- A man's body was recovered on Friday when a car plunged over Devil's Slide in San Mateo County, killing at least two people.
Officials say rescue efforts were called off and will resume Saturday morning. There may have been more people inside the car that is upside down and submerged in the ocean.

They called it Devil's Slide for a reason.
They call it Devil's Slide because land-slides are common that come down and over the highway and make it impassable. Cal-Trans has to come and clear it and it usually takes several days. I commuted on that road every day for over 20 years. Every time there was a slide, we'd have to go south and over to the east to get on what is now the I-5 freeway to get to downtown San Francisco. I moved away years ago and live in the mountains in another state now.
I am a local and drive this section of road all the time. After recent barriers were put up blocking almost all access points to drive a car off the cliff, a driver would have to knowingly research that stretch of road and then intentionally steer his car in a very a specific way to drive off these cliffs. It's highly probable that this was a suicide or murder+suicide and not an accident. Sadly it is becoming common on this stretch of highway. This would be the 2nd car to fly off this road in 2024 and 3rd car in last 2 years. The news and CHP will never report it as a suicide though in order to prevent copycats. Just like Caltrain recently stopped publishing train track deaths on the Peninsula as the majority of those deaths are suicides.
Yes
"The news and CHP will never report it as a suicide ..."
That was my first thought, but then I watched the video. ( 2:08 ) Never say "never".
It's also out of respect for the family members, until and unless, it can be proven beyond reasonable doubt. In a case like this, it is mere speculation sooo, nothing should be assumed. Innocent until PROVEN guilty, always!
Has anyone checked to see if they have ties to the Clinton's 😂
Yup the last time I saw something like this in the news they driver was convicted for murder

@@josephsaeteurn9158I thought of that one too.
Unless you’re a Buddhist or Hndu lmao
That is a shame. Highway One is no joke, you cannot speed and you cannot take your eyes off the road for a second. IF YOU want to view the scenery, have someone else drive because the driver has to pay attention.
@pamelawing5747 ummm yeah... well you can speed, but you just have to know how to do it.
This wasn’t even a dangerous part to race on. People text and drive over that area flip their car on the dirt then end up blocking both lanes of traffic when heading northbound. I see it every year it doesn’t even make the news. Go to tunitas creek at night or day and race with the boys. U don’t know shit about that I bet. This is a joke or intentional suicide. 😂 You hit one of those trees or cliffs on tunitas ur done. Pay attention as much as you want. You won’t memorize all the turns.
I was driving through Big Sur late one night, and a premonition told me to pull off. Good thing, too, because a car was speeding in my lane and would have pushed me off the cliff.

Ive been there...no guard rails on the entire road. Scary as hell.
There is some but yeah no guard rails at some spots with the only “blocker” is a small steep. Which doesn’t help if going fast, that rate it’s a sand rap to help fast drivers fly higher before plunging into the ocean.

When I was a kid, my family would go down that highway a lot, It was so scary, and I am still afraid of cliff edges. People would slide off frequently, you would think after 50 years that could be fixed.

@LoamReaper simply because many people drive fast, but it's always the ones that fail to stop before an accident that end up like that.

im just asking and im not sure but cant the coast guard take a boat over to get the bodies, why are they going over the cliff
Too many rocks, bit too shallow, and its right in the wave crash zone.
Any boat you try to bring in there is going to get smashed and/or capsized.
Californias coast is no joke - it has some pretty gnarly spots. This is one of them.
@@stinkyfungus the coast guard is no joke they can get there at low tide and send an inflatable to get even closer
@hermanrosario7045
Well son, if you think you know the answer why ask the question?
I told you why but ok... you know better.
The issue is the tide is High - in this spot that car would be mostly out of the water if the tide is down - alot easier to deal with.
They can get to the wreak just fine from above - we'd do this all the time, Cal fire has a WORLD CLASS high angle rescue program.
And people drive off highway 1 all the time between devils slide and Santa Cruz there are easily a DOZEN high spots where someone can come off the highway and into the drink.
Happens a couple times a year... so the authorities out there get ALOT of practice.
The issue here is:
It's too dangerous to put men on the wreak with the water level where it is (regardless if they approach from the sea, or the road above.)
I was with the San Mateo County back country search and rescue team on the peninsula - as a volunteer with Cal fire back in 98-2003.
I know devils slide all too well. I've assisted on a few high angle recovery/extrications out there, just like this one. And I know EXACTLY where this spot is
The coasties wouldn't go in there nor will the guys from pillar point.
You aren't getting a USCG RIB into that cove, and the county harbor SAR crew out of pillar point sure as shit wouldn't try to bring one of their wave runners into that soup.
The reason they had to knock off trying to recover the bodies is - even IF you could get at the wreak ocean side without getting smashed - the divers that'll need to be in the water AT the vehicle are going to get pummeled in the surge while trying to work on the vehicle. Do you surf? Or Play or work in the ocean in Northern california?
Ie: do you intimately know what the conditions of California's central and northern costs are beyond "I've seen it on TV"
Let me break this down for you:
1. The water is numbingly cold - if you need to get in the water you are in a wetsuit or dry suit...otherwise you start to go hypothermic in about an hour in the water.
2. The swell is powerful. These waves travel across the pacific, picking up momentum the whole time - this is no wind chop, the rollers pack alot of kinetic energy, you try bobbing around in the impact zone? ocean'll pick you up and slam you into whatever is nearby.
3. The rocks in these areas on the central and north coasts are COVERED with sharp biological growth. Barnacles, mussel beds, etc. Those things SHRED you - carve your wetsuit and your skin to ribbons. So when you get slammed in the washing machine - you aren't just getting beat up and bruised - you are getting cut up.
All of this boils down To TOO much risk to LIVE people (the rescue people) to recover dead ones. (The vics in the car)
Wait till the tide comes down, when its not as rough, and a crew can actually work on cutting open the car and pull the bodies.
We don't full court press recoveries... not at the risk of rescuers.
Live rescues? We'll hang it out, take risks, and do what needs be done... but the dead will still be dead in 6 hours...
@@stinkyfungus wow that was a lot of pompous rhetoric just to say the coast guard is weak and cant secure our coast line. i have a feeling you are full of yourself and i may need the opinion of a actual coast guard commander. thanks for the ted talk
So very sad.

Let’s talk about those colorful slacks.
For ppl that never travel there: there is a reason why it’s called that.
Sights is great but the road there is dangerous. A lot of twists and turns with handful near cliffs with NO RAILINGS. During raining season mudslides are high and any built up water rushes down making roads slippery. They put up digital signs to remind ppl to slowdown.
In top of rhat doesnr help tourism has increased that the parking around there fills up making ppl park next to cliffs that they are NOT SUPPOSE TO DO especially in the spots where ppl make turns.
My dad when I was a kid would tell me stories of devil slide that it got that name with devils whispering ppl to come down the cliffs leading them to their deaths.
And currently devils slide area is closed off. Meaning ppl that need to pass there for work or go home can’t. Have fo drive through 92 but today some smuck got into an accident, road slowed down heavily and ppl call in late or can’t go to work because of rhat. Worst case if both those closed off the ONLY WAY to get to say San Mateo is drive 15 mins south to San Gregorio, take la Honda road through the forests for about 45 minutes then redwood that is if there is no traffic. But there will be if ppl only exit is that so it becomes a 2-3 hour drive then 20-30 mins normal route.
Tesla gives you a better chance against the devil. Remember that Dr's family survived.

You have to be more specific. Legally 1 mph above the speed limit, it's speeding.

Never argue with who is driving
What if it wasn't an accident?
Here's whats funny. DEVILS SLIDE HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR OVER A DECADE. There is no automotive access to it anymore. It's basically a walking, biking trail that has crumbled into the sea for the most part. The tunnel and realignment of highway 1 in that area between Montara and Pacifica has changed the whole area to be much safer, yet since the closure of the slide, seems more people have gone over it than in all the years prior to its closure. Which says to me, these aren't accidents at all, these are people who know there is no access and are purposely driving off the cliff to commit suicide, just like that one guy did with his family. Just like that one family in Oregon did, with all their adopted kids in the car, just over the side of the cliff to death. It's not accidental, cause ITS FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE TO GET ONTO THE OLD ROAD!!!
not true, someone was driving within the wrong lane, i was there and no need to blame the driver when it’s already an incredibly tragic death. this is a public platform and a space where again people died.

I'm guessing that barrier that's there has no purpose. My guess is that one hill to the left of the barrier is where the car jumped over. Must have been going pretty fast as well. That turn is kinda odd as it does get a bit sharp
You'd think CalTrans would do something about putting railings to prevent more accidents from happening. I've seen this happen so many times.
I couldn’t agree more
There are barriers in the turns where an accident is likely to happen. This meathead most likely drove off the side on purpose.
You can't expect to have barriers the whole length of the highway.
They did, it's called concrete barriers, a realignment of Highway 1 and TUNNELS put in. There is no access to "Devils Slide" - meaning someone purposely commit suicide, cause you can't just drive to this part of the trails anymore.
