  • Healthytarian Minutes with holistic teacher Evita Ochel (www.evitaochel.com). This episode explains the basics of food combining and how to use these guidelines for best health, energy, weight and digestion.
Learn how to eat an optimal diet for your health and weight with the Eat Real Food: Whole-Food, Plant-Based Eating online video program: www.udemy.com/whole-food-plan...
    Video transcript:
The types of foods you eat and the amounts you eat them in both play a role in the creation of proper health, energy and weight, or lack thereof. But how you combine your foods, as part of your meals is also important to consider, as different types of food require different enzymes, pH levels and digestion times.
Food combining is based on the concept that certain foods go well together and complement each other biochemically, while others interfere with each other’s digestion resulting in many problems, like malabsorption of nutrients, fatigue, mental fog, bloating, indigestion, excess or unpleasant gas, constipation or diarrhea, toxicity and food sensitivities.
If you have poor digestion, or would like to improve or support your digestive system’s function and your energy levels, here are the most useful and important food combining guidelines:
In general, fruits should be consumed on their own, on an empty stomach either before or in between meals, as they are the fastest and easiest to digest.
Some fruits combine well with leafy greens, for example as part of green smoothies, and some can be paired with real grains, such as a bowl of oatmeal or buckwheat.
Non-starchy vegetables combine well with starchy vegetables, such as asparagus with potatoes.
Most vegetables also combine well with beans and real grains, for meals like veggie soups, chilis and whole-meal salads.
Animal foods, like meat or eggs combine well with most water-rich vegetables, but not starchy vegetables or grains. If you eat such foods, having some meat or eggs with a common salad would be fine, where as having them with potatoes, rice or bread would not.
Isolated and concentrated fats, like oils do not go well with most foods high in starch or protein. Eat healthy fats from whole plant foods instead, like nuts, seeds, avocados, coconuts and olives, predominantly with vegetables.
Overall, simple meals and ones made of whole, real plant foods are the best, rather than meals made of many different foods, refined foods or animal foods.
Note, that food combining is not nutrient combining and some food combining guidelines can be faulty, complicated or impractical by focusing on isolated nutrients too much. Food is a collection of nutrients, not a single nutrient. Beans, for example, are high in both protein and starch, and animal foods are high in both protein and fat.
Be sure, therefore, to use conscious discernment with any food combining guidelines you choose and most importantly pay attention to how your body feels.

thank you so much for your video. i am starting a healthier journey and did not know about these combinations. Is there any way you could make a video explaining or giving some examples of simple meals with ingredients that go together for a typical menu for a day? if not, do you know where i can find this infromation? thank you so much! :)

You are very welcome, and it is great to hear about your choice to take a healthier journey. If you explore the other Healthytarian Minutes in this series (www.healthytarian.com/page/healthytarian-minutes), there are several that can help get you started that deal with healthy eating. To help with your meal combo question specifically, I recommend these to start:
      1. Meal templates: ua-cam.com/video/WF3wtDwwvn4/v-deo.html
      2. How to Build a Healthy Plate: ua-cam.com/video/sR1wBz7v21w/v-deo.html
With regards to what a typical day could look like, I have this video that can help:
      ua-cam.com/video/Vmfjtfs6GWI/v-deo.html
And for complete guidance on what foods to eat and how to work with them, that also includes recipes and more meal examples, I have a complete video program "Eat Real Food: How to Eat a Whole-food, Plant-based Diet" here: www.udemy.com/whole-food-plant-based-diet/?couponCode=sitespecial25
The most important thing to consider though, if you are just starting a healthier journey, is that it is more essential to first get the right foundation of foods in your diet, rather than food combining. Trying to eat the right foods and in the right combos can feel overwhelming at first, so this is why I recommend taking it step by step, and as you get comfortable with one area, then explore and apply another area of healthy eating. Of course there are some simple and easy to use right away food combining guidelines, like eating fruit alone that everyone can do. Either way, there are many steps on this journey, and that is part of what makes it fun and exciting, allowing us to grow and evolve, and keep up with what is best for our body, health and our environment. Best wishes!

I'm glad I found you...I have real problems with food and my digestion. I have been to all kinds of dr.'s. I have done muscle testing and homeopathy. No relief yet. I'm plant based and would prefer eating more raw, but wonder if that's the problem. I feel that I get my vitamins than cooking them all out. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

Hi Michele. I am limited in what I can share via a UA-cam comment, as your case requires a personal consultation where your diet, health, and lifestyle history can be analyzed. I can tell you quickly though, that if homeopathy did not work for you, it is only because you were either not given the right remedy for you or the right dose. It takes a very skilled homeopath to properly diagnose a case and take into account all apsects of a person's childhood, personality, lifestyle, and symptoms. And only 1 remedy should be given based on classical homeopathy principles at a time, no mixtures or combos, etc.
Either way, in general, digestive problems are related to one or more of the following four things:
      1. Stress, especially anxiety
      2. Bad past and/or current diet; you need to let your intestines heal for a few months with light whole plant foods only (no processed or refined stuff, especially oils and isolated sugars)
      3. Heavy antibiotic or other pharmaceutical drug use
      4. Alcohol use
In my experience, most people who have changed diets and sought help are suffering because of #1 - they do not realize how much stress their body has taken on and any uncontrolled or ongoing anxiety is going to severely impair the function of the intestines. Work on your life and stress levels, and "how you digest your life experiences" and you will see drastic changes in your digestive health. Examine who you live with, the type of work you do, childhood traumas, etc. All of this creates much of the intestinal suffering that most people are suffering from today. Our intestines are our second brain and deeply interconnected with our nervous system. So if your nervous system is overwhelmed, your digestive system will not function properly. Best wishes!

If I eat artificial food and conbine wrong ones, will it make eating that food even worse for my digestion?

    • @Healthytarian
      @Healthytarian  3 роки тому +1

Eating artificial food is bad for your body and health regardless and how much worse it will be for your difestion depends on what artificial foods you eat.

Hello Miss, why you can't combine eggs and Ezekiel bread for breakfast

    • @Healthytarian
      @Healthytarian  3 роки тому +1

Rhojay, eggs are not part of optimally healthy eating, regardless of what you combine them with. The example I was emphasizing is that avocados and eggs should specifically not be combined because they are both very high fat foods. However, avocados provide healthy fats, whereas eggs provide unhealthy fats, in addition to other problems.
To learn more about the problems with eggs, please refer to the following collection of scientific research videos from Dr. Michael Greger: nutritionfacts.org/topics/eggs/
And here is more research to better understand the media bias for eggs in our society: nutritionstudies.org/eggs-new-heart-health-food-or-rotten-reporting/
