“So I could be the boy you couldn't be Have the father you didn't get to see” made me tear up instantly in the car yesterday. Never has a song just made my eyes well up so quickly and unexpectedly. My god this is such a good song.

I wish the mainstream could understand this because holy shit, the lyrics. "So I could be the boy you couldn't be. Have the father you did not get to see. Have the youth you did not get to live. Or feel the love this world forgot to give."
What's with the top comments being about drinking? This song is about pain, memories and Pat's alcoholic father. It's messed up the top comments are about getting wasted. This song is serious, and is full of emotion, and truth. Seeing comments like that make me sad. I'm 16 and straight edge, not cause i can't drink yet, but because there is no need. There has been times when i was offered a drink or two, or to get high with my friends. But this band means so much to me. Stay true. To your self.

I will forever love Have Heart, and this fucking song. I don't like the whole concept of edge, like labeling yourself because you don't do drugs. It's just called being a normal person. But if it makes someone happy, then let it be. I'm drug and alcohol free, and I'm happy with my life. Have Heart will always be my favorite band. It's such a shame such talented men had to break up. But that doesn't mean I won't listen to such meaningful music.
@pissedoffdad69 Alcohol is the ultimate demon. I lost some friends to it, and i'm not going to let it take a hold of me. When i'm 21 i'm still going to be listening to Have Heart, and i'm still going to be edge.
No, it's about Pat's grandfather. I asked Patrick about his lyrics when HH did a concert here in Hungary. But I thought as well, that it's a song about his father. Not father, but grandfather.

@MrHxCGuitar Oh no, I have my father. He wasn't always the greatest but I still love him. Every father makes mistakes, but you can't feel sorry for yourself because no matter what, there is always someone out there who is worseoff than you.
@zacksparrow2590 Here, check this out. In an interview ( i think a couple actually) he talked about his father being an alcoholic. He's talking about both, his grandfather ruined it for his father, they both turned out the same way, he loved his dad but he wasn't the best influence. I'm not putting words in Pat's mouth but that's what i got from this song. But each song has it's own meaning to everyone. That's what makes music so great.
Being edge isn't a fad in a lot of places, in the music scene there's only a few people who claim edge for reasons everybody who isn't edge respects. I do drink and smoke on occasion and my best friend is straight edge, he's normally the one that feels left out.

why is everyone so hung up on the band being straight edge.....the lyrics are not even about being edge or pushing it on you, promoting etc.....when you listen to earth crisis they remind you constantly

Sometimes a man breaks, sometimes he can't bend
When his son is another one who won't understand…
The Irish temper, it's history's chains
And the alcoholic's stain that just won't wash away
But a seed was planted in the sod of nothingness from which you came
And flowers grew and roses bloomed
To form this garden of life you've made
And in this city you once knew as hell
Is a garden where I enjoy myself
And in this father I hardly know
Was a son who took back what the bottle stole
So I could be the boy you couldn't be
