  • Te Puia is New Zealand's National Maori Arts and Craft Centre. The National Carving School was established in 1967. First year students, Cori Marsters and Kawana Waititi, talk about their experience at the school and why they decided to learn the art of carving.

My kuia Maunga her brother Kima Hakaraia was a Master carver back in the 1950s.
Koro Kima, use to get a piece of drift wood from the lake in Ohinemutu, see some tourists enter the village, do a carving on the drift wood sell it to the tourists. Koro Kima would buy sweets and broken biscuits for all the kids from the sale.

@Wahine2019 Kia ora sis. Te Wananga O Aotearoa have great whakairo courses in Aucks, I'm a chick and they let me do one for a year in 2018. There's part-time, 6 month courses too.
I dunno where u live but they probably hv courses all over the place. Low cost and we got chisels to keep as well. I just got a student loan to pay it, but some courses are free.
