Did you know that wearing glasses that dont have uv protection can actually increase damage to the eyes. This happens by allowing the pupils to open more due to the shade effect, which in turn, allows more uv rays into the eyes more than not wearing them.
Yes, very important to know if they have UV protection. It should state on the glasses if they do, and even with that it makes you wonder if they were made right or if they are accurate.
@@manuelgutierrez2300 When you sit under the shade of a tree, you don't have the light directly traveling to your eyes anyway. You only have reflected light off other surfaces, which is much lower in intensity than what would cause damage.
So I was just looking into this (bought some cheep sunglasses off amazon and don't know that I can trust the accuracy of their labeling) - learned that you can test this fairly easily by using a black light to see if something that glows under UV light (like a security strip on a $20 bill) will still do so when shining the light through the lens of your glasses. I tested it out on my nice Smith band cycling glasses as well as the cheep ones and they both made the strip disappear completely, so that's comforting! Going to test all my glasses now.
Glasses in general are some of the most overpriced things, and there's a point where you're paying for the brand, not the glasses, it's because the vast majority of glasses are made by one company, Luxottica
Hey doc, do you have any recommendations for cheaper sunglasses brands or places to buy them that would provide adequate UV protection? I usually wear the amazon/walmart/gas station specials
i bought cheap sunglasses with uv 400 (and categorie 3). I wanted to know how often should i change them? I saw 2 years on google, maybe every year if i wear them frequently?
Very interesting Doc, but these were all things that i already knew myself (i've done quite a bit of extensive research!). What i am very interested to hear your thoughts about is: do wraparound sunglasses work better than the more flat varieties? Let me rephrase that: what i'd like to know is: are curved lenses better, both optically and functionwise, than the flatter ones? I have floaters in both my eyes, am light-sensitive (which more often than not triggers migraines), and definitely need a dark sun lens, polarized of course. Would be great if you could also tell me more about the best sun lens tints (brown / grey / green). Thanks!

Dr. What can you tell an eye doctor that sunglasses are not effective when asking for a medical tint exemption? He might say wear sunglasses. What do you say to respond?
I've actually been wanting to make this video. I would need to see if I can set something up so I could show the actually procedure. Thanks for the comment!
Just picked up a pair of prescription sunglasses with blue tint on the front sides of the them, took them off and everything is tinted blue lol Is that normal?
Hi, thx for the video. I'm looking for glases for driving. I find that I can't read my navigation that well with sunglasses. Is there something that I can do or choose to prevent this?
My eyes hurt from staring directly into high intensity led lights that i install every day at work. I wear amber lense safety glasses when indoors is this going to damage my vision
hi love ur video! i have a qn. what if my sunglass only a certain amount of UV protection? as in its not fully uv protexted but it is a little so is it harmful? thank you!!
Yes, if they don't have full UV protection, it's worse for your eyes than nothing at all - the darkness makes your pupils get bigger and let more damaging UV light in
Great information, I love that the video is short and able to deliver content really well, really appreciate it. I have a question, I looked up some of the sunglasses on Amazon, the description said 100% UV , but didn’t mention UVB , will it be a good sunglasses?
Thank you for the amazing comment! If it says 100% UV protection, than UVB should be included in that. Again, that's if they are being honest about it.
I am legally blind & color blind. Bright sunlight is a killer for me. It’s like a whiteout effect. It’s hard to walk around & focus. Can you recommend sunglasses that would fit over my glasses. Thx 😎
Everywhere on social media people are saying sun glasses are bad for you, and mess with your sleep rhythm. I quit wearing them about 2 years ago ? What say you mr.eye guy
If I was outside in the sun for 8 hours a day, and had to pick between wearing sunglasses or not... I would wear sunglasses for all of the benefits. You can always take the sunglasses off for a few minutes to get your light in to regulate your circadian rhythm.
Thanks for the video Doc. Have you heard the theory about sunglasses reducing the melanin production, and thereby would INCREASE the risk of sunburn (according to that theory - sunglasses would "fool" the body into thinking that the light isn't that bright). I'd love to get your feedback about that one...
Do a simple called expert wears non wrap sunglasses and didn’t explain they he’s dilating his pupils while letting lots of light in from the sides. Think about this Cheers
I mostly wear wrapped sunglasses. Also, just curious how large do you think the eye dilates behind sunglasses, and how much light gets through the eye through the side of sunglasses?
@@DrEyeGuy The way Tom put it is as though wearing non-wrap arounds with light being let in by the sides makes it worse. Is is just as bad as wearing fake sunglasses that offer no UV protection and your eyes are wide open? Thanks.

I only buy polarized sun glasses now. They are especially helpful for winter driving. That snow blindness from the glare is intense.
I'm the same way... polarized for sure.
Good to know that more expensive doesn't necessarily mean better. Thanks for all the great videos Dr Eye!
And thank you for watching them. 🙂

Only slightly. Wraparounds are commonly used among athletes for comfort. In my experience they have similar functions

Hi, they are a rayban frame, both uv protection and polarized.
Beautiful content!!! Thank you very much!!!!! Can you suggest some affordable sunglasses that protect against uva and uvb
Is polarised glasses also available with uv protection? If yes can you please suggest some sunglasses for me
Yeah check out oakley, Ray-Ban Costa all those brands have 100% UV plus polarized
Are more expensive polarized sunglasses better than cheaper polarized sunglasses or are they just all polarized at the same degree
Does cr-39 protect enough from UV? Im hiking a lot and I’m not looking for 100% but like 90% protection just so lost on info on the internet

Why not make all uv sunglasses with polorized?
Because it’s dangerous for motorcyclists. Polarization doesn’t allow you to identify wet spots on the road. Riding a motorcycle = no polarization.

Does wearing anti blue light helps your eyes from strain when using computer or mobile phones?
Most recent research is saying no. There are a lot of anectdotel cases though.

I just bought some 460 dollar luxury sunglasses. That has 100 percent UV Protected. They will last for years and protect my eyes from all sun rays.

if the glasses just say 100% UV protection, can I assume it means A and B
