Dave is getting more Finnish by the day. "ja tuhosi neljä tankkia" - Noni.
"and i destroyed four tanks"

Ok, Dave? You need to try some of those candyboxes like Juhlapöydän Konvehteja. I'm surprised you haven't come across those yet especially during Christmas times.
Agree ^^ My Mummi gets one for each of my cousins and me for the big five holidays
And it has even been chosen to be the best confection box in Finland at least two years in a row.

Something to try next Christmas. We want an opinion on the pineapple ones.

Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian have once been a single language. Hungarian split from Finnish and Estonian languages like 4500 years ago and Estonian and Finnish around 2000 years ago.
There are alot of words that are related in finnish and hungarian like blood in finnish is veri and in hungarian vér.
Also Hungarian is really easy to pronounce for Finns even though it first looks pretty different. Just remember that "á" is same as "aa" in Finnish and then pronounce it as you would Finnish and you are going to do pretty great with a slight accent.
Gotta love those finno ugric languages, lol. I agree with good luck learning them.
Hungarians are just turks.
There is also an old Finnish quite self-ironic joke about our Finno-Ugrian origins with Hungary. It has been determined that we share some ancient common cultural heritage from the far east, even from Japan. At some point in ancient history us Finns and Hungarians decided to move westward, to the world of tomorrow or whatnot. Well, as the story goes, the major split between us Finns and Hungarians happened when our peoples crossed the Ural mountains. Some of us decided to go south where the weather is warm, the land is fertile, the food is plenty and the sexy hot women walk around in skimpy clothes.
@@harri9885 I’d heard something about the asiatic connection before. It may have been someone thinking that the word Hungary came from the Huns. As in Attila. 🤷♀️ I mean, they did visit (and plunder and pillage) Europe several centuries ago. Perhaps there’s something to that story?
Giving a knife as a present in Finland is valued because puukko is considered both a useful (survival) tool and something to defend yourself with if need be, so it tells the recipient you care for their wellbeing. But the Finnish Defence Forces do not give knives for soldiers because it is considered a highly personal item and you are expected to bring your own. That is so even though the soldier handbook specifically demands everyone to know how to use puukko to start a fire and as a secondary melee weapon.
When in the Finnish Army you are graduating from non-commissioned officer school or reserve officer school (not sure about correct names) its tradition that everybody takes part of group purchase of "kurssipuukko". This is a Finnish puukko with engraving of the course name and/or number and your name on the blade. Then for the rest of the national service you proudly carry this knife on your field uniform belt. And of course the knife is often used for years and years after the service.
@@Polydeukes68yea and i was rewarded a puukko for good service
I argue that the reason the FDF doesn't issue Puukko is because they would run out of bandages ;)
Oh and RK does have a bayonet. I have never seen them issued, but i have seen them in storage.
Vilho Rättö's deed is even cooler when you read the whole story. The enemy AT gun had it's aiming device broken so he aimed through the barrel to destroy those 4 tanks.
9:20 actually when Vilho’s company’s secretary/kirjuri told him about receiving the Mannerheim cross, he said “Mikäs se semmoinen risti on?”, or in English “what kind of a cross is that?” So you were right, he was the 4th soldier to receive the mannerheim cross, and whilst the three before him were really high ranking officers (colonels and such) and he won it as a PRIVATE. And he essentially just reacted with what you said. Badass. He eventually ranked up all the way to “Ylikersantti” (or the rank above sergeant)
also 'No Niin', he did it right!!
The rising sun in the background of the 1906 postcard is indeed a reference to the Japanese empire, at this point in History Russia had just lost the Russo-Japanese war and a lot of opressed people under the Russian empire took advantage of that in order to demand liberties or fight for independence. There were even Finnis patriots yelling "Banzai" and the Finns tried to send volunteers to train in Japan (which didn't happen, and Sweden also refused so they went to Germany and became the famous Jägers)
Enemy of our enemy is our friend. ;)
Very interesting, thanks for info!
There is a lovely song by the name of banzai from that time that can be quite offensive nowadays for japanese and ruskies, but it captures feelings of those days so well.
That Panda chocolate box is a common thing that you'll have around christmas. (usually you get at least one as a present)😅
It's good, I recommend trying.
Also, I somehow expected that Marabou chocolate is sold around the Europe and in the UK too. Apparently, I was wrong😅
I do believe finnish, estonian and hungarian are all uralic languages, hence the difficulty
Yeah since they arent really related to any other languages of Europe, which are all atleast indo-european.
Finnish language is not very difficult at all... Since a little brat, I´ve been talking in finnish... 😁
@@juhapihkanen easy enough for babies, how hard could it be right?
Finno-ugrian
@@Sipu97 Not mutually exclusive.
That map of European countries ranking languages basically answers the question "How similar is it to english?"
Yep, no way an average person would go from zero knowledge to fluent English in 12 weeks unless they literally spend all of their time on it, and there are so many variables in learning a language that you can't just say "this language takes 24 weeks to learn and that takes 44 weeks".
I literally laughed out loud when after talking about the soldier you said "noni hyvä", like a true Finn.
Finns also give axes as presents.
There is a very very sad unfortunate story about this.
Urho Somersalmi, one the first finnish film stars and a real theatre legend, was given an axe by the actors union as a present. He murdered his wife Aili Somersalmi (also a legendary actress) with the axe he got from the actors union and hung himself.
It is said Urho's ghost haunts the national theatre.
The "place names in Helsinki" map is partly made in joke. For example Bring Mari's Village is Tuomarinkylä, so Judge's Village. Lots of streets named after legal terminology and professions over there (I know 'cause my parents live in the area).
Dave!! Tokmanni has "ämpäritarjous" all the time, where you get some sale (ie. socks) and you get a Tokmanni bucket for free. I bought a bucket full of yarn, so now I have a bright red Tokmanni bucket. I don't know if they have ämpäritarjous right now, but I'm sure there will be.
r/Finland is so tame compared to r/Suomi though...
Perkele
The knife thing was a culture clash with some Latvian visitors we had. We gave them puukkos as a welcome gift, but they insisted on paying for them. This was in the 90's and back then neither spoke good English, so it took a bit to understand, that in Latvian culture you can apparently only accept a knife as a gift, if you give a coin in return.
7:15 wait, was that a joke or have you really not had Panda's Juhlapöydän box of chocolates? Because around christmas they're everywhere! It's like the number one generic present if you're out of ideas.
You have been seen to go thought quite a lot of candy, but occasionally also a bucket of booze. There's a slightly depressing amusement park Tykkimäki in Kouvola to which any responsible candy eating booze drinking dad can take the family to. Also the world's best licorice Kouvolan Lakritsi is made in Kouvola.
Tykkimäki has a lot of stuff aimed at young children iirc. Maybe a good destination for Dave and the family in a few year's time?
The skiing kid is so cool.
Hungarian is in the same language family as Finnish and Estonian. Finno Ugric.
12:25 Vaasa! Even the swans are jamming the traffic here.
I grew up in England and Scotland and went to 5 different schools (3 in England and 2 in Scotland) and only one of those schools had a compulsory uniform. 2 had no uniform, one school there were a couple of children that wore the official school jumper and the last one had “recommended school colours” (black, white, grey and red) with sweatshirts available in those colours if you wanted them. This was in the 1980s and early 1990s.
Havent fallen once this winter?
You just jinxed yourself.
Me? Twice.
It is easy to avoid slipping... just do not go outside XD
Once, ironically as I was pointing at the gravel spreading tractor passing by 😂
I've managed to avoid falling this year, and hope to continue that with the aid of ice cleats under my shoes. However, the spring thaw is the most dangerous time, as that's when thaw-freeze cycles turn snow and rain into the smoothest and slipperiest kinds of ice.
Kouvola sucks anyways, good weather makes no difference 😆
There are bucket deals in K-stores, like the one in the photo was a bucket full of oranges. And then there are ones in Tokmanni sometimes, where you get to load yhe "offer" in a bucket (like 3x Fairy for 10e) and you get the bucket as you buy the specific deal. I got my Original lonkero metal bucket as I bought a 6-pack from Tokmanni last year. That one is so cool.
last time i got bucket when i bought some liqourice (they came in that small bucket)
Only in Finland. We can be excited about bucket deals. And even more excited queuing for them.
7:47 Me and most of my friends got knives whan we turned six. We got them from our dads. Im pretty sure its because our dads grew up at a farm, so they had plenty of woodwork to do. Even though we live in helsinki now, its still fun to have our own knives.
Kouvola, you better send Dave back as is! I didnt realize earlier how much Kouvola can do to a man, Im having second thoughts about this..
8:20 That's actually "Terva Leijona". The "Leijona" (Lion) is the brand and the actual aroma is "terva + lakritsi" but there's no more actual terva (extract from wood when it's hot enough) because of EU, if I remember correctly.
That was the most accurate description of Terva Leijona I've ever heard - "Like a bonfire in mouth". That's so spot on! It's not that it burns, but it tastes like what bonfire smoke smells like.
Kouvolan Lakritsi is the GOAT. There's also another liquorice factory called Lakumesta in Kouvola area. At least there used to be. Their stuff is pretty good too.
Seconded. Lakumesta is really good, too. There's also a brewery I've heard good things about somewhere in Kouvola.
"I haven't fallen over once" you say 😱 you'll be falling all over the place now that you've jinxed it!!

Swans are protected by the law in finland. But i never thought i would see it that concretely :D
The post about war heros reminded me of a video idea I would love to see. You haven't done video on reacting to finnish music in while and well that topic is pretty done and dusted. But if you were to react to finnish military marches like Jääkärimarssi, Sillanpään marssi, Vapaussoturin valloitus laulu, Vöyrin marssi and my personal and the whole nations favorite Veteraanin iltahuuto. The lyrics are of course very patriotic but typical for finnish marches they are full of anger and sadness. And a nice history lesson. Would love to see you react to them.
Laughed at "Noni, hyvä." 😂 Sounds so finnish as it can. 😂
The swans have a police escort because 1) They're obviously dangerous to the traffic and 2) They're the national bird of Finland. (Specifically, "Whooper swan" a.ka. "common swan")
Also protected species in Finland.
They are also holy animals in mythology and should not be harmed.
Right Dave. Vihtominen needs to be a video now. Seriously.
That postcard was hugely problematic when it was released in 1906 and the Russian State did not approve of it at all.
Yup! Dave (and tbf a lot of Finns) might not be aware that the sun in the postcard does actually reference Japan because Russia had just lost a war against them. In Finland this aided in bringing an end to the first period of heavy russification efforts.
As a Finnish person I have never heard of a sauna whisk before.
I thought there was no translation for vihta or vasta in English language, but I guess there is one now.
Hey Dave, I live in Kouvola so if I'll see you around there this month, I'll definitely buy you a beer. Keep up the good content mate
I saw a video recently talking about school uniforms: (link to "Style Theory: Are School Uniforms Worth It?") ua-cam.com/video/_vwSrfw85S4/v-deo.html
(One point was that school uniforms can still have vast differences regarding materials and accessories.)
They say the language of heaven is finnish because it takes all eternity to learn it. 😆🇸🇪🇫🇮
Where have you been on every christmases if you have not tried Panda’s Juhlapöydän konvehti box? I think its most Finnish christmas thing that there is. :)
In school 6th grade, I took a voluntary course on camping and being outdoors. After the course we gathered on the school grounds so the teachers could hand us our certificates. Then the teacher called me to step forward and said I was the MVP of the course, and that I had the spirit to really be an outdoorsman, and handed me a genuine, handmade knife. Best day of that year.
Dave the F now???? You've lived in Finland like thousand years and YOU. HAVEN'T. HAD. PANDAN JUHLAPÖYDÄN KONVEHTEJA!? It's like the Swiss multitool of christmas gifts for those you wan't to remember but don't wanna buy anything expensive. :'D
I don't understand why the raising sun is problematic? Because of Imperial Japan?
Yes but only in places like China and South Korea. It is currently official flag of Japan self defense navy.
In addition, it was problematic for Russia at the time and put on the postcard on purpose. Russia had just lost a war against Japan, and this aided in bringing an end to the first russification period is Finland, too.
so basically fir those if you wondering. Im pretty sure hungarian, estonian and finnish are all in the same language family tree.
The scooter thing really scares me as a cyclist because sometimes I don’t have my extra bright headlight with me and I have to use a dimmer one. And in darker areas where I can somewhat see where I’m going but not well I’m afraid of there being a scooter on the way and me running into it especially when they’re oftentimes tipped over.
Yeah, totally! I think I saw somewhere that (at least in Helsinki?) there will be some more regulations on where the scooters are allowed to be parked... hopefully this is enforced by the scooter companies somehow to hold people accountable!
My friend is learning Finnish on Duolingo and it seems to really want to teach him the word velho 😭
It's teaching you culture by pointing out that Finns are wizards, not Vikings. ;D
Duolingo really likes Harry Potter
Sounds like someone needs to make confection box taste test video 😁
I stayed in hotel in Kouvola for a few nights a while ago. It is unbelievably grey, concrete color town. I lol'd when I noticed that carpets and wallpapers were printed to look like concrete! That was honest, they were proud of the thing that they never should - and that was coolest thing ever.
7:14 I've had those twice.
They are actually really tasty and as I remember, it was a two-layer box.
My grandpa always used to give me Leijona when i was little. And i loved it then and still do 😁 think its funny when people from other counties try it and the faces they make 😂
We Finns dont buy Marabou. we rarely ever buy Swedish stuff. The *Sauna whisk*is used to smack your self on the back when your in the sauna
I got a scout knife (has a finger guard in the handle) from a class mate when I turned 12. Unfortunately I have lost it during the decades. But yeah, I would appreciate a (especially handmade) knife as a present.
11:03 can confirm: he is a Fox guy. [edit: his name is Tucker Carlson.]
Very popular newscaster amongst the sort that like Donald Trump/Ron DeSantis.

We have our own nutjobs as well, they're not just as famous internationally. Ano Turtiainen, for example, is a member of the parliament.
9:00 fun part of that story is that during the heat of battle he did not have time to learn how to aim the at-gun so he just looked through the breach.
Here's a challenge @Dave Cad, go to Kouvola and find ONE THING worth going to Kouvola for.
Maybe Kouvolan lakritsi?

As an (unfortunate) American, I'm sorry you had to endure that clip. I assure you many Americans do not share that view you had to stomach! :( Love your content!
I just learned how Fox got into real trouble, the hosts (including Tucker Carlson) text messages are just brutal. Somehow I thought they would be “too big to fail”, but Im happy to see they didnt get away with the stolen election narrative. I have lots of American friends, so Im relieved there has to be some sorta sense on what you can call news. And that the hosts arent actually that crazy, they just play these persons for ratings. Btw, our local Fox (mostly Simpsons & Family Guy, no news) suddenly changed its name to Star, now I know why. Greetings from sunny, but still cold Helsinki :)

About the free buckets... This is embarrassing, but my wife went to the polling station of the church only because they gave a free bucket to everyone attending the polls. For your guide these polls usually get a 3 to 5 pct attendance. And now, if I ask her if she was somewhere (interesting) she replies "no, there were no buckets given". Well, joking of course...
