I liked the first Resident Evil movie because they didn't try and copy the games and it was a slow paced zombie horror. Now they're full on action and are incorporating all sorts of characters from the games.
I always get the feeling that people who played the games mostly hate this movie... and people who went watching it on it´s own... mostly think it is pretty good. No masterpiece but still good on its own.

I've never played the games, but from what I know, most, if not all have to do with Silent Hill being connected to another dimension. So ... Is it possible that the movies tale place in a different dimension than the games do? If that's the case, does that maybe mean that the dimension where all the monsters are at is a big link to all the others? Think of it like a tree. The monster filled version is in the middle, and branches off into two more dimentions which would be the game's dimention and the movie's dimention. Or maybe it would more so be a triangle since there are characters from the games in ... was it the second movie?
i admit i saw the movie first way back in 2006, then again in 2009 then 2014, got the movie 2015 and now i have the first game on ps1 wasn't cheap but totally worth it. anyway in my opinion it was great the movie was great, sure it was a little bit loose to the game , but the atmosphere monsters and characters were magnificent. and you are the first reviewer i've come across who also likes the movie. you gave a great review, i'm liking and subscribing.
The movie turns 15 today! My first introduction to Radha Mitchell, Laurie Holden, Alice Kriege, and Jodelle Ferland. Truly one of my favorite video game adaptations despite so many changes they made. The visuals are absolutely amazing nailing down the atmosphere of the haunted town, they get the camera angles, the gore is plentiful. They used a lot of the music from the games by Akira Yamouka. Director Christopher Gans manages to bring the style and appearance to life. Plus there is the feeling of isolation and dread. Although it does suffer from inane dialogue, silly plotting, and the essence of the source material is somewhat lost in the shuffle. Sean Bean's scenes are so jarring and slow things down they could've been cut out completely. At its core though it is a story about maternal love and adoption trauma. The movie cremates the conventional adoption narrative in cinema, drawing the nightmarescape of not only forming a bond with an adopted child, but sustaining it, and what that attempt to sustain it says about the adoptive parent. Mother is god in the eyes of a child but adoptees know religion is an opiate or a way to treat emotional pain.

Great review. This is one of my favorite horror movies.I agree this is the best horror movie based FROM a video game. The music is so damn good. The story is great, yeah the end is confusing , did they die, or are they in a different realm etc. We are not to sure, that's for our imagination to figure out. If you played the games your left with the same reaction of hopelessness and confusion. That's what silent hill is all about . The second silent hill movie was horrible. I was so upset after watching it in theatres. But honestly it was no surprise to me.
Interesting fact: There was a coal mine fire in New Castle, Co back in the 1890's, caused by explosions in a mine. To this day the mine fire is still burning. The mountain where the coal mine is located was named Burning Mountain.
I said at the time of its release that it was a visual masterpiece. Totally underrated film. Has great horror atmosphere and visuals with a good story if you take the time to think about it. Acting was hit or miss but overall got the job done.

While I went with (and loved, BTW) your advice on watching Wing Commander...I'll pass on this one. Don't need the nightmares it would surely bring. And, Silent Hill has always been aboout atmosphere. As one game has it, there's this hallway you go down for...5 minutes??? Nothing happens. The tension, alone, is killer after reaching it.
My sister thought I was crazy watching this movie, because she was legitemetlly scared by this movie few years ago! Of course when I watched this Silent Hill movie, I didn't find it as scary as the original Silent Hill games, but the movie was really descent and it was propablly the only the best movie based on a video game, a horror game even I have ever seen! It really did pretty well with Silent Hills town, other world, crazy people (even tho it could have been creepier, if there were only few crazy people from the town in this movie, because Silent Hill is basiclly a haunted, hellish ghost town) and also the creatures, Phyramid Head really felt legitemetlly scary, same thing goes for the nurses, but one question remains, why there were beetles with Phyramid Head? I didn't remeber Phyramid Head having beetles as pets! :D But that's a minor nitpick! I think this movie was pretty great and more people should give this movie a chance! :)

They took a lot of liberties with the story. For example in the game Dahlia was the one who burned Alessa in order to implant the seed of a demonic god the town worshipped in Alessa's womb but the ritual backfired. That was kind of the long and short of it. Still a very fair score as it's still a fantastic movie.
Actually Alessa represents a unholy trinity, Alessa, the mother, Sharon, the daughter, and dark Alessa the unholy ghost, 3 beings that is the same person, Other than that, good review.

I think I like it so much because I don't consider the movie and the first Silent Hill game direct companions. If Revelations was never made, it would make sense that the movie threw in aspects from different Silent Hill games (most notably Pyramid Head) as that movie would represent all of Silent Hill itself instead of just the one game. Alas, Revelations was made and was obviously based on the third Silent Hill, confirming that the first movie was based on the first game alone. Although I really liked this movie, I have different opinions on Revelations. They completely butchered Vincent's character for the sake of a romance, and that sucks. Romance just doesn't work for Silent Hill.
And here I was afraid you'd hate this one. Hardly call it a perfect 10, but it IS the best game-movie. The reason I gushed over the film was because it captured the atmosphere which you pointed out, so I didn't mind the changes to the story. Thus, I strongly urge you to play at least the original sometime, for it's simply one of the most profound PS1 games I experienced. Oh, and wasn't Alice Krige (the Borg Queen) perfectly cast?

It's an odd duck. While it is an enjoyable movie, the fact that there are monsters from Silent Hill 2 featured prominently is a bit weird, because they don't really play off of Rose's fears the same way that an over-sexified nurse would play off of James Sunderland. The monsters in Silent Hill 1 played off of Cheryl's fears, so the movie comes off as fan service. Still a fun watch though. Kept me on my seat.
So, she's not dead, but instead she's in another universe. That's why she couldn't see her husband, but he can't sense her. I want to watch the sequel, but will she be set free ?

Thats why at the end when they get back to the house, the house is all smoky to Rose and Sharron, but its clear to the dad. However, in a recent silent hill movie called "silent hill origins", i think, the dad finds Sharron sleeping in the house, but not Rose. so Sharron and Rose died but Sharron pretty much came back to life

They call it "purgatory" since it is were their since are cleansed. This kind of concept was introduced in Silent Hill 2(Game). James searches for his supposed to be dead wife in Silent Hill. Before the death of his Wife, Silent hill was a tourist attraction. They see Silent Hill as a hellish environment because of the sins they committed and their fears/emotions manifest in the town.
Jose Jacinto i see your point , but there's one thing. if silent hill has your fears and emotions manifested in the town, why was the theme fire? i dont recall sharron or rose having any traumatic fire happen in their past, so shouldnt their own purgatory be more related to their own sins instead of the sins of the people who lived in the town and the events that happened there?
that is really only in the second game. and the first and third were about a cult within the towns' past. well... the first had a bunch of stuff besides just the cult.
my guess is that the cop and the mother and daughter all died in their crashes, and woke up in silent hill trapped, doesn't explain why the cop dies a second time, so maybe they are just trapped in another dimension idk.
I love horror films but horror games.. not so much. I actually watched the movie first and when I found out it was actually based on a game series, I tried it. I shat my pants several times. Yay me.
NecroVMX (Don't read this if you've yet to see the film and this will contain spoilers) I understood the story and yes as you say there are two silent hills however in the scene in the church towards the end you can see that the light changes and nearly everyone and everything disappears with it. The ashy atmosphere is still there afterwards but they are able to leave silent hill and go home. When they get home the audience sees that the whole family there but the mother and daughter cannot see the father/husband and vice versa. Does this mean that the mother and daughter are between universes and are limited to what they can see? I've not seen revelations (I plan to) and I haven't played any of the games so don't know if anyone has any other theories.
Movie was just ok...some things were pretty well presented... But the main reason people don't like it, is that the writing was quite bad. Adding the "Salem" witch like story is just uninspired. The exposition in the third act literally spoon feeds a backstory with narration lazy and it killed the atmosphere. Anybody who liked the game was especially harsh on it.
I had to stop this review at 3:00 because I had a feeling that you were going to tell the whole plot of the film. Which is obviously the worst thing you can do if you're reviewing a film.
Silent Hill fans don't like this movie because its not EXACTLY the same as the game lol which would be very boring I think because you would know everything that's gona happen. I'm a big fan of the Silent Hill games but I also really like this film the set pieces and atmosphere where done perfectly

Given that you liked the movie so much, you owe it to yourself to sit down and play the games. Good stuff. At least the first 3, the 'core' games I call them. I wouldn't bother with the new HD collection though. Stick with the originals for the sake of authenticity, and easier on the wallet.
Ok man saying that SH game is standard survival means u never played it. SH 1-2 have the plot so awesome that is melting minds:-) but if u see only target and how to kill it well yeah it is very standard.

why do sequals suck. this movie was great yet its second film was nothing but a steaming puddle of period blood.

Good horror film & easily the best video game to movie I've ever seen.
I love horror films but horror games.. not so much. I actually watched the movie first and when I found out it was actually based on a game series, I tried it. I shat my pants several times. Yay me.

NecroVMX (Don't read this if you've yet to see the film and this will contain spoilers) I understood the story and yes as you say there are two silent hills however in the scene in the church towards the end you can see that the light changes and nearly everyone and everything disappears with it. The ashy atmosphere is still there afterwards but they are able to leave silent hill and go home. When they get home the audience sees that the whole family there but the mother and daughter cannot see the father/husband and vice versa. Does this mean that the mother and daughter are between universes and are limited to what they can see?
I've not seen revelations (I plan to) and I haven't played any of the games so don't know if anyone has any other theories.
I thought that both the games and movies were good but not scary in one bit or creepy
Movie was just ok...some things were pretty well presented... But the main reason people don't like it, is that the writing was quite bad. Adding the "Salem" witch like story is just uninspired. The exposition in the third act literally spoon feeds a backstory with narration lazy and it killed the atmosphere. Anybody who liked the game was especially harsh on it.
Wait silent hill is a real physical place, those fucking bastards, that takes the whole idea of the original and tears it to shreds
I had to stop this review at 3:00 because I had a feeling that you were going to tell the whole plot of the film. Which is obviously the worst thing you can do if you're reviewing a film.
Since it doesn't matter at all in respect to this movie (and somewhat to the game,) it's irrelevant. They just stuck him in here for fan service.

Silent Hill fans don't like this movie because its not EXACTLY the same as the game lol which would be very boring I think because you would know everything that's gona happen. I'm a big fan of the Silent Hill games but I also really like this film the set pieces and atmosphere where done perfectly

Given that you liked the movie so much, you owe it to yourself to sit down and play the games. Good stuff. At least the first 3, the 'core' games I call them. I wouldn't bother with the new HD collection though. Stick with the originals for the sake of authenticity, and easier on the wallet.
Spoilers ruin a movie for me. I want the story start to finish with visual context, not in jumbled pieces.

Ok man saying that SH game is standard survival means u never played it. SH 1-2 have the plot so awesome that is melting minds:-) but if u see only target and how to kill it well yeah it is very standard.
