MTB to Gravel: Does it work?

  • This is my budget project bike during the covid lockdown. Converting my 2013 Commencal El Camino 26' to a 27.5 Gravel bike.
Most of the parts convertion was straight forward.
The only challenge was to get the cable pull ratio between brifters and mtb derailleur (10 speed) to work. A Tanpan or Shiftmate would of made life easier but its too expensive.
    Hope you enjoy this edit...

VERY nice. I did a similar conversion about a year ago - only I stayed with the 3X front ring and was able to find brifters for it! The key was sticking with the cable actuated disc brakes.

Nice bike! I also just did a dropped bar MTB, but with suspension fork and XC tires. It was definitely a fun bike to ride...having my bad idea realized. Who cares? as long as you have fun, right? Riding dropped bar on the gnarly trail makes you look like a boss. Keep up good work and stay gnarly ;)

If youre planning on going on this type of build. Theres a few problems that you might be trade off for you.
First, if you put the same size fork ie; 26er fork on 2er frame, bottom bracket shell would be much lower. Also means higher chances of pedal touching the ground.
There isnt much road type shifters that would fit your mtb drive trains but its posible yet it has its own issues. So i suggest stick to the flat bars.
If you want to put larger tyres on it in an attempt to make the bottom bracket higher, there wont be much of a clearance on your rear wheels.
I built mine just as the same. And im pretty satisfide on it. Theres a lot of issues but it works just fine, but i suggest you get a roadie if you really need one.

Yeah man.. Agreed.. Converted to 27.5 and lovin it.. Shifting ain't great but i can live with it for now, maybe later on change to a corner bar and go back to the mtb shifter.. and I do miss my hydraulic brakes.. But for now i'm enjoying the drop bar..

With a couple of oddball exceptions Shimano road and mountain rear derailleurs all have the same cable pull, the fly in the ointment is the front. Different cable pull between road and MTB plus different seat tube angles make it tough finding an FD to work with an indexed road front shifter. I did a drop bar conversion on an '88 Karakoram with a 3X8 using Sunrace brifters and Shimano 105 road derailleurs. The 105 was for a tube angle close enough to my GT that it worked, it works great in fact. Of course if you switch to a 1X front then all you need is an RD with enough range for your rear cassette. I'm running 175mm crank arms and 26 X 2.1 tires, pedal strike has never been an issue for me.

Once I got the road shifters, I was gonna move the SLX onto an older MTB that has SRAM ten speed. Then decided, hell, just do it now, put the SRAM 10 speed on the new gravel build, and then I won't have to worry about getting a Shiftmate or Tanpan to make the cable pull work. Just need to get a set of SRAM ten speed road levers. Probably use an old road stem and bars I have for now(it's a threaded steerer), until I decide whether I want to use a threadless adapter and 31.8 bar and stem. Probably will have to, just to get a short enough stem.

After about 3 years the last Keurig stopped working ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf initially was able to unblock, however eventually we couldn't fix. That one was a replacement unit sent by the manufacturer after we had problems with our very first Keurig. This works fine (lol, at least for now) however I didn't realize the water reservoir was so much smaller than our prior unit. With 2 people having one or two cups of coffee each morning, it seems like I'm refilling it daily. Otherwise just happy to have the convenience of pod coffee vs. making a morning pot.

Ok for bike enthusiasts. But, for what purpose? Sure, it shares a RB's drop bar handle look but it won't keep up with a RB's speed given the same 1x drivetrain set-up. (Pwd rin -- drawing lang :) ) Alternatively. I'd leave my MTB set-up as it is and get meself another bike -- a gravel bike or, should I say, a RB with the typical 2x set-up but with chunkier 700x35c tyres.
