So many videos about drum machines criticize them for lack of sound design capability or sound tweakability, which always pushes us synth newbies to more complex machines.Sometimes simplicity is good- smaller learning curve, more immediate results, so I really appreciate you not just pushing the idea that more complex is better. I have permission to buy that simpler (and cheaper) machine!
Whenever I think that the TR-8 is limited,, I think how much cool music has been made with the matches it is based on, and it doesn’t seem limited anymore
It's *terribly* limited, but not unusable.
To me, it's like Roland saw Volcas selling like hotcakes and assumed it's because people like being limited to 16 16-bar patterns. BLECH! TR-8 is basically a beta-edition that languishes in the shadow of the TR-8S. If you're buying one these days, know its limits and don't spend more than $2-300.
The variation feature is pretty neat though, and I like the way they did the scatter knob. Just not really well-specced for the 21st century unless you're sequencing on a laptop, in which case why bother?

It should have both, tell which rhythms and the machine adds drums, base, cool stuff and fills. I don''t want to spend days on creating a drum and play exactly in the same order. Thanks for the explanation.

I have been into music production since '99 and this is the first time I've ever learned that distinction. You're correct. My RYTM Mk 1. is labeled as a "Drum Computer" and I've never noticed this before!
I have been recording my drum machine to my sp 404 lately and creating fuller sequences with 8 bar drum loops... and you can manipulate the fx on the drums better too
The Analog Rytm is really great, you can tweak your analog drums, layer them with samples and save your kit for later. It is so versatile and deep, it was a revelation for me. Have fun

I’m in love with th elektron work flow ... I just bought a used analog rytm mk 1 because of one of you videos and I’m in love with it... I made fire already with it ... and I have like 5 elektron machines
I mean the analog rytm still gives you drums right when you need them, I just wish you could mute tracks without going into mute mode and adjust levels without switching tracks (basically it's set up to be used with an external mixer I guess)

I have the Tempest and just ordered the Arturia DrumBrute and ISLA S2400 Drum Sampler. Can't wait to sync them all together.
Some of my synths have drumkits. I like to use a loop pedal, laydown a beat when I'm jamming, messing around.
Sometimes I'll record the loop into my sampler if I want to use it for a recorded track in the future.

Interesting stuff. I like what you say about drum computers being that much more programmable. That the end results are more complex, I think this is true, but I don't think all grooveboxes are like drum computers. The Circuits are definitely more like drum machines with a couple of synths along for the ride. They are easily accesible for live programming and once the samples are loaded up into the machines there is not much scope on them for sound design or mangling. What do you reckon?

Yo, the midi in on the 404 is insane. I use the midi channels on my Digitakt to sequence the 404 through midi, and they are an insane combo together like that.

There's grey area. Originally you had one set of sounds, then came digital with only one set of sounds, then mods, small libraries and very basic pattern sequencers. But today, computing is so inexpensive and powerful... you have to purposely build a drum machine rather than a drum computer.
MC-707 and TR-8S are amazing instruments. Roland's interface might seem cumbersome but it's not, I'm not a menu diving kinda person but I find it really easy to use. I highly recommend them both or just the MC-707.

Here is what I have in front of me at my studio/office...........Computer keypad (tower CPU/programs}, Nord Stage 3, Elektron Rythm V1, .....and then some euro-modules and interfaces.
Thank you for this. I'm trying to create a setup to experiment with ambient/drone/trance and am struggling with how to handle percussion. Looking at Volca Drum or Microtonic plugin. If I get the Drum, i'll need to upgrade to an interface with more inputs. Right now I have a minilogue xd, studio one daw with Diva and Hive 2, and a 2i2 interface. I like the idea of building beats on the couch with the Drum but do you think its worth extra cables and complexity?

Good vid. I'd argue that the TR8s is much closer to a drum machine than computer since most of the "tweaky menu" things are very optional. You can turn it on, pick a traditional kit, and program a basic beat in a few mins. Another point is that you can learn 99% of the TRS8's features in an afternoon (vs say an Electron box's learning curve). But overall I like the vid's point of different machines for different use cases.

imo, what you mean by "Drum Computers" are called a "Groove Box" which started from MC-303 back in 1996.

Digitakt is a modern groovebox. As long as you have some good samples on your digitakt its pretty easy to get grooving. Even the stock samples r good.
I do miss my tr8 a little but I have a load of projects for the MPC 1000/2500 ready to go that act as a drum machine for sketching

You talked about the elektron workflow, mentioned how knob per function can be so convenient, but didn’t mention the model:samples.
For less than $300 you can get the elektron sequencer with TR style step entry that plays back any sample you want and is knob per function. Everybody sleeps on this machine.

I am planning to buy a yamaha reface dx and I am looking for a portable drummaschine to combine it with. I wanna jam/create Synthie-Pop, Acid House, Funk, disco, lofi filter house…everything groovy (Chromeo drums are my favs), so the drum sounds should go into those directions. The Roland 707 has the perfect sounds for me, that 80s vibe and claps are awesome. I wanna be able to lay down drum patterns easy, quick and performe with it (using FXs..) and just looping around, having fun with a drummaschine and a synth. I am not so much into modelling every beat. Should go quick in order to jam with the reface over it.
What drummaschine/gear would you recommend? Is the Roland TR-6s or the roland Tr8 with the 7x7 expansion the right choice?
What looper would you recommend to loop the reface dx and the drummaschine? Something simple. I wanna stay dawless and portable (batteries).

Sitting here with my $600 A4 mk1 . Beats for days. More often than not it's half the price of the RYTM. Alas, no samples, but it will get that instant rhythm itch scratched real quick...not to mention its capabilities in other departments.

When I wanna go deep, it's my Machinedrum or Digitakt. For ease of use I lean on the MFB522. Wanna go bonkers, use em all at once!
I have the MPC One and although I like the ability to finger-drum I miss the ability to be able to tweak the drum sounds on the fly the way I can tweak synth sounds live on hardware synths. I'm starting to seriously think about which drum machine to get.
akai released a drum synth plugin for MPCs within the latest firmware update. You can try that before buying something else =)
about one function per knob, yeah, MPCs misses the target

As always, great video. I do enjoy popping in from time to time and watching your content. As a fellow TR8 lover, I love when you praise this bit of kit.
You can use the TR8 to sequence external kit and thus be able to access a whole bunch of sounds in a sense. Can't say I've tried it yet... but I would probably stick to using the BeatStep Pro to sequence something like my old Emu ESi samplers.
Not DAWless, but SparkLE ftw...so few realize all the tricks it has it its bag. I sold my TR8. Full disclosure: often enough I use 7x7 romplers and Megababy nandy mod. I don't have any Elektron stuff -- seems not immediate enough for my tastes and also is really pricey and seems fussy. I'd rather use DAW automation to make up the functionality difference.

The Uno Drum is worth looking at Jade. I've found mine to be one of the most realistic drum machines with amazing presets.
I found that taking a simple drum machine (the Drumbrute Impact in my case) and triggering semi-random samples via midi over it can produce really cool results when messing around live.
Having the drum-machine control other gear really suits me, I found.
I never thought about the difference between a drum-machine vs drum-computer. I appreciate the simplicity of the former though. As you said, it's good to have when doing live.
I've been considering getting a old Roland SP 4o4, (based on @Jade Wii 's and a couple others' info and tutorials) as something to compliment and "go with" my Maschine Mk3 ,

I'm sorry but Tr-8 is rubbish for me, I don't like such a flat sound, I would stay with the Elektron Digitakt sampler, because of its 16 midi channels, powerfull step sequencer and 8 for audio, simply because of the FX too.

@@fasterdetail Sure, it's sample based. I'd say drum computers have more in common with drum synths. Syncussion has no sequencer, but runs rings around the average drum machine for sound design.
