So true! He did an amazing job with the soundtrack for Uzumaki. Some tracks were genuinely so effective and powerful that they legitimately made my heart race when I heard them. The voice actors did great too, along with the english dub cast. They just got absolutely screwed with the animation after episode 1, and it’s just such an absolute shame.
Yeah I hear people complain about the animation but the biggest problem was the pacing it was 100kph of speed. The adaptation throws so many things at you while skipping so manu things in the manga. The animation wasn't even that bad for episodes 2,3 & 4. The problem is that episode 1 set the bar insanely high. The animation for episode 1 was just breathtaking that the decline was so noticeable
Yeah I think they tried too hard to cramp as many stories as possibile into just 4 eps and it backfired hard. It would be fine to cut some for consistency of ep 1.
Yeahh I only understood what was going on some of the time because I had just finished the book like 2 days before the first episode (Didn't even realize it was being made into a show til that day lol). The only thing I really truly hated was the spiral hair plotline in episode 2. It just felt so weird for Kirie's hair to just be like that while all these other plotlines are going on. And then the jealous attention seeking friend that also gets spiral hair just feels so random, they didn't really do much to hint that girl wanted attention. Also, I was a bit disappointed that they crammed in so much stuff, but then didn't include the 3 tornado kids that were tied up when the reporter first gets into town. Instead they just skip to the Butterfly gang, it did help with the pacing of things tho. Other than that tho I liked it overall. I feel like they did the best they could with the amount of episodes they could make, the first episode was just so good that the rest of the shows flaws were amplified because of it
Original Neon Genesis Evangelion vibes from Uzumaki. Great story, great beginning, having to compromise the ending for budget. Hopefully we'll get "rebuild" style Uzumaki.
@@ecnav5179why are you surprised? Uncles are more likely to understand trends than anyone else these days. At least one’s similar in age to me. We were there in the early 2000s with peak cartoons. And seeing the trend from then on. Where a lot of shows fly high on the first episode but crash and burn with high expectations not met.
It was pretty obvious what was happening from episode 1. I mean, I've always been pretty good at figuring things out, but this really wasn't that complicated. It effectively boils down to, "There is a spiral curse in this town: Here are the events that transpired." I could be wrong, but I thought it was fine.
It seems that hasty decisions, budget constraints, or a mere lack of vision undermine the dual objectives of doing justice to the storyline and enthralling the audience.
It was budget constraint, from what I know back in 2018 the director was promised all the money, staff and anything they wanted to make a good Anime, then covid came so that limited the work force, then on top of that toonami did not wanted to give them more money to make it so they kept delaying the release like 2 o 3 times, at the end it took them 5 years to make that first episode that is why that one is the best, so for the rest... Toonami wanted to air the Anime like today, so the Anime team did what they could in like a month and they produce ep 2 & 3, apparently for ep 4 they got a little bit of money and the team from ep 1 came back (although not at full force) so it's expected to be better than 2 & 3 The production was so bad that the director for the entire Anime (the one who worked in the ep 1) finish that episode and dropped the Anime, he didn't even wanted to be credited, that's how bad it ended
Hopefully for the blu-ray release Uzamaki can have some animation clean up to make 2-4 nicer. But I’ve also don’t think much can be improved enough to make it worth rewatching
The Uzumaki anime's wasted potential hurts even more due to the fact that many thought that this would be the one Junji Ito anime adaptation to do a good job. After two other anime shows that did not do well, we thought this one would break the curse. When I saw episode 1, I was so hopeful, but then episode 2 aired. The animation for episode 2 reminded me of the animation for the anime adaptation of Junji Ito stories that came out years ago that most people did not like. It's like whoever did the animation for that anime did episode 2 and put a black and white filter over it. And episode 2 is where I really started to feel the fast pacing of the show. Its fast pace lessens the impact when we see the horrifying conclusion to a particular storyline. What truly messed things up is only having four episodes. That forces them to rush things. Ideally, each episode should have been focused on one storyline, two at the most.
Somewhat correlated, but I remember a corridor crew video where they basically explained that vfx(in this case the animation) in shows arent bad, but rushed. The poor outcome of the show isn't necessarily the fault of the animators or the production crew, but the business men with dollar signs in their eyes.
@@soulreaver6546 I don't think it's impossible, it's just really hard to get right, and that goes for both Junji Ito's and Kentaro Miura's work. Episode 1 showed us that it can be done, but they lost a good portion of their staff. If they had kept the same team for all 4 episodes, it probably wouldn't have turned out this bad.
The 2016 Berserk adaptation was actually very accurate to the manga, it’s just clunky, with terrible sounds for his sword, and the main reason it falls flat is the manga used perspective a lot which doesn’t work with 3D models as well
4:17 think doing 1 episode might of worked out better for them. May not have gotten the other episodes out this year but probably could’ve pushed for some bargaining chips to get the original animation team back or allow them to get other decent animators. Episode could of been called a special and continued on later.
People have to give Mappa some more credit for the ridiculous amount of shit they are working on and how hard those animators work to keep the quality as consistent as possible.
@@Brolys-dripit’s animation is made poorly. It has lots of scenes that can literally be made in a slideshow, no joke. It’s still a decent show, just lacklustre in some places.
The disparity between the first episodes and the subsequent ones is disappointing. I do hope that Adult Swim learns from this and ensures the consistent quality of their future anime productions.
i’m glad they released all the episodes, since it shows that the animators truly had the skills to make it a masterpiece but it didnt work out due to unforeseen circumstances
No, just pushing them out is always a mistake. If you can't meet the deadline, delay it. Play something else in its slot, then come back starting from the top. The sheer hype of the first episode would've made people excited for its return. Obviously, that's not the animator's choice, but executives ruining art with financial decisions is a tale as old as time. What's ironic is that they could make way more money LONG-TERM if they prioritized quality. What's sad is that this is just what the show is now. They'll probably never adapt it again in the foreseeable future. Edit: "They made us wait 5 years." No, they didn't. The executives did. It was announced that they had to rework the entire series, and I suspect that they actually scrapped it multiple times given how many different studios (not animation studios) kept getting added to the mix, so no, they didn't animate for 5 years straight and end up like this. Yes, a bunch of that time was wasted, but they finally found a direction that worked and just needed a bit more time to actually animate that direction it took so long to arrive at. The "rushing" I'm referring to is that, given tangible results before their eyes for the quality and critical acclaim of Ep. 1, executives shouldn't even consider cancelling. I'd rather take more delays than ruin the chance at a proper adaptation indefinitely. "That's not how the industry works." That's literally part of the problem I'm talking about.
The production for it started pre covid, it was supposed to come out more than a year ago and it was already postponed twice. It is worth considering that an anime with a good production schedule doesn't have more than one year of production, so this is not at all a matter of rushing
@@luceafarul5740 They have the talent, couldn't schedule the work right, and put it out like this. That's rushing. Animators are always overworked and underpaid for many projects at the same time. Like Dragon Ball Super, I think many scenes were drawn by junior animators who lacked the experience to handle such crucial shots and shouldn't have been assigned to sequences like this. That's not to say that the studio lacks the talent or skill. There are different levels of animators in a studio meant to develop their skills on certain elements for sometimes years before moving onto more complex elements.
@@LorenzoDoesntExist that's not rushing. If in 4-5 years they couldn't make things work for a 4 episode snime, then it isn't s matter of rushing but of internal politics and planning. Giving more time in these kind of situations won't help that much
@@LorenzoDoesntExist If Demarco, who is the Senior Vice President, Head of Anime and Action Series at Adult Swim can't say who made the decision that lead to this happening, then it's studio execs pulling funding. You have no choice at that point. You either put it out as is or throw it out. There is no decision to rush it or not at that point. At that point the decision is "Do we allow the public to see this or do we never let it see the light of day?"
I think not finishing it would’ve been a better call, Hollywood will always go back and seek old missed opportunities, but they’re very hesitant to remake or redo failed or disappointing projects. I’d rather wait another decade for a revival than for the show to be put eternally to rest with a half assed animation budget.
Lots of ppl who won’t be here in a decade. While it wasnt done well at least the story got out to some ppl who wouldn’t have been able to experience it otherwise.
Budget is very rarely the cause for bad animation quality. It’s usually time/scheduling and Human Resources. Most anime have comparable budgets. Ninja kamui’s action scenes were primarily being animated by a single man known as Sunghoo park, who was responsible for the action direction of Jujutsu Kaisen season 1. Yes, pretty much just one guy animated all the good stuff. It was a studio founded by him.
I'm gonna be honest-if you're faced with the choice of putting out something that has great potential but you know is half-assed, vs. shelving the whole thing and waiting for some time in the future to let it reach its true potential, always pick the latter. Sure, it sucks to see all that hard work go to waste for the people who worked on it, but when you release something shoddy, it kills any future hype for it. People have already been exposed to the story that was supposedly amazing and were underwhelmed by it, so they don't care anymore. But keep it under wraps, and the demand for SOME adaptation of it will continue to build, and hopefully your work will get picked up by another studio more willing to get the job done properly.
The only reason I think, in the case of Uzumaki, that this isn’t the better choice is because of the current track record at Warner Bros and their subsidiaries. If you shelve it, it’s probably never coming back off the shelf. They’re out there yeeting entire completed animated works into the fire to never see the light of day, so all that amazing work on episode 1 probably would have gotten the same treatment
Lazarus already has all the episodes completed with watanabe giving his approval for them. Moreover it has "respectable" people involved such as mappa for studio, masato matsunaga as producer, shinchiro watanabe as director, chad stahelski as action director, etc. Even at their worst each of these gives a decent product so it has zero chance to flop
Yea I'm starting to notice that. Apparently he adapted other junji ito works that became sub par. The long dreamer is one of the better ones but still these stories are way better than what they're made out to be
Jason DeMarco has been sucking for years at doing things the programming decisions for Toonami not have been terrible. Toonami not supposed to be an anime block. It’s supposed to be an action pack block and it’s not supposed to have subtitles in it. It’s supposed to be a dub block which he even said years ago that would only be a dub block. Jason DeMarco has completely lost the touch on how the block should work. he brings in rerun shows that I’ve already aired on streaming services when he should be bringing shows in that our premier shows that no one has seen yet and fails to bring that stuff in been an ongoing issue for aleast 5 years.
This is absolutely fucking disgusting. Junji Ito is literally one of the most famous artist of all time, and they keep shitting on him at every turn. They have genuine horror gold on their hands, the holy mecca of fear....and nope, just turn it to shit for no reason.
Its not that bad, and the 3rd episode is much better than the 2nd. Go watch the Junji Ito collection and you will see what a bad Ito adaptation looks like.
UA-cam anime channel Mother's Basement has an old video about why horror often falls flat in the anime format, he talks about how Junji Ito's art is so detailed and textured, and how difficult and labor-intensive it is to maintain that quality level at ~18 frames a second for over an hour.
@@WBWhiting super-eye patch wolf also has a video on the first Ito adaptation and why it doesnt work. A lot has to do with pacing and the "page turn". Turning the page to reveal some horrible detailed art never translated to the anime
It literally wasn't for no reason lmao it's not like they threw away a great show for fun. The animation studio had to be changed after the first episode.
7:55 Yeah I agree, Adult Swim is really trying to change by being more creative, especially now with the announcement of Lazarus adapt by the same creator of Cowboys Bebop. But, I definitely think that slacking off is bad in general, not just in the process of transition. Remember, we got a jpeg falling in an anime (that's right no animation in an ANIME) that took 5 years.
I don’t think the animation issues were on Adult Swim and more the fault of I.G USA. Shortly after it was announced, Covid happened and then they were scrambling to put it back together, and then the funding issues happened, so by the time we got the project, it was kinda trash.
@@broksamson So wouldn't it make sense to just cancel or suspend the project? Many studios did just that and after everything started getting normal, many projects got picked up and released. Also, I don't think animators are required that they must work physically at the studios, many studios who didn't cancel or suspend, simply allowed the animators to work from home.
@@lalo_lol001 The producers had the choice to cancel it or finish it, and they decided to finish it to respect the hard work of the animators. Some animation studios allow the animators to work from home but the whole thing is a logistical nightmare for studios that aren’t equipped for it, like having all the equipment available to every animator and software that allows that sort of collaboration.
@@broksamson I get it that animators work hard, I'm not judging them, I'm judging whoever was supervising and the ones who decided to carry on with the project even if it was during a difficult period of time, after realizing that it can impact the overall quality of the final product.

@@hert2458yeah, I’m just paranoid about it since I’m in the industry as an intern as a character designer. I just think companies might find an away to make it into a possibility. That and using a lot more use of Overseas production for cheap labor
I don’t see ai replacing animators any time soon, even if it were to get good enough ai has a pretty bad image, if shows come out to have ai generated stuff in them they will most likely be shunned, also the tech isn’t evolving as fast as one or two years ago so I think we are safe for now
I really wish these gaming, animation studios would learn the lesson that’s been beat across the entertainment industries head for decades but far more forcefully now. Either dedicate the required resources, manpower and work hours needed to see a project to actual completion or dump it. Consistently vomiting out partially completed projects that just get rushed to the finish line so they can rush out their next half ass project is getting incredibly old. I don’t even buy games when they first release anymore. I don’t start new animes or tv shows until it has has a full month or two to either delight or disappoint. I haven’t gone to a movie theater since like 2013. I’m just not giving these people my viewer hours, playtime or my money until it’s been vetted by millions of other people already. Honestly, I
They should have made the decision to just leave it incomplete. Better to leave it with an aura of "what could have been" instead of butchering the whole thing.
Agreed. Leaving something on the highest note is better than destroying its potential. But money hungry studios don’t understand that. However I don’t believe that’s the case here. It’s just an unfortunate consequence of poor management.
Absolutely this. If it had remained unfinished due to production woes there'd always be fans and hope for a revival or a new version done properly. Instead, they finished it and released it and it was absolute trash, so now there will not be any more attempts at adapting it again or doing it right. Finishing and releasing it was the worst possible option. Sometimes, things people put time and effort into fail. It doesn't mean release it anyway and unleash the generic trash on the world. Just bury it as a failure and move on
I really can't see why people are mad. I liked it a lot. Way better than anything Marvel has made the past 10 years. I'm not trolling either, I really don't see what the problem with Uzumaki was. It was a weird anime with a cool premise, executed pretty well. Solid 8 or 9. Maybe it is because I didn't read the manga, and I also could've overlooked problems simply because it was weird, idk.
After watching the incredible recent movie adaptation of Look Back in theaters, it really made me realize how incredible Uzumaki could have been in a movie format and given time to make the entire thing have episode 1's quality. Walking out of a theater with that full experience would be unforgettable
The history of anime is littered with wasted potential. Season 2 of the Promised Neverland, Wonder Egg Priority, Tokyo Ghoul second season. The list goes on, so this isnt unexpected but really disappointing.
This is why I read the manga first, if the anime doesn’t pan out, at least I’ve already experienced the story and i can just appreciate the characters coming to life
I feel they should’ve waited for uzamaki to put out the next episodes, release the first one and publicly state what went wrong and why it can’t be continued, and maybe people who really like the first episode would fund the later episodes. Cause once you put out a bad episode there’s no take backs
3:59 Hard disagree. If they did just the first episode the reactions from it would give them the credibility they need to buy more time with adult swim. They could've taken their time finishing the rest of it if they played their cards right. As is, it's a stain on the legacy.
When Uzumaki ended, my reaction was basically the gif of that kid looking up from the computer and giving a thumbs up. It wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t exactly good either. Just “Hmm interesting”🤣
I fully blame adult swim. This show was announced years and years ago and for 4 fucking episodes they were still on some fucked up deadline to get it out and couldn’t meet the standards. It makes no logical sense how this was allowed to happen and why the upper execs didn’t let this breathe like it needed to. This was announced like 6 years ago at least

I feel like they did the best they could with the amount of episodes they could make, the first episode was just so good that the rest of the shows flaws were amplified because of it
The manga was a bit disjointed as well.
Original Neon Genesis Evangelion vibes from Uzumaki. Great story, great beginning, having to compromise the ending for budget. Hopefully we'll get "rebuild" style Uzumaki.

It was pretty obvious what was happening from episode 1. I mean, I've always been pretty good at figuring things out, but this really wasn't that complicated. It effectively boils down to, "There is a spiral curse in this town: Here are the events that transpired."

Toonami wanted to air the Anime like today, so the Anime team did what they could in like a month and they produce ep 2 & 3, apparently for ep 4 they got a little bit of money and the team from ep 1 came back (although not at full force) so it's expected to be better than 2 & 3
The production was so bad that the director for the entire Anime (the one who worked in the ep 1) finish that episode and dropped the Anime, he didn't even wanted to be credited, that's how bad it ended

Junji Ito’s works are doomed to end up like Berserk 2016 forever, aren’t they?😢
It's impossible to adapt his stuff
All of them are produced by the same person, clearly something is wrong with him.

Giving more time in these kind of situations won't help that much
They made us wait 5 years
@@LorenzoDoesntExist If Demarco, who is the Senior Vice President, Head of Anime and Action Series at Adult Swim can't say who made the decision that lead to this happening, then it's studio execs pulling funding.

5:23 serves right 😂😂
1:26 that’s how Kingdom of Ruin started
the studio that did the anime has a history of fumbling good concepts bc the manga is good.
"Late is just for a little while. Suck is forever"

@@averyeml At this point, I'm truly surprised that anybody in this industry would willingly work at Warner Bros.

He has a post production credit for Lazarus......I can't tell if that's good or bad if that's the case.

@@WBWhiting then they shouldn't bother making it in the first place. do it right or don't do it at all.

If it were incomplete it would probably never see the light of day
If it were released incomplete fan reception could have in an edge-case revived it with some proper funding
Absolutely this. If it had remained unfinished due to production woes there'd always be fans and hope for a revival or a new version done properly. Instead, they finished it and released it and it was absolute trash, so now there will not be any more attempts at adapting it again or doing it right.
