I do unfortunately feel like orange piccolo couldn't happen without all his character development and his fusion with Kami making him the father of earth's Shenron. It was basically shenron returning his power to the fused namekian.
What I think is interesting about this what if is that even when piccolo is the main character, he’s sidelined at the same time and gohan becomes the main character. Piccolo is always the strongest one there and gohan is still focused on heavily haha
