I have a distinct childhood memory of reading a school book in class in grade school. There was a picture of a person pushing their hands up against a brick wall. It was talking about "what is work?" and showed that no matter how much effort you put into pushing against the brick wall, if it's not moving, you're not doing any work. Effort and work are two different concepts. Work and effort do not always correlate.
