Good video. I like that you don't talk through most of it. Makes for simply enjoying watching you do you work. I'd say fixing up old beat down bikes to breath new life into them and either using it yourself or selling it (even you don't *make* any money off of it compared to what you put in) puts some good out into the world.

Nice ride! I did the same thing with my 2010 Scott Scale 29er hardtail.
-Stand Crest ZTR wheels with Vitorria Mezcal tires with Stans sealant.
-Salsa cow chipper drop bars
-Shimano 105 shifter coupled to a Tan Pan to keep shift ratios to an XT derailleur connected to an 11x52 cluster and a single Wolf tooth 32 upfront.
-The front brake is a hydraulic TRP brake to compliment the hydraulic 105 shifter/brake.
I ride this more than my road bike and mountain bike combined as it is so versatile.

Good inspiration for the bikes piling up on the side of my house. Before I bought my new road bike. I had converted my old 2005ish Trek 3700 into a road bike. I put skinnies and all on it. It rides awesome. I wanted to take it further and fully convert it to a road bike (drop bars, swap all gears, etc) but it was an older model with freewheel, and for the money I was looking to spend, I just decided to put that into a really nice used road bike off FB Market instead. I love budget build bike projects and have quite a few in my garage waiting on parts so I can upgrade/sell/giveaway :) Also, I LOVE your parts washer, I had to find it online and get one! :D

Very nice build! I rebuilt my 2001 Hawk Hill to a drop bar gravel bike. Didn’t have disk brake tabs so I had to go old school with cantilever brakes. My frame looks very similar to yours with a different paint scheme. Mine also came in around 24-25 lbs. Didn’t know that Marin couldn’t use the name anymore.

I went the other way, converting my "road bike" to a gravel machine. Luckily it was originally built up on a Cannondale XS800 cross frame (with a headshock), so it took 35mm tyres. Add a Shimano Deore 11-speed 1-by drive train, a set of ancient Magura HS22 hydraulic rim brakes, a 25-year old Ti flat bar from an MTB, and a pair of classic Cannondale MTB bar ends wrapped in bar tape and hey presto, it's now a gravel bike. I wish I could fit discs for better stopping power in the wet, but you can't have everything. I don't know what it weighs, but it's fun to ride.
Re your MTB-to-Gravel conversion, I'd probably try and squeeze in 27.5 wheels, if I had them or could find a decent set second hand. With slimmer tyres than the MTB incarnation, they might fit. Worth thinking about for future mods anyway.
BTW: I've seen Shimano MT-200 brakesets for sale on AliExpress for prices similar to the Zoom brakes you found. The Zooms look like straight Shimano copies, so they may be just as reliable. But I've had good luck with Shimano gear, and parts and pads are available anywhere.

Hey Brian, Thank you for the great comment! It's fun to make a bike anything you want and its always ok as long as you enjoy the ride! There is definitely room for 27.5 wheels on this one but I was trying to keep the budget in check. Maybe in the future. Also, I have had a few MT200 brakes thru the shop and you're right the Zooms look like copies of them. I will say they do feel great and I have no complaints so far. Thanks Todd

Awesome video. I wish my 96 pine mountain had mounts for disks. I'm ok with the canti's though. I'd definitely like to convert to 1x drive train though.
I like bullhorn bars, but for old mtb rebuilds i really like how a bmx stem and bars look, while rising the height for a more comfortable ride. The fairdale bars are great. Also if you decide to go bullhorn, keeping the cable management tight is a must BUT it will mean if you decide to try out different bars in the future, you will have to get new cables.
If it's a good frame and it fits.... a great ride. Used to love doing this. I'd just add a dropper and do the bars different... and its a perfect All Roads bike.
Oh, and get new tubeless wheels and lower the pressure for a smooooth ride with great traction.

My dad converted a Bear Valley to a road bike. From 559/26" to 622/700c, drop bar, conversion V-brakes with longer adjustment holes etc. Turned out great actually, even though the BB is high and frame geometry is not really made for that, but somehow it just works a treat.
First thing to go is the dork disk, with a look of disdain. Awesome

To be fair, some of the parts probably could have been saved. I hate throwing out stuff.
I find working and restoring old bikes to be quite relaxing and rewarding while more modern stuff is generally the opposite being a frustrating chore. Your video is a good example of that.
I'd like to do something similar to my hardtail mtb to make it a little more road / gravel oriented rather than pure cross country. I'm not sure about ditching the fork for something rigid though. despite being a heavy component it's in perfect working order. Do you have any input on that regard?

Hi Mojo, the great thing about changing or modifying a bike for yourself is that you can do whatever you want and if you like the way it turns out, then you did it right. If you don't like it, then you can keep changing it until you it makes you happy.
Great video, love the wheel magic! Nice to give a cost breakdown, and yeah, these conversions aren't cheap! I did a similar bike for a youtube competition last year, Spindatt's trasher basher. Just adding dropper bars put on an extra €100 due mainly to combined break-gear levers! I have a similar frame waiting this year but currently can't justify the cost of buying disc break compatable front forks.

Hi Clayton, there's a link to the fork in the video description. It's aluminum, and it came with some red decals on it that I took off. I was impressed with the quality of the fork.

Didn’t seem like the cranks spin very freely. Something with the BB or preload?
Pounding the shaft in like a railroad spike might have been an indicator of a problem.
I think I may have tightened the preload a bit too much.
WHAT IS THE MEASURE OF THE RIGID FORK FROM CROWN TO AXLE?

In completing a similar build using a marin bobcat trail. Did you have any chainline issues with the 1X conversion?
Dan, In this case, I didn't have any issue. Probably because I got a new BB and single speed crankset. I think I may need to add a link or 2 to the chian because it's maxed out on the tall gear.
I did a 1x10 conversion to a 2001 Hawk Hill. I didn’t change the bottom bracket or cranks. Haven’t had any chain line issues with my build. Using an Advent X with 11-42 cassette.

Which length fork did you use on this build … was it the 27.5’s ?
I ordered the 26, but truth be told, it looks like it will take any size wheel. There's a ton of clearance above the 26-inch wheel. The link to get it is in the description.
Came out nice but I think you could have saved a couple of bucks if you used some cheap Shimano MT200 brakes, other than that good job.

It was a multipurpose fork that is good for 26 or 27.5 wheels.

It was advertised as a 26/27.5 but it seemed very long. I bet a 29/700C would fit.

Not very much like a gravel bike. Took those sort of bars off my fixie as they are useless for climbing as the controls are to far inboard.

Yeah, but you could also say it's a fat tyre road bike. At the end of the day, it's a bike. If it fills a purpose, it's a good bike. We can get all hung up on labels and categories and argue about it like pork chops, or we can build bikes, ride them and smile.
My desire to get off my butt and do some bike packing led me here. I'm soon to start converting a 26" MTB (which will fit 27.5 x 2.2 or 700 x 45c) with drop bars and a 1x11 drivetrain. Any bike that makes you keep getting out is a good bike.

That's NOT a gravel bike - the handlebars are upside down! It's just an old MTB with silly handlebars. Waste of time and money.
This is not a gravel bike. This is a fully rigid 26 inch MTB. Maybe in the future real work and geniune content could earn you some attention on youtube. This type of gravel clickbait is a bit disgusting... this is not gravel content this old piece of junk has nothing to do with gravel bikes.
Hello, sorry, I was not trying to clickbait anyone. In my opinion, when I compare it to a modern mountain bike or a flat bar gravel bike, it's attributes more closely resemble a flat bar gravel bike than a mountain bike. It's sad that you can't get into a decent gravel bike with a 1x drivetrain and disc brakes for less than 3 or 4x the price of what this bike was to make, and I was trying to show that you could have a similar experience for much less money. And quite frankly that Marin Hawk Hill was never a good mountain bike and never could be no matter what I did to it. Thank you for your comment and for watching!
@@DePuesshop great bike man! Don't listen to folks like this. I too have built my fair share of 26 inch retro gravel bikes and I can assure you. What my $1K+ gravel bike can do so can these budget builds. I'm currently riding a Marin Dual Sport 2 MTB turned gravel!
