Cloned from the Soviet ZSU-57-2, the Type 80 was China's attempt at bolstering its air defense capabilities. In Soviet service the ZSU-57-2 was deployed in batteries of 4 units (8 guns total). A battery of ZSU-57-2 was considered less effective than a battery of S-60 towed guns (6 guns plus a central fire control director) due to inferior fire control. As an air defense system I suspect these were always of dubious value, hence the rapid replacement of this concept in the Soviet Union by the shorter-ranged yet far more effective ZSU-23-4. Probably only useful in daylight in a flat, featureless desert environment where visibility is limited to a few hundred miles, for use against 1st generation anti-tank helicopters.
