Personally, since I will be cleaning the rifle long before it's going to get dirty enough to cause malfunctions, I'd rather have too much oil, I guess, if I'm going to err in one direction or the other. Wear / damage of metal parts from the friction of under oiling cannot really be undone, whereas, no matter how dirty my well lubed AR gets, I can clean it up to new condition pretty easily.
I am 60 years old. For the last 46 years, I have been over lubing all of my firearms. I never had a misfire or a malfunction caused by too much oil. I recently watched 2 guys on a UA-cam channel submerse multiple firearms in tubs of oil. All the firearms continued to fire perfectly while splashing oil on the shooters. None of my firearms have rust on them, and I will continue to over lube all my firearms. Thank you!! I enjoy watching all your videos.
For me, the AK is a bit more of a chore to clean thoroughly. Yeah, the AK might continue operating longer without cleaning, but that doesn't mean much to me. I'm not going to "not clean" any firearm I own just because it might not malfunction. So what if it will continue to function (probably) even as rust and crud continues to build up. I'd rather not have that in a gun I pay good money for and intend to keep almost like new for decades. :-)
It would help a lot for newcomers to the AR, to have a good view of exactly where the extractor should be positioned when replacing the bolt. Ex. 9 o'clock, 7 o'clock position, etc.? Like all your videos, this is very professional quality, with great narration, and informative. I always look forward to your reviews.
Cleaning is half the fun of shooting. When I bought my first rifle, an old Yugoslavian Mauser, I used to sit in front of the tv and take it apart and put it together over and over. I couldn’t take my hands off that thing!
I've never loaded military rounds. One of the attractions for me early on to the military calibers was the availability of surplus ammo. Even though it might not appear that way in the videos, I shoot way more volume of handgun ammo than rifle ammo, so I concentrate my reloading endeavors in that area.

it is relaxing. The other day i had to do a general (key word) cleaning on the units C7's (canada, but still an AR) i swear this one....oh boy, someone F****D up the bolt face was literally blue in what i assume is rust. about an hour later i finished scraping all the S*** off. and moved towards the upper... @@hickok45 thanks for taking the time to respond, and even more so to make these videos. Thanks, but be careful what you wish for! In a "TV show" I'd have to do what everybody else does: short 10-second segments of dramatic and / or unnatural voice. The next time you're watching a "Reality Show," ask yourself if that is the way people actually talk when you drop in to a pawn shop, gun shop, etc. Little unnatural statements that are obviously set up and rehearsed are what I see. It's pretty obvious. I'd miss just talking about the guns the way I want.
I can't stand reality shows or so-called "unscripted" shows because they are scripted or the shows would be of people barely talking and walking around so they have to prompt them to say and do stuff, all I ask for is for them to ask real questions and engage in conversations that's on their level, not an Ivy League professor.
I learn something from every one of your videos. I've been cleaning my AR for twenty-something years and always take wayyy to long to do it - it's so bad that sometimes I don't go shooting because I don't want to spend 1-1/2 hrs afterward cleaning it. You made it look so quick and easy, I'm going to follow some of your tips and not be such a crazy clean-freak!
The only real way to clean the bolt on these guns is with an ultrasonic cleaner cause of all the s all spaces and ports. If you let it get dirty and don't clean it for a while the carbon will harden and has to be scraped and picked loose in hard to reach spots. The more oil you run in them the more they will collect gunk. I'm no fan of direct impingement.
+Peter Johnson so... This is not a way to clean an AR? I plan on buying AR, shootings it a few sessions then I get deployed for 6 months.. How do a clean after light usage and ready for semi long term storage?
Thanks much Hickok 45 for showing us this. Especially good for new owners of the fine AR 15. Now that I'm disabled and in almost constant pain, I don't shoot anymore, but getting an excellent gun smith to clean mine up for long term storage. I sure do miss going shooting like when I was younger and a lot more able.
I love how united hickok45's followers are. A lot of gun videos on UA-cam consist of people cussing each other out over which AR-15 is best or which carry caliber is better. People are so nice here :)
That's because here, we love the good ol' boy logic that the best weapon and caliber is the one you have available to you, and that you're proficient with. After all, dead is dead, be it one shot, or many. If you can walk away from a firefight, well, you did something right.
As a firearms novice, this video helped tremendously. Extremely easy to follow and the explanations for doing any of the steps are thorough. I felt intimidated about taking my AR apart but it felt like a walk in the park with this walkthrough.
Stripped and Cleaned a Maverick 88 with this Ballistol stuff, put it in the gun safe for no lie about 7 months (Jan - August) took it out to change the barrel for hunting and the lube was still there, it didn't dry up, wow, my mind is still blown, thank you Hickok
My guess is there's no air/Airflow in the safe so naturally it cant dry lol It is made to store your weapons so it would make sense that it would be oil environmental friendly for the oils and lubes on the guns stored. -Disclaimer NOT ALL GUN SAFES ARE BUILT THE SAME.
Im 59 and have been around and owned guns all my life, but just bought my first AR(Ruger 556), and your videos on the AR have been very informative, an fun to watch. Big fan
This is so good. I've had my AR for about a year now and I've watched a variety of cleaning and lubing video's. I keep coming back to this one though. It's taught me the most and I find this to be the most reliable and trustworthy. Nothing compares to this guy. Thanks Hickok 45!
Even though I have watched this video several times every time I clean my AR I come back and double check. I have seen so many videos on cleaning an AR and his just makes the most sense. Thanks hickok!
Just bought my first AR 5.56 Ruger , your breakdown was thorough and easy to follow. I’m confident I can break down & clean with your video help. Thanks for taking time to show us.
My first AR-15 was an M16A1 issued to me in 1972. In 1977 I gave it back and never picked one up again, until recently! Hick reminds me of SFC Roosevelt Cook, who, at Fort Lost in the Woods, taught us well how to use and maintain that baby. What a trip down memory lane!
Just greased my AR for the first time even after I put over 300+ rounds through it dry. Now it is virtually silent when I charge the rifle. It is a dream to shoot with it now!
ElitePWNSFace Look up Law Abiding Bikers cleaning video. Its better imo. This guy lubes his gun WAAAY too much. Causes extra build up and can cause fouling. Carbon sticks to the lubrication in your gun. Just a tip bud.
James DF785 If the lube is non-ionic, it will not attract dust and crud. Furthermore, most spray lubes flat out direct you to "saturate all internal and external parts". If worst comes to worst, you can always just wipe off anything still soaked.
Just got my first Ar15. Thanks for the instructional video ( the way you do it). I’ve always said “ this is how I do it but it isn’t the only way. Got a lot to learn about this rifle. You make it look easy.
Awesome Silver same her man. I just picked up a diamondback bd15. love this rifle but wasn't sure how to oil properly. figure it's like all my other firearms but figure Hickok would know. lol
Well, you CAN constantly clean it and "keep it wet" as Hickok put it, OR, you can just run it totally dry like it was designed to be run, as it's a self-lubricating design with carbon being the lubricant. Lube plus carbon makes sludge - which must be constantly cleaned. If you run it dry, the carbon stays powder-like, and you have yourself a carbon-lubed system. Hickok seems to be more of a pistol guy. His method of maintaining his AR-15 does work, so you can do it either way. The AR-15 is either no manual lubing of the BCG (with periodic inspection to remove any carbon caking), or constant lubing and cleaning of the BCG. The choice is entirely up to your discretion, but pick one, and stick with it. Heck, if you're rich enough to have 2 AR-15s, try one method on one, and the other method on the other one. One totally dry, the other totally wet.
It is a really heavy gun I got a hold 1 when I was 15 years old I made a appointment to meet a sheriff and his dog I asked him if I could hold his rifle he said yes and he took the magazine out of it I was surprised to see how big the bullets were I didn't know it was a AR-15 I was surprised to see how heavy it was
It took me longer to clean my S&W model 66 revolver than it did to clean my AR-15. It was the first time I cleaned my AR-15 since buying it a few months back. I was surprised how easy it was to field strip the bolt, clean out the upper and lower receivers and put it back together. The design of the AR-15 is brilliance!
Hi Hickok - Love your videos. Earlier this year I bought my first 22 auto in many years. It was time to retire the High Standard. I bought a Sig Sauer Mosquito - Nice looking 22, and it has a decocking lever. It turned out to be a problem child in most every way. FTE's, and FTL. It came with a little plastic container that said Mil-Comm TW25B on it . I finally looked it up a few weeks ago. It is the standard lubricant of the US armed forces and 20 other countries now. Live and learn - Life is good!!! Cleaning your firearm while shooting is a good thing!
The video worked out great. I got out my table, cleaning supplies and new ar-15 and just followed along. Everything went back together like I was an old pro even though this is the first time I have cleaned it or more so getting it ready for it's first use tomorrow. Great video.
Thank you for the vid, I just got my first AR I was afraid to shoot it because I was uneducated in the cleaning proses. I feel really confident now thanks again. Keep up the good work.
Over 4 years after you made this video and IMO it is still one of the best AR cleaning videos for new AR owners. They do like to run wet and it does take a lot to balance in moon dust environments where it rains a few time a season, but we do not have to deal with that in our nation.
Just like You said, there are seasoned shooters and there are also many new guys in the field. Thank You for making it easy, and explaining how and why for everyone looking for answers. Your channel is making a lot of good for all shooters, starting from very important basic safety rules, cleaning, maintenance and ending with reviews of fascinating guns, squib loads, and guns shooting from an open bolt, also making ranges a safer place. Keep up the good work, I always enjoy Your updates. PS. Like somebody said here, You are like a Dad to my guns if I need an advice on a subject, I start from looking here and I have never been disappointed.
I am also a new AR owner and really like your down to earth, non-fussy presentation and attitude. It seems your experience has led you to the point of practical solutions to real issues. I will keep watching.
FELLOW AMERICAN GUN OWNERS, I have talked to many shooters that had occasional malfunctions after cleaning and storage and did not know the real cause! Be aware that gun oil CAN AND WILL seep into your ammo primers. I have known people that have sprayed their guns and magazines with aerosol gun oil before storage then had dead ammo or worse, super weak powder and bullets lodged in the barrel because the burn was so weak. How bad would it suck to reach for your rifle in an emergency and pull the trigger on dead ammo? Lube your guns but keep the ammo clean. No one talks about this.
Yes, you want to keep oil off your ammo; however, years ago I did some testing of that. I sprayed down ammo with all sorts of lubricant and let it soak. I even submerged a bunch of reloads and factory loads in a jar full of WD-40 for weeks. Every one of those rounds fired except one handload. I was totally surprised.
It was the Browning spray gun oil that caused my problem. I coated a Hungarian PA 63 with it because I leave it in a humid location (workshop garage)and it was rusting a little. It sat for several months loaded after I sprayed it down, and I decided to empty the magazine and pull off the rounds real fast. When it stopped shooting I started looking for the problem. It actually had two rounds lodged in the barrel and the third one wouldn't chamber.!!! I am guessing the primers were igniting yet the rest of the powder was polluted and wet. Exact same thing happened to a buddy of mine. Doing storage and soaking his loaded revolver. (He swore it was the ammo until I ask him about using spray oil on the entire gun)...Now I keep the handgun in a ziplock bag and the ammo in another seperate ziplock bag lol! It was the same Browning green and yellow can of spray that he used too.
I recently drank the AR koolade and bought one to add to my firearm collection. Having a blast learning about it and developing quite a new respect for the 5.56 ammo. Your video was a very helpful instruction on how to take apart the bolt assembly. Surprisingly similar to the gas systems on my shotguns. Same concept I mean. Thanks again!
Ty soooo much! I just purchased my first firearm. It so happens to be an ar15. Dpms gave me a great operations manual with well illustrated instructions on how to field strip my firearm, and you have given me the joy or it’s first cleaning and lubrication instruction. Now that it’s lubricated and properly reassembled, I can’t wait to break in the barrel so I can break it down again! Then comes the fun of dumping a whole mag threw it!
I bought a Glock 43 yesterday and went to the range today and shot it along with my AR-15 I've owned it for 4 years. Only fired about 200 rounds through the AR and never cleaned it this well because I was ignorant. Watched this video and went to Academy and purchased some real cleaning tools and oil. My bolt was DIRTY! Thanks for the video man. I bought an "AR-15 Scraper" tool. I have been watching your videos for years and I love every one! You have so much knowledge it's great to have my questions answered in your videos. I loved your $500 1911 vs. $3000 1911! I am buying a 1911 soon.
You were talking about different lubes for firearms, my Dad always used 3 in 1 Oil on his when I was a kid, so after I got my first gun at age 8 that was what I started with, and is all I still use today 41 years later! I really enjoy your videos, thanks for taking the time to make these and put them up here for us to enjoy!
except without the stoner hippie talk. Lol. You won't hear him say about the beautiful bolt carrier like Bob and his beautiful colors. I was watching him once (probably high) talking about the cloud he painted and then he stopped talking for like 7 seconds and said sorry I got distracted looking at the cloud. lolol. Bob is an amazing painter like hickok45 is a crazy good shot.
You'll want to use Graphite in the desert environment for lubrication instead of no lubrication, but no lubrication would be better than using oil in the desert for sure.
@@brianbkaraoke This is good stuff. They didn't give us any graphite, just GI CLP. We sprayed it on, and wiped it clean as good as we could. Didn't seem to give any problems, but I wasn't an "operator". Just a guy with a wrench and an A2 to help me sleep at night.
great video ill remember to keep it oiled, ive kept it clean, i clean after every good day of shooting, i had been oiling it a little but not everytime thx
This is a very old video BUT still very very educational and helpful. Just bought my first AR and a big thank you for all your contributions to the gun community.
Easier way...50 gallon drum of rem oil...don't even break it down..throw it in optics and all...leave in there for about a week...pull it out shake it off....start shredding...repeat proscess

You made it look so quick and easy, I'm going to follow some of your tips and not be such a crazy clean-freak!
Same
The only real way to clean the bolt on these guns is with an ultrasonic cleaner cause of all the s all spaces and ports. If you let it get dirty and don't clean it for a while the carbon will harden and has to be scraped and picked loose in hard to reach spots. The more oil you run in them the more they will collect gunk. I'm no fan of direct impingement.
So basically spray everything with Ballistol and wipe it down.
+Peter Johnson ain't that the truth
+Peter Johnson so... This is not a way to clean an AR? I plan on buying AR, shootings it a few sessions then I get deployed for 6 months.. How do a clean after light usage and ready for semi long term storage?
yup, spray n pray that will be clean lol
Peter Johnson but that is exactly how you’d do it if you’re in the service just swap out Ballistol for clp which is basically the same stuff
@@mrhellotherehowareu1384 US Army 91-96 shield/storm and we were still "White gloving" our weapons, and used CLP, do they not do that anymore?
True.
Love you bro!
🍻
As a firearms novice, this video helped tremendously. Extremely easy to follow and the explanations for doing any of the steps are thorough. I felt intimidated about taking my AR apart but it felt like a walk in the park with this walkthrough.
What a difference a good teacher can make, right?
Just bought Ballistol and the barrel scraping tool on Amazon. Can't wait for them to arrive. Super helpful video
I just purchased my first AR-15 and I thoroughly enjoyed this video for cleaning
After seeing newer then older videos I’ve realized that Hickok hasn’t aged a day, this is proof that led therapy is real.
Cleaning my AR-15 was surprisingly easier than I expected. Didn't have a bore snake, so I'll need to invest in one. Life is good 👍
AWESOME as always! I love your philosophy I have lived by all my life: "Use what works and do what works."
Hickok slaps a little Ballistol on his face after a shave. This guy is awesome, so down to earth.
You sir are still a teacher, another worthwhile class!
I love how no nonsense he is. It's nice to have that casual type of shooter to watch that is entertaining to listen to.
Just greased my AR for the first time even after I put over 300+ rounds through it dry. Now it is virtually silent when I charge the rifle. It is a dream to shoot with it now!
Picked up my first AR today. Thank you for the video.
FuzedBox Really? Sweet I never knew that. Thanks for the tip. But will it still attract carbon build up?
James DF785 Some claim to not attract carbon, but I haven't tried first hand.
I got the Ruger AR 556. Wanted just a starter gun that i will probably add furniture later on and a nice scope.
I just purchased an AR-15 and your cleaning video was excellent showing how to break it down cleaning the basics. Thank you.
Just got my first Ar15. Thanks for the instructional video ( the way you do it).
I’ve always said “ this is how I do it but it isn’t the only way. Got a lot to learn about this rifle. You make it look easy.
My god Hickok45 how do you get anything done if I had a backyard like that I would live back there.
Thank you in 22 your still the best teacher ever! ❤
Hickok is like father figure for my guns i come here when i need help with things .... I just got AR15 so i am Learning how to clean it: :)
Same thanks for teaching me how to do this UA-cam Dad
9 years later and this is still my favorite AR cleaning video.
Agreed, very thorough video.
Just bought my first AR 15, Decided on the Ruger AR 556 after seeing your videos on it.
When I saw that C.A.T. M-4 tool online, I thought it was just a gimmick. However, after seeing you demonstrate how to use it, I'm now a believer.
This guy provides more knowledge about firearms than the NRA, wikipedia and 10 gun forums combined. Hickok45 is a legend!
Even though I have had an AR for a while, I always check your videos on different subjects. I always learn something! Thank you for your time.
Thanks Hick, I just purchased a AR for my collection. Love this gun, much more refined than my AK. Great cleaning vid. Thanks,
Thank you for the vid, I just got my first AR I was afraid to shoot it because I was uneducated in the cleaning proses. I feel really confident now thanks again. Keep up the good work.
All the little parts can be overwhelming
PS.
Like somebody said here,
You are like a Dad to my guns if I need an advice on a subject, I start from looking here and I have never been disappointed.
So glad you you are a real person and not a Swimsuit Model Kinda guy, Here in Kentucky your the goto man for information
Lewis Begley So, you're saying you like the fact that I am ugly! Got it. :-)
+hickok45 I think he wants to see you in a swimsuit o_O
+hickok45 well...I am glad I don't look like you.
So agree with this. Hickok represents "the real" person!
Hicock45 for president!!
all I use is ballistol to now thank you hickock
I mix it with 9 parts water for my leather boots. I love Ballistol!
I am also a new AR owner and really like your down to earth, non-fussy presentation and attitude. It seems your experience has led you to the point of practical solutions to real issues. I will keep watching.
I can just sit and watch Hickok45 Videos for hours and hours.
Not recommended by me; my method has worked great for over a decade. Others' experience may vary. :-)
Thank you about to get a bore snake 🐍!
I’ve been watching your videos for several, many years. I’m back to get another walk thru again. Thank you for everything brother.
Even after I’ve cleaned my AR15 more times than I can count. It’s still satisfying to watch this.
The CAT M4 tool is pretty cool.
Handier than a pocket on a shirt
New AR owner here. This is a big help. Thank you sir!!
Just got my first AR, thanks for the tips,...
Very helpful I'm 48 started shooting 3 years ago your videos are done with patience and knowledge thank you for all your experienced advice.
Thanks for introducing me to the CATM4 Tool!!! AWESOME!!!!
Your the best brother.. Keep up the great work..If you get banned by UA-cam I'll follow you anywhere... Keep us posted!
just picked up an ar15 before they get banned in California before next year, great video
me too.but I'm on the waiting list
I got like 4 more days on a ten day process
+joe buck got my baby already
joe buck wait is it really going to get banned?!
Tsar Peter I 3years later and its still not banned lol
I really enjoy your videos, thanks for taking the time to make these and put them up here for us to enjoy!
you're all business , like the bob ross of guns
except without the stoner hippie talk.
LMAO
"And here we have our happy little trigger group. We'll just put a dab of lube here... and here. That'll be our little secret."
Now that you mention Bob Ross and guns , he served in U.S. Air Force from 60's to 80's. He was not deployed to Vietnam during his service though.
No happy little accidents though lmao
"These AR-15's are so much fun to shoot, YES!"
Had to google the Cat M4 tool, Amazon does have them forsale.
Everytime i get a weapon that is new to my collection, i come to your channel to learn about it, thanks for doing what you do
The best gun guy there is and gives the best reviews and does the best at gun cleaning and learned alot from watching videos like this
You remind me of Bob Ross, " a little here a little there"... "you can add more oil, If you want".... Great Videos!!! 👍
We kept them dry in the desert to keep the dust from building up in the action. Keep her wet every where else.
I understand that bro, we were more concerned with the humidity n moisture , early 70's
great video ill remember to keep it oiled, ive kept it clean, i clean after every good day of shooting, i had been oiling it a little but not everytime thx
This is a very old video BUT still very very educational and helpful. Just bought my first AR and a big thank you for all your contributions to the gun community.
Thank you Hickock45. Firearms enthusiasm skipped a generation in my family so you have been helping me compensate for an improper upbringing.
Easier way...50 gallon drum of rem oil...don't even break it down..throw it in optics and all...leave in there for about a week...pull it out shake it off....start shredding...repeat proscess
hahaahhaa
I wouldn't suggest putting the optics in there!!
@@pole_barn_builder Optics. And. All.
Somebody will read this and do it lol
JACKASS....... TRIPLE7
Thanks for taking the time to educate us!
Anyone using motor oil to lube their AR? Hearing that it is just as good if not better for lubricant use..
ed0985587 a friend of mine uses transmission fluid in a syringe.
ed0985587 The guy who is on the channel VickersTactical is a big advocate of motor oil.
Vegetable Oil! Works wonders
Smart man. Very good cleaning vid.
You remind me of my grandfather. Like him, you seem down-to-earth, rational, and like to keep things that many folks over-complicate simple. I love your videos and have been watching them since I came across your channel about 10 years ago. Thank you, sir, for sharing your knowledge and always demonstrating safe firearms practice.
In these times of need generations that follow will look to the previous that sacrificed and learned and hope to do the same. My mother’s maiden name is Hickok maybe you are a distant relative. Anyways when the world is burning the next generation will preserve what is right and knowledge leads the way. Thank you for your time Mr. Hickok your videos are priceless.
We need more men like him in this world.
i use 10w40 motor oil
Mobil 1 squad
Remind me to never hang out at a shooting range with you. :-)
no
Thank you hickock 45 for showing me how to clean my brand new AR 15 could not have done it without you!!!
Just bought my Colt LE6920 Magpul edition and put the first 100 rnds through it today. Your videos have always helped me make educated purchases and helps me learn about a bunch of firearms I personally have not been able to put my hands on. You are a gentleman and a scholar! I commend you Hickok!
