Thank you so much! A suggestion: maybe you could make a video about what you usually do when you transfer the content from the camera to the MacBook. I know it's very subjective, but it would be nice knowing how do you choose the photos you will delete and how do you organize the remaining photos.
Thank you for being direct and getting straight to the point. Followed along and got exactly what I needed. Thanks a ton! Is there a particular brand/drive size you recommend for 4K video storage?
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This video was extremely helpful since I recently bought my first Sony camera, the A7CII. Love your videos, keep up the great work, Jason!! 💯💯💯
Hey, thanks for the vid Jason!... I'm using a sony A7II and I'm transferring it to a MacBook M3 pro laptop (2023) running Sonoma 14.5. Was wondering which conversion software you'd recommend to take MTS to MOV. I'm using Editready now I think. It has a one minute limit *on the free version.
I agree, the filing of the photos vs videos is too much. So many clicks to get to the videos. And, I’m annoyed with all the XML files. Is it really that necessary to have the XML files for each video file? 🤷🏻♂️
Thank you soo much..I also have A6400 & pro 14. Not only ur videos are helpful but all links in description box are also helpful too 😄 thankx once again sir
I've been using the FTP function to send files to my NAS. Took a little bit of first-time setup, but now, as soon as I walk into wifi range (or even in the field) I can just hit a few buttons and send them over without even going over to the computer.
Wondered what those .XML files were cluttering my SD card. Thanks! Does any software look into those XML files once they are on my PC or is it up to me to open them for some reason? I use DaVinci Resolve for video editing, and for photos Affinity Photo, On1 Photo Raw, and Luminar Neo. Does the Sony a7IV use them to retrieve data or does it create them and forget them? I heard you say save them, but even though they are tiny, it is still a bit of a nuisance. I'm trying to determine my risk factor in deleting them. 😂 Thanks again.
I think the Giro data might be in those .xml files which Catalyst uses for stabilization, but I could be wrong... Otherwise you do not need them from what I can tell. I usually don't copy them off the card these days for reference.
Thanks for the video, very helpful. I just got a Sony A74 and the videos I shoot won't open on my Mac or PC. I use FCPX for videos and my old camera (A73) took videos that I could load on my external hard drive and preview them straight away. Any thoughts? Do I need to convert all my video files? Thanks again
Hi Double B I hope you find out what to do. I have the same problem and I can’t find the Answer anywhere🤯 What did you do ? Do I have to download anything on my MacBook Pro ?
Your video has been the most helpful, however, I am still not able to move the videos onto my computer into a shared file. When I look into the Private folder I am seeing a paper image and this is where the videos are stored. They open on QuickPlayer but I cannot move them from there. Help!!
Hi, nice clear video. Can I import an AVCHD file through the lead method . I have a file I can view completely on the camera but, no method of card transfer will see it to my computer. I need to be able to send this file to a recipient too. It's most annoying. Thanks in advance .👍👍
I do not have a windows machine, but I believe this is possible by registering an access point on the camera although I never tried myself, because I always have a cable or card reader available and that method is rock solid reliable for me. I found an older article here if you want o give it shot? support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/disoft/int/playmemories-home/en/operation/wifi-ilc.html It looks like you still need to use the app though, which makes it a bit of a pain to use. The Creators App is the new software, but this article references the older playmemories app...
playmemories has been discontinued, I've tried to install it both with v1.11 and 2.01 firmware, it does not detect the camera via USB, and refuses to install. My PC is connected to the camera via Wifi, but no idea how to transfer files. I will probably continue to use USB as that's faster. I see that in Imaging Edge software on PC it detects the photos taken while connected, but they load slowly. @@Jason_Hermann
@@Jason_Hermann Only I see is selecting each image via the app then to transfer it via Link to Windows. So not wha ti wanted to try. But as Sony says it impossible I won't try, bu tmighy be possible via some other software who knows. But gonna use USB-C to USB-C instead.
Hi! Do you have any issues opening up the mp4 or xavc s file types on a mac? I try to open with quiktime but just the audio plays without video. I've searched this problem online and saw that catalyst browse is an app that people recommend to solve the problem however the video is all jumpy and takes forever to load on that app. I shot in 30fps, xavc s 4k file type. I don't have final cut pro. The other option recommennded is to download the playmemories app but that was discontinued in 2020. If you have any help or recommendations I would appreciate it.
Hello, The 4k 10-bit video requires a fairly new computer to playback smoothly for the most part, because you need the latest pro codecs and the newer processor. So Catalysts browse is your best option if your computer is older and you don;'t have final cut. You can try Davinci as that has a free version. You can also record in the S as apposed to the HS for a little more compatibility, but it sounds like you are doing that already...
Great video Jason. Can you be more specific about what cable to buy in terms of what each end connector should be? I'm going from the Sony a6400 to my Macbook Pro 2021 (16" monitor).
Hi Eliot, this is the type of cable your looking for: (A6400 to New Mac Pro) - USB-C to Micro USB: geni.us/xs5aArE USB-C is the Computer side, Micro USB is the A6400 camera side...
my zv1 tells me to start usb streaming blah blah. someone help me please - i tried to change the settings to mass, map and auto and it gives me the same streaming message whenever plug the cable.
This may help others: If I plug my SD card into my Mac and import via LR it can take up to 2 or more hours to import thousands of photos (I'm a wedding photographer but I also have photos from a second shooter to import as well). If I copy from SD cards to a drive (which takes 10 minutes or so to copy)... then open LR and import from the 'drive', it takes another 10 minutes or so. For me, letting LR import the photos from the SD cards is incredibly slow when you have an extreme amount of photos.
Good to know, and yeah if you have that many photos it's probably best to just copy them over and import after the fact "keeping in location"... When importing thru Lightroom it reads all the files first, which can take a while to your point which is probably what is slowing it down for you. Thanks again for the comments and tips!! Jay

On most newer Sony cameras, can I leave it plugged into my computer, record, and then the files will just show up after they are recorded? Or will the camera not let me record while it's plugged in in this mode?
Hi Ryan, you can record videos while plugged into the computer if using tether mode via the imagine edge desktop app, but they will be recorded to the camera's memory card. You can have the camera plugged into a charger, but not connected via usb for regular file transfers while recording. You need to tether for that w/ PC Remote enabled in the camera as well which you can see here: ua-cam.com/video/KuhvEMd2ghk/v-deo.html

No, you just need a more powerful computer, and/or a video editing program that can read those 10-bit files like Final cut Pro, adobe premier, or DaVinci Resolve for example.

When I import the Raw photo files into LR - there is no preview files. LR will import the photo files but I can't see the photos before the import. I have the most up to date version of LR. This happens on my desktop iMac and my MacBook. Is this a common issue with a74 raw files?
Hey Jason, I clicked through the link supplied for the cable and it did not seem to have the transfer rate you show in the video (5A 10 GBPS) it shows 3A 480MBps. Am I missing something? I am trying to use an a7r II with an M1 MacBook
That cable linked is fine, because the A7R II can't transfer at the faster 10 GB speeds anyway. The other cable is made by Anker and is very expensive, plus you don't need it for your camera...
Ultimately yes, the camera will not write over the files. Once you have everything saved and archived if you do that sort of thing, then I would highly recommend formatting the memory card in the camera and not on the computer!
I do not have that screen at all. Mine has a Playmemories screen (which, my understanding is no longer active)and when I hit OK a screen comes up that says USB Mode Mass Storage. If I hit playback, it asks me to disconnect USB connection and switches to USB power supply??
No, but the concept is basically the same. The difference with the RX100 VII is you have a Micro USB cable as apposed to a USB-C type cable. If the cable method is not working, you can get an SD card reader like this one: amzn.to/3zStxSW

i been searching for a while now, i have a sony HDR CX110 handycam, and it has a buncha old photos that ive been dying to transfer to my macbook, but i cant find any cables that i can use to transfer it to my macbook pro, so if anyone has any idea of where to find the right cable pleaseeee help me🙏
Thank you! Do you have a video that shows how to change the name of the files to represent the camera?
I show that in my beginners guide which is still in production... You're talking about the camera name itself, or the video and photo files themselves?
@@Jason_Hermann I will checkout that video. Talking about the files so you know which camera they came from. Thanks
@@sylviastagg-giuliano6229 Yeah, you can do that and I show you in the Beginners Guide ;) Stay tuned, because I'm almost done time-stamping all the topics... It should be up within the hour!!
Do you have a new link? The Amazon link just redirects me tot heir homepage, instead of the product page.
Sorry for which link?
@@Jason_Hermann For the 10gb/s cable. The link redirects me to the Amazon website of my country, which is why it doesn't show the product that's on the US Amazon website.
I see what you mean, hmmm. Here is the link to the USA Amazon, perhaps you can star and compare and find it that way? amzn.to/3OxpAvF
@@Jason_Hermann oh wait it does work on my phone. Thanks for the link
thank you so much
is it possible to transfer videos from camera to mac over wifi? I'm trying to automate the video transfer process but can't seem to find an option.
Thanks for the video.
I am using alpha 6000 and after I cut the photo files from the SD card and paste in my folder ( using cable) I have problems. The SD card still does not have empty space and it the display screen of the camera a black screen is shown for each photo with the text: This image cannot be displayed. Do you have any idea what might cause this?
When I format the SD card the problem is solved but still I do not understand why that happens
Thanks for the help!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Usually after importing, would you delete all the files from the SD Card?
I delete the files on the SD card by formatting it using the camera only. This is the only way I do it and would recommend that method.
Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
When I import the Raw photo files into LR - there is no preview files. LR will import the photo files but I can't see the photos before the import. I have the most up to date version of LR. This happens on my desktop iMac and my MacBook. Is this a common issue with a74 raw files?
That is odd that there is no preview option? I had a preview when importing... Are you plugging the card right in or using a cable to the camera?
@@Jason_Hermann using the card to import on both my iMac and MacBook. I’ve never used the cable.
What cable did you use again
This is the good cable I have and use with my Mac: geni.us/VBGwX
Hey Jason, I clicked through the link supplied for the cable and it did not seem to have the transfer rate you show in the video (5A 10 GBPS) it shows 3A 480MBps. Am I missing something? I am trying to use an a7r II with an M1 MacBook
That cable linked is fine, because the A7R II can't transfer at the faster 10 GB speeds anyway. The other cable is made by Anker and is very expensive, plus you don't need it for your camera...
Hello,
Can you use just a hard drive external to save videos in it from the camera or does it have to be an ssd external? Will there be a difference?
Do mean like recording directly to an external solid state drive? Haaa
Do I have to delete the original videos on the SD card after, since it copied over to the SSD?
Ultimately yes, the camera will not write over the files. Once you have everything saved and archived if you do that sort of thing, then I would highly recommend formatting the memory card in the camera and not on the computer!
I do not have that screen at all. Mine has a Playmemories screen (which, my understanding is no longer active)and when I hit OK a screen comes up that says USB Mode Mass Storage. If I hit playback, it asks me to disconnect USB connection and switches to USB power supply??
Thank you.
Do you have the same info for Sony RX100vii?
No, but the concept is basically the same. The difference with the RX100 VII is you have a Micro USB cable as apposed to a USB-C type cable. If the cable method is not working, you can get an SD card reader like this one: amzn.to/3zStxSW
any benefits of using sd card reader instead of a cable ?
Not really that I can think of.
Is there an internal memory on this camera? and if so, is it possible to get the pictures off of it?
Hi Jason, i shot my first videos today but I'm having trouble downloading them to my imac. When I plug it in using the usb cable iphotos opens up as per usual I can't locate the mpg files.... the page is blank. In your tutorial I don't see anything like you have shown, just iphotos. What am I doing wrong please?
I’m having a similar issue with my videos not showing on files. Were you able to resolve your issue and if so, are you able to help me?
Can you do one for a Sony a6000 camera
Thank you... easy peasy.😊
Welcome 😊
