- In order to determine which US states are the dumbest, we had to look at high school and college graduation rates for each state in America.

President Lincoln didn't go to high school
@@batiyah3166 He did, and he was a lawyer.
To be educated and to be intelligent are two different things!
Yeah
How would you know. The ‘yahoo’s’ in Mississippi are neither educated or intelligent.
I completely agree. People forget that common sense is a form of intelligence
Exactly!!
Yes, but, it's so rewarding to make that walk and feel that it's an accomplishment....even if it is just a community college. Most kids can do that much. If they really wanted to... Heck, I did it with two kids and two jobs. To see the look of pride in my kids eyes made it all worth it. And it did make it a tiny bit easier to get a job. A wee bit.
But you can't ever forget how proud you make your family. I'm an immigrant and my cousin later told me how my dad was over the moon, tears in his eyes, that at least one kid made it. He never told me.
Years later, I found out he finished paying my condo.
Totally unexpected. Wow but that made the other kids green eyed monsters. That's how I found out I had dumbasses for siblings....who knew????
You should have renamed it states with the worst education system.
He sounded like he ewes just being an asshole saying that they are dumb.
Pretty hard to keep a business rolling with no customers lol
Thought that make better sense
just because you don't have a high school diploma, doesn't mean you are stupid.
I have seen lots of "educated" people do some pretty STUPID shit.....
at least you did mention califonia....lol
you want to see the true meaning of stupid, go there for about 5 days.....you probably won't go back.
with all the homeless shitting in the streets and all....
All public schools in the big cities are horrible today.
A lot of kids I know in Texas aren’t going to college because they can’t afford and go into trades instead which, in my opinion, is a smarter option
yeah, that's what everyone says who can't pass a literacy test
It's better than becoming a criminal.
@@stephenryder1995 you earn bigger money with a trade and can retire earlier and move to a better 1st world country that has free health care if anything bad happens to you or your family. So there's that.

@Hawkeye Pierce you actually said California and smart in the same sentence, Congrats, YOUR dumb! P.S. Im an independent not a Republican and if you can't even recognize that all of the idiots (Pelosi, Newsome, etc) that are causing people to leave your state are idiots. I feel sorry for you. Slamming the GOP doesn't make you or California smarter, it just shows how deluded you are about how far into the crapper your state has gone and is continuing to go.
Because Everyone who voted for him is Too Ignorant to know better .
Death valley is in California not Nevaduh....it borders Nevada. I'm from Illinois and know this.

Your sarcastic commentary is too funny.
Education does not determine intelligence.

Oklahoma ain’t dumb. Look at are economy for being a middle of nowhere state that no one wants to come to. We make the most of being nowhere. Pretty smart if ya ask me.
It's plenty of dumbasses there though
I'm sixty-three years old and had older southern parents. My dad is from Mississippi and he told me about the dinner/supper difference in the south. I have issues with the south myself but let's not perpetuate stereotypes. Neither of my parents went to high school but reading was important. We passed books around. Bestsellers and classics. We are too divided in this country and we need to find common ground and become united again as in the United States.
Yup! We older folks know what the problem is Wendy
they perpetuate their own stereotypes by virtue of their lop-eared, toothless offspring

I have two degrees and the smartest person I ever knew was my father. He had a 10th grade education. He also built two of the tallest skyscrapers in our city. The smartest person he ever knew was his father who quit school in grade six. He also owned two patents, built virtually everything he owned by hand, and was the wealthiest farmer in his community. Education isn't the truest measure of intelligence.
exactly. Sure I’m in 4th grade, but all of pi I know is 3.141592653587979987566 (the last seven I think are maybe wrong.) Besides, this guy made multiple grammar mistakes. Maybe we should pick on him. Education isn’t intellingence.

The guy who made the video
I had a Grandfather who did not go to school past the third grade. No he wasn't too much tech savvy, but he could build ANYTHING. He also owned multiple successful businesses. Two of the businesses he founded were sold to people who had business degrees from major universities (which this guy seems to think is what makes someone "smart"). The businesses were very profitable when my grandfather sold them, but both were completely bankrupt within 3 years of being sold. My grandfather bought both back for pennies on the dollar, and had both back to were they were before they were sold. Guess those degrees weren't as grand as people think. Besides public schools in the United States of America have nothing to do with education. Public schools in this nation are more about teaching kids to be obedient and learning to conduct their days the way they will once joining the workforce.
right.
It's a different time now man.
Most primary schools are really naught but indoctrination centres! To brainwash their youth that Casino Corporate Capitalism is the answer to everything in life! This is why the arts in American schools and history (international) has been so rated at the bottom of the surveys! If one wants REAL education, GET OUT of Trumpland! Just one more thing, American so-called 'education' has evicted basic social studies and worse, basic social skills (look at the social isolationism in America and you shall see why). Pathetic!
Yes and without a formal education and a good one, you will be between a rock and a hard place. Competing for the diminishing number of jobs not requiring a college degree. AI and robotics are killing those jobs.
@KCWoolsey I have to disagree with you on that. Actually a lot of people don't pursue education because they are going to work to better themselves or their situation. Plus nothing in this video mentioned a single word about the people who went to a trade school or program.
I've been a university professor for over 30 years, I'm a retired reserve military officer, a speaker of several languages, I hold five college degrees, I'm internationally published and widely traveled. And I think this survey is the dumbest thing I've ever seen. The bias in favor of those who hold university degrees is especially laughable. Some of the least intelligent and most poorly educated people I have ever met are in universities, and the average college student today is barely literate.
Timothy Williams My observations as well sir! Have a happy new year!
@@stevefischer9336 I currently teach at a small Catholic university in Ohio. I taught previously at the University of Kansas, and at the Université de Bordeaux III (France). This video is the product of a smug little millennial who knows nothing of the world. He parrots the infantile prejudices of today's lazy college student. By the way, do you actually KNOW anything about the faculty at the University of Mississippi? I would advise you to check out their credentials, but I doubt you have the expertise to understand what you would discover.

Haha okay I try :)
I live in one of the highest (best) ranked states for education, and my dad didn't even make it through middle school.
I am a college graduate who values higher education as the road I chose to determine my career. However, college is not for everybody nor does everyone wants to go. Some of the smartest people in my life never went to college or finished high school. It is just a snobby way of calling people blue collar workers versus white collar. A person's worth, character or value is not measured by a degree. I know farmers with degrees. I know CEOs who never went to college. What a slap in the face to call the people of these states dumb because of the educational system. I think as a whole the US systems stinks regardless of where you live. We need to improve our public schools and make them safe for our children. College prep and vocational classes need to offered. Our students need choices to help them become well rounded adults. We need doctors, auto mechanics, teachers, and HVAC tech's, etc. Every job after high school does not need a college degree. Our children need better opportunities and choices to make it regardless of what path they choose.
The man who invented Hot cheetos is a multi-millionaire he dropped out of school when he was in 4th grade and later in life worked as a janitor for frito lay he had the idea of chili in cheetos he made a deal and now is a multi-millionaire who is so wise

Alabama was responsible for the rocket fuel that put man on the moon. Texas was ground control For these missions. Elen Degeneras came from Louisiana. Opra Winfrey was from Mississippi. The list goes on and on. We are not dumb in the southern states. We just know what is important. An IQ test doesn't really tell a persons intelligents. I know people with high degrees that can't pour piss out of a boot with the instructions on the bottom. I was working in California for a recovery service, man calls and said he is broke down on the side of the road. I got there, looked at the car and discovered it was out of gas. I put some gas in, followed him to a gas station. I had to show a Dr. How to fuel his brand new car. I didn't do it for him, I showed him how. I had to explain everything to this person. This made me laugh! What does this say about the American education system? I am American, and consider myself lucky to have been educated outside the United States. I've recently travelled, and driven through all of these mentioned states, and 14 more. I cannot believe that California and Florida did not make into the top 10 of this list. I met very many nice people on this trip. Twice this happened, once in Louisiana, and once in Alabama, that some some nice, friendly person spied my British Columbia licence plate, then assumed I was from Colombia. While at a fast food restaurant in Arizona, when I saw that the change I was about to receive was 24 cents, I gave the young man at the till a penny. This greatly confused him. He took the penny, then handed me 2 dimes, and 4 pennies. I then politely explained to him, that the reason I had given him a penny was because, I wanted a quarter, and gave him back the 24 cents. Now this really confused him even more, but slowly he did the math, 24 + 1 = 25. After a few moments I got my quarter, for which I thanked him.
I want to know where you got your statistics.

New Mexico actually has two DOE National Labs: Sandia National Lab and Los Alamos National Lab. Oh.. and this is something you did not mention at all. Huntsville, Alabama is home to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, which was one of the first NASA facilities ever built. Wernher von Braun, the chief engineer of the Saturn V rocket, worked there. In addition to NASA, Huntsville also hosts the Redstone Arsenal, which is a major research and development site for the Army. The Arsenal also hosts various other DoD components, such as the Missile Defense Agency. It also hosts the new FBI campus. Naturally, many large defense contractors have a presence in Huntsville, such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, etc.
Needless to say, Huntsville is a hub for some of the best and brightest in the United States. The fact that you didn’t mention it means that you did not do adequate research… You chose to focus almost solely on education statistics. L video.

This guy simply called out conservative and sounthern states.
Peace Potentate thing is, he’s not wrong, and it also might be coincidence that the smartest states tend to be left leaning, not trying to be partisan but I’m just sayint
Well not all the states on here are conservative:
New Mexico
Nevada...
But I knew what to expect. He's pretty liberal leaning...
@Austin Statin ~ I realize that. But since it usually goes to a democrat, I disagree with it...
@Austin Statin ~ Well if you think about it, almost all these liberal states started out conservative. It's only been since the drug culture of the 1960's that everything started to change. But in the last 25 years, it's become catastrophic...
@Austin Statin ~ My point is, liberals have changed those states, and that's why they are no longer conservative. And Texas is still a conservative state, thus far.
Your the one who brought up that Nevada was once conservative. I'm just saying the reason why it isn't now...
I never graduated from high school. However...
1. I went to high school in Mississippi and had some really great teachers. Provine High School in Jackson Mississippi, which I attended, had one of the highest average SAT scores in the country! I also went to school in Ohio, Arizona and California. From my personal observation, California not only had the dumbest teachers, but the lowest form of education. Where I was doing algebra in the 5th grade in Ohio with fantastic teachers, the kids in California were still adding rows of two-digit numbers in the 8th grade.
2. I have 18 patents and ran my own high tech engineering firm for 38 years before retiring a multi-millionaire at 71 years old. The only reason I didn't retire earlier was because I loved what I did. I also married a fantastic wife that also hated school who invested our money very wisely.
3. I was tested three different times to have a genius IQ. So, rating a state by the number of people that graduated, or went to college may not provide worthwhile, useful data on any "dumbness" scale. There are many youths that have brilliant minds who's teachers either bored them or they dwarfed them with their grasp on life.
4. I'm an author with 5 books on Amazon and other venues. I also write my own patents and patents for other people.
And 5, but not least! Because some people were not born as fortunate to have a certain mental capacity, does not diminish their value on the planet. I believe that one must evaluate people on some scale from intelligent to dumb based on intent from benevolent to malicious, nice to not so nice. Yes, I've had some of the nicest people working for me that could hardly spell their name and fired some of the orneriest smart people that I could have made a lot of money from.
How about doing a video on the states that have the greatest number of issued patents, or the largest number of highly successful entrepreneurs - where they grew up and went to school? Maybe a mathematical ratio of dropouts from high school or college to the number of high school or college graduates by actual income when they reached their 30's or older?
I know many college graduates, some with Phd's that haven't amounted to much more than an average income and a bitter existence, blaming everything wrong about their lives except themselves.
Isn't income and happiness a better gauge by which success (maybe even dumb-assness) is measured anyway?
& clearly you weren’t taught the meaning behind keeping something short & sweet!
Mississippi produced the greatest American novelist of all time. He won the Nobel Lit Prize when he was merely 52 years old. He dropped out of college after his freshman year. His name was William Faulkner, and his fiction is often a dystopian nightmare.

What about Maryland, new York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts???
Not on the list, cornpone.
because they're in the Northeast, where this Yank probably lives!
Oh Nick! You lighten the load and make me laugh. Not easy to do these days. Thanks.
I’m surprised Florida didn’t make the list.
Florida school system is really good. There are areas that are bad just like any other state, but overall they have a good education system. Florida is 3rd when it comes to students scoring high on AP (Advanced Placement) tests. Massachusetts was first, Connecticut was 2nd, Florida was 3rd.
It's just the memes 😭
same
I worked in construction in Florida for 3 years and if my workers are reflective of Florida, they were interested in two things dope and the beach.
I just moved to West Virginia not too long ago and it's pretty awesome with really nice people. Banjo and everything. I grew up in the city, where they have some pretty nasty attitudes. The country hospitality and kind community took some adapting to for a city kid like myself.
I love your commentary😂 just watched all your videos
Yay! All 187 of them?
You can't afford to be dumb in California you need $100,000 / year to survive.
i know it.
Very unfair. How can I be a dropout when I was never accepted to high school. Very, Very unfair. Before you can be called a drop out one has to drop in. Why don't you give me a chance?
Then you're not a dropout Ken you're better than that!!

But we are a developed country. That’s not very good compared to most other countries in the top 20 that are actively advancing on the technological aspect at a faster pace compared to us.

Let's judge! Oh, I never tire of bad news! As I sit here in FLorida, I'm a little surprised that we didn't get on this list, and it's not for lack of trying. I once saw a national ranking for "Science and Engineering", where FL was second or third from last. I guessed Mississippi was going to "win", but I thought for sure we'd be in there SOMEWHERE. Ah, I work in Engineering Education, and I have to say it makes for a long day sometimes. It's surprising how many semi-literate people there are in COLLEGE! When I was a kid we all thought that America had something like full literacy, now I think we admit that it's more like half the population! Man, I wonder what it's LIKE in (say) Arkansas.
I know it's gone downhill so much

The Wizard of Oz to the scarecrow: I can't give you a brain, but I can give you a diploma.
Autodidact. Look it up.
The top 20 smartest countries are literally based on each country's quality/style of education; the Asian countries are up there because their education systems focus heavily on examinations (and I am assuming that quantifying how 'smart' people are require something similar and their exam skills are transferable). And of course, Finland in my opinion just has the best public education system. But overall, my point is that it doesn't tell you how inherently 'smart' someone is, just like the intelligence of a person cannot be measured by a college degree.
In Sweden you have 3 attempts to pass a module per semester so that’s like 7 attempts in Ireland if you fail once you’ve to repeat in the Autumn or fall as people say in America lol 😂
As for the report card thing it can't be completely accurate because every state has a different curriculum. So passing a class in one state may be harder than in the other regardless of who the person is. For example my friend moved from Pennsylvania to Florida and she says the classes are much easier there.
Louisiana did produce the Higgins Bottom Boats for DDay.
Hi Nick and Mappy. Although I really enjoy your videos I offer a caveat. I wouldn’t use lack of college degrees as a indicator of stupidity. For instance my son didn’t go to college but went into HVAC instead. So he immediately got a job which is something some to many college grads couldn’t achieve. He’s extremely smart and skilled in so many handiwork areas. Plus I’ve met quite a few college grads who are idiots
lisa you are RIGHT. ive thought about that since I made this video and i totally agree with you :)

Tennessee was wild. I don’t know how my family ended up there. They were incredibly successful and we lived way out in the woods with some of craziest people. In high school there were a lot of people who went on to do great but my by the time my class graduated we lost like 20% of the class

Warm climates historically tend to harbor lower intelligence. Longer growing season = less planning ahead.

OKIE from Skokie.
The proper modifier for "people" is "fewer," not "less." Because people are COUNTED, not weighed.
I grew up in TN, dropped out of high school in 9th grade, got my GED never went to college. I dropped out because I had to go work to help feed my 4 siblings so the didn’t starve. Once 18 I got an entry level bank teller job and worked my way up. When I turned 21 I moved into the investment side of the bank and by 22 I was making 6 figures.
I retired at 35 from the same company I started with when I was 18. I’ll be 40 this year, I own a 200 acre farm and a vacation home, I have 4 cars, 2 trucks, 2 tractors, 1 boats, 2 side by sides and 2 4 wheelers. All owned free and clear, no debt of any kind. I have 25 rental properties in 3 states for residual income plus I retail trade when I’m bored. I like the statistical part of the video but one’s intelligence isn’t based off graduation or a degree. An IQ test would be a more appropriate way to determine intelligence. Right?
Smart people don't bury themselves in student loans and then find out that they can't even get a job.
