada. A trades life should not be looked upon as a consolation prize to university. Thanks for sharing and supporting those young people. Keep up the great work.
Being a union electrician is the best decision I’ve ever made! Trades are so vital.

18 y/o recent HS graduate here looking to getting into an electrician apprenticeship at my local IBEW. the fact that this option had never been presented to me before confuses me, I feel a lot of people like me who have no idea what they want to do and only get told to go to college and get a degree would appreciate another option.
daddob a its the best bro dont give up
Why doesn't the USA government integrate apprenticeships to the school system like other countries? It works.
When I tell people I’m in an apprenticeship they don’t even know what an apprenticeship is
The trades are a great way for a young person to go, and I’ll encourage anyone who might not want to attend college to look into this path.
I went through one, now I’m an instructor. I teach Electrical apprenticeship, and sometimes test prep and blueprint reading classes. Going through apprenticeship school has helped my career, I went from apprentice, to journeyman, to master, and now I’m a project manager.
Classes are in the evening, you work during the day. Lots of employers around here will pay part or even all of your school tuition. You work and learn during the day (earning a decent hourly wage), then school one or two evenings per week. Your job is actually part of your training.
I teach at an open shop school. Wages are competitive. Finding work around here isn’t tough.
Unions have great programs as well.
I’m not gonna lie, starting out, you’ll be sorting materials and digging ditches more than the experienced guys, but with hard work you’ll move up fast.
#1 key to success - show up on time
#2 key - stay off your phone and focus on your work.
This will set you apart from other young folks, and accelerate your growth even more.
Im going through Ironworkers local 433 apprenticeship and I love it. It's either you go Union or nothing.
I am a instructor for the Ironworkers Apprentiship for the international Association of bridge structural ornamental and reinforcing Ironworkers . Our generation has given a lot away that my fathers generation fought for. We must get involved to survive the future.
Dennis C. Absolutely - there’s a lot of professional knowledge and capability that feels like it didn’t get handed off and has skipped a generation. It’s great to see people recognizing that and society catching up - hopefully it brings a lot of people opportunities along the way.
Wow. Strong finish about how worthwhile work changes your entire disposition . . . Bravo ! !
I just started my electrician apprenticeship for my local, and man.......it’s freaking awesome. Couldn’t recommend it more to someone.
UK has Modern Apprenticeship Programmes and it's probably the way most people I know. One of my friends is 17 and on £25K a year ($30K). That's because he's on an apprenticeship.
Same in my country the Netherlands.
Interesting. Are there similar programs there to get people into the trades?
Took me 10 years to realize after college that I need a trade, a skill.
Something not everyone can do.
Now am trying my hardest to get into a company for apprentice training.
It's all good my dude, I'm not one to talk because I'm only 20 and not exactly the best handy man, but my dad on the other hand didn't start doing drywalling and taping untill he was 30 and now at 42 he is one of the best drywallers that I personality have seems just because he has such an eye for detail and a perfectionist.
I should mention that he never went to school for any of it either and has learned from the one construction company he worked at when he was still green and what he has taught himself along the way.
If I could show pictures I would.
Apprenticeships I find want people with experience already which makes no sense
Some also want a trade school background.
Not true come out to IBEW local 340 in Sacramento CA. We need alot of apprentices in the apprenticeship program.
@@82Ismael ibew 47 in riverside only takes people with experience and females.
Ibew 640 out here in Phoenix is overflowing with work and will take apprentices just apply, there’s two data centers coming to the Phoenix area and a Nike factory in Goodyear so tons of work and good money
Greasy Kenny in Colorado where they are experiencing shortages and massive demand for construction most companies that I've seen online are wanting one year expreriences
We need more places like this available in more small to medium-sized towns. I know many people that would jump at the chance of this type of education, but there isn't any schooling in the area. Our local tech school does offer classes for things like agribusiness and renewable energy but the only journeyman type of class they offer is welding. To get any of the others the kids need to go about three hours away. And with limited income, and limited transportation, these opportunities need to move closer to those who need it.
Tory Blackwolffe that’s tough - thanks for sharing your experiences on the ground, it’s very useful. That’s cool that your local high school offers those courses, that’s something at least; are there jobs in the area?
For what it’s worth there may be other options for training, like Job Corps or unions, but you probably know better than we do what is available locally.
I am an apprentice quantity surveyor. Honestly, it was the best decision that I've made to date. Definitely will recommend apprenticeships.
Don Afonso great to hear the firsthand perspective! Glad it is working out and good luck.
@@freethink Thank you.
Thank you guys for showing this we need more young people in the trades!
Edwin Serratos our pleasure, thanks for watching!
Fun fact, the pay for this type of work has not kept up with other industries. I'm a third generation tile contractor. I had my sons pursue different employment opportunities than the constitution trades.
As wages stay stagnant for almost all working Americans, their ability to pay for things that are not an absolute necessity diminishes. A lot of people turn towards the do it yourself route. The ones that can afford it have the pick of the litter. I have been fortunate to find a niche that pays better than most, but one more crash of the economy may quickly take that out as well. I only have 5 years until retirement, and I am seriously thinking about turning to other employment.
Victor Schmidt interesting to hear a variety of experiences so thank you for sharing yours. Do you find that other trades, like hvac or electrical, are better paid since people are (probably) less likely to go the DIY route?
@@freethink I'm sure of it. Although as every year passes, people attempt to do more and more that they are not qualified to do. Handy Andys are popping up to do tile jobs build decks, re roof, small electrical and plumbing jobs etc. There are specialized areas that do pay more, but you are counting on an economy that will continue to support the building that is going on right now. A hiccup will cause a decline in demand and if there becomes an abundance of trained workers, people will take lower paying jobs that they are over qualified for to pu food on the table. I'm not a pessimist, I know reality. Since the crash of 2008 the wealthy have not been spending on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th homes like they were prior to the crash. The market for high quality craftsmanship in the finish trades has never returned to pre 2008 levels. There is work to be had, but the pay isn't worth the headaches of designers, architects and general contractor hold ups. In Utah I have seen an increase in $500,000.00-$750,000.00 glorified track homes being built. The only trade that still is making decent money are the cabinet companies. All the other trades are paid like they were doing track work. Cement, plumbing, framers, roofers, electricians, drywall installers and finishers.... most of the trades that you mentioned are making their money on commercial work. Corporations are paying to have the latest and greatest. That to will come to a screeching halt if there is another recession. Also more and more small construction companies are being consumed by larger corporations. Home depot, Lowes, furniture and flooring companies are offering financing and pulling more and more jobs away from smaller companies. It will just be a matter of time until they get into all the trades and control the wages of all but the very best of the tradesmen. Construction is hard on the body and people who work construction need to be compensated far better than the market is allowing now.
@@vic1sch Commercial HVAC guy here. Thank you for your perspective and insight on things. Really shun light on the reality of the situation, something I guess I always knew but hadn't really considered.
I'm one of the better service technicians where I work and guys here were still getting raises and bonuses through the recession so I feel pretty secure. But things dont always go how you want them too.

Well done bro
Niko Silvis hey from the experiences of trying to find a company that will take ou on with entry level how hard was it and are most companies wanting entry level or one year min experience.
ErickDaFoe it wasn’t very hard at all, I live in Colorado I moved here from Pennsylvania. There is more trades work then there is tradesmen to do the work here so many companies are dying for people to work

I graduated and received my certification for electrician I don’t know what it is but I can’t seem to find a job. My Resume is good and I still can’t seem to find any. Every time I get an interview for apprentice they all tell me the same thing “ you need more experience in this field”. I don’t understand how I’m supposed have experience in this field if no one is willing to give me a chance and show me...a lot of my classmates that I graduated are having the same problem. It took one of my friends 7 months to finally find a job as an apprentice hopefully I can find one faster.
When i see real people like you amongst the noise of propoganda it makes me feel deeply depressed because these propoganda videos and articles paint a rose tinted picture of demand i don't think exists
It just doesn't logically make sense how absolutely anything can be in demand if you have over a quarter billion nearly half a billion people in a single country
Nobody is needed for anything right now, people wonder why they can't find a 10 years of experience data server engineer that used to work for microsoft and knows every programming language in existence somehow before they were even invented when they're all fucking dead, retired or occupied making way more than the $15-20/ hour you want to give them
I think it has more to do with the price of it nowadays, I took my 1-2 year carpentry and the 8 books I needed cost 4000 dollars, the course itself costed 5000, I was lucky I was sponsored to go because there was no way in hell I would've been able to afford it, and if I failed the class I would have to pay it all back, plus taking the time off work during this and needing to pay rent and food, then needing to travel back in forth, it's a nightmare, kids are not getting into trades because of the exploitive practices nowadays, like 800 dollars for 300 page book? you could tape a bunch of dollar bills together and still have a bigger book at the end of it. especially since you can get every piece of the book online for free. I have thousands of dollars of code books that I looked at about a dozen times because there is building code apps that are 50× faster to find what you need but I apparently needed these rediculously expensive code books, it's become less of educating the youth and more of squeezing every penny you can out of them.
Hay a Weifield shirt! That's pretty neat!

True stuff right here
I'm a 50% apprentice taper I'm making almost making what i used to get paid in 2 weeks so life is good get in the field
I was a apprentice in Canada, it can be hard depending on where you are, where I was the cost of living was extreme for apprentices, the housing and rental market made it so putting away money for my technical training was just not possible. A 16 year old labourer where I’m at makes more than my journeyman making $40/hr which heavily affects rentals. I had to move away from my town to find a job elsewhere where I could at least compete in the rental market and up out away money for school.
What I don't like is how they make you move after the project is over. You don't get to choose the location.
The sad part is that Norway have skilled trade schools that all are free. No student dept, just wake up and go to school for 2 years, then after that be an apprentice for 2 years then get something called “fagbrev” I think it goes under certificate in the US(?)
I hope everyone gets the options we have when it comes to degrees and schools in general.
I’m honestly considering trade school. My job search has been miserable, and has left me demoralized. Unfortunately, I got into some trouble with the law, and now I can’t get much use out of my 4 year degree they told many like me to get. I need something stable, something that’ll tie me over for at least the next five years. More importantly, I just need someone to give me a second chance.
In the Netherlands we have education linked on several levels. You can start at a trade school, follow up with applied university and if you want to, then go to scientific university.
Great video!
Thanks so much, glad you liked it!
I live in Australia I always hear about a skills shortage in the building industry. I’m 32 years old and have worked in finance for over 10 years I applied for several carpentry apprenticeships without any success. Funny thing is I have experience in this field since I worked as labourer/trade assistant during my late teens. I was told I’m too old to start an apprenticeship despite being fit ?.

Apprenticeships are a huge thing in the UK, surprised that America doesnt really do them on a large scale
Our construction trades are not valued these days every jobsite doesn’t even have clean toilets for us to use on a daily basis society literally treats us like shit even if you’re a journeyman.
That's not society that's the prime contractor that won't pay to have the can cleaned or enough of them on the site.

@Jason LemusI am glad I am not the only one that noticed lol
In the UK apprenticeships are a joke now. For school leavers, wage is a joke, many quit. For older people they won't take on or they pay peanuts. Same with other training schemes they like taking kids plays they get their EU funding ...they don't Wana lose that...but there gonna. They should train medical, engineers, electrical and so on via apprenticeship shouldn't matter age
I'm working on a residential electrician course through Penn Foster. Graduating soon and need to find my apprenticeship for industrial electrician.
@Ryan Carlen Thanks for the heads up. I'll see what they have to say.
In my experience, a lot of companies want trained staff without actually training them. That seems to be the big issue. Just like with everything, you get out what you put in.
I'm 20 and live in Australia I've been living on my own since I was 17. I have been thinking of getting in an electrical trade but I also want to explore life some more. I've been working in this dead end job in a manufacturing warehouse, the money gets me by but I've always thought that there's so much more to my life than this and on many occasions the older men I work with have told me you have all this potential and I'm wasting it here... for 2 years I have heard them say this to me and I can't believe I haven't truly opened my ears to what they're trying to tell me.
Is it possible to take apprenticeships abroad?
No need to be looking abroad for an apprenticeship. Australia has its own apprentice program. Just search on the internet. Doing an apprenticeship is quite popular in Europe, especially in Germany, where I am from.

Not all trades are in Demand. Most trades are not in demand due to automation and over supply. The only ones really high in demand are people who have lots of experience and are willing to work very far such as in mining or in petrochemicals. If you live in a huge city, trades are oversupplied and the number of graduates from colleges are extremely huge. There is a huge demand for CHEAP LABOUR.
In Canada I just got offered a plumbing apprenticeship with an entry-level 6 figure pay.

I am skeptical... Does the certificate awarded at the course's end comply with state or national regulation? In the USA trades are strictly regulated, notably in New York. Do you qualify to join such a board? The suggestion that jobs are ripe for the picking, is not backed up with definitive proof... While its commendable, l would be a bit more skeptical.

@@arguello4037 yeah out here in los angeles the demand is so high the apprenticeships have thousand applicants just for the test to interview ...after that u have to hope u get a spot...ive been in the process over the last couple years 5k people for 30 jobs isnt unheard
@@rustyshackleford2185 thats crazy man. Texas is full of jobs. Lots of people have moved here from Cali
@@arguello4037 yeah ive spent time on fort worth ..i even thought since im trying to break into valero ..maybe relocate to san Antonio where there might be less competition
Rusty Shackleford this is in Denver. Have you tried Job Corps?
I want to start an apprenticeship in electrician. In Los Angeles. How do I get help that I need?
Apparently the USA doesn't focus much on apprenticeships
Enroll in a vocational school and try to work while you're going to class. By the time you get your transcript you'll have enough experience accumulated to test for journeyman within a year.
Thats how it is in Oklahoma anyways. Apprentices need 3 years experience before they can test to become a journeyman. A year at votech counts as two years experience on the field. So, if you work while schooling you'll rack up all the time you need in a year.
Dont get suckered into apprenticing for 3 yesrs straight.
Study, work, and then when you get home tired as shit, study some more through google and youtube videos. Especially on things you worked on that day. Only way you'll succeed efficiently.
Also I recommend plumbing or hvac over electricity but thats up to you
@@yourlocalhuman3526 less competition in the future. I ain't complaining
There’s a shortage, and STILL no one will take me as an el01 apprentice, I’m not sure what it is but in Seattle it feels like all trades, scholarships, etc, go to minorities, even though I’m a minority myself, my skin color is white so that doesn’t really seem to count for much
Kim Jong Chill I can feel you on that, graduated my MAP program with some of the top marks in class and with the dying trade of truck technician I felt like no one would hire me, until I applied to a stupid amount of places and I wasn’t even shy of applying for big positions, eventually I got t. Just keep trying eventually someone will hire you
Signed up for a pre apprenticeship 2 weeks ago, then this shows up in my feed. A sign? Weird ass coincidence either way.
CossackCanuck stick to it you wont regret it
@@davidduran2335 thanks man, really looking forward to something rewarding and enjoyable to do every day!
Fun fact you work for less than minimum wage as an apprentice or at least you do in the uk god knows how you suppose to survive
I am a electrician and today it is hard to find good quality guys. Millennials today are soft and lazy.
How much do you pay an hour? I'm younger than a millenial, i'm gen Z, I used to work 14-16 hours a day 7 days a week barely ever slept have you ever even worked that hard? didn't even complain once. I don't complain but if i see some old fuck pay minimum wage $10 an hour, anything that won't AT LEAST pay rent food utilities and transportation to stay alive i would absolutely be understanding as to why some millenial would be soft and lazy, you aren't even paying for good people therefore you're being a little whiny bitch because they're out there with good positions because they work long hours and never complain or goof around on their phones and are being paid what they deserve
Treat people as a worthless disposable pawn and you will be treated as a worthless disposable pawn, be genuinely interested in someone's story life teach them etc and they will return the favor
Hey are most companies willing to hire people with no experience because in Colorado a lot of companies want or are requiring one year aprentace experience
Wo Jak Exactly what I’m talking about. You were triggered and got emotional about a comment I made.
Eric. Yes. In Nevada. Just about every construction company is short in man power so yes.
@@erickdafoe2723 no, nobody will hire you without employment experience in the exact title you are looking to do, and you will never get employment experience in the exact title you want to do, ever, because nobody is willing to hire you without employment experience in the exact title you want to do. Wonderful huh? Welcome to the real world
Wo Jak Triggered lol.
Eric don’t believe this libtard. I got into the electrician trade with no experience in 06. Of course they will hire people with no experience. What do you think training is?
If you are going to apprentice do it in a union atmosphere where they pay you to learn you have pensions health care and topically much higher wages. Go union .
Is this a union based program?
Dennis C. Many graduates go on to join unions, but it is not required.
It sounds as men skills only anywhere i go.Is there women trade skills too in Fl ? just furious.
CC thelema yes! They have had many women in the program who have found success as well.
Idk about those bags with all those tools. He needs to organize looks cool but come on now.
Who can I join you pls inform me
Ambuj Singh check out themastersapprentice.org!
A lady was mentioned but I saw no ladies or the intention of including ladies in the program. Needs to go both ways man and include it in the curriculum. Cuz most the majority of the boys involved act like douchebags who think women shouldn't be involved I know from experience myself (I'm a welder). Teach the next generation the skill as well as the mutual respect of having the possibility of female co-workers.
Ladys don't want this kind of work. It's too physically demanding. You can't make women want these jobs, can't force women to work them. Accusing the program of sexism is complete ignorance on your part.
And I seriously don't care for people with chips on their shoulders, acting all high and mighty like you're currently doing. Just because you have a pussy and a pair of tits doesn't make you special the slightest bit.
@@user-pc7ef5sb6x1) I did not state that they should be forced. 2) You have no interest in the work so you don't know how unwelcoming the environment is for the majority of women who do take interest in the field. 3) I actual am a specialist. I'm a certified welder and discuss this with fellow female welders about this type of environment. I've never been intimated but I know a lot of girls that are curious but feel that way. Non profits like Women Who Weld by the amazing Samantha Farr were started for this reason. So calm the hell down and take your hesterics out in a gym class because all I hear is someone screaming for attention. Go voulunteer and help others like I do in my spare time, might help with that bitterness you seem to live with.

You need to suck it up and deal with it. Even other men can get singled out in the workplace, you're no special, no different. It's the classic workplace ritual. That's just the reality of working in a male dominated field, they are very competitive to the point it may seem like abuse, but they're just toughening you up, testing your limits. I know exactly what you're talking about. Maybe you should switch careers to a more lovey dovey environment, particularly with lots of women like a medical office with flowers, and babies and shit lmao.
@@user-pc7ef5sb6x Your 7th grade grammar & responses are both piteous and clearly show your lack of comprehension skills, ha ha ha. I work and manage people who aren't stuck in your 1950's dawdling mindset. Again I'm not intimidated I have a great career, I meant for girls and women who do feel that way. Such sad caveman comebacks, it's interesting to see how small minds assay to state what they feel is a valid or effective point. Did mommy not love you? Go get a hug seems like you've needed one for some time.
