If Claude's girlfriend was still alive, I imagine he could have at least seen her one last time and even meet her family. Who knows maybe he and Ray got to celebrate the new millennium with them before passing away.
I loved Martin Lawrence growing up. I know Eddie was the more famous one, but Martin just made me happy inside. There was something endearing about him.

Claude was the problem. He didn't appreciate Ray for his escape attempts even though it backfire. When his former girlfriend asked for a appeal for Ray but refuse stating he's the blame for everything.
Claude was always selfish throughout the movie until this point. He finally realized Ray though it was his fault was genuinely sorry and cared about him.

In a sense this scene was a homage to the film Brubaker with Robert Redford. Inmates were also standing on bottles as punishment. Also actor Brent Jennings (Hoppin' Bob) played in Brubaker and was a trusty in that as well.
