I thought it was cute as all hell when Bonnie tried to hook her brother up, said brother's reactions just being icing on the cake. Max, on the other hand, I, to this day, want to feed to the nearest Ursaring. Brock is a man among men and a poster boy for what women should expect, even if he is a bit flamboyant.
Dude, Dawn was like the best one of Ash’s companions. She had a huge impact on him and even gave him a new battle style, the counter-shield, and whether or not you ship them it’s obvious they adore each other. Plus, she did develop a lot. Her journey from an overconfident newbie to a more mature and incredibly skilled coordinator was a great thing to watch.
“Dawn just felt like she was there” - are you telling me the only female companion who actually managed to share the spotlight alongside Ash Ketchum and wasn’t sidelined halfway through the show, who had a misplaced overly confident beginning, had a depressive stunt in the middle, and a massive comeback growth in the end, WAS JUST THERE? Damn, didn’t realize people couldn’t read well written subtle changes, even though it was episodes where Dawn’s confidence was tested and where she had to learn about things, and had numerous mental breakdowns. That was infuriating goodbye.

I feel like Mystic rushed through the Dawn section. There’s a lot more that can be said about her character development. She’s basically the closest the anime ever got to having a female protagonist. But then again it’s just his opinion on her.

plaid locks I love Dawn so so much, she’s my number one Pokegirl just because of her personality and character development, but I wouldn’t blame the fans for choosing Serena first. Serena is a refined version of all the Pokegirls, she and Dawn are very similar in terms of their personal growth and personality. As for the romance aspect, it’s obviously a callback to the romance with Misty, while her deciding on what she wanted to become is based on May. She’s all of the Pokegirl’s best qualities- so how they feel is justified. But to me, Dawn will always be top, because out of all the female characters, she was the only one who truly shared the spotlight with Ash. DP wasn’t just Ash’s journey, it was Ash and Dawn’s with Brock in the background. That’s why in movies, in posters, songs, they’re always side by side, because they’re a team
After watching that battle I've learned that there is "no need to worry" eventhough you have lost by a tiny chance in life that there is always another turn. Love Dawn ❤️
Honestly Ash And Dawn had one of the best friendships among his companions. They really learned a lot from each other and they even had there own thing with the high five. Plus you're making sound like Dawn didnt develop at all. She started off very overconfident and kept on losing and losing and got depress until she started to improve and humble herself aswell. Edit: An honestly. I find Misty and Iris to basically be the same exact character. Only that Misty got nicer overtime.
Dawn's development was made in parallel to Ash's, at least his journey (you know, cause his development resets with every region) And yeah, Iris was made to be exactly like Misty. I believe it was told through different sources that if it wasn't for the dub edits, including them adding these pokeshipping moments, Misty would've been a worse character than Iris.

But the anime writers completely fucked it up.

Paul to this day is the most well written character in the Pokémon anime. He challenged Ash not just to his abilities of a trainer, but his entire ideology. Ash's entire way of battling with Pokémon were tested with Paul and his win at the Sinnoh League as well as the two finally understanding each other remains one of Pokémons strongest moments.

I feel like most of these opinions he has are going off not watching most of the characters' respective seasons in awhile. Most are the same vague statements people think about the characters when they haven't watched them in years, but he hasn't reached the point where he rewatches them and sees what parts were better or worse than he remembered.
Compare Dawn at the beginning of the series, who was always freaking out and got depressed easily, to the character at the end of the series who actually understood that there was no need to worry about things. And we got to see her gradually evolve between the two. Also Iris was good.

As a Alola fan. I think DP had the best girl companion in the series . Dawn’s growth as a coordinator and as a character easily eclipse any of the companions (yes even that of Serena). Ash and Dawn basically have this close sibling like relationship. I’ll take you to the distortion world if you think otherwise

I always found Cilan to be just as hilarious as Brock was at times. Sad that so many people don't even get a chance to see the hilarious side of him because Majority will just skip the Black and White anime episodes and go directly to X and Y. I actually enjoyed the intros the Black and White anime had. I disliked how X and Y repeated the original opening and never made it stand out. Why give yourself a new intro when you can just remix the older one. (oh wait... because Pokemon X and Y was just a reboot of Red and Blue... but with French Doggies and Mega Gen 1 Pokemon added to the Mix.) What's Sun and Moon... Gen 1 but with a Hawaiian setting. Sword and Shield... Let's chop half the Pokedex out of our game but give everyone variations of some of our favorite Pokemon. That's sadly why I honestly feel like Black and White was when Pokemon was at it's peak. The anime I prefer more than the games, but I wish people would just give it a chance and watch it from the perspective of someone who was new to the anime. I find Iris more tolerable than Misty because despite her frustrations, she still cared for Ash in her own way. (Plus, she didn't steal Scraggy from Ash, like Misty stole Togepi from him... that Togepi was his, she stole it from him)

I like Iris. I think Ash and Iris had a big rivalry because they act the same. Everyone hates on black and white, But it's my second favorite series. Diamond and Pearl is in front because of Dawn, Brock, and the rivalry between Ash's Infernape, And Paul's Electivire. Diamond and Pearl Ash has my favorite team: Pikachu, Infernape, Buizel, Staraptor, Gliscor, and Torterra. But, I can also not forget the hilarious scenes when Ash's Gible would hit Piplup with Draco Meteor. I miss Diamond and Pearl, and can't wait for the game remakes to come out.
Problem with Iris to me is that she was a jerk for no reason. Misty was justified because Ash was a newbie. By B/W, though, he was a quarter-finalist in the Sinnoh League, had beaten the Orange League and the Battle Frontier, and qualified for three other leagues. Iris was pretty much a newbie. To be fair, Ash didn't really defend himself, not properly. He didn't bring up all of that stuff at all. And then he became an idiot

It really is too bad Alola didn't get any OVAs or special episodes, whatever you wanna call them, because they had so much opportunities. They could have shown Kiawe training with Oliva to become a Kahuna, they could have shown Lana and her dad trying to find Manaphy, they could have shown Lillie and her family searching for her father. What's extra annoying is the fact that Sinnoh, Unova and Kalos all got two OVAs. But given the fact the entire cast will probably return in the Pokémon 2019 anime, it's likely they wanted to save those potential stories for then, which means we'll hopefully still get to see them!

LittleAl016 it isn’t poorly constructed, it shows greatly how at first she had nothing to strive for and she just traveled to leave her house and then when she finally found something that she wanted to do how she failed at first but it didn’t stop her because she’s strong. Sure she had her moments of weakness like when she cried, got upset at times, and she cut her hair, but it goes to show you that she isn’t weak she has a lot more emotion inputted into her character than a lot of others and she’s more human-like than the others. When she discovered a dream and set off to fulfill it she was a really hard worker to get to that point and she got to the finals and she worked so hard to get there. She was a great character and she fit into the xy plot perfectly.
@@Jana-tp6yo "Cutting her hair" is actually a pretty weak point to make, even if you understand why she did that, because everything else that happened afterwards would have happened anyways had she not done that. And regardless of the writers' intentions, it makes her come across as excessively dramatic, unwilling to accept that things won't go her way, and possibly desperate for attention. At the least, it's not related to her character at all. And she had "nothing to strive for" UNTIL Ash came into the picture. Why is she so special that she needed Ash as a reason for basically everything she does when, a), none of the other female travelling companions needed Ash as a reason for literally anything, or b), neither of her other two official counterparts (or three, if you count her Masters counterpart) even needed someone who clearly isn't romantically interested in them to do anything with their lives? Especially when there's zero interaction between Serena's game and Adventures (and Masters) counterparts and Ash's? She could have been replaced by almost any other girl in the X and Y anime, including those from the X and Y games (and I say "almost" because there's at least two girls who wouldn't work as Ash's travelling companions due to their own character) and it would have gone pretty much the same way as it did, presently. Same if the player avatar character in the X and Y games who didn't get chosen to represent the player didn't show up in the main story. And honestly. Every female travelling companion, before and after her, came across as more human than her. Especially when you consider that they weren't introduced in manners similar to self-inserts, nor did they come across as boring as such. Same can be said for her other official counterparts, especially Yvonne Gabena (who is literally a better-written version of Anime Serena).
The thing about Serena though... she basically was a fangirl of Ash. Misty at least stood up to Ash in a way that made him stronger. Most situations Serena goes through, Ash has already been through with Misty, so those moments feel like a rehash. If Misty were to have kissed Ash at the end of the Johto Saga, it would have felt more earned than Serena's Kiss. She was also a forced retcon of Ash's past, shoehorning her into the Anime for BS reasons other than being the XY Female Protagonist. It's not that I hate her, it's that she wasn't given a proper explanation for her existence as someone who knew Ash. It felt forced and I didn't like that. Serena is a great character on her own, but forcing her to have known as a kid was a bit much, especially since people auto-shipped her hard with Ash because of that. It didn't feel earned at all. Though points for Serena for actually going for it.

Yeah, I grew up watching the Gen 5 anime dub, so there is bias here, but may I ask, am I the only one who actually really liked both Iris AND Cilan in the anime? Just to rub it in here's why Iris: She's not the stereotypical female anime character you'd expect to see compared to the others, and I actually like her team more than Misty's because 1. Dragons are cool and 2. She actually has some form of variety. But really, she's so unique compared to the stereotype that's been shown off with characters like May, Dawn, and Serena. Also, I think the lack of shipping evidence is actually a good thing, because shipping is overrated. Cilan: There's only two reasons to not like him. 1. He replaced Brock, and 2. He goes on and on about that conniseur (I have no idea how to spell that) stuff. But put it this way. It's a lot less annoying than hearing "THE FUTURE IS NOW THANKS TO SCIENCE" every freaking episode. I also like how he has the guts to use less popular Pokémon on his team, like Pansage and Stunfisk. On top of that, most of Ash's male friends aside from Brock are honestly kinda forgettable for me.
Interesting opinions there I grew up watching black and white too and yeah I prefer clemont than cilan if we're comparing those 2 plus I feel like ash and clemont have a brotherly relationship which Ash acting like the big brother I think that is cool. I find cilan ok and funny. I am mostly ok with iris yeah sure she can be annoying but she definitely shown some character development there I did like her battle against Drayden which illustrates my point.

GALAXY NOVA u brave for this lol but I defo agree, May too me is kinda devoid of a personality, at least Dawn has her bitchy/diva moments, that help her get humbled and become more positive. May is honestly just kinda there, while she has her own emotional moments, most of it is just her crying, which while very sad to see (much sadder than Serena’s meltdown btw) that’s kinda all she does, she occasionally has her moments but it’s way rarer than Dawn, and that’s why imo Dawns better than May (and Serena as well tbh because even though Serena is cute, having a crush on ash isn’t a personality trait)
My opinions: Girls: Serena is my favourite. Dawn and May are my second favourite. Lillie and Bonnie and Mallow are my third favourite. Misty is close to be on my third spot but now she's on fourth fav along with Lana. Iris might be my least favourite of them but I still like her. Boys: Brock is my favourite. Clemont is my second favourite. Kiawe is my third favourite. Cilan is my fourth favourite. Tracey is... Forgettable... Max annoys me but I don't hate him. I'm not a big fan of Sophocles.
Iris was actually likeable to me. She’s my 2nd favorite female companion right behind Misty. Sure many people got annoyed with her “what a little kid” catchphrase but she was still a breath of fresh air. Iris proved herself to be a strong trainer because she always puts up a great fight in all her battles, she’s brave because of how she climbed up a clock tower to rescue the Gible she captured, has a good skill of finding good food in the wild & specializes in dragon types which we all know is one of the best typings. It’s also good that she has variety of typings in her team even though she wants to be a dragon master. Excadrill fits her team very well because it is part steel type so she has defense against ice and fairy types which are the 2 weaknesses of dragons. Overall in my opinion Iris was amazing & she was a perfect Misty clone. Fight me haters ;)
I actually love Iris.! She is the least sexualized pokegirl (besides Lana), and she had this "Tribal" feeling about her, sure she was little annoying sometimes, but so was Ash, Misty, May, Max, Dawn, and even Serena.! So I don't get the hate.

Tbh i don’t really like Serena.I feel the only reason people like her is because she liked Ash.She wasn’t strong (having only 3 pokemon and only one being fully evolved). Nothing but facts. Amourshipping is EXTREMELY overrated imo. Not gonna down anyone for liking it, but serena just came off as bland and mostly just there, and outside of her outfit change, had no real major development or character outside of her crush on ash. Lots of wasted potential really.
When will people learn that it's neither the size of your arsenal or how powerful it is, it's how you use it that counts. Look at Ash's current roster. 2 unevolved Pokemon (Rowlet and Meltan) 2 middle stage (Pikachu and Torracat) and one fully evolved. 5 Pokemon and yet before Meltan showed up to be captured, Ash had just the 4 and beaten all the Grand Trials. William Maya I felt that some of Misty’s anger toward Ash was justified; she had plenty of experience with Pokémon, Ash was a bit of a dolt, and Pikachu zapped her bike. That and she has a functioning brain. Not too sure why she was mad at Brock, but I’m assuming it’s for his most memorable trait. Oh and I guess the logs weigh next to nothing in Pokémon, as 10 year olds seem to throw them around like nothing.

Serena's final scene features a line where she talks about becoming stronger so that she could be a more attractive woman for Ash. It’s not wrong to like someone, but if you like them from the very start and only wanna better yourself to impress them then that’s a clear motive.
Green I get what you’re saying, but I still don’t agree with it. You could argue that Serena cutting her hair was bad writing, but how is that bad writing, yet Lillie being mean to her mother isn’t? What makes that bad writing is that Lusamine is actually a very nice mother in the anime, something she wasn’t in the games, and yet Lillie has to be such a whiny brat to her. And the way she changed into her Z-Powered forme when there was no reason to like in the games, that was also bad writing. So why only criticize and hate on Serena?
I think Dawn gets too little credit. Yeah, I think May's personal journey and development was more provoking, but I think that's because she was introduced in the same generation that contests were introduced. She was able to appreciate a brand new aspect of Pokemon battles and displays along with us. Dawn on the other hand, is a bit underrated, because she is well versed in contests prior to becoming a coordinator herself, because the knowledge she attained from her mom. However, since she had that prior knowledge, this made her extremely cocky and unwilling to learn from others outside of her mom. This is an aspect that May lacked, because May was cooperative and willing to learn from others from the jump. She learned from Ash, Drew, Brock and other experienced coordinators every chance she had, because she had no prior knowledge. Dawn on the other hand, was humbled when her way backfired consistently and resulted in her bottoming out in a way that May never did. She had to completely reimagine herself and learn from the strengths and weaknesses of others.
Don’t agree with you about Iris. The B&W anime had a lot of problems that I put solely on the writers. Complaining about her Drilbur when she chooses to be come a Dragon master is like complaining to an Ice Pokemon master why they choose a Squirtle when they started. Iris got along great with all kinds of Pokémon, and their is a good story in B&W how she met Drilbur then became a great battler, and then met Drayden. After that meeting she choose to work toward being a Dragon master.
Agreed!! Iris is also skilled in finding good food in the wild & brave for saving the Gible she caught from falling off a clock tower. I’d say she deserves praise because she can do amazing things that the other companions cant do
The OofMan I was born during the Battle Frontier so I watched DP and onward but I hate Sun and Moon a lot. On another note I did go back and finish watching The Hoenn anime.

BW was trash, and nearly completely killed my interest in the anime after I started watching it again since I loved the Gen5 games so much. Iris had a lot to do with it, as did Ash regressing into being completely inept. Thank god XY/Z and SM brought some new life to the series, despite how controversial the latter is.
I'd have had Ash win in Sinnoh, and then do a proper reboot of the series starting with either a new Ash in a separate continuity, or a whole new character entirely, starting out on their journey after being inspired by Ash, the new Champion of Sinnoh.
Personally, I really liked the interactions between Ash and Dawn; the way they both supported and complimented each other. All of the companions had good points but you're right abour Max probably having the least. … I think you've already done one on Ash's rivals, haven't you? (Paul is the best though)
I love Dawn she's the best female companion in my opinion, then May then Misty, I hated Serena and Iris especially Serena and I haven't seen S and M yet.

Finally someone who's not overhyped on sarena. Only good thing on her is her one sided crush with ash. While her character development is just bland and boring. May was the one who started that contest thingy while dawn is that one girl that surpasses the og. And serena just like copied their homeworks she just changed it a bit. Iris and Misty are literally just the same character Idk why everyone hates her. She’s just a black Misty. Look at her behavior and features and Misty’s and it’s the exact same.
She called ash a kid a lot (even with stuff he genuinely didn't know like cursed body), which was annoying, almost all of her team disobeyed her (tho excadrill had a legit reason), and her Axew, Never, EVOLVED!! Even tho a) we know he wants to become a haxorus and b) that's precisely what Iris is supposed to b helping him become, not small and annoying as heck. He's cute, and his relationship with scraggy- was good, but that's all the props axew ever gets.
I wish they had made Axew evolve at the very least into a Fraxure. It was established pretty early that it did want to evolve, yet it was treated as a baby by the writers for the entirety of the series.

My top 3 Ash’s female companion: 1. Iris 2. Dawn 3. May And forth would be Serena. I don’t understand why so many people hates Iris. Her friendship between Ash was incredible, and their chemistry played very good together. Yes, sometimes she was annoying, but does it make her bad character? No, if you ask me. Dawn and May had the best growing as a character. When May started her adventure, she didin’t like Pokemon at all. But later she had an amazing ship with her pokemon, like Eevee and Blaziken. Iris is a dragon master in training and didn't know regular Charizard wasn't a dragon type... Gurl, there aren't that many dragons you should know them xD Also you have to give Dawn props for not taking a back seat to Ash in the DP series, she was there front and center for the movie posters and even the promotional stuff in Japan. Heck she was actually featured in a Commercial with Ash. I would also say she was the one who had the best friend relationship with Ash. Ash was at his peak in DP and a lot of his neat tricks came from Dawn's contests. Not to mention Dawn was probably the person who has helped Ash train the most. Serena for me was just ship bait. She literally only went out on her Journey for Ash... I don't know I guess I just didn't like the obvious crush on Ash? Sure she had this big character development but did she have to take up like 2 seasons of nothing? Also kinda lame those beauty pageants weren't even a thing in the games. ;-;

Dawn's my favourite especially with the way she developed from confident, then depressed and back to a good kind of confidence. And she trains with Ash, they teach each other moves and I think she's the most powerful in terms of battle among all female companions. She's also very lively, her contest moves and techniques are actually quite inspiring, and it's good to see Sun and Moon Brock adapt counter shield to this day. In terms of battle, Misty and May at a close second, no offence I'd put Serena as the last in terms of battle strength even though I like her 2nd favourite. Now that she's become a coordinator it'd be interesting to see whether she can handle contest battles, since her battle with Aria for example was quite sloppy I would say.

I like his character development, and his rude know-it-all personality was developed into occasional sarcasm. (Though I realize people dont see the sarcasm, my point still stands) I get moments of rudeness and stuff, but there are episodes and sections of movies that really show his development. (Like befriending a deoxys in that 2 part episode, saving a ralts, befriending a shuppet, etc etc jirachi) I remember seeing an arguement about the shuppet episode thing saying "Max is so bratty, he ran away from his sister and played a trick on them that could've killed them" However it wasn't considered that he ran away because May had said she never wanted a brother like him (geez man that's harsh) and he also said something like "My sister really likes this torchic so you cant have it" when faced alone with team rocket. It shows that he does care about them even though other characters may not return those feelings. My last point is short and sweet, he's just a kid. Every kid has those sarcasm moments, especially around the age he appears to be in the anime Sorry for my rant, but as Ive been seeing more and more people thinking negatively of Max, I really just want to make a statement. Even if it doesnt go far, I'd be happy to hear I changed at least a single person's mind.

Dude, Dawn was like the best one of Ash’s companions. She had a huge impact on him and even gave him a new battle style, the counter-shield, and whether or not you ship them it’s obvious they adore each other. Plus, she did develop a lot. Her journey from an overconfident newbie to a more mature and incredibly skilled coordinator was a great thing to watch.

plaid locks I love Dawn so so much, she’s my number one Pokegirl just because of her personality and character development, but I wouldn’t blame the fans for choosing Serena first.
Serena is a refined version of all the Pokegirls, she and Dawn are very similar in terms of their personal growth and personality. As for the romance aspect, it’s obviously a callback to the romance with Misty, while her deciding on what she wanted to become is based on May.
She’s all of the Pokegirl’s best qualities- so how they feel is justified. But to me, Dawn will always be top, because out of all the female characters, she was the only one who truly shared the spotlight with Ash.
DP wasn’t just Ash’s journey, it was Ash and Dawn’s with Brock in the background. That’s why in movies, in posters, songs, they’re always side by side, because they’re a team

Honestly Ash And Dawn had one of the best friendships among his companions. They really learned a lot from each other and they even had there own thing with the high five.
Plus you're making sound like Dawn didnt develop at all. She started off very overconfident and kept on losing and losing and got depress until she started to improve and humble herself aswell.

Dawn's development was made in parallel to Ash's, at least his journey (you know, cause his development resets with every region)
And yeah, Iris was made to be exactly like Misty. I believe it was told through different sources that if it wasn't for the dub edits, including them adding these pokeshipping moments, Misty would've been a worse character than Iris.

Paul to this day is the most well written character in the Pokémon anime. He challenged Ash not just to his abilities of a trainer, but his entire ideology. Ash's entire way of battling with Pokémon were tested with Paul and his win at the Sinnoh League as well as the two finally understanding each other remains one of Pokémons strongest moments.

I feel like most of these opinions he has are going off not watching most of the characters' respective seasons in awhile. Most are the same vague statements people think about the characters when they haven't watched them in years, but he hasn't reached the point where he rewatches them and sees what parts were better or worse than he remembered.

Compare Dawn at the beginning of the series, who was always freaking out and got depressed easily, to the character at the end of the series who actually understood that there was no need to worry about things. And we got to see her gradually evolve between the two.

As a Alola fan. I think DP had the best girl companion in the series . Dawn’s growth as a coordinator and as a character easily eclipse any of the companions (yes even that of Serena). Ash and Dawn basically have this close sibling like relationship.

Sad that so many people don't even get a chance to see the hilarious side of him because Majority will just skip the Black and White anime episodes and go directly to X and Y.
I actually enjoyed the intros the Black and White anime had. I disliked how X and Y repeated the original opening and never made it stand out. Why give yourself a new intro when you can just remix the older one. (oh wait... because Pokemon X and Y was just a reboot of Red and Blue... but with French Doggies and Mega Gen 1 Pokemon added to the Mix.) What's Sun and Moon... Gen 1 but with a Hawaiian setting. Sword and Shield... Let's chop half the Pokedex out of our game but give everyone variations of some of our favorite Pokemon. That's sadly why I honestly feel like Black and White was when Pokemon was at it's peak. The anime I prefer more than the games, but I wish people would just give it a chance and watch it from the perspective of someone who was new to the anime. I find Iris more tolerable than Misty because despite her frustrations, she still cared for Ash in her own way. I like Iris. I think Ash and Iris had a big rivalry because they act the same. Everyone hates on black and white, But it's my second favorite series. Diamond and Pearl is in front because of Dawn, Brock, and the rivalry between Ash's Infernape,
And Paul's Electivire. Diamond and Pearl Ash has my favorite team: Pikachu, Infernape, Buizel, Staraptor, Gliscor, and Torterra. But, I can also not forget the hilarious scenes when Ash's Gible would hit Piplup with Draco Meteor. I miss Diamond and Pearl, and can't wait for the game remakes to come out.

Problem with Iris to me is that she was a jerk for no reason. Misty was justified because Ash was a newbie. It really is too bad Alola didn't get any OVAs or special episodes, whatever you wanna call them, because they had so much opportunities. They could have shown Kiawe training with Oliva to become a Kahuna, they could have shown Lana and her dad trying to find Manaphy, they could have shown Lillie and her family searching for her father.
What's extra annoying is the fact that Sinnoh, Unova and Kalos all got two OVAs. But given the fact the entire cast will probably return in the Pokémon 2019 anime, it's likely they wanted to save those potential stories for then, which means we'll hopefully still get to see them!

LittleAl016 it isn’t poorly constructed, it shows greatly how at first she had nothing to strive for and she just traveled to leave her house and then when she finally found something that she wanted to do how she failed at first but it didn’t stop her because she’s strong. Sure she had her moments of weakness like when she cried, got upset at times, and she cut her hair, but it goes to show you that she isn’t weak she has a lot more emotion inputted into her character than a lot of others and she’s more human-like than the others. When she discovered a dream and set off to fulfill it she was a really hard worker to get to that point and she got to the finals and she worked so hard to get there. She was a great character and she fit into the xy plot perfectly.
@@Jana-tp6yo "Cutting her hair" is actually a pretty weak point to make, even if you understand why she did that, because everything else that happened afterwards would have happened anyways had she not done that. And regardless of the writers' intentions, it makes her come across as excessively dramatic, unwilling to accept that things won't go her way, and possibly desperate for attention. At the least, it's not related to her character at all.
And she had "nothing to strive for" UNTIL Ash came into the picture. Why is she so special that she needed Ash as a reason for basically everything she does when, a), none of the other female travelling companions needed Ash as a reason for literally anything, or b), neither of her other two official counterparts (or three, if you count her Masters counterpart) even needed someone who clearly isn't romantically interested in them to do anything with their lives? Especially when there's zero interaction between Serena's game and Adventures (and Masters) counterparts and Ash's?
She could have been replaced by almost any other girl in the X and Y anime, including those from the X and Y games (and I say "almost" because there's at least two girls who wouldn't work as Ash's travelling companions due to their own character) and it would have gone pretty much the same way as it did, presently. Same if the player avatar character in the X and Y games who didn't get chosen to represent the player didn't show up in the main story.
And honestly. Every female travelling companion, before and after her, came across as more human than her. Especially when you consider that they weren't introduced in manners similar to self-inserts, nor did they come across as boring as such. Same can be said for her other official counterparts, especially Yvonne Gabena (who is literally a better-written version of Anime Serena).

The thing about Serena though... she basically was a fangirl of Ash. Misty at least stood up to Ash in a way that made him stronger. Most situations Serena goes through, Ash has already been through with Misty, so those moments feel like a rehash. If Misty were to have kissed Ash at the end of the Johto Saga, it would have felt more earned than Serena's Kiss.
She was also a forced retcon of Ash's past, shoehorning her into the Anime for BS reasons other than being the XY Female Protagonist.
It's not that I hate her, it's that she wasn't given a proper explanation for her existence as someone who knew Ash. It felt forced and I didn't like that. Serena is a great character on her own, but forcing her to have known as a kid was a bit much, especially since people auto-shipped her hard with Ash because of that.
It didn't feel earned at all. Though points for Serena for actually going for it.

Yeah, I grew up watching the Gen 5 anime dub, so there is bias here, but may I ask, am I the only one who actually really liked both Iris AND Cilan in the anime? Just to rub it in here's why
Iris: She's not the stereotypical female anime character you'd expect to see compared to the others, and I actually like her team more than Misty's because 1. Dragons are cool and 2. She actually has some form of variety. But really, she's so unique compared to the stereotype that's been shown off with characters like May, Dawn, and Serena. Also, I think the lack of shipping evidence is actually a good thing, because shipping is overrated.
Cilan: There's only two reasons to not like him. 1. He replaced Brock, and 2. He goes on and on about that conniseur (I have no idea how to spell that) stuff. But put it this way. It's a lot less annoying than hearing "THE FUTURE IS NOW THANKS TO SCIENCE" every freaking episode. I also like how he has the guts to use less popular Pokémon on his team, like Pansage and Stunfisk. On top of that, most of Ash's male friends aside from Brock are honestly kinda forgettable for me.
Interesting opinions there I grew up watching black and white too and yeah I prefer clemont than cilan if we're comparing those 2 plus I feel like ash and clemont have a brotherly relationship which Ash acting like the big brother I think that is cool. I find cilan ok and funny.

GALAXY NOVA u brave for this lol but I defo agree, May too me is kinda devoid of a personality, at least Dawn has her bitchy/diva moments, that help her get humbled and become more positive. May is honestly just kinda there, while she has her own emotional moments, most of it is just her crying, which while very sad to see (much sadder than Serena’s meltdown btw) that’s kinda all she does, she occasionally has her moments but it’s way rarer than Dawn, and that’s why imo Dawns better than May (and Serena as well tbh because even though Serena is cute, having a crush on ash isn’t a personality trait)

Iris was actually likeable to me. She’s my 2nd favorite female companion right behind Misty. Sure many people got annoyed with her “what a little kid” catchphrase but she was still a breath of fresh air. Iris proved herself to be a strong trainer because she always puts up a great fight in all her battles, she’s brave because of how she climbed up a clock tower to rescue the Gible she captured, has a good skill of finding good food in the wild & specializes in dragon types which we all know is one of the best typings. It’s also good that she has variety of typings in her team even though she wants to be a dragon master. Excadrill fits her team very well because it is part steel type so she has defense against ice and fairy types which are the 2 weaknesses of dragons. Overall in my opinion Iris was amazing & she was a perfect Misty clone. Fight me haters ;)
I actually love Iris.! She is the least sexualized pokegirl (besides Lana), and she had this "Tribal" feeling about her, sure she was little annoying sometimes, but so was Ash, Misty, May, Max, Dawn, and even Serena.! So I don't get the hate.

When will people learn that it's neither the size of your arsenal or how powerful it is, it's how you use it that counts. Look at Ash's current roster. 2 unevolved Pokemon (Rowlet and Meltan) 2 middle stage (Pikachu and Torracat) and one fully evolved. 5 Pokemon and yet before Meltan showed up to be captured, Ash had just the 4 and beaten all the Grand Trials. William Maya I felt that some of Misty’s anger toward Ash was justified; she had plenty of experience with Pokémon, Ash was a bit of a dolt, and Pikachu zapped her bike. That and she has a functioning brain. Not too sure why she was mad at Brock, but I’m assuming it’s for his most memorable trait.

Here's my ratings: Lillie has amazing character development. Mallow's backstory is kinda tragic. Lana is cool and adorable. Remember when she encountered a kyogre? She lost a performance and cut her hair, that’s not development that’s bad writing. Serena's final scene features a line where she talks about becoming stronger so that she could be a more attractive woman for Ash. It’s not wrong to like someone, but if you like them from the very start and only wanna better yourself to impress them then that’s a clear motive.

I get what you’re saying, but I still don’t agree with it. You could argue that Serena cutting her hair was bad writing, but how is that bad writing, yet Lillie being mean to her mother isn’t? What makes that bad writing is that Lusamine is actually a very nice mother in the anime, something she wasn’t in the games, and yet Lillie has to be such a whiny brat to her. And the way she changed into her Z-Powered forme when there was no reason to like in the games, that was also bad writing. So why only criticize and hate on Serena?

I think Dawn gets too little credit. Yeah, I think May's personal journey and development was more provoking, but I think that's because she was introduced in the same generation that contests were introduced. She was able to appreciate a brand new aspect of Pokemon battles and displays along with us.
Dawn on the other hand, is a bit underrated, because she is well versed in contests prior to becoming a coordinator herself, because the knowledge she attained from her mom. However, since she had that prior knowledge, this made her extremely cocky and unwilling to learn from others outside of her mom. This is an aspect that May lacked, because May was cooperative and willing to learn from others from the jump. She learned from Ash, Drew, Brock and other experienced coordinators every chance she had, because she had no prior knowledge. Dawn on the other hand, was humbled when her way backfired consistently and resulted in her bottoming out in a way that May never did. She had to completely reimagine herself and learn from the strengths and weaknesses of others.

Don’t agree with you about Iris. The B&W anime had a lot of problems that I put solely on the writers. Complaining about her Drilbur when she chooses to be come a Dragon master is like complaining to an Ice Pokemon master why they choose a Squirtle when they started.
Iris got along great with all kinds of Pokémon, and their is a good story in B&W how she met Drilbur then became a great battler, and then met Drayden. After that meeting she choose to work toward being a Dragon master.
I mean, Misty is a water pokemon trainer but her signature pokemon is arguably Togepi -a fairy type.

Agreed!! Iris is also skilled in finding good food in the wild & brave for saving the Gible she caught from falling off a clock tower. I’d say she deserves praise because she can do amazing things that the other companions cant do

BW was trash, and nearly completely killed my interest in the anime after I started watching it again since I loved the Gen5 games so much. Iris had a lot to do with it, as did Ash regressing into being completely inept.
Thank god XY/Z and SM brought some new life to the series, despite how controversial the latter is.
BW is the worst anime series for pokemon, Sun and Moon is up there maybe one of my top three.
I prefer the game Iris way more though.

I'd have had Ash win in Sinnoh, and then do a proper reboot of the series starting with either a new Ash in a separate continuity, or a whole new character entirely, starting out on their journey after being inspired by Ash, the new Champion of Sinnoh.

Finally someone who's not overhyped on sarena. Only good thing on her is her one sided crush with ash. While her character development is just bland and boring. May was the one who started that contest thingy while dawn is that one girl that surpasses the og. And serena just like copied their homeworks she just changed it a bit. People just get overhyped by that girl when she's clearly not even the best.

She called ash a kid a lot (even with stuff he genuinely didn't know like cursed body), which was annoying, almost all of her team disobeyed her (tho excadrill had a legit reason), and her Axew, Never, EVOLVED!! Even tho a) we know he wants to become a haxorus and b) that's precisely what Iris is supposed to b helping him become, not small and annoying as heck. He's cute, and his relationship with scraggy- was good, but that's all the props axew ever gets.

I don’t understand why so many people hates Iris. Her friendship between Ash was incredible, and their chemistry played very good together.
Yes, sometimes she was annoying, but does it make her bad character? No, if you ask me.
Dawn and May had the best growing as a character. When May started her adventure, she didin’t like Pokemon at all.
But later she had an amazing ship with her pokemon, like Eevee and Blaziken. And she had been one of the most famous trainers in the whole world.
Dawn was just a little kid, who didn’t know much about being a trainer. But later she growed to one of the best coordinators in the Sinnoh.
Best Wishes anime is the most nostalgic to me, I’ve watched it too much times..

Also you have to give Dawn props for not taking a back seat to Ash in the DP series, she was there front and center for the movie posters and even the promotional stuff in Japan. Heck she was actually featured in a Commercial with Ash. I would also say she was the one who had the best friend relationship with Ash. Ash was at his peak in DP and a lot of his neat tricks came from Dawn's contests. Not to mention Dawn was probably the person who has helped Ash train the most.
Serena for me was just ship bait. She literally only went out on her Journey for Ash... I don't know I guess I just didn't like the obvious crush on Ash? Sure she had this big character development but did she have to take up like 2 seasons of nothing? Also kinda lame those beauty pageants weren't even a thing in the games. ;-;
Thank uu i fully agree with this!! Dawn was the closest of the female companions with ash and they helped each-other grow and train each-other in a thought of way and iris is overhated!! She's a super cool dragon master with a dragonite and she can communicate with dragon type Pokemon on an amazing level which i think should go much more appreciated!! i also agree that serena was thought of more ship-bait, she does have character development but the whole crush on ash thing was way too obvious

Dawn's my favourite especially with the way she developed from confident, then depressed and back to a good kind of confidence. And she trains with Ash, they teach each other moves and I think she's the most powerful in terms of battle among all female companions. She's also very lively, her contest moves and techniques are actually quite inspiring, and it's good to see Sun and Moon Brock adapt counter shield to this day.
In terms of battle, Misty and May at a close second, no offence I'd put Serena as the last in terms of battle strength even though I like her 2nd favourite. Now that she's become a coordinator it'd be interesting to see whether she can handle contest battles, since her battle with Aria for example was quite sloppy I would say.
Misty is horrible. She is so mean to Ash for no reason.

Am I the only person who loves Max? I like his character development, and his rude know-it-all personality was developed into occasional sarcasm. (Though I realize people dont see the sarcasm, my point still stands) I get moments of rudeness and stuff, but there are episodes and sections of movies that really show his development. (Like befriending a deoxys in that 2 part episode, saving a ralts, befriending a shuppet, etc etc jirachi) I remember seeing an arguement about the shuppet episode thing saying "Max is so bratty, he ran away from his sister and played a trick on them that could've killed them" However it wasn't considered that he ran away because May had said she never wanted a brother like him (geez man that's harsh) and he also said something like "My sister really likes this torchic so you cant have it" when faced alone with team rocket. It shows that he does care about them even though other characters may not return those feelings. My last point is short and sweet, he's just a kid. Every kid has those sarcasm moments, especially around the age he appears to be in the anime
Sorry for my rant, but as Ive been seeing more and more people thinking negatively of Max, I really just want to make a statement. Even if it doesnt go far, I'd be happy to hear I changed at least a single person's mind.
