I been using Painter for over ten years. Painter 2023 is amazing; they have Fluid brushes that are amazing. Huge improvements to the selections. There are some great classes at the Digital Art Academy with Karen Bonaker and Skip Allen. Karen also has some classes in Rebelle as well.

As purely as a part time hobbiest, I bought Painter years ago and have barely a clue how to use most of the tools. I had been debating on upgrading from 2019 to 2023, because when I upgraded TO 2019 I lost a couple of my favorite brushes, they just didn't function at all like they had before. But I think your comments have encouraged me to go ahead and upgrade to 2023. Maybe I'll finally figure out how to blend the way I want.

You revitalized my interest in Painter. I've been using it for 6 months and I like it but I was thinking about Photoshop because everyone uses it so there are more tutorials and the best brushes and blenders for making all the content that I enjoy. But Painter is an adventure and I've barely scratched the surface. Plus I own Painter forever now, and I hate the idea of software subscriptions.

I agree with you about Corel Painter. It is worth the initial investment. There is a big learning curve. Coming across an issue like this, I took a deep breath, and made a commitment to read the manual, 10 pages/day, plus watch videos; at a pace I can handle. I would recommend first learning the different brush categories (through videos), so one can get started right away. Hold down CTRL + ALT to adjust your brush size. Read the few pages about the shortcut keys, especially zoom and pan, and you'll have much relief. Learn how to use the Color Mixer. And then you are ready to go with your first painting. And when you are ready, create your own brush, which will help you to really understand this software much better (but first watch Roxane Lapa first of five videos on creating brushes - not a waste of time). What an outstanding piece of software!

The latest offer from Humble Bundle has Corel Painter 2022, plus a number of brush packs, and some other bits and bobs, for 46 AUD (about 35 USD). Full licensed version, registerable, etc. They seem to offer the "latest but one" version every 12 months for a disgustingly cheap price. Fully legit. I tried for weeks to work with Corel customer service, with no luck. They keep referring me to other people or did not even get back to me. I looked online and found out that Corel is known for its bad customer service. I finally had them return my money. The people that refund the money are very professional and very helpful. There billing is not a part of Corel, it is a separate company. Thanks for the tip. In the mean time, I may pick up Rebelle. The water color features sound great.

While I'm glad I have it in my list of softwares installed for art, I only use it in VERY particular instances, as other softwares can mimic a majority of the results Painter provides, at a much faster and easier-to-reproduce rate. Thank you for the video! I had a different experience with Painter, went looking for opinions and wanted to share my experience.
Bought Painter 2022 on humble bundle recently and I was honestly kind of disappointed with it. Half of the software looks like it's stuck in the 90s and hasn't been touched since. Performance is all over the place, zooming the canvas freezes the program, switching between tools freezes the software for about 0.5 seconds while it loads the UI. Getting a popup ad when the program isn't even running. Then I crashed 4 times in the span of a couple of hours and found out it seemingly doesn't have an auto-save feature. Excuse me what? I've used Krita for about 5000 hours and literally never lost work because the autosave is bomb-proof, and since version 4 it hasn't crashed for me in years. I got a really bad first impression on Painter and asked for a refund. Not sure if Humblebundle even does refunds on bundles but if not I guess for 30€ it's not as bad as it could be. My thoughts a couple of hours ago was that I in all honesty can't use Painter in this state for any serious work.
This video has me second guessing myself now, like maybe I should give it another shot. I get the impression there's a lot hidden in the menus that might make it worth the trouble. I got Rebelle 5 Pro for $10 on sale for the real media, and a decade of experience with Krita, so the competition is tough, but maybe it'll be worth the effort. Thank you!

I think you hit this review on the nose. I upgraded to Painter 2022 from PAinter 2019 as well. The thing that helped me upgrade is that they give you a trial period to see if you want to jump on it. And the improvement in speed was a major selling point - It dragged so much before this . As a professional illustrator in the film and advertising field I can't waste time . I have to work fast!
And of course I upgraded and have been upgrading since painter 4. ( ancient times) Not becuse I just had to have it but because I'm a pro and didn't want to miss out on some things that Photoshop couldn't do. The feature that made me get PAinter in the first place was something that I haven't seen in other programs : The Image hose ! That saved me lots of time on certain projects.
I thought the perspective tool would be handy as well. But I find since I know perspective pretty well i just eyeball everything , which is just faster. Thew snap-to-path feature comes in handy sometimes too.
But the best for me is jumping back and forth from Painter to photoshop and I finish in photoshop because I usually have lots of adjustment and mask layers ,type and other items that PAinter dosent support after which it always has to go to an designer who needs to mess around with it even more and they don't know painter from a hole in the ground.
    Good review sir!

I just love Artrage, so easy to use, and so dam good ( wish color mixing was a bit better however) I just dont have the desire to learn any other software I am producing work that has even tricked oil painters in thinking it was all done on a canvas. That is why i am set on Artrage.

I loveeeeee ArtRage too! I really fell in love during ArtRage 6, and thankfully ArtRage Vitae is out and continued to improve upon the already-great brush engine. The two problems I had with Painter were mostly my own inattentiveness and my old pc.
In the 12 version with which I started there were two crosses in the top right corner to close, and I often accidentally hit the bottom one
and this closes the painting area with the associated menu, and this cannot be remedied with a restart of the program, but only with a new installation.
I don't know if that was fixed in the 19 or 21 version I have. I felt like I had to reinstall the 12 version every month, because of that.
The second problem was that my pc was too weak at the time, with an Athlon 6000+ two-core processor with 3GHz.
It was pretty laggy, normal drawing with a pencil or ink went quite well, but it was uncomfortable when I wanted to erase things or use paint brushes,
I always had to wait quite a bit until my strokes were finished.
I didn't know that before and wouldn't have bought it otherwise and would have stayed with free alternatives until I bought a better pc.
That's why I hardly used it and only after I had a new pc in 2015.
I seem to remember that painter only crashed twice for me and that was the old 12 version, the others weren't.

The blending modes have been in Painter since at least Painter 11. They did finally add color dodge and burn modes in 2022.
Amazing out-of-the-box brush variety and results is my #1 reason for staying with Painter. I am constantly looking for an alternative and see a lot of inexpensive options, but they don't replace Painter as an all-around art package for me. I don't think it's as difficult as you make it seem. I barely feel the need to do brush customization. One thing that no one talks about is that Painter has amazing tool tip support for its UI that explains a lot! I have to say that majority of first and second video about Corel is heavily skewed into pricing aspect of the software. I would like to see a more balanced view of the software. While price is important, it should not overshadow the potential value of the software. Price is what we pay, value is what we get. Price is easy, its just a number. But value is something that is harder to judge, and I think it would be of more value to your audience if videos were more balanced to talk about features, use case scenarios more. While you touched on it, it was always in the context of price, and not as a feature review or showcase. As you said, you are still a beginner in terms of what tools and features you use in Corel, so naturally for that kind of user, price is steep. For someone who really takes advantage of more advance tools or unique tools of Corel, things will be valued differently. And the price will be seen differently.
That being said, I appreciate your videos and looking forward to staying for the commentary of various digital painting topics. In this one in particular, I feel it was too focused on price, to the point where it overshadows discovery of value for those watching and thinking of exploring corel.
    Cheers!

    • @ArtOfWesGardner
      @ArtOfWesGardner  2 роки тому +2

Very well said, Krunoslav! I agree, I probably harped for too long about the monetary price for the program, as the value for what you get for the money IS very good. However, I can't help but have the feeling that for a large percentage of users who are interested in digital art, the cost of Painter could be prohibitively expensive when compared to other "traditional digital" art tools. For the suite of features and depth of the different brush engines and how each portion interacts with one another, I think Corel Painter's the most comprehensive digital painting software on the planet. But if a user is just looking for a fun way to get a "traditional look" for their digital art, Painter may be overkill to recommend. It's like, would I recommend buying a $200,000 sports car if you're mainly going to be picking up the kids from daycare and swinging by the grocery store every now and then? Probably not, as the needs don't justify the cost investment, unless you're VERY enthusiastic about the vehicle in question. Thank you for the awesome comment and insight, I love your channel!

The performance when going between brush types is MUCH better in Painter 2022 than my experience with Painter 2019. It seems like in the "year-over-year" updates, Corel is starting to focus on performance improvements and streamlining the front and back-end of the software, which is great! I've used Photoshop for yeearrrrs, and due to so much support over the past few decades that Photoshop has received (due to being the "industry standard" in a lot of entertainment industries for a variety of jobs), the painting engine has become very robust! Fresco basically takes the "wet brush" engines from Photoshop and makes it its own standalone app, but for total control you can't beat Photoshop!

The reason Painter rarely does upgrades is because it's fully customizable from Day 1. Typical upgrades are many times just tweaks of the settings that are unlocked and resold. Painter allows practically every aspect of all of the brushes to be customized. In fact, Its so customizable, that there's no reason to purchase another brush pack. All brushes can be created inside the software. I use 3 different versions. Essentials 8 for the simplicity, 2019 for training because I purchased Aaron Ruttens 2019 course that teaches everything about the program, and 2023 the latest version for the updates. I enjoy all 3 for different reasons.

I mean, I think a 1080 should definitely run Corel comfortably, but just know the more layers and "effects" (like thick brushes, the realistic water color stuff, etc), it's gonna start making your PC sound like a jet is taking off LOL. My 3060 gets a pretty big workout when I start working above like 5000x5000 at 300dpi with 5-ish layers working with one another.

Painter comes with a performance optimizer that will tell you how well it thinks it will run on your computer. Painter has multiple brush engines. Only some use the GPU so depending on your brush category choices it may not even matter. I ran Painter 2019 and Painter 2022 on a RX480 GPU until recently which is about the same vintage as the 1080 and it was fine. I'd say having a good CPU and 8GB+ RAM are more important.

There is something intangible missing from your perspective. Corel is a program that can take a life time to master albeit their barrier to entry is high. You continue to use Corel as a casual user. By this I mean if you look at results from a professional who uses Corel exclusively vs the results from a user using any of the software you mentioned there is no comparison. Yes, all software today can give you realistic traditional results when looking at art on a PC monitor however when professionally printed on to a canvas or printed for any professional use, if a traditional look is what you’re after Corel will be the only one that can stand up to a real painting. Granted, this is not what most casual artists or video game company’s require so in that sense Corel would not be worth it however it is the reason it is used by such greats as Todd Lockwood, John Howe, Jeff Easley, and so on….

So my advice if anyone has any problems with Corel software....do not bother with the ticket and chat systems. The people there seem to be muppets drowning, and floundering. Telephone a real person, and keep on them until the problem is solved. It worked for me. Submitting tickets is just a waste of your time. The response time is diabolical, and it is just too easy for them to blank you. Now I am looking forward to trying the software (at least it launches now) Your excellent channel looks like a good source of advice, and information. I have subscribed and look forward to getting going.

I am getting the same run around from so called Corel support. 10 calls, 3 days, multiple tickets created and NO resolution to the problem. I have used Painter over many years and was even in one of the early artists featured in a Painter how to book by Jeremy Sutton. Corel has changed their name to ALLUDO ( as in all you do). Honestly all they do is make their customers frustrated and feel ripped off.

Is the 22 bundle worth it, if I bought the 21 bundle last year?
There is also an offer with Rebelle 5 for 10$ i read on UA-cam in the comments.
Edit: settled with Rebelle 5. It was a complete version for €11.90 which I then bought.
I'm also wondering which version of the 5 this is, if it's an absolute basic version and I can do more with the Rebelle 3,
which I bought in a bundle with some extras and there were papers and some other stuff too. Then I wouldn't buy it.
Are these papers also compatible with rebelle 5?
Would it be better to wait for a bundle with Rebelle and spend 15-20$/€ more for all the extras, or did the bundle with Rebelle 3 already have most of the extras?

So my understanding is EVERY version of Rebelle 5 (meaning standard, and Pro) are $10. I'd actually recommend Rebelle 5 Pro over Painter 2022, especially if speed and computer hardware/performance are a concern.

I then checked again myself because I wasn't sure whether the offer was still available, and bought the Rebelle 5 pro.
I'm interested in things that look traditional, but also things that are only possible digitally.
I bought the bundle, it wasn't expensive either and this month I didn't spend much money and my family said I can treat myself to it.
      Thanks for the answers.
I bought the pack without Paintshop and the other two programs.
I already had one, the other was something I would rather not use, and I remembered that I have Luminar 4 and Ai and at Paint Shop 22 mainly a few AI things were added.
For the two 2€ I bought a pack of coloured pencils for coloured sketches in my sketchbook today while shopping for groceries,
and they are quite good, nice and intense and a bit softer.
