- Attempting Corn At The River Farm, Maintaining Clover | Midwest Whitetail
On this week’s episode, we head out with Jared Mills who mows over a small clover plot that was recently planted. He explains why clover plots are his ideal food plot for deer hunting and dives into his preferred methods for maintaining them. Then, we move to the river bottom farms with Mike Reed and Rye Ludwig who gear up to plant corn. Mike provides a quick update on a few of his off season projects, and after moving to his 28 acre piece to finish planting, he discusses a few bucks he hopes to target in the area.

Totally agree on clover. Good for almost all occasions and low maintenance.
How y’all only have 122k subs blows my mind. This is a 1m channel all day long everybody needs to wake up!! Keep up the great content I’m over here taking notes. Virginia.
Totally agree
Thanks for the kind words Alex! We are very grateful for each and every one of our viewers and the opportunity to do what we love!
1000% agree. This is BY FAR the best whitetail channel in the industry.
The high dollar commercial hunting channel
Good stuff. I need to try some fences as I'm limited on plantable acres. Nothing in the feed thats not in the burned native veg.
Thank you from WNY
Thanks for watching David!
I want to see a video of Jared and Mike’s relationship and how they’ve become friends and are able to manage their farm together on the river. It would be very good video I believe and help out many hunting buddies.
That would be a great video, we will do some brainstorming on that. Thanks for watching Cody!
When 1/3 of your clove blooms are brown it's time to mow. This spreads some seed, the plant is ready as it has produced seed and new growth is more palatable. Just some farmer thought.
Thanks for the tip!
Man this channel is awesome. I look forward to watching every time I get a notification! Don’t change anything, intro included.
Every great show has an either catchy intro or just a memorable one. Keep going content is great! More viewers on the way no doubt!
Thank you for the kind words, we will keep doing what we are doing!
I mow once to twice a year on clover and spray once to twice a year for weeds on clover …the last mowing should be the last weekend of September so fresh growth is there come October
That is an ideal strategy Benjamin, good luck this fall!
Thumbs-up!

Thanks for watching!
Clover should only be mowed once a year. Routine mowing can induce weeds by the free space created within the stand. Spray once per year with appropriate herbicide and mow once late summer when the clover has become somewhat senescent. Butyrac + clethodim is great tank mix for clover weed control.
Btw, if you guys are surrounded by big ag why don't you implement more native cover? Seems you would get all of the daytime activity before they went out to the commercial ag fields around your farms. I get hunting a clean and neat bean or corn field late season but it feels like you're spending a lot of time fencing out deer for a food source that they will mostly use at night. But again, I get how awesome it is to see a big buck chase a doe in the rut across a standing bean or bushhogged corn field.
I freakin love Midwest Whitetail! Good luck with the corn, can't wait to see how you guys make out.
Thank you for your support Garrett, we will be sure to keep you updated on the status of the food plots!
Great show as always. Thank you. I missed the episode that covered when you put the electric fence in. How can I find that? Keep the great episodes coming!!!! Thank you
We have shown the fences occasionally but it hasn't been a main topic this year. Here is a link to a video from a couple of years ago on how to set up the Hot-Zone fence: ua-cam.com/video/YATFdowssP8/v-deo.html
Great video guys. One thing I would've liked to see is Jared walking that clover plot before he mowed it. With clover that high, and at this time of year, I always walk my plots to check for bedded fawns. I had a close call a few years back and won't make that mistake again. Another good reason to only mow once in late summer or early fall, and before a rain if you can.
Jared and all of the guys are extremely cautious when mowing. Fortunately using a zero-turn gives much greater visibility when mowing. Thanks for watching Kirk!
Thanks for the code! Just ordered a new set of Platinum strings & cables
Awesome, you won't regret it!
That’s a nice beard you got growing Mike!
Mike always has the most epic beard!
Glad to see the river farm getting some love! I’m about to drive to Iowa and check those willow saplings y’all transplanted myself lol
The willows are doing well but it will be several years before they are big enough to provide the screen that we desire. Thanks for following along Ben!
What can I spray in my clover plots that will kill off weeds but not clover?
That would be Clethodim, it will take care of the grass and weeds!
What part of the Midwest are you guys from? I’m from Chapman, Ks
We are mostly located in Southeast Iowa!
Great video! Any update on the willow saplings that were planted last year? I guess they were actually willow branches vs saplings.
The willows took nicely but they still have several years to go before they are large enough to provide a screen like we intended them to. Thanks for watching Garrett!
GMO chem deer
Surprised mike didnt plant Non-gmo seed.
Good info but I sure do miss Bill and his videos. No offense you guys have good content !
We appreciate you watching!
Shorten the intro or better yet get rid of it. It's an automatic skip the first 45sec of each video.
