  • In this video I rank all of the Public Gold Fossicking/Panning/mining/prospecting area on the West Coast of New Zealand from Worst to Best, this will consist of ranking the following creeks: Claugheys Creek, Jones Creek, Lyell Creek, Moonlight Creek, Prices Creek, Shamrock creek, Slab Hutt Creek, Stony and Brtiannia Streams and Waiho River, I will rate them on 4 criteria and then determine the best and worst sites!
    Reamember these are all just my opinion and based off how we have done in these creeks, anyone list could be very diffrent depending on how well they have done in a creek :).
    Thanks for watching and I hope it helps you find some of that sweet gold !

    Ok so it has been a long time but it turns out our rating for Claugheys creek was a bit off the gold there is super concentrated but if you can find one of those deposists it is very good _
    New Ratings for it is Facilites the same, Accessibility the same, Untouched ground the same but the gold we are uping it to 12/20 rather then 5/20, as it seems like a 5/20 most of the surface and most of the creek but if you can find one of those deposists like in our huge gold strike at nelson creek video it can be quite rich. This gives it a total score of 25/40 which puts it on Par with Shamrock creek for 3rd best gold fossicking area beating out the other nelson creek area.

    Very well done video. I have been fossicking, panning, and sluicing in Shamrock Creek since 1966, and have studied goldfield history in depth. I was considering going to Jones Creek to pan, where the biggest nugget in NZ was found, but your info has changed my mind. Great work, please keep it up. I enjoy all your videos.

      That’s awesome bro you must be super experienced the history is amazing aye got a real feel to it, this video was a while back and I’ll be honest I would slightly adjust some of my rankings with a bit more experience, but yeah jones creek was absolute rubbish for us, wouldn’t be going back anytime soon. Thanks heaps and I hope you enjoy future videos as well :).

    I agree fully with your assessment of the gold at the public area at Ross. An utter waste of time and effort, but I would say that you'd be hard pressed to find a nicer place to just relax and chill out for a few days in mid Summer. If you've got a canoe with you you can happily paddle around on the lake across the road from the pub. It was once a huge open cast mine! And when I was there a couple of Summers ago the pub did an awesome buffet roast meal in the evenings. Not quite as good as finding a decent nugget, but getting up there.

      No defintley not the reason this list only ranks west coast sites is we are yet to go to every site in Otago and Nelson, but from the ones we have went to they are all actually pretty solid sites and have some solid gold . Glad you enjoyed the video :).

    Thank you for sharing, you rock...our initial experience suggests Slab hut creek Pickers are great! They were just teasing us...possibly a bit of silver or fools gold too? Not sure but we will be back, was great all round.

    • @TheSluicers
      @TheSluicers  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much bro! Slab Hutt has solid pickers all over the place aye! Has been hit hard but always good gold to be found and Is a great all rounder site. Possibly although Alluvial silver in the South Island is actually rarer then gold, fools gold could be confused but will normally pan off and is not as heavy, also only shines in some directions when gold shines in all. Thanks a lot :).

      @@TheSluicers - the DOC site was popular but wasn't as busy as we expected. It is great. Think we must have got a mix of gold and Iron Pyrites, as one side shone, the other didn't (although the latter didn't float) Steep learning curve, but enjoyed it...Best place to get some sucker bottles? Thanks again for sharing!! cheers Greg

    • @TheSluicers
      @TheSluicers  3 роки тому +1

      Prospecting is great to get out there have some fun and find some gold, sometimes you come up with no more then a couple specs other times you walk away with 1/2 a dozen grams it really depends on location and your luck. If I were you I would get out there and give it a shot (if you are able too) its not for everyone but its the type of thing you either love it or you hate it.

    What's your best day at Moonlight? Just a rough number not asking for exact weight 😄

    • @TheSluicers
      @TheSluicers  3 роки тому +1

      Best day at moonlight was around 3 grams, this was both of us digging, about 20 buckets. We were on this bend but the gold ran out pretty quickly as it was concentrated in this small area and is just disappeared either side of it. We have not been there since then though and should probably head back . Our other two trips there have been next to nothing though as you have seen by our moonlight creek prospecting video but we were pretty amaetur then and that could be expected.

    Questions, are there sand flies at the creeks

    • @TheSluicers
      @TheSluicers  2 роки тому +1

      It depends on the weather, time of year and site but most of them do have some sandflys here and there, Lyell and Moonlight probably being the worst for sandflys.

    • @TheSluicers
      @TheSluicers  Рік тому

      Waimangroa river? As far as I know that’s a private claim and not a fossicking area you can mine on “legally” sadly. Have heard of good gold come out of there back in the day though. Would love to try it up there, but obviously would never go on someone else’s claim.

    This is a good clip lads, and I commend you. But I’m not gonna lie, as a west coaster that used to be able to visit most of these sites without seeing another person, except the odd local, this kind of publicity is not helpful, and contributes to the destruction of the west coasts isolation and its value to the people that live there by choice. BUT at the same time I’m glad you’re out doing the same things that our forebears who built your cities and NZs wealth did. Good on ya lads, much respect :) Happy hunting :) Greg.
