Thank you so much! A suggestion: maybe you could make a video about what you usually do when you transfer the content from the camera to the MacBook. I know it's very subjective, but it would be nice knowing how do you choose the photos you will delete and how do you organize the remaining photos.

I agree, the filing of the photos vs videos is too much. So many clicks to get to the videos. And, I’m annoyed with all the XML files. Is it really that necessary to have the XML files for each video file? 🤷🏻♂️

I've been using the FTP function to send files to my NAS. Took a little bit of first-time setup, but now, as soon as I walk into wifi range (or even in the field) I can just hit a few buttons and send them over without even going over to the computer.

This may help others:
If I plug my SD card into my Mac and import via LR it can take up to 2 or more hours to import thousands of photos (I'm a wedding photographer but I also have photos from a second shooter to import as well).
If I copy from SD cards to a drive (which takes 10 minutes or so to copy)... then open LR and import from the 'drive', it takes another 10 minutes or so. For me, letting LR import the photos from the SD cards is incredibly slow when you have an extreme amount of photos.
Good to know, and yeah if you have that many photos it's probably best to just copy them over and import after the fact "keeping in location"... When importing thru Lightroom it reads all the files first, which can take a while to your point which is probably what is slowing it down for you. Thanks again for the comments and tips!! Jay

Your video has been the most helpful, however, I am still not able to move the videos onto my computer into a shared file. When I look into the Private folder I am seeing a paper image and this is where the videos are stored. They open on QuickPlayer but I cannot move them from there. Help!!

It would be the same. Micro hdmi to hdmi or micro hdmi to a compatible hdmi dongle if your pc or laptop doesnt have an hdmi input

my zv1 tells me to start usb streaming blah blah. someone help me please - i tried to change the settings to mass, map and auto and it gives me the same streaming message whenever plug the cable.

Is there a solution to this annoying problem: The problem is that when I delete the images from the card - whether via cable or card reader, the camera's internal image database still thinks the image is still there, but cannot display it - error.
Yes, you don't want to delete stuff from the card via the computer. Just copy the files and then disconnect the camera. Once photos and videos are backed up Format the card using the camera only!!

No you don't have to format every time, but you should not delete photos from the card via your computer is the point I am trying to make. The database is on the card not your computer, so when you delete off the card from PC the database on card is just going to see an error. You need to delete stuff from the "camera/card combo" so the database is square with what is on the card. You can just leave the photos on your card and let them build up over time which is what I usually do for a a week or so at a clip depending... Does that make sense? All the best, Jay

No you don't have to. I usually format the memory card in the camera when it's starting to get full, so I have an extra backup of the photos just encase.

At time 4:48 you say, “You can auto import if you’re using Lightroom or iPhoto for example”. Did you notice all RAW files in your video don’t display a thumbnail in Finder? How do solve for using (displaying) RAW files from A7-IV on MacOS? And how do you get A7-IV RAW files to work in iPhoto?

The usb cable that you used, is it compatible with the Sony cyber shot rx10iii digital camera? What brand and model number is the cable?
I do not have that screen at all. Mine has a Playmemories screen (which, my understanding is no longer active)and when I hit OK a screen comes up that says USB Mode Mass Storage. If I hit playback, it asks me to disconnect USB connection and switches to USB power supply??

Wondered what those .XML files were cluttering my SD card. Thanks! Does any software look into those XML files once they are on my PC or is it up to me to open them for some reason? I use DaVinci Resolve for video editing, and for photos Affinity Photo, On1 Photo Raw, and Luminar Neo. Does the Sony a7IV use them to retrieve data or does it create them and forget them? I heard you say save them, but even though they are tiny, it is still a bit of a nuisance. I'm trying to determine my risk factor in deleting them. 😂 Thanks again.
I think the Giro data might be in those .xml files which Catalyst uses for stabilization, but I could be wrong... Otherwise you do not need them from what I can tell. I usually don't copy them off the card these days for reference.

I use FCPX for videos and my old camera (A73) took videos that I could load on my external hard drive and preview them straight away. Any thoughts? Do I need to convert all my video files? I have a Sony HDR SR11 once USB connected to my MacBook the files shown are DCIM, MSDCF, MP_ROOT, and PNV. My images are able to be seen but my videos are not showing in any of the files. How can I fix this to see my videos?

On most newer Sony cameras, can I leave it plugged into my computer, record, and then the files will just show up after they are recorded? Or will the camera not let me record while it's plugged in in this mode?
Hi Ryan, you can record videos while plugged into the computer if using tether mode via the imagine edge desktop app, but they will be recorded to the camera's memory card. You can have the camera plugged into a charger, but not connected via usb for regular file transfers while recording. You need to tether for that w/ PC Remote enabled in the camera as well which you can see here: ua-cam.com/video/KuhvEMd2ghk/v-deo.html

Interesting, I have tried Wi-Fi, SD card adapter and USB cable, all get the images over to iPad Pro but I can’t view these images in RAW, JPEG is fine. I usually edit directly in Photo or Darkroom app the result is the same, can’t view RAW.
The iPad is not supporting the raw files yet would be my guess. This is very common with newer cameras as software updates need to happen to accommodate the newer raw files...

Bro I’m having the same problem. The only fix I found was transferring them directly Lightroom. I agree that this is only happening with the raw files. Only problem is that I’m now not able to transfer them to my external ssd. Please let me know if you have found a fix to this.

Hi I have a sony alpha nex 7 camera and a Dell with MicroSoft 11. It has just 2 ports, neither of which I can put an SD Card in. Any suggestions what I need to get in order to transfer pictures from my 64 gb SD cards from camera to computer? When I import the Raw photo files into LR - there is no preview files. LR will import the photo files but I can't see the photos before the import. I have the most up to date version of LR. This happens on my desktop iMac and my MacBook. Is this a common issue with a74 raw files?
That is odd that there is no preview option? I had a preview when importing... Are you plugging the card right in or using a cable to the camera?

Glad I found this video. I’m having some trouble.. I recorded a bunch of footage on my a7c and when I go to upload the mp4s on my Mac, all the footage looks super noisy… not sure what I’m doing wrong because it looks very clear when I play back on the A7C. Any advice? Thank you!!
Sounds like the ISO was very high if the footage is noisy like that. Have you tried recording some outside in good light? What settings are you using?
Is there a sandisk reader/hard drive for MAC? I am traveling and hoping to back my photos up to multiple places. I have been reading that many of these drives need to be formatted for MAC which is not intuitive. TIA

I have a half Gariz cover on the camera now and so each time i need to check the footage i have to unscrew the cover to remove the SD card. I have a Sony Alpha 5100, and until a bit ago I could transfer everything to my MacBook Air, but since I updated the MacBook to Monterey 12.4, for some reason I cannot see the videos I have taken with the camera on the laptop. Like they don't exits. I have been able to upload all the pics thanks to your video but I can't seem to find the videos anywhere... Anyone knows what to do?

@@carinatss YES! It took me a while but I found it. You need to go to video settings and switch the recording format from XAVC S to AVCHD or MP4. Apparently the XAVC S, which is super high quality, doesn't let you download the videos on the Mac... I personally chose the AVCHD over MP4. Once you have switched it, all the videos you record will work with you Mac. Not the old ones tho...
Usually after importing, would you delete all the files from the SD Card?
I delete the files on the SD card by formatting it using the camera only. This is the only way I do it and would recommend that method.
What’s the difference between MSC and MTP??
Great question! MTP turns the camera into a mass storage device and MSC turns the camera into a media device.. 🤕 HELP! I was making a video for UA-cam yesterday and none of the clips that I’ve shot with A7lV opened on my IMac 🤔Quick player doesn’t open them, Davinci Resolve doesn’t recognise them. The ones I shot with A7lll and ZVE10 no problem, just the ones from the A7lV. Anyone any ideas ?

@@blackmangopodcast I literally just started using an A7sIII today and had the same problem. My Fujifilm camera imports them right into Apple Photos along with still photos. But with the A7sIII, the camera saves video files into a separate directory on the memory card. Open the card on your computer and look for PRIVATE > CLIPS
This is something that so far I don’t like about Sony. It’s super convenient to be able to have Photos open and import videos at the same time as photos.

Videos get saved to a different location in the folder structure on Sony cameras. Try checking here on the memory card in PRIVATE> M4ROOT> CLIP

Thnak you for your helpful video. I tried to paste some of videos and photos rom my camera to the computer and then deleted the files from the camera folder so that I would have more space in my camera sd card. . but after I deleted those files, I could see many files in the album in the camera had a error message "Unable to disply" I don't know what to do😣 I thought It was gonna be gone clearly from the sd card. but still looks messy because of all the error messages.
And I’m also wondering why there are 2 M4ROOT file under PRIVATE folder.
One is under PRIVATE>M4ROOT. In this file, there are just few videos. And the other M4ROOT is in the PRIVATE>SONY > all the videos are here.
What should I use to access to my all the videos in the sd card?
I have a problem by doing this... My application Photo do not recognise my external storage so i can't see pictures in an other way than watching they one by one. Is there a solution?
Hmm, that is interesting. In that case you would need to get a more advanced program like Adobe Lightroom, or Capture One for example.
I just bought the A7Iv and the files are not opening in any software, only Sony's, how did you open them in your lightroom?
I pay for the Adobe subscription, so Lightroom updates often. You require an update it sounds like Rodrigo...
