Hi Dave, love your content. That would be great series, you could go in next may to Tampere watch ice hockey championships and get to know Finnish hockey culture. Also you can make together video where you tasting Finnish alcohol 😀
Yeees!
This was fun, Dave. A great thing to have, the mosquitoe net. 😅🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟
Read my name.,
One really has gone native when they eat cold maksalaatikko straight out if the box
Yeah, Lapland would be a fantastic summer place if it weren't for the swarms of bloodthirsty mosquitoes.
They don't carry diseases up there in the north but they are so desperate for blood that they try to get even into your eyes, which is the way some of the bigger animals like elk & reindeer can end up dying after being blinded by the mosquito swarms.
Tip if you hear robotic humming sounds, RUN
I'm a bit allergic to flies, like for example one summer after my then girlfriends dad's mökki in Pori's island I was stung everywhere in my feet and they rose up to be like size of a cap of a corck. It was so bad since they started to bleed and all so they gave me antibiotics for it. Also I'm one of those people they seem to love, always when there is 2 on my friend it's 10 on me.
In lapland the mosquitos are craazy, they truly are desperate and no amount of sny repellent will help. Only one is good smoky camp fire. Sometimes I feel there really isn't That much but in a minute they have noticed you and now you are under a swarm of them. It's so weard that in for Example in Laos at the rain-season there really wasn't a lot of mosquitos even tho you would think they have prey, super humid and hot, there is places to nest in terms of water bodies and discarded tires and all but nah, not really much of mosquitos. Then again the ones that there are might be carrying all kinds of diseases.
@@aleksisuuronen5969 Yea those small flies are annoying there are at least couple different types.. Sometimes they can swarm quite a bit and they fly in your nose, ears, eyes and bite everywhere they can. Fortunately I'm not allergic to them so I only get small red dots as bite marks. Mosquitoes are always worst after winter but late summer their bites don't seem to itch so much anymore.
Some years ago I went to Kuusamo and there was swarms of mosquitoes and blackflies along with horseflies as big as tip of thumb. Needless to say there was not much business being outside without total cover in the middle of summer.
Holy fuck. Finally you come to the "real" Lapland. I live in Utsjoki specific to be in Karigasniemi and I'm so happy to see tourists in here after 2 years of Corona. I hope you bought somnthing or eat in a local restaurant and shops. Or used somnthing else local tourist guide or something 😍 and if you want to see cool places you should try geocaching. In Lapland I have noticed that here are less cach but they almost every time show you the most beautiful places which you never would not even consider to look or find.
Thanks for stopping briefly in Inari and sharing the views from my childhood home! I miss that place every day.
To live in the north you need a mosquito magnet to be truly free!! Northern Finland consists of about 50/50 swampland and forest. A mosquito hatches in standing water and it takes 2-3 weeks to become an adult, it can fly about 2 km from its birthplace, lives for 2-3 weeks, only takes one bloodmeal during its life. The mosquito peak is around midsummer depending on year and location and falls after that, in Finland they come mostly from melting snow.
I just turned 40 in the summer and have never gotten further north than Oulu. It would be nice to see authentic Lapland.
Northest ive ever been is the northest continental point in europe
Love how you describe your impressions of Lapland. That and soo much more is why we are moving here next year. The sääskit we will be taking gladly with it. Inari and Utsjoki are high on the list.
I really recommend a visit far north. We barely scratched the surface on our trip. Next time I want to explore west of the river!
@@davecad Awaiting the move next year we manage to come to Lapland 4 times per year for about 3-4 weeks, to our mökki i Kittilä area. But the urge to go higher up is too big. I can highly recommend a hike (with a guide) into a wilderness area, which is next level... Kaldoaivin or Käsivarren are our favorites.
Inari has a severe shortage of housing so if you are planning on moving here make sure to look way in advance!
@@MattinLapland oh we know, we check daily since a couple of months
Great video chaps!!Nice seeing you two together.
Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed it. Definitely want to do more with Luke 😄 We had a blast (at least I did with him 😂)
This was SO much fun!
Next time take the "Irish in Finland" with you. 😀
That guys a legend 🙌🏼
Please no😆🙉
🤙🏼
@@democracyalways9801 😚
I am so excited to see you and Luke together in a video again!! The way I ”ran” from ig to youtube when I saw your story of you two together in a video, loved this video ☺️
Would love to see more collaboration between the two of you!
What an awesome collab!
I was there last september. Ruska colours were awesome! And no mosquitos!
I like that you are very straight forward with your collaboration - not trying to beat around the bushes but tell straight on, what's the deal and that's that. Of course I also like the collaboration free videos, but these are just as good. Thank you for your honesty. 👌🏼
Cold Maksalaatikko would be a great name for a band.
Crossing small streams like the one you did at the return hike is easier when you just toss your bags across first with your boots and trousers tied to the bag and then just walk on the stream bottom... anything else is just opening yourself to an accident when falling into it....
What a nice collab and an amazing video once again
Wow. This hasn't happened before. I was feeling a bit down and your video picked me up. I'm not a moody person. Cool! Magic of Lapland channeled through the Anglo-Saxons :)
Hey Dave looks fantastic I love those jackets the orange one is amazing! I am gonna make it my goal to be in Finland next summer to be part of the midnight sun experience! Super excited to watch this video man! Hope your doing well dude! Nice to see you outside
Cheers Dan! I really recommend a visit far north. As a photo/video guy, there's lots of opportunity for some bangers 😃
@@davecad I made it as far north as katillia last time to visit the ice hotel! I wish I was vlogging then I can’t believe how beautiful Finland is! I’m off to Spain for a couple of months on Thursday next week! Hoping to get a lot of new videos out!
Amazing vid! made me feel really good =) love from Sweden.
Wonderful adventure guys. Great video👍
As a laplander, thx for vid, was cool.
Finland is the place for me
I am so happy as smitten you are with Lapland, but... Finnish Lapland is a place like no other - you may want to hear, see, taste and smell it... but here's the thing. And take this from a laplandish person - Lapland may give you their taste, sight and feel... but only if you take the spirit of the wilderness in you, yýou will feel Finnish lapland.
Why? Why would You go there during summer? Madness! Mäkäräiset on helvetistä! 😄😉
Honestly, when I booked it, I totally forgot about the mosquito problem hahah when Luke reminded me we just thought it would add to the experience 😄
@@davecad 😄 Well, now You know why we spend summers in the south and winters in the north.. The midnight sun is pretty nice, but thick curtains are a must! 😄
@@davecad At least you can keep the mosquitos out with clothing. With mäkäräinen (blackfly?) the only sure way not get bit is to wear a space suit 🤣
But gosh it's beautiful up there. Have to get back... well, maybe next year.
Dave how have you been enjoying the 30°C degree weather
Melting a little 😂😂😂
Hey Dave! Been following you since we're living in UK. Also Luke is as familiar. Great stuff guys! Since I'm from Lapland, really enjoyed this video. Never commented on your vids earlier. As you can imagine as I am s finnish person😂😂
Nice video ! Very good theme!
The mosquitoes in Lapland are only slightly bigger than an old milking stool😂
@17:35 left handed lip lock. Say more. Cheers!
and that little tos @17:59, this guy fishes.
Awesome! I just went to Pyhätunturi (Pyhä fell) couple of weeks ago and I also noticed how much fresher the air is compared to Helsinki. Water quality is also better in Lapland, after a shower your skin is soft like a babies 😊
I love lapland! So right about the air there!
It's so fresh! They should learn to bottle it 😂😂
@@davecad Hello, Dave! Bottle the fresh air and export it! 😂 Well, I seem to recall that we have been exporting bottled spring water somewhere. And I definitely remember that we have been selling sand to the Sahara region or some of the desert states in that part of the world.
As your nice wife is a Swedish-speaking Finlander as I am myself, I wonder whether she has told you of the people of Hölmölä, the Hölmöläborna?
Hölmö means dumb or stupid in Finnish, and Hölmölä is a fictive place. One of the stories about the Hölmölä people tells about how they tried to bring light into their dark cabins or cottages by catching it in bags outside and releasing it indoors...
Another one is about how they tried to lengthen their blankets by cutting them off at the lower end and sewing the cutoff piece onto the top end...
By the way, you're the nicest, funniest and most positive Brit that I know. Keep up the good work! Och säg hej till din söta fru också! Och din gulliga son, Leo! (Isn't that his name?)
I hitchhiked up to Ivalo in the 80s. One of the best trips of my life. Caught fish on a small lake at a friend's cottage in Inari, smoked them. Delicious.
The next time you’re up north in Inari area, let me know and we’ll hook you up with some proper fishing spots and locals 😁
Hyvää nimipäivää Leo!
I'll pass that on, thanks 😁👍
Did you see any Blackflies? (Mäkärät in finnish) imo they are more of a menace.
Nice to see my home municipality in your video. I love living in utsjoki
Great!!!!! Kiitos
Damn, I used to watch some of your videos years ago and your really good at finnish nowadays.
"Let's hope it doesn't get much worse than this." Ah, the mosquitoes... #1 reason I'll never move back to Lapland despite growing up there. Hope you had fun despite those lil flying maniacs, though 😁
Where did you grow up? Mosquitoes are the #1 reason to spoil the goodness of Lapland.
@@jarmomoskuvaara Spoil the goodness?
@@Yoarashi ??
@@jarmomoskuvaara I don't understand what you mean by "sääsket ovat #1 syy pilata Lapin hyvyys(?)" and I don't get why you ask where I grew up when I already said that in the msg you were replying to
@@Yoarashi sorry, my answer looks little bit odd when I look at it, those sentences are backwards. I just wondered where in Lapland as Im myself from there and about the mosquitoes Im with you. Spoiling the goodness - with that I mean summertime goodness as theres more to Lapland than Santa and skiresorts 🌴🌴🌞
When we are going to see an army Dave?
Fun fact: every human in the world would fit on inari lake ice. (Hopefully thats the proper way to say it...)
Haha wow thats a great fact!
Tuning in from Lappland.
Cyclone Rescue Jacket 2.0? Just want to make sure, 'cause I've been searching a good jacket from RR and it sounds that this one is the right one for me too. 👌🏼
I visited that area couple of years ago and it's really beautiful there, if you discount the mosquitoes
do the Kevo Canyon trail - nature reserve ie you are not allowed stray away from the paths, takes ca one week, river crossings cabled over but not all
Welcome to Lapland. 🦌🎅☀️❄️#lappi #lapland #utsjoki #sodankylä #rovaniemi
Only about 3 hours from where i live. Ive been thru there sometimes
The mosquitoes seem to be more vicious this year than any previous years I can remember ( maybe I just want to forget!) camping has been tough also due to high temperatures…..
Actually they really are, because of cold and wet spring, in Finland the mosquitoes will come mostly of snow.
Did you go to Uula's Store? (Shopping center In Utsjoki)
Six weeks until I go to Helsinki for outdoor adventurey stuff ^-^
Where did you buy the fishing licenses?
Hope you will get something else than pikes also. Pikes can be found in every mudhole where is moisture. Nice video 👍
Haha I was a little disappointed to get two pikes. I had a dream of catching some trout but... maybe next time. I'd love to make a dedicated trip there for fishing!
@@davecad And trout, salmon, grayling, arctic char maybe.
Go in august / early september for less flying terror
Did the drone film you crossing the stream and stumble through the forest!!???
Looks like selfie stick
Well, I don't say anything else about those RR gear. I have not tried them and tbh they seem pretty good. BUT. There is like 2 recco search beacons in whole Finland. So if you get lost, better get lost close to either of those.
This seems like the intro for a I Shouldn't Be Alive -episode. Just kidding 😆
Next time bring mini backpack with essential survival gear when you go hiking. Or at least travel canister of clean water or one of those water filter straws.
p.s.1 Ah I need to fix my mk1 eyeballs as you seem to got some kind of backpack.
Yeah I did but we "forgot" to bring water... I say "forgot" because we never actually intended to hike as far as we did... it just kinda happened when lake-hopping 😁
Running water coming from the fells is safe to drink. It would be very bad luck to catch anything from it.
I loved the video, but please don't do heroics like balancing on a fallen tree over a stream. If you break a leg in the middle of nowhere, it's a huge mess. Find the safer way, that's like the first rule of wilderness survival.
Yes, and bring drinking water! Also actual hiking shoes protect your ancles in that kind of rocky land.
@@tiltha u can drink from any stream in lapland so just bring cup or something
I'd like to install mosquito magnets across all of Lapland to make it nice in the summer.
Nice .
You need to see jyväskylä. Lakes👍.all that rivers, lakes city, people.
Please.and your fans .take a trip.
👍
My late fathers advise: Just go to a swamp and "hakkaa halkoja" for a couple of hours without your shirt and for the rest of the summer the mosquitos do not bother you no more 😄. Never tried that one though, haha
I know 1 many places in this video i have even been there
Hey dave when are you going to upload the next video speaking only finnish👀
cold maksalaatikko.🥰
Heaven 😁
Next time, bring on a row boat or something like that, and go deeper to catch some good size fish 🤟👍
You should try eating from Papana in Inari great pitza
Whaddya mean not allowed to drive your car straight into Norway? That's what I've always done. Oops?
You can, but we had a rental car and we weren't allowed to cross any boarders with it 😊
@@davecad Ah. Phew!
Oikeasti. Luke ja Dave on kaksi äijää joiden kanssa voisin viettää iltaa
Wow, a Brit and American eating maksalaatikko 😯 Even I cannot do it…
Maksalaatikko is sooo good and I miss it!! 💙🇫🇮
Lol tried scraping the bug off the title
I was looking for a new jacket and this is it. Their shorts are about 5 cm too short though. Shorts that do not cover knees are called boxers and should not be worn in public.
Mittojen mukaan noi takit on tehty kartion muotoisille miehille. Prkl
Didn't your permit allow to fish from Utsjoki?
Not on the river, no. They're not selling Utsjoki river permits due to the salmon ban. I think locals get one but that's about it. I could be wrong, but I didnt want to risk it and break any rules. I had the Utsjoki wilderness permit which required the hiking 😂 (and then the inari wilderness permit for the way back to the airport)
Yo id love to live in finland
You went to the wrong places for fishing! Next time try going to Oulu and driving up the west
Thanks for the tip! 👍 maybe next time 🤞
A major failure to go hiking without water. What if you got lost and were not able to find water?
@misuyy fong Cool video, no doubt.
There are very few places in Finland that don't have water available. Of course it's good to have water with you but there is no risk of dying of thirst. In Lapland people don't usually carry lot of water with them but some people carry some kind of water purification method. Most just drink straight from the streams though.
A goddamn brit got there before me. And I've lived in Finland my whole life!
They should have a sign "No foreigners allowed before those Finns who've only had some 40 years to visit have their chance first!" -Jukka, 42
Black flies are worse than mosquitoes.
Oot kova äijä
you look like Bam.😀
Chee I hate mosquitos. Their sound makes my nose tickle when they fly near 🤧
Wait, Norway doesn't belong to Eu?
no

Be careful about drinking water from lake or river there. Because there have been situations were reindeer has died into the water. I guess its rare But still.
It's very rare for that to happen. It's safe to drink straight from lake and river
