On the Ghana-Nigeria issue,my simple advice to my fellow Nigerians is to abide by the laws of any nation you find yourself. Most times,we disregard laws and ultimately ends up getting us profiled. If these guys protesting talked to Nigerian Police same way they did to the Ghanaian ones, they would've ended up in a hospital..I must commend the Ghanaian police for their professionalism. RESPECT would help us Nigerians in lot of ways. Come to Douala, same thing, smh I won't be surprised if Cameroon should go the same route anytime soon..

Bravo Oke,,, Realy some Nigerians are very truthful, When others are so pompous bragging as if all is well for Nigeria the well honest ones face the problem very truthfuly pointing out the problem of Nigerians for them to change! The fact that we have ECOWAS doesnt make Nigeria Ghana and Ghana Nigeria, each country have it laws which need to be respected! Its disgust to see a Nigerian talking to a Ghanaian police or immigration officer, action he can not try with a Nigerian police in Nigeria is what he will do to a Ghanaian officer in Ghana, If a country is not good for you just leave and stop complaining, but if its good for you just obey their laws and you will be welcome there,, Ghana is not collecting $1m from Nigerians, but all foreigners must have $1m deposit before they can do retailing bussiness, the money still remans their own

The day we denounce the form of ‘spiritual worship’ that is being perpetrated in Nigeria and most African countries is the day that we will make our first step towards economic emancipation and self growth . A non-Ghanaian cannot do retailing in Ghanaian markets, period. The $1m is what is called the business' PAID UP CAPITAL'. That money will still be in the business' bank account and it shall still belong to the business. These are laws meant for all foreign nationals in Ghana.Nigeria cries African unity/regional integration when it suites them.Ghanaian poultry farmers cannot access the Nigerian market due to the impediments put in their way by some laws/tariffs in Nigeria.Remember when the Nigerian borders were shut to traders from Ghana,Benin and Togo? I don't get it!!! Those traders should simply abide by the Ghanaian laws and everything would be fine or they could become Ghanaian citizens too and that $1m requirement would no longer apply.

    1. the Nigerian government has banned almost 50 products of Ghana made goods that Ghanaians can't export to Nigeria to retail, 2. Upon investigation by a Ghana media in Nigerian markets in Nigeria when Nigeria closed it's borders last year, the market people said they don't rent out their shops to foreigners rather bring your goods on wholesale to them to retail in their own markets. And their officials are very good at defending Nigerians on their media platforms. Both sides aren't doing things right. Don't blame Ghana in public because y'all know exactly what you are doing. I have watched a lot of their officials on their media platforms with egoistically defending why they have banned exports from Ghana, close their borders unannounced to the detriment of Ghanaian businesses partly because they suspect the Nigerians are bringing Pona yam to Ghana to export to abroad meanwhile everyone knows Pona yams are produced only in Ghana. I understand they are protecting their economy and also the way they brag about how they are the big fishes. They should also understand that the small fishes ought to eat too. It can't always be about them. Those cheap and fake goods Nigerians sell in Ghana are exported from China, Dubai, India, UK and Europe but Nigeria don't want other countries to bring their goods to Nigeria. And that's selfishness and bully to all ecowas members.
    Evidence:

But our neigbours kept companing they were disutrbing them... one said she was tired of sweeping pine needles every morning, the other kept complaing about the tree inhabitiing spirits amd snakes(a mango tree that they used to eat the fruits too). It was a crazy time... my father had pay someone to cut them down... my point we fear spirit than our pysical enviroments.... It was difficult playing outside after that... this year has been dry too in most parts of Nigeria.

How can we expect any changes in Nigeria when the country is being ruled by the same set of people since independence. Even the churches are in government and still we are going from bad to worse. Prayers has obviously failed so let's try action. No one in government now really have the interest of the masses at heart, except maybe a couple of governors. We cannot expect God to do for us what He has given us the knowledge to do for ourselves.

Do they really think if ppl have 1M 💵, they will really come and trade in their country, and how many Ghanaian traders in the same market has 1M 💵? Funny part was that they have market union, they didn’t make this rule but seems like their president is making it seems like he protecting his ashanti ppl’s interest only, and it further worsen it, any business the Ghanaian shows interest in, no Nigerians are allowed to do such business and they have to employ certain percent of their citizens first, or no businesses. It’s heartbroken though, but look at how our leaders treat their own citizens, so the outsiders will treat them worse

@@MrFastfash I think you guys are getting it wrong here. Nigeria and Ghana have long standing relationship. We all know this. In Ghana the constitution prohibits foreigners from operating in the retail business. However foreigners are allowed to trade as wholesalers. Most countries have such laws to protect local small businesses. The truth is there are so many foreigners engaged in the retail business. This is the cause of the problem. Until the right thing is done we will also talk about this. Nigerians are not the target but it also true that most Nigerians in Ghana are engaged in retail business especially when it comes to spare-parts

I want to throw some light on the Ghana-Nigeria story. There is a law to protect local retailers and that is why government rolled that policy (1million dollar minimum investment). It affects all foreigners not only Nigerians except that Nigerians seem to be the majority in foreigner retail trade. Chinese retail businesses have also been affected. On the high commission demolition, I first of all want to say that Ghana never demolished the building of the commission. It is a group of people who are also claiming ownership of the land. Secondly, the lands in Accra and in most parts of the country are vested in stools, families and not in the government. So on many occasions there are disputes in the sale of the land unless they are properly registered in the name of the buyer at the Lands Commission. In this case no one can successfully challenge you on the ownership of the land. Your foreign minister alluded to the fact that proper documentation has not been done on the land. Why will a high commission start building on a land it hasn't registered. While I totally fault the people who demolished the property, part of the blame goes to your high commission. The lands in Accra belongs to the Ga people and some are crying foul that their lands have been forcibly taken. So why didn't your commission register the land. This said, I think Ghana and Nigeria have a lot of things in common and we should learn to settle our differences without violence or hate.

Adeola, the truth is Ghana can see that the Nigerian government and average businessman doesn't and cannot appreciate the value of fairness or equitable participation of natives in their own country. You continue to argue, it seems to Ghanaians, that the business environment should never have any competition laws that favor one person or the other so both can survive - in this case a smaller population of 30 million trading space against a 200 million one with over 5 million of them already involved in street side trading and more coming daily into the marketspace. Yet, at the same time, this same larger people have a government that has closed its land borders since last August for one year now to the rest of West Africa citing 'too much smuggling of rice, etc' into its shores by the small countries around it. It's like Nigerians only understand protectionism and fairness when it its for them and their assets only.
Nigerians have been allowed to invest and compete in banking, telecoms and other major industries in this small country because Nigerians see it as profitable to them and gain great foreign exchange in revenues and profit more than they do back home because of the relative stronger currency rates but cannot seem to appreciate that in a relatively smaller country/market it would make sense to leave some of the the small industries (streetside/marketplace trading) to the locals who are also poor citizens so they too can survive and you have a peaceful country to come to still in the future. This makes the average Ghanaian feel that you don't respect them nor want equitable participation in the region.

I wholeheartedly agree with you and I’m Nigerian. Countries all over the world ensure that their citizens are not negatively affected by the business activities of foreigners. In Canada, specifically British Columbia, the province had to impose a foreign tax on house purchases because the Chinese were buying up real estate like crazy, which caused housing prices to skyrocket, squeezing out the middle class Canadian citizens from buying property. Nigeria closing its borders was to protect the country and Nigerians supported it. A country should do whatever necessary to protect its citizens. But it does seem like Nigerians are being targeted, which I don’t think is fair at all. Ghana should do better in that regard.

If they find it difficult to meet these requirements as sole proprietors, they should then pull their resources together and form Joint Ventures, Partnerships or Companies.
Where they think there is any infringement or anything inimical to any of the ECOWAS protocols on trade or to any bilateral trade agreement, they should just alert their government to seek redress at the diplomatic level.
