I know I'd be thanking myself for doing this sort of training if I was ever in a close-quarters self-defense situation with only something like a knife (or less) to defend myself.
Considering the degree of his own skill, not one that he would feature as the main character in. Man's built himself to be the old insanely skilled mentor figure who teaches the main character an eighth of his skills before they part ways, or head off on their adventure.
I’ve been down a rabbit hole watching his videos. And I’ve noticed that, even though he has amazing bows, swords, and axes … the shields are always random household items like doors and (in this case) lids. lol. Also, before today, I had no idea that I even liked archery. The Olympic sport would be MUCH more entertaining if they had targets that were scattered throughout an obstacle course.
He just grabs a random item to represent a shield when he's making a specific point related to one. Look at that agility! Why would he NEED a shield when nothing this side of the Faewild would have a prayer of actually hitting him?!
He answered that same question not too long ago. It seems the neighbor on one side plays in his D&D campaign, and so knows him pretty well, and the neighbor on the other side works during the day and is never home when he records.
@@the-chillianGreat Britain does, in fact, have labour laws. So at least two days a week (and then for about six weeks per year at a time) the neighbour who works during the day *will* be home 😂
I feel that it is worth noting that in Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, the Yeoman is described as carrying a bow a sheaf of arrows., a sword and buckler and a dagger all well maintained, as well as a hunting horn.
@@blumineck As an archer, maybe you would prefer a target over a buckler as a small shield... So, instead of a pot lid, you could use a crushed cereal box with a cardboard handle. 😊
That is confidence in your skills, to be shooting in the direct direction of the camera! Love the slide-and-flip, though. 😸 Also, the pot lid shield is just beautiful. 😹
@blumineck Very smart! Of course, I'd expect nothing less at this point. 😸 And since you had so much fun with it, I'd love to see more slidey moves sometime. It was really neat. 😸
As someone who write fantasy all of your facts are so cool and helpful and you’re super skilled!! Love watching all your videos and it makes me want to get back into archery
I don't know if I've mentioned this in a previous video of yours, but I think it's awesome that you're left-handed. I'm also left-handed and when I was taking an archery class I was only one of two or three in the entire class that shot as a lefty. It's just cool to see more left-handed people out there. ^_^
I would personally suggest a quarterdstaff as another option for travellers who would rather avoid a fight. Lean on a staff as you travel but if you're ambushed or rushed into a melee, you can defend yourself with a weapon you already have in your hand that is also the opposite of encumbering. The bow comes in if you manage to spot a ambush ahead and take them from a distance, or if you need to return fire when you have little other means of escape. And if this sounds familiar... The traditional variation of this was with a sling and crook
I'm partial to a good quarterstaff or spear myself. Very light, good range, good with agility. You aren't taking down anyone in heavy armour very quickly, but good for keeping people at range until allies can help and can demolish unarmored foes.
my d&d character who is an archer before anything, used to use a longsword in melee combat, but would solely stab instead of hack n slash. would throw my bow in my offhand, sword in the other. eventually switched to a magical quarterstaff for more bonuses
Notice how option 3 featured a horse in the drawings. That's because it's just not feasible for an archer to carry a war bow AND a polearm by themselves and still be mobile enough to not just be heavy infantry with a bow.
We need more barbarian archer content. Both from you and in general lol. I wanna see a Goliath over-drawing a 250 lbs warbow and launching small fletched throwing javelins. Like a mobile ballista.
As the release of Dragon's Dogma 2 draws closer, I feel all the more delighted seeing these videos since I adore the bows in that game! Gonna start my first character as an archer in fact!
I met you once before years and years back and I'm so glad at how much more cooler you've become. Even though I thought you was cool already. Literally wish I could be trained by you.
Yo, that bow horseman image is SO COOL LOOKING. Ima try and search it up and draw it. I really like your vids for drawing material. Your an inspiration dude!
It depends on how fancy you want to get. A beginner recurve can be ~$150 and as they go up in quality the price jumps up as well. My compound was about $400, not counting arrows or accessories In USD btw
I must note that your picture for a dagger was legolas but his twin blades were in fact sizeable given his height they would be approximately just at or under 22" blade length
The third one is my preferred option in Dark Souls: Bastard Sword or bigger as a main weapon, and a longbow to take out ranged enemies or split up groups.
This is why most of my ttrpg archer characters also carries a longspear or similar. Spears can be wielded effectively even if you don't spend many hours daily training with them unlike swords, and it gives a reach advantage and potentially a set mechanic to stop charges and allow escape.

Better a pot lid than any of the actual weapons on his person?😄
A shield of maximum durability 😄
It has reflect damage stats, it's op.
just as op as the frying pan in PUBG
