INSANELY LOUD HOMEMADE 1.75” TITANIUM SALUTE CANISTER SHELL

- Here is a test 1.75” titanium salute shell I made using rice hulls as a filler/bulking agent to decrease the amount of flash powder needed to make one of these, which saves on costs of chemicals. I also wanted to see if the lower amount of powder used would result in a noticeable change in sound of the salute.
The result was surprising, as it was the loudest salute I’ve ever made like this. The difference being that I normally fill the casing 3/4 full of all flash powder and no filler (About 60grams of flash). Using the rice hill filler allowed me to fill the case of this shell using only 30grams and was much more powerful.
How I make these salutes: (I use TPA flash powder or the typical 70:30 mix). I take a typical consumer Excalibur shell and empty the contents. Using a tablespoon, I add a a scoop of flash then a scoop of hulls or grass seed, another scoop of flash and another scoop of hulls until I get 3/4 of the case filled. Push the top disc you had to remove to empty the contents back in to the casing. Then I fill the remaining space up to the top of the case with hot glue. Let cool then turn upside down and add the lift powder or just leave it in the bottom of the casing where it originally is in consumer shells. - Розваги

TPA is a good choice. I do this for safety reasons and it doesn't seem to sacrifice sound or "pressure wave" much, if at all. Stay green and safe!
Well done Sir..! I read the description too:) Rule of thumb is half full for flash - needs room to propagate. I like the idea of rice hulls too but I keep thinking its not needed for an unknown reason. Try reinforcing your tube with a couple wraps of kraft paper using watered down wood glue. Stuff gets strong like that. Most salutes use very little flash as compared to the size of the shell persey. Its all it in the casing really. Stronger it is the louder it is.

I agree with what you said and usually I do reinforce these by spiking with hemp string and a couple layers of wheat pasted kraft paper over the spiking. That’s why I was so surprised at the power this shell had lol...considering I just threw it together quick to test out the hulls as bulking agent theory and only used some of the brown tape from Uline as reinforcement instead of the usual spike and paste method I normally use
houseoffire72 yes. Around half to 3/4 full is key. a lot of people make the mistake of filling the shell/ tube completely. A fuller tube doesn’t equal bigger boom. I’ve found rice hulls or small chips of pet bedding keep fine flash powder from caking. Caked up flash is no good.

PyRoOWL 1995 Cab-O-Sil works great for anticaking and fluffy flash. Creates small micro pockets for air. Try some 50/50 Bullseye smokeless and flash. ;)
Its true but small airgaps in the flash made by lets say different size of aluminium particles or the ricehulls in this case really could play a huge factor here too becouse that shit can get really scary more powerfull just becouse of these small airpockets in the mixture speeds up the burn rate Even more

Nice! When I used to make my own. I noticed when using larger shells or casings. Its much more louder when you fill only half or a little more than half the shell. If your adding a lot of flash u have to put more paste on the shell to create pressure to compensate. Smaller shells u can fill all the way
bomsexplosive Thanks man! Yea I agree with you 100%. I’ve tried 3” ball shells that way and have noticed it to be louder too when only filled half way or a little more. Was a little let down at the performance of the same 3” shell when nearly filled, a lot of wasted precious fp lol... but ya live and learn haha
HomeGrownPyro yup! I believe when filling it almost 100%, the casing will be too weak to hold in pressure of that much fp causing the break to sound soft. Maybe if you added a super thick layer of past or a heavy walled casing would be loud if filled all the way. But I still would go with the half way filled method. Saves on composition 👍
@@bomsexplosive If yall are still alive J.B. weld becomes as hard as steel and now they have the kind that dries in minutes instead of a day { i use it on end caps},didnt know about the little over half trick until reading comments, didnt say nothing in Preperatory Manual of Cake Mixes Fourth, or Uncle Shugahs 1966 edition of how to make stuff thats hot and burns really fast and variations on theme....thanx again hopefully this crap in Cali does not shut down the ol rain sleet or snow boys, cause using Afro -American inhgenuity on materials just aint as nice as say powdered titainium or mag, sittin there with a hack saw or palm sander takes days ,it woiks but you gotta woik for it.

If your nervous about the hot glue near your pyro and need an alternative try titebond ultra woodglue. It takes a day to dry but makes a very solid plug and holds up to the fireing tests satisfactory!
If you have bulk color stars but no titanium mesh put them into a ziplock and add a few tablespoons of water them roll them up in a towel and smash them up with a rubber deadblow hammer against a treestump or rock you dont like. It takes a long time to break them, then requires some sifting through a plastic or aluminum screening but the damp dust can be used in place of titanium mesh in salutes. The generated dust still works wet but works even better when dried for a day or two.

How did the “tail” part work out. I couldn’t really tell?? I’ve been trying to figure out how to add tails to my cans and ball shells
It didn't work out to good with this one. I just glued a couple small stars to the top of the can, but they ended up lighting inside of the tube because I used the regular green fuse that normally comes on the shells which burns to slow to ignite a tail properly. Had I used quick match instead or that paper fast fuse sold at the stores, it would have worked properly. Give it a try using the quick fuse and it will work good for you
all you need to know is "spolete fuse" or "timed fuse". Or you can add hand flare mix pr strobe mix to replace timed fuse mix.
The flash i love it
If you don't fill the composition all the way, it has more time to burn before the shell bursts. Military artillery simulators (similar to a police flash bang) are only filled about halfway. The ullage space allows for a more complete reaction before the device disassembles and confinement is lost.

@@PyroJovanny912 Skylighter sells them as size 1-9/16" tubes in quantities of 50 for $30.50. You can also use empty toilet paper rolls and just glue a couple more wraps of craft paper around it to bring it up to size

This is an old video but looking at the comments I see you’re still out there. I’m fairly new to the hobby got some hemi’s but haven’t built or launched any yet. I have fired an end fused M80 style out of 3/4” metal conduit. With 3.5 grams of my home made flash it was definitely loud. Trick is the the right lift charge. They weigh 14g and I have found it takes at least 2g of my granulated bp to get decent height. I’ll make some videos in the future. Thanks cheers

Bro the rising tail lit from the fuse. Try gluing it around the time fuse area if you’re gunna use a regular fuse, if you wanna leave the tails on the top of the shell use quick match to fire the shell

I really want to start making my own. The stuff you can buy at the fireworks stands just doesn't cut it. Do you plan on ever doing any how to videos, or do you know of some good videos or websites to get people started out making their own?
Andrew Beagles - I've been wanting to start making some tutorials but have been too busy to even make anything new lately. Things should slow down in the next couple weeks and will have some down time to do some building.
If you're serious about getting started in the hobby, here is a few recommendations I can give you to help get you started:
1.) Go to skylighter.com and sign up to receive daily emails from them. The emails include daily deals on supplies as well as detailed, step by step Pyro projects. You can also search the website and find every project ever posted by them free of charge.
2.) I would recommend joining either fireworking.com or passfire.com. Both sites cost a small fee to join but have tons of detailed information, tutorials, etc; as well as a members forum, where you can ask any questions you may have and get multiple answers from other Pyros with many years of experience in the hobby.
3.) These are the books/articles I found on the internet that you can download in PDF. format, print and read. They are great reference to have on hand in any pyros workshop:
*Pyrotechnica IX and XI - by Arturo Fulcanelli - These are known as the Fulcanelli Papers or Fulcanelli Articles. (They are the go-to on traditional ItaloAmerican cylindrical shell manufacture.)
* Fireworks: The Art, Science, and Technique - by Dr. Takeo Shimizu. (This is the go-to book on japanese shell production.)
* Best of AFN (American Fireworks News) - are all really good as well.
4.) UA-cam user channels to check out:
1.)Ned Gorski. He has a lot of good how to videos and runs the fireworking.com website.
2.)Bangkokpyro. The guys name is Paul and he too has some really good videos to learn from.
Good luck, hope you find as much joy in the hobby as I have and be safe.
My final tip of advice is to be cautious when researching on the internet. There is a LOT of inaccurate, outdated or downright dangerous info out there all over the web. Please do your due diligence reading, watching and learning to gain a basic understanding before jumping in to your first project.
Any of the resources I listed above are reliable sources for correct, proper and safe information and will get you started on the right path into the hobby.

This sounds like a loud crack. Which ones are louder and sound more like booms that are so loud, you feel it in your chest. They usually shoot them off at parks for the first shots. Biiiig loud and bright flashes.
Izlude Tingel Those are salute shells just like this one. Difference being the one in this vid is a consumer size canister and the louder ones your refering to are 1.3g display shells which are much larger than this and contain more powder, which of course results in a louder and more powerful boom
i used to buy 1.75 inch penut salutes back in 2008. man they were so bad they would roar in the sky for 7 seconds strait after they exploded. real excalibur brand name at that. when we could buy the 25 shell pack for 45 bucks back then. now there 160 bucks a 25pack in texas. i herd!!!

Can you use sunflower seed shells for the powder ? Instead of rice hulls ?
Yes you can or grass seed also works well. With the sunflower seed shells, breaking the shells up a little bit first may give the best results for canister shells this size. But will probably still work well if ya don't break them up first
HomeGrownPyro what would you say the correct ratio of hulls to flash would be? Typically I make 1.75”/2” ball shells and it’s quite a pain in the ass to fill shells that small with everything. I just fill them halfway I used to add chips of cedar to my shells but yet again it was a pain in the ass. Grass seed as you mentioned might be easier to funnel into my ping pong ball shells.

@@spectator3349 No you can find them in the stores too. There are salute ball shells, salute canister shells and multi shot salute cakes. They usually dont say the word salute on the packaging though so ya gotta search some vids on here for consumer salutes and see what the product names for the year (since the names usually change from year to year) and write them down so you know what to look for at the firework store...Or ya gotta ask a worker at the store if they have any. Usually the answer will be no they are illegal, but sometimes ya get lucky and they hook you up with a tour of the backroom lol

Did you use anything to prime the inner fuse?
No I didn't use any prime on the fuse, it isn't needed for salutes because of how easily flash ignites. For my color shells, I cross match all fuses or spolettes....the only time I usually use prime is when using visco fuse for shell inserts.
I use visco for mine and sometimes the fuse doesn't ignite and the shell just falls down to the ground. I don't know how to make primer but is there any way you can tell me the way to make it?
@@1NebraskaPyro hey man my bad for the late reply, never got an alert so I just saw your reply now...anyway there's a couple things you can do to help with ignition issues when using visco fuse... Not sure if you're using chinese or American visco but I've used American visco plenty of times in the past and was able to easily cross match the ends of it with a piece of black match just like you would do with regular time fuse. After you figure out the length of fuse you need to time the shell just add 2" on to that and mark each end in 1". Take a razor blade and cut/split the fuse down the center to the 1" mark, place a piece or 2 of black match in between that slit you just made and slide it down to that 1" mark and tie the piece of visco closed just above the black match.
Another method that works particularly with Chinese visco is to leave an extra half inch to an inch of fuse at both ends and cut it diagonally from the end of the fuse to the mark you made showing the extra length. Cutting it like this creates a sharp point at each end of the fuse and makes the fire transfer better.
The next way I know of is to make a bp slurry using nitrocellulose lacquer and bp to dip the ends of the fuse in. I personally have only used this method a handful of times with visco and it worked fine. However I have read that sometimes this method can fail due to the slurry for some reason blocking fire transfer, causing the passfire to blow back out the bottom side of the fuse rather than igniting the prime at the end of the fuse inside the shell.

I do have a couple of them that I use most of the time, especially if I'm lighting multiple items...I just forgot to grab one from the house and figured eh screw it its just a quick test shell... lol.

Was the hulls covered in flash before putting it in the canister or just by itself?
Nope just by itself. As I was filling the shell I’d add a spoon of hulls like every 2-3 spoons of flash. It all mixes together as your finishing up the shell and during handling

How much lift charge?
10% the shells weight. I can’t remember what this one weighed I’d have to check notes. So if it weighed 60grams I use minimum of 6 grams of Lift powder.
I’ll usually use 10% plus one or two extra grams for good measure to be sure it gets a safe height.

Is the tpa flash granulated? Or just mixed?
Just mixed into a dry powder. For this shell I used grass seed as a filler and just filled a 60g canister shell casing up about 3/4 the way, by adding a scoop of seed then a scoop of tpa and go back n forth between the two till it’s filled to your preference.

And I kinda understand it so I open the top of a canister then empty it out then put the powder that's mix with the stars? Then I put the things that look like rice? Them repeat until full and the bottom (bp) I leave it alone or put more?

Will do haha. Thanks for checking the video out. For this shell I sprayed the inside of the casing with spray adhesive and added a spoon of titanium and shook it around to coat the inside of the tube, will prob look better and easier to just mix in with the comp next time.

@@southflpyrotechnics does adding star pieces create a colored salute effect? I saw these green salutes at a local display last summer and they were awesome! Only time I've ever seen salutes with that vibrant of color to them. Been trying to figure out how to do it since and there isn't much literature out there about them. However, was thinking of trying to make some salutes using kclo4 based colored star compositions instead of flash powder to see if that would give the desired effect, since a lot of star compositions have the same ingredients as flash powder + the additional chems for color.
@@HomeGrownPyro1 in a pinch crushing up your colorstars with a rubber deadblow hammer while their moistened by a spray bottle then after a day or two of airdrying out carefully wrapping said crushed to powder stars up lose in a balled piece of brown craft paper works to color flash and bp bursts, but be sure the two powders do not touch. Additional sulfers and other minerals have a tendency to destabilise your powders making them sensitive to friction and crushing/packing. Ironically using too much color blend in a salute softend/dampened the boom, best to test a few shots to find the ratio that works best for you. Simply add some loose clay on the open end then tape over it a half dozen times. If you don't have extra clay or tape simply add a well fitting paper ball, gently push it in with the handle of a screwdriver but don't pack the powder down at all any. Flash hates being packed tight with unforgiving results to the health of folks hands. Hope it helps! I would sure love to see the video results of your custom bangers! :)
P.s. some stars may be capible of being blended directly with your powder but due to suppliers all following different cookbooks and products all having slightly different powders your best taking a teaspoon scoop of your flash or flash substitutes and a quarter teaspoon or less of color formula before each new build and hammer/crush/friction testing your work materials far away from your workspace and pyro stash. Just bludgeon the test clump with welders gloves on while weilding your trusty hammer and take caution to keep the face and eyes away from the possible high heat source. As always this hobby is a lot safer when approached with the upmost caution and patience. Never rush nothing. A short break to take a breather to regain patience during a long builds way better then a broken hand due to rushing things or no arms at all.
