  • Paul and Todd return to their radiometric dating series with this interview with Russ Humphreys, who was part of the original RATE project. Dr. Humphreys describes his study of helium, an element produced when radioactive elements break down. What clues will helium give us about the age of the earth? Find out in this episode!

    Thank you for this episode. It would be very interesting to hear how Dr Humphreys resolves the so called "heat problem"

      If the so-called accelerated nuclear decay is only associated with creation, then there can be no heat problem.
      Personally, I don’t think it makes any sense whatsoever to associate it with the Flood.
      The samples were taken from granite, which looks like basement rock. And granite appears to have only ever been hot one time. Otherwise it would be riolite.
      Some creationists want accelerated nuclear decay to help explain CPT.
      But I don’t think either makes sense.
      For starters, accelerated decay in basement granite can’t be the explanation for subducted plates in the ocean floor or continental margins.
      And the mantle is solid rock (contrary to popular belief). Plates aren’t going to dive into the mantle because of heat, radio active decay, or density differences.
      The subducted plates were more likely pushed via high levels of kinetic energy.

    Great video. Could you guys do an episode on pangea vs rodinia for the pre flood world, if you have not discussed it before?

      @LetsTalkCreation The highlight was the helium leakage data versus the radiometric date being in conflict. The helium hard data speaks volumes compared to the radiometric indications. What a great coup for the Rate project.

      @@LetsTalkCreationI know an evolutionist who insists this is a bad argument for a young earth (big surprise right)- I know Dr. Humphreys has responded to several criticisms of it over the years, will he continue to respond to criticisms made more recently? If I recall the critic attempted to point to more recent studies similar to Dr. Humphreys on different rocks that didn't get similar data.

    Are you guys aware of the work of the Safire project? They are developing a device to produce power that deals with nuclear waste by speeding up the decay rate through an electromagnetic reaction with certain gases.

      I have read about something similar. When large amounts of electricity are run through radioactive material it cases a fast decay. It's been years ago when I read that and wondered if anyone was doing anything with it. Thanks for the info. I have even wondered if piezo electric effects and long term low hear of rock could not cause an issues with reading dating methods. I don't have enough knowledge to say or know yet. I spent more time looking into genetics them I have radiometric dating.

    ~:30 "There are lots of people out there who haven't discovered us yet." (I think I will adopt that positive outlook going forward in the new year ;>)
    ~45: I was looking at those "Helium Leak Age" numbers from the perspective of the Greek OT chronology (age of earth ~7462 years old). At least the LXX age falls within the fudge factor +/- 2000 years range. (However, seems like their average was likely artificially low since they did not omit the very low 2400 year result.)

    @letstalkcreation I know this isn’t really related but I wanted to ask, what are your thoughts on primates using tools and do you think this is good evidence for them entering some evolution. It is something that has been shaking me for a while. Thank you

      Some animals use tools, but humans nowadays certainly do it better. Where does Genesis say that only humans can use tools? I would also note that Paleologos did a great debunking of the stone tools abundance argument, by showing that it assumes an old earth. I think if we see homo neanderthals and homo erectus as human, descended from Adam and Eve there isn't much of an issue. I just got the book Fossils and the Flood by Garner and it is very well done. Homo Naledi is always the debated one - you can see Institute for Creation Research 's arguments against Naledi and Todd Wood's arguments for humanity. There is a book that Creation Ministries International called Disputed Bones that goes into depth on human fossils. I know that Jerry Bergmann's Apes As Ancestors you can get on creation superstore which is even more recent. But I am curious which specific argument is troubling you. I mean we can't prove ancestor descendent relationships directly through fossils. And some animals use tools today. In fact other primates using tools might even help explain tool abundance. But the difference between animals and humans are much greater than simple tools.

    What you're saying is that God, in His infinite wisdom, decreased the rate of uranium isotope decay a million-fold shortly before it was measured just so it would agree with your modeling for the rate of helium diffusion from Zircon crystals (and a 6,000-year age for the Earth). Praise the Lord for this miracle!

    • @boxelder9167

      Or one could believe in the miracle of helium and hydrogen forming uranium that got ejected from a star and made the earth complete with a moon in orbit which spawned life from nonliving chemicals that then became intelligent and started making up stories about how they could come to be.

      2nd Peter 3
      3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. 4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, 6 and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. 7 But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

    • @jonnyg1799
      @jonnyg1799 8 місяців тому

      I don’t think God changed the decay rate at all. I think it’s a sign that there was a major catastrophe possibly involving a solar super flare. Aureon is developing a reactor to deal with nuclear waste by exponentially speeding up the rate of decay in radioactive elements that are present using an electromagnetic process. I think the rate was sped up by whatever caused the flood.
      To my fellow believers: we don’t need to throw 2 Peter 3 at everyone that disagrees. It’s disingenuous and doesn’t move the conversation forward.

    • @baa950
      @baa950 4 місяці тому

      I don't think they're proposing a specific explanation for why the uranium decay accelerated, but merely pointing out that the acceleration did happen. The question of how would be a different question, though related.
