“So I could be the boy you couldn't be
Have the father you didn't get to see” made me tear up instantly in the car yesterday. Never has a song just made my eyes well up so quickly and unexpectedly. My god this is such a good song.

Heard this for the first time in 2008 and 16 years later I've made up my made: this is the best song ever made. The rawness, anger, vulnerability. Unmatched.

I wish the mainstream could understand this because holy shit, the lyrics.
"So I could be the boy you couldn't be.
Have the father you did not get to see.
Have the youth you did not get to live.
Or feel the love this world forgot to give."

What's with the top comments being about drinking? This song is about pain, memories and Pat's alcoholic father. It's messed up the top comments are about getting wasted. This song is serious, and is full of emotion, and truth. Seeing comments like that make me sad. I'm 16 and straight edge, not cause i can't drink yet, but because there is no need. There has been times when i was offered a drink or two, or to get high with my friends. But this band means so much to me. Stay true. To your self.

      Did you ever break edge?

    • @JIGRON
      @JIGRON 3 місяці тому +2

@@mashpotatosauce3566 Nope, still straight edge at 29. I think the concept of 'breaking edge' is cringe now though. A lot of edge bands i used to like back in the day now seem pretty fascist and weird. Have Heart has always been consistent though, and Pat's opinion on straight edge individualism is pretty much what i prescribe to today. I think the best edge bands direct their anger at capitalism, society, and other evils, rather than spread hate within the scene they often claim they'd die to protect.

    • @mashpotatosauce3566

@@JIGRON Ah, well I only ask cause I'm 17 and consider myself "edge", not a huge label guy but I don't really dig alcohol and drugs for a lot of the reasons you laid out in your original comment, and for a few more personal reasons. Though ironically the only edge band I listen to is Have Heart lol. So I was curious to hear how things turned out for you. I largely agree with you and its cool to hear you're still kicking. All the best.

@@mashpotatosauce3566 Oh sick, it's cool to hear that kids are still getting into straight edge and are aware of Have Heart. Some other good straight edge bands you might wanna check out: One Step Closer, Anklebiter, No Cure, xServitudex, Inclination, DARE, Anxious, Minority Unit, TORSO, Big Laugh, to name a few of my favorites... Anyway, hope that in 12 years you're still straight edge too. But even if you aren't it's all good👍 And search around for some local punk shows! Good way to meet some like-minded homies

Being straight edge does not just apply to drinking. But i know the effects of drinking all too well... And there's nothing wrong with wanting to BELONG to something. I like to keep Straight Edge it to my self, it's different for. But i'm sure as hell proud of it. And i'm going to get ink resembling parts of my life that effected me the most. Straight Edge is one of those. You don't have to get it. Just don't frown upon kids like us who think a little differently. Stay positive man!

I will forever love Have Heart, and this fucking song. I don't like the whole concept of edge, like labeling yourself because you don't do drugs. It's just called being a normal person. But if it makes someone happy, then let it be. I'm drug and alcohol free, and I'm happy with my life. Have Heart will always be my favorite band. It's such a shame such talented men had to break up. But that doesn't mean I won't listen to such meaningful music.

@EatItRAW92 I could easily be wrong. If i ever get a chance to sit down with Pat and talk to him for a little, i might know. But it's not really about that, it's about what we (Fans) get from it. He explains his(Or his dad's) story of pain, we take away what we feel from it. So it could be about his grandfather, or his dad. Either way, it's emotional and gets me every time.

Old man, I heard some things about the boy you used to be
No father, no king, just a broken old man broken by the whiskey
Too afraid to stay, too smart to not leave
Too young to be a bird who forgot to sing
And a ground that never knew the knees
Of a boy and his own tale of two cities
"sometimes a man breaks, sometimes he can't bend
When his youth is a wound time won't mend
    (never the best of times)
Sometimes a man breaks, sometimes he can't bend
At the thought of peace as something only lent
    (only the worst of mine)
Sometimes a man breaks, sometimes he can't bend
When his son is another one who won't understand…
The Irish temper, it's history's chains
And the alcoholic's stain that just won't wash away
But a seed was planted in the sod of nothingness from which you came
And flowers grew and roses bloomed
To form this garden of life you've made
And in this city you once knew as hell
Is a garden where I enjoy myself
And in this father I hardly know
Was a son who took back what the bottle stole
So I could be the boy you couldn't be
Have the father you didn't get to see
Have the youth you did not get to live
Or feel the love this world forgot to give
And for this gift I don't deserve to get
I'll make damn sure I earn this
"o' your friends say boston's beautiful
But they didn't live here, they didn't die here
    In the Hyde Park years
O' your friends say boston's beautiful
But they didn't live hard, they didn't die hard
When sons dragged out their fathers from bars
O' your friends say boston's beautiful
But they didn't dream here, they didn't scream here
    When no one hears
O' your friends say boston's beautiful
But they didn't hide here they didn't cry here
When little boys weren't allowed to shed their tears."
There just aren't enough men like you”

@zacksparrow2590 Here, check this out. In an interview ( i think a couple actually) he talked about his father being an alcoholic. He's talking about both, his grandfather ruined it for his father, they both turned out the same way, he loved his dad but he wasn't the best influence. I'm not putting words in Pat's mouth but that's what i got from this song. But each song has it's own meaning to everyone. That's what makes music so great.

Being edge isn't a fad in a lot of places, in the music scene there's only a few people who claim edge for reasons everybody who isn't edge respects. I do drink and smoke on occasion and my best friend is straight edge, he's normally the one that feels left out.

I see nothing wrong with straight edge or doing drugs or drinking. To each their own. I, myself like to smoke on occasion and drink on occasion too. Nothing wrong with that just like there's nothing wrong with abstaining. It bothers me when people who do do them insult people who don't and vice versa. Just do what ever pleases you.

@milkfred One of my good friends does lots of hard drugs. She recently was pushed to the point of suicide. Multiple times. She went through things no one should, and it was because of the poison she put into her body. I am free of these things, not completely for my self, but so i can stay strong for my friends. Being edge doesn't have to be about being "Humble or Mature" it's different for everyone, and to me it's about being strong for the ones i love.

There's nothing wrong with abstaining from alcohol and drugs, in fact, bravo! That's a mature and healthy choice to live your life. However, when it comes to the point that people choose to not just to be "Straight Edge" and belong to a "family" it becomes annoying. They act like they are better than everybody and that they are now cool because they call themselves straightedge.
