This is impressive and coming exactly at the right time as I was about to create QR codes for my business. Thank you so much, Gary. Great and relevant content as always!
You never cease to amaze! Thank you. BTW, I was at a trade show this week and a friend of mine there just switched from Windows to a Mac. I have directed him to your channel to get him "most out of his Mac". I'm sure he'll subscribe when he sees your lessons.
As many, I was looking for a 3rd part site to create my own QRCodes, until Gary shows me the Most of Mac. I found it really useful. Thank you for making me watch !
Creating the QR code with YOUR contact info, can be placed on ID tags on luggage and things like that. So cool. This alone is a great tip, but the video contains much much more. Thanks Gary.
Awesome-this is so useful! I’m a technical writer and one place I worked at we used a service to create QRCs with links to the user guides. Now I know I can use a Mac to do this. 😀 Also, I had no idea about the network shortcut. Every restaurant, bar, or coffee shop that offers free Wi-Fi should use this. This would be so much better than asking the waitstaff, who may have just started, for the network name and password. One time I asked for the network password at an Italian restaurant I like and my question got passed to just about the entire staff until it finally got to the bartender who knew it. 😂 It was pretty funny at the time but also I felt a bit bad since it took so many people to answer it. It would have been so much easier for them to show me a QRC.
Wow. It is actually there. This is really helpful for me. I never used a shortcut app. I think now I need to learn and use the shortcut app. Because there will be more things like this. Thank you. 😀😀
I'm curious: What's the purpose of bulk creating QR codes? If you have that many that they need to be done in bulk, then how can it be convenient to use QR codes at all? Do you just have a big wall of QR codes for people to point their phones at? Wouldn't it be better at some point to just have one QR code that points to a web page with a variety of links?
@@macmost I create some calendars, each month image refers to a webpage too. So I have 12 or 13 links that need a QR code. I tried Numbers and Calc but couldn't export them. So I was thinking about saving 12 URLS to a folder and then create QR PNG files.
@@etienne4403 Ah, 12. When I hear "bulk" I usually think hundreds or thousands. For just 12 you can just plug in the 12 urls one at a time and it will take less time than coming up with a custom version of the Shortcut. But if you really want to do it, you could create a List in Shortcuts from text with 12 lines with 12 URLs, and then have those saved out as named PNGs. Probably take me 15 minutes or an hour, but if you need to learn Shortcuts skills then it could be a day project. So probably best to just use the technique in this video 12 quick times.
@@macmost thanks Gary. Multiple calendars though, but not hundreds of links. Lists are interesting. Will take a look. Would you see a way to add a logo to a QR too via Shortcuts? I did see python script with a library doing that e.g.
@@etienne4403 You could do it, but it just involves more work. I don't know how proficient you are at programming, so it is hard to say whether it make sense to do so in a Shortcut or not.
Thanks again Gary. Is this feature of creating shortcuts available in all MacOS versions? I am on Ventura currently, the last that my inter Mac can operate on.
QR codes point to URLs (web pages). Is the PDF on a web page or does it have a web address? If so, create the QR code for that web address. If not, you need to upload the PDF to some site or service so it is available online. People need a public place on the web to get the PDF first.
Great video! Do you know of a way do the reverse? It's remarkable how many emails I get with QR codes in them (which shows a fundamental misunderstanding of their purpose) so I have to take a screenshot and then drag it in to a website that will tell me its URL. Is there a way to simplify this problem? Ideally, I would like to eyeball the URL with an option to have my browser go there.
Is there by chance any utility in the iPadOS or phone OS that does this? If not and you have to resort to an app to do it are there any that are considered stable and safe?
Thanks Sir for this. Question - If i create a QR code in my iphone, will my friends using ANDROID phones be able to use this ? Is this QR code only for apple users ?
QR codes are just another way to show a web address (URL). It doesn't matter what sort of device you have any more than that would with a text URL like "macmost.com."
I don't see anything that says Create QR code from the Gallery. I am using OS 12.6 Monterey. Is this shortcut only available on later OS versions? Also checked iPad and iPhone running iOS 18.1, nothing there that says QR Code?
You are several versions of macOS back. I don't know which version of macOS added this, but I guess it wasn't in Monterey. On iOS 18 it is there. Go to the Gallery and search for "QR Code."
@@macmost Nothing under my apps that says Gallery on my iPad using iOS 18.1 ? Also tried going to Shortcuts and only thing showing is iCloud Sync, Private Sharing, Advanced and Legal Notices. Nothing that says Gallery, or shows any shortcuts????

Does the Wi-Fi setup QR code open and display the password for the user to see, or will it just auto-connect? Edit: Never mind, I figured it out. Once created, the user doesn't see the WiFi password if you use your camera, but if you use a QR Code reader app, it will display the password. That's the part I don't feel comfortable with. Is there a way to prevent that from happening?
Why? Once they have the Wi-Fi password, they can see it in their Passwords app anyway? There's no way to give someone the password without them knowing the password. It isn't a secret at that point.
I consider myself a Mac Guru. You put me to shame. Thank you, Gary. So I have a question. Is there a template for having a small graphic in the middle, like a logo? Based on what I know about QR Codes, the info repeats as a redundancy. And I just trial and errored my way to adding a small graphic, but would rather have a template.
Not that I know of. Probably some floating around online. But it would be very easy to create in whatever app you use to edit graphics. Just make your own.
Those QR code companies could decide to start holding your link hostage until you start paying them a monthly fee. It's so frustrating to understand why people use those. You can self host your own tracking URLs.

This was gold. I was so annoyed using websites to do this, and it was on my MBP all the time! Thanks so much

You should be an Apple Fellow, Gary. Very educational video! Can a Windows computer do this without third party apps?
I think Microsoft Edge may have a function that does this on Windows.
