  • The Packers were a powerhouse in the 1960s. For the second time in a row they beat the Dallas Cowboys in the championship game and marched their way to the Second NFL-AFL Championship game, except this was the first time we saw the name turn to "Super Bowl".
    This game is a brodcast audio merge that I do not own at all. For the longest time I wanted to see this super bowl in full but I couldn't. Well it has seen the light of day again for education and history.

      The technology from the first two SBS was primitive - from the ridiculous mascots before during halftime of those games.They did therefore the best they could to record this game-combining radio and film footage of this game which made this video somewhat confusing and threw off play -by-play.

      @Stacie45 Рік тому +11

      The first few Super Bowls were recorded on Quadruplex video tape, which was very expensive, a couple thousand dollars per roll at the time. Consequently it was standard practice to erase it and reuse it. There are now fairly complete reconstructions of SB1 and SB4, and the original broadcast of SB3 has been preserved. I think this one is the only one really lost to history, and this radio-TV merge is the best reconstruction I have seen.

      @@kevinjohnson4599 I agree with you. It’s all Spread now from the gun. Boring as heck to watch. It’s like a silent movie watching the Line play. Too finesse for me. These teams back in the day were basically running a Multiple Wing set. They just moved the Wing out wide as a Flanker, then they threw out of a lot. I seek out the high school teams these days who keep QB under Center and run a Power run style mostly. They’ll mix it up from the Gun as needed, but their mission is to pound the rock. I love watching that style.

    My brother and I would get so inspired watching NFL games that we'd suit up in our football gear and helmets and go play some rough-assed sandlot football with the neighborhood kids.
    Did just that January 14th, 1968 while watching this Super Bowl.
    It actually snowed in Atlanta, Ga. that day, so we had our own, "Ice Bowl," going on, lol.
    Got scatched up, bruised, icy-wet and muddy. Was SO much damned fun. The Raiders had won eight, or nine, straight games. You'd think they'd do better than they did that day. It came apart for them in the 2nd half.

    I think I remember hearing on a TV special years ago that Vince Lombardi didn't have much regard for both opponents (Chiefs & Raiders) in the first two NFL-AFL Championship Games (later known as Super Bowls I & II) because he felt that the upstart, newer AFL was an inferior league to the older NFL due to the lack of talent, experience and sofisication that they had. He considered the NFL-AFL Championship Game a formality that delayed the recognition of his Packers as world champs, but he played both games nonetheless out of respect for the Chiefs' & the Raiders' organizations & the AFL as a whole .

      NFL Films was predisposed with filming the games in slow-mo to set it apart from regular speed filmings and video tapes of that era. With adding a narration script, voice-over talent, and incidental music added to the slow-mo film, it heightened the spectacle of the game on the field-of-play.
      You do realize that you can speed up UA-cam by going into the Settings, which allows viewers to bump up the video playback speed.

    I like to watch the halftime shows from the early Super Bowls. Most of them are on UA-cam, but the Super Bowl II halftime show is one of the missing links. Since the game itself had to be reconstructed, this one may well be the "Holy Grail" of Super Bowl halftime shows.

    This was the first Super Bowl I saw. I was soon to be 8 years old. The only thing I remember is that Green Bay dominated and Oakland was badly outplayed. For reasons I don't remember, I missed Super Bowl III but I did see Super Bowl IV. Of the first four Super Bowls, I saw the two that were the least important.

      Packers flooded the zone to the right - FB Ben Wilson ran a swing route covered by the left linebacker, HB Travis Williams ran a square-out downfield. The Raiders must have feared Williams' blazing speed, since after CB Kent McCloughan tried to jam Dowler he went toward the sideline to help Howie Williams cover Travis. That coverage mistake led to MLB Dan Connors frantically chasing after Dowler.

    Vince Lombardi's last personal triumph. The Packers struggled a little more than they did in '66 as age was catching up with them. The Raiders learned many lessons and would not be beaten this lopsided in the playoffs again. They played a good first half and it didn't initially look like the score would be such a big spread in the end.

    Today, unlike in the early years of the Super Bowl, local radio flagship stations can do their own broadcasts of the Super Bowl.
    But these broadcasts can't be fed to the regional radio networks that normally carry that team's games; they must take the network feed.
    And the flagship station, although able to do their own broadcast, must take the network (Westwood One) commercials.
    I believe the same situation exists with radio broadcasts of the World Series, Stanley Cup Finals, and NBA Finals (I know ESPN Radio carries the national radio broadcasts of the World Series and NBA Finals; I believe ESPN Radio will also carry the Stanley Cup Finals starting in 2022).

    will always believe the Raiders should have been in SB III and SB IV--in 1968 although they had a 12-2 record they had to go the New York to play the Jets--although they had a better record (Jets were 11-3) and Oakland had beaten them at home in the infamous "Heidi" game--the AFL playoff system alternated between East and West and it just happened to be in the East that year-so the Jets got the game--then in the AFL championship game they were driving for the winning score when Raider QB Daryle Lamonica inadvertantly threw a lateral that was recovered by the Jets--then in 1969 the Raiders hosted the KC Chiefs in the AFL championship and ended up losing after a very controversial call on a pass from KC QB Len Dawson to WR Otis Taylor that looked out of bounds--but with no challenge flags etc the call stood

    • @retrobrahhh
      @retrobrahhh 3 роки тому +2

      Yeah that backwards pass by Lamonica was crazy. And on the previous drive they went for it on 4th down instead of kicking a field goal to make it closer 27-26. The Chiefs game in 1969 was even worse because the Raiders had several chances to break the 7-7 tie but missed two field goals and a big interception in the end zone. Then Lamonica came back in and threw three more picks in the red zone. In 1970 against Baltimore the Raiders had many chances as well. Atkinson fumbled a punt, and the Raiders gave up a big TD on 3rd and long to make it 27-17. Frustrating but classic games.

    • @robertsprouse9282
      @robertsprouse9282 Рік тому

      The Raiders hit OTIS TAYLOR on the helmet with the def. back's back turned away from the ball when the latter made contact, and that happened a split second before the ball arrived. It should've been def. interference even if TAYLOR was out of bounds after that contact, and one of the reasons he was out of bounds- it looked like he was barely out, and not easily in bounds- was that Taylor's body weight when he was hit on the helmet.. was pushed toward the sideline.
      Look at the replay..its obvious.
      Quit whining..you lost by 10 pts at home.
