Beautiful and great upload! But why do jazzmusicians always refer to original keys. Such as C and Eb while this probably first recording is in Db and B and the instrumental filmscore is in G
The original title is without 'on' . Green Dolphin Street is the seastreet around New Zealand so very hard to kiss the ground without drowning. I never understood the lyrics because they have nothing to do with the movie, do they?

No. The movie is an overblown MGM soap opera based upon a dopey English novel. The song is far better than the movie. Especially hard to kiss the ground when there's an earthquake and tidal wave going on as in the movie.
Why don't the song lyrics match the movie plot? just a guess, oftentimes songs extracted from movie soundtracks had lyrics written to them long after the music was written. In other words, the songwriter doesn't actually write a song, but writes the movie soundtrack - a theme is extracted and a lyricist engaged to write lyrics so a record can be released to support the movie release.

Absolutely one of the classics, excellent musical score, just listen to the heart wrenching lyrics.

The deep meaning I got from the song, and the movie was that life always takes twists, and turns. The way that the two sisters-Marianne,and Marguerite fell in love with the same man, but the man had huge weak flaws that not only changed all of their lives, just like the disasters they encountered in the film. The great earthquake, and the deadly tsunami! Plus the man they loved-(William Ozone), who thought he was in love with the younger sister-Marguerite, but by fate or karma, my personal opinion God who controls everything altered all of their choices! That's where that line in the song"So very hard to kiss the ground without drowning" means to me. You plan your future, but the Lord is REALLY DIRECTING YOUR STEPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(Proverbs Ch.16:9) I see this viewing it in God's vision. God ALWAYS HAS THE FINAL SAY! PERIOD! At the end of the film, they all realized they were meant to be with their choices. Marianne stayed married to William, and their child, and Marguerite becoming a nun with the church. Two other films remind me of Green Dolphin Street, (1946)-"The Razor's Edge" starring Tyrone Power, and "The Bridge Of San Luis Rey"-(1944), starring Lynn Bari,Akim Tamiroff, and Louis Calhern, and Francis Lederer.

@@Observatur the remark was answering to the other person who couldn't understand the lyrics in the song-Green Dolphin Street where it says, so very hard to kiss the ground without drowning. It refers to the younger sister-(Marguerite), who was in love with William, but William was weak, and flawed being manipulated by the older sister-(Marianne)! And his awful luck, and his drunkeness, plus the two disasters that almost destroyed them! That was the point of the song tied to the film! With all due respect to your statements.
