Nick’s music is so personal. Each listen is like a private conversation with a friend. No one, NO one, has the magical ability to speak directly to the soul of their listeners quite like Nick. He was a whisperer, a genius.
@@busterMcShamus I was about to comment this haha. I only just started listening to Nick Drake but Elliott is my favorite artist and I suspect always will be. Both of them have these hauntingly beautiful and personal songs
@@sampeirce3036 my favorite as well. Nick Drake is great but he's not the only musician that can "speak directly to the soul"...especially since it's all subjective anyways
I could debate it but what’s the point. Enter John Cale and musically Drakes direction changed for the better, "Northern Sky" and "Fly" are master pieces in my view
There is no debate and it can't be refuted. In that era, he alone stands next to Dylan as folk music's most important geniuses. How devastatingly profound is it that an obscure artist like Drake would subconsciously influence generations of artists who quite possibly were not even aware of his existence. Apart from Dylan, the 2:06 seconds of "Pink Moon" speaks more to me than any entire album of any folk artist I've ever heard. Only "Place To Be" has the same effect on me and quite fittingly is on the same brilliant album.
My buddy just commited suicide. He loved nick drake. I was told this was his favorite by him.. And this is literally the only reason im here. But im glad i made it. RIP Matt. Sleep Easily lil bro
I listened to Nick when I was in my teens in the seventies. Now having returned to his music I see it in a much more fundamental light. He is a poet and musician of the highest order and hopefully in even a few hundred years on he will still be seen as a great singer and songwriter.
in todays world Nick Drake’s music is like a magnetic pole that gathers all the aching hearts, grieving souls, us, the hopeless. i cant find the level of empathy in the world as i read in comments for drake music. lots of us grieving someone who decided to quit, lots of us feeling the darkest of lows. i won’t be the one to give words of hope, i’m not looking for those. but at least i found a corner with people whose feelings i can understand and troubles i can relate, makes me realize we’re not alone in the struggle. nicks music caresses my soul when i feel alone at the deepest of lows.
He was one of the greatest artists of all time. The sheer emotion that stands out from this song and from the rest of this discography bears almost no comparison. This one in particular brings me to tears, in a mixture of awe, joy and deep melancholy. Thank you so much Nick for what you brought into this world.
I just found out yesterday that the girl i loved for 11 years just got married. The pain is somewhat less than i expected as my love for her was always unrequited, and i know she wasnt that great of a human being, quite shallow. But it still hurts. Love isnt logical, i wish to god that it was but i cant help it. This song was the first thing that popped into my youtube and ive been playing this on repeat, to hide from the world. The last line just gets me everytime "oh so weak in this need for you", every young man can relate to this line. Thank you Nick, for articulating the feelings of us voiceless young men.
My aunt has just lost her baby. If I were younger, I wouldn't feel so much pain. But now I realise all her tragedy... She's a very nice person and did a lot of good things for me. Can't stop crying and listening to this
I absolutely can't stop playing this song, over and over again. It captures, incredibly vividly, the solemn state of a fragile mind in a humble solo performance. I wish I could write music like this. Think I'll buy myself a cheap acoustic and start pouring out emotion like this. Refreshing and inspiring in so many different ways. Thanks for posting, cheers.
When I was a kid, I thought Nick Drake's guitar playing was kind of shaggy. Listening to his stuff now though, I can hear all these subtle little musical things he's doing that I wasn't clever enough to appreciate back then. Like the way he mutes the strings with the heel of his hand and thrums the lower notes during the verse, but then when he climbs up out of it at the end he lets all the strings open up with all these beautiful chiming highs like glints of reflected light. And the rhythm of the song accented by his hammer-ons on the bass creates this gentle rocking like someone wrapping their arms around their knees and self-comforting while they talk to themselves. And he sings it with such quiet detachment. It's breathtaking.
I'm pretty sure it gave him severe anxiety. He devised 14 different guitar tunings for about 40 songs releasing 3 albums. But as he would switch from the different tunings on stage the crowd would grow impatient and boo him until the point he'd get up and leave
It's even sadder that his anxiety and depression kept him locked up within himself and rarely played live. I can't help but wonder where he'd be today and how his popularity would've grown if he'd had people support him and back him more and he listened to the advice of others more... he might still be with us today and released more wonderful music
This song really captures that sense of loss you feel as you grow older. I think everyone feels that. Have you noticed the lyrical structure is almost identical to 'Help' by the Beatles? John Lennon must have been about the same age as Nick when he wrote that. It's definitely mid-twenties when it starts to hit. God bless music xxx
I looked at his albums on Spotify and I glanced and read "Five Leaves Left" as "Five Years Left". The album was released in 1969 and he died in 1974, five years later.
Something about this song, I never knew Nick obviously, but something about the plaintiveness about this song especially absolutely breaks my heart. I know I could have been a friend to him.
Instantly brought tears to my eyes, Half way through now and really listening to the lyrics, I am bawling, tears running down my face. Theres something so true in the way he plays and sings. I just want to give him a big hug. :'(
A very dear friend introduced me to Nick Drake, I teared up to the last stanza, the last line especially.. 'Oh, so weak in this need for you'. Love you always, forever! miss you!
Nicks music and scales are therapeutic. His voice complements the sound of the light rain in drizzle or the whistle of the mellow wind. Thanks for putting this video with lyrics up. He's amazing! When he was alive he was not recognized much, but has become more popular throughout the years. You mentioned his raw, haunting voice, and his guitar playing is amazing. One of my other favorite songs of his is Place to Be, definitely worth checking out. ☮️
When I was young, younger than before I never saw the truth hanging from the door And now I'm older, see it face to face And now I'm older, gotta get up, clean the place And I was green, greener than the hill Where flowers grow and the sun shone still Now I'm darker than the deepest sea Just hand me down, give me a place to be And I was strong, strong in the sun I thought I'd see when day was done Now I'm weaker than the palest blue Oh, so weak in this need for you
"Place to Be" by English singer-songwriter Nick Drake, track 2 from his third and final studio album "Pink Moon" (released in the UK by Island Records on 25 February 1972) Lyrics: When I was young, younger than before I never saw the truth hanging from the door And now I'm older, see it face to face And now I'm older, gotta get up, clean the place And I was green, greener than the hill Where flowers grow and the sun shone still Now I'm darker than the deepest sea Just hand me down, give me a place to be And I was strong, strong in the sun I thought I'd see when day was done Now I'm weaker than the palest blue Oh, so weak in this need for you
I love this song, he has the best songs. and oh so true. I was green once, and now I understand so much more, but how I wish I could return to the days of childhood. My biggest concern was falling out of my treehouse. Love makes us weak and I want to be strong, but it is hard.

"And now I'm older, see it face to face" He seems to struggle pronouncing the word "older." I think that's one of the things that makes his music so unique. And when he says "pink, pink, pink, pink" it sounds like "ping, ping, ping, ping" I know when I saw that Volkswagen commercial I couldn't understand what the guy was singing but it sounded so cool.
