    Hey all! Thanks for the heads-up, apparently Humble Bundle is doing a Corel bundle that includes Corel Painter 2021, alongside Paintshop Pro, AfterShot Pro, ParticleShop, and various papers and brushes, for $30! For that price, I think Corel Painter is DEFINITELY worthwhile, not to mention the other softwares you get as well!
    Here's the link, there's 28 days left as of October 15, 2021! - www.humblebundle.com/software/create-with-visual-impact-software?partner=kamidahobo
    Head on over and check it out if you're in the market for a new painting software plus some extra goodies!

    Speaking of realistic painting, you should check out the RGBA brushes that Krita includes in its latest version. And I think the team is planning to add more in Krita 5 when it launches so I feel that is going to make Corel Painter's value even less attractive.

    I happily get by with Rebelle 4 and Clip Studio Paint. Used to be a huge fan of corel painter, but other programs have far surpassed many aspects of painter. Such as Rebelle's real media and paper tools. Clip Studio in so many other ways. Both far far far cheaper than painter.
    I got really into corel painter when Adobe switched to the subscription only model. I hate that model, so I learned all the other programs out there. I really came to enjoy painter, to the point I would still use it over photoshop today if I only had those two. But ultimately, clip studio paint became my main tool (on all devices). It has a LOT of the functionality I used in photoshop. If I want really nice real media tools, I'll use rebelle 4 on computer or realistic paint studio on ipad.

    The price range on corel really is too much, I picked up 2020 with the humble bundle, and for $30 sure it's a cool toy. But it is way too complex, features are hidden in hard-to-find menus, and its implementation is not clean. I dislike when it feels as though I have to work against the software I'm using; I want the software to get out of the way, and just let me paint. These days I'm using Leonardo for sketching+perspective drawing (Autodesk sketchbook is less efficient workflow for perspective drawing imo), and affinity photo for painting.

    • @ArtOfWesGardner

    • @ArtOfWesGardner
      @ArtOfWesGardner  2 роки тому

      I think the "every 5 years" idea you have is a great one, that way you get the "best of" features from the previous years after they work out the kinks, while always having a version of Painter to fall back on and use.

  • @carlt8187

    I hope Corel watches this as I think a lot of what you said needs to be considered by their product management. I think if they made the full license $200 it would be absolutely worth it. As it is, a full license is over priced.
    Yet I've tried many times to switch off Painter to PS (or something else), but keep coming back to it. Painter is extraordinarily deep and it's brush engines the most remarkable across a huge span of simulated media. I continue to discover new ways of working and having happy accidents just playing with the incredible array of brushes that come with it.
    I think if your art style is coloured line art/manga then Painter may be an expensive luxury as lots of other software can be used just as effectively. For an actual painting workflow (i.e., applying and working blocks of colour use stroke or texture abstractions to convey detail) then Painter is totally worth considering.

    • @the7thtemple321
      @the7thtemple321 2 роки тому

      I’m a painter user *cough* and I agree the full license is high but the upgrade is reasonable with a good deal. You can upgrade from any legacy version too I believe. I guess if you want the power of a professional studio you have to pay a bit more, same as Ps...

    I agree with your comments with Painter, it seems to be stuck in the past which is a pity. Used it with Painter 2 and upgraded for years but so many features still seem to be stuck. So much needs to be upgraded and the new brushes just don't spark the interest in the same way

    I would love Corel Painter so much if I were as good as Skip Allen. I just took a 16 weeks digital painting class that used only corel painter. We learned some of the basic and I like corel painter more after the class. However, at the end of the day, if I want to paint in a digital style, I will use Clip Studio Paint. If I want real paint, I use real oil, acrylic, or watercolor. Sorry, even Rebelle 4 is still not good enough. Rebelle 4 oil is very nice, but the setting for the brush stroke is very limited. For example, you cannot have a brush that is thick at the beginning but tapper to a nice point at the end of the stroke.

      Thank you for the comment, cisp! I thought when you said "I used Painter.... 2007...2006.." you were going to say longer. I remember using it in 1995 when they shipped it in a paint can. My Wacom tablet used a ADB connector. I used it so much i had grooves cut into the surface of my tablet. Getting back into it again after years. I've been buying the upgrades for years just to support development, and because i use it to goof around every now and again. I don't think the upgrades on sale prices are that bad. • @louisklein9207
    @louisklein9207 2 роки тому +7

    I think what’s missing from this review is why it costs so much. For example, photoshop is an industry standard art tool because of tools you as an artist may never use but others in the work pipeline do. It allows everyone to work in a consistent software which makes things easier when projects move up and down the pipe. I’m not sure what it is that justifies Corel’s price but the fact that they continue to charge it and people pay it there must be something. Maybe it comes down to the quality of art it produces when printed? I don’t know but I do know there is a lot more to brush quality then it’s appearance and texture. On a PC monitor many of these programs produce similar results but perhaps once printed changes in quality become more present.

    • @ArtOfWesGardner
      @ArtOfWesGardner  2 роки тому +3

      For $99 I think that Painter 21 would be a pretty good get! You can start off with something like Krita (which is no-cost to download and use), or something like Paintstorm Studio (low cost, $20 the last time I checked) to see if digital art is something you'd like to further pursue and save a bit of money in the process. Then, you have your choice between things like CLIP Studio Paint, ArtRage, Rebelle, SAI, Affinity Photo, Medibang, and more (which range anywhere from the $20 - $80 range). That doesn't even start talking about the mobile stuff like ProCreate, Infinite Painter, and more! It's all about what you're looking to do, as I don't really think you'll be "missing out" with any choice you make, unless you REALLY want to try one of the settings in a specific software that may not be offered in others. Remember, it's the artist, not the tools, that make the art wonderful!

    Update 5/27/2022: I now have two boxes with Windows 11 on both. CP 2022 does not play well with W-11. IF Corel doesn't do some updates that correct the problems (CP actually shuts my computer down! It freezes up, sometimes won't close without using Task Manager. These are major problems).
    Today, 1/31-2022, Corel Painter 2021 (full version, not education/academic or other abbreviated versions) can be purchased for under $100. Then the user can upgrade to 2022 for less than half the full retail price. It is even less expensive if you wait for the next version to upgrade to 2022.

      Oh wow, I had no idea about the Surface Pro 7! Yeah, that's.....not great. And even though I'm really liking Painter 2021 (much more than 2019, which I painted with in the video), those pop-ups are also not great.

    I had and used Corel for years. I just don't think the extra cost is worth the bloated, over complicated mess that Painter has become. It is expecially not worth it when there are so many affordable options that can do what it does. I use Clip Studio, and sometimes Krita 5.1. I am not paying 200 per upgrade anymore, it's just not justified or warranted. I do art for a living and still it's just not worth it to me.

      That is it's biggest selling point. It's wasn't so much Adobe going subscription because Corel has for some of it's software (and strictly subscription on CorelDRAW) but made subscription the ONLY choice.

      @ArtOfWesGardner  2 роки тому

      Absolutely. Like, if you're dedicated and "all in" regarding digital painting, and Painter has the exact features you're looking for, it may be a worthy investment (as if you can make the cost of the software back via commissions and professional work, it balances out). But for beginner to intermediate digital artists, it's a hard sell since there's so many amazing, less costly options available nowadays. Thank you for the great comment!

    How do you figure $400 for Corel is for a 1-year license? I have Corel 16. It still functions as well as it ever did. It will continue to to do so. It is mine, not a subscription. It is one thing to say that Corel is not worth the money for its function. It's another to represent it as something it is not.
    We have to fight against the insidious idea of continually upgrading software just because its available. I use CS6 master suite for my work everyday. It's mine, not a subscription. I do not need to, nor will I "upgrade."

  • @MrJBARRON

    You had me at the cute intro, but kind of lost me after going on about the price for long. Corel being a game changer as you said is hardly comparable to the cheap or free programs. A better price comparison would be between Adobe Photoshop CC the industry standard for digital art and then we're talking similar pricing, Corel being a bit cheaper. Bottom line is if you're a kid fresh out of school choose the cheaper options. If you're an adult with a job, get the software that does what you want it to do, no compromise. If digital painting is your thing, Corel is worth the extra money.

Everytime I call they don’t answer or put me on hold and tell me to put in a ticket. I agree it has professional features, but seriously, the amount of lag and problems I have with no resolution sucks. I will keep using till I find something better I’m just upset they don’t answer or care ?? They have some professional features but the program is dated and support is clueless and lacking any of sort of care of knowledge ???

Not to mention the educational infrastructure and support that's available.

I can't use it, it's laggy and I'm just so disappointed in it. Krita, at the moment, is about £17 but I think it's worth it more than Corel. I'm a beginner to digital art, so £300 is definitely out of the question, even if I was a pro.

With painter and even clip art they have better brushstrokes and work looks more organic.

If it worked like every other color picker in every other program in the world people would use it for digital painting. When this got brought up on the forum the devs said they wouldnt fix it because the current picker allows you to pick colors off of webpages and shit....as if it wasnt the simplest thing in the world to just save an image to the clipboard and copy paste it into the document like ppl do in PS...
