Corvette C5 Z06 | Best Sports Car for $20,000?

- Опубліковано 13 чер 2024
- We review the 2001 - 2004 Chevy Corvette C5 Z06 and why it may be the best value in the used sports car market. We discuss the best and worst features and why you would choose it over something like a BMW M3, Honda S2000, Miata or Nissan 370Z.
With the excitement over the C8, picking up an older Vette has never been a better option.

Murica, hell yeah
Speaking of Applebee's, that is where we are going for New Years Eve dinner. (:
Manual. Rear wheel drive. 50/50 balance. 400 hp. Pop up headlights. What's not to love?!?!!
Nico Jones and it’s a V8
So it’s a win win win win
Squeaks and Rattles < Crackles and Pops
Pop up headlights are a con for me. They look bad IMO and theyre horrible for aero at night. They look great closed because theyre non existent, besides the nostalgia im not a fan
@@peytonschmidt1116 yes sir, small block too!
@@JDJD-mw9rr yeah not a fan of the look when up but when closed it looks so sleek. Plus, who is driving this car at night. These are show, track or canyon carvers.
The dumps are to drown out the creaking plastic inside.
LOL
My c5z has zero rattles or squeaks in the interior. Must be broken center console mounts where there are 2 bolts. People overtotque them and crack it.
Man, the dumps were so badass that it mustve come as a factory option.
Tood Anderson Yep, FRC's tend to have a lot less rattles and leaks.
Step 1: Locate garbage can. Step 2: Place C5 interior into said garbage. Step 3: Track car. The horrendous cheap ass GM interior can't disappoint you if it doesn't exist anymore.
Just go to 5:26. Mark is going to win an Oscar for that one. For just a fleeting moment, I thought this review was momentarily a magnum opus of film making.
A magnum opus of who’s filmmaking?

Ha! I drive a 4th gen Camaro, the Vette interior is an upgrade!
Lol same here. We're used to it
I drive a 4th gen Trans Am. The whole time they were criticizing the interior I was thinking whats so bad about it?
@@cynicalsayonara7169 I bet vette owners don't have to worry about their 5 foot long dash cracking lol
I was the same way when I got a grand prix GTP after having a 3rd gen firebird. I was like damn this is the future, heads up displays and sport mode and real audio woohoo! Then I started driving some new Lexus' and the quality difference is astonishing.
at least the c5 is better than the c4... I don't want to touch anything in those for fear that it will crumble.
The greatness of the c5 is evident in the very fact that people look at it today and complain about some items (interior for example) then compare it to much newer vehicles. It was far ahead of its time and still today is a fantastic sports car. It will never please the anti-V8 crowd and I’ll never understand why. It gets better MPG than most chain saw engine powered “sports cars”, while performing better and sounding better. It’s a car from two decades ago that is a killer deal in today’s market.
Is it relaiable if you service it regularly and do not overheat it? I'm looking for reliable replacement, rather investment that will go up in price with low mileage.
@@mininovaq they are very reliable. The ls1 is a bulletproof motor. The entire car is pretty much a safe bet.
S2000 came out in '00, E36 M3 came out in '95, and the E46 M3 and 350z are hardly modern cars. The C5Z is an amazing car, the interior is atrocious. An s2000 interior looks like a luxury car in comparison.
@@DoctorMotorcycle my son used to have an s2000. Interior was very comparable. HVAC controls were outdated, but the speedometer cluster was cool. Reminded me of the digital that used to be in my Mercury Cougar. The car was gutless as hell though.
I traded an 00 s2k for an 03 z06. Yes the vettes interior is worse and the engine doesn't have as much character but there's a reason all my videos are either c6 zr1 or grand sport. Once you drive a c5/c6 nothing else competes in the price range for overall performance/reliability

My dad bought a used '04 Z06 about 12 years ago and has been using it as a daily ever since. He's around 100k miles, beats the hell out of it and has only had to do basic maintenance. Definitely a great value.
The interior was built with recycled Happy meal toys...C5 Cavalier 😂
Or equivalent to 2019 Toyotas. Man the Akio Toyoda years are the worst. Missing early Toyota quality
And I thought it was lego blocks, however I think legos are a more quality material.
@@cargueone1971 They can afford to cheap out now, they already proved themselves
@@666cemetaryslut proved themselves? You're talking to someone whose family owned Toyotas for 50 years. That's unacceptable to sell cheapness at premium prices
Carlos Guevara yeah but there was the IS F which lead the way for RC F, GS F, and an upcoming LC F
And there was the LFA which is like one of Toyota’s best creations especially that immortal V10
They also brought back the GT86 and GR Supra
Oh and they still got the Land Cruiser the most robust, reliable, and one of the last simplistic vehicles
It’s certainly not exactly the best of times for Toyota but it’s still good
Picked up a C5 Z06 a few months ago. Gotta say, I'm impressed all the way around. Once I swapped out the stock seats for some Corbeau's, I'm honestly at a loss to find any complaints. Love it love it love it.
In the exact same boat as you. Swapped Corbeau A4s in and it transformed the car.
And then I put in headers. And a short shifter. And DRM Bilstein sports. Etc etc etc.
Those seats worth it?
@@stewpittt Absolutely, if you're planning on doing any serious cornering or track days! And, they look almost like a stock seat. I went with the Evolution X's, but I've heard good things about the A4's too.
Hows the reliability? How quick is it?
@@whosyourdaddy00 haven't had a sniff of a single issue so far. Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance.
Quick enough that really power isn't what you want on the track - more tire and better pads/rotors are all I've felt the need to do.
People who buy this car do NOT care about the interior.
Exactly. I fully expected the interior to be bad. My roof rattles all the time in top of everything else. But I don't care. I drive this car every day. Get good gas mileage. Learned to drive stick with it. And the whole reason I bought it was because of its very purpose. Fast driveable car with rwd, V8 engine, and a manual transmission.
It's a kind of circular logic. It's so bad that the only ones who buy it are ones that don't care.
people who by GMs do not care about interiors... because they are a lower class level than the average

I'd gladly give up a better interior for that sound. Heck it could have 50 less HP and I'd still take it.
My ls1 c5 sounded similar with just a borla axle back
Manual Vettes always sound better
Tupperware built the interior of my 03 ZO6 but it was one of the most fun cars I've ever owned. That's including my "exotic" cars. It was reliable, fast, handled like a go cart and got almost 30 mpg on the highway. I sold it to a white New Balance and tube socks wearing older guy who promptly wrecked it.......dunno if he was an Applebees regular though.
What are your exotics and why is it better?
GM knows their target audience. The squeaks and rattles don't matter because they're drown out when the car is driven correctly. Todd's character exists all over this world. That's why it's hilarious and also explanatory.
David Frendo or they’re so old they can’t hear the rattles anyway. 🤷🏻♂️
@@JustinSeara Facts
It was nice of GM to leave such enormous gaps between the interior trim pieces to make it easier to cover everything in alcantara.
Simon Coles yup
the interior is crap enough to make even a 350Z interior look good?! Yikes. Luckily the interior really doesn't matter in a Corvette. Just change the seats to a better aftermarket alternative and you're golden.
The interior is not to important for sports car, but the body panel plastic/fiberglass is clunky. If you can get over that you are good to go.
That typical plastic GM creaking is abominable. I would have a hard time getting over it, reminds me of those old Pontiac grand ams.
I had a Grand Am and GM uses the same materials on this car. I was debating years ago on if I should buy one and then I found a 06 Pontiac GTO. Ten times better interior then the Corvette grand am interior.
the good news about the z06 is that you're going so fast you can't look away from the road at the shit interior. also a loud exhaust will cover up creaks
@jonny j the quality of GM interiors was infamously poor when the C5 was made - Corvettes are "affordable" for sports cars but they've never been cheap so the interior quality is way, way below the price point the car was sold at when new. Now while I dislike the trend towards ultra luxury in sports car interiors of late the C5 struggles to meet the most basic standards of a cheap economy car. I can deal with poor quality plastics but squeaks like the C5 has are unacceptable even given age and wear. That said it wouldn't be a deal breaker and I'd still love to have a C5 but if I bought one I'd budget for some cosmetic upgrades to the cabin.
Jack and Marc together in the driving segment just always makes me so happy. You are the perfect combo!

My dad has an '01 from new. He has well over 100 track days on same motor and trans. When it was new we'd routinely beat new 911 turbos. Can't do that anymore unless driver is inexperienced. But with only suspension and brake mods it still holds it's own.
I really love the fact you guys put cars on a lift. It sets you apart from every other channel out there (that and the great filming/dialog/writing). Truly, thank you for all the undercarriage and suspension shots in all your videos.

I’m one of the few who actually likes the interior. Heck, I even like that little cup holder, it holds an iced coffee just fine. No tech, just basic, spartan interior. It’s about the driving experience and this car has it in spades.
Its worse than it looks. Its parts bin gm. Same stuff from a minivan, junk.
ABeans07 I guess if you don’t own one or don’t want to own one it really doesn’t matter. Plenty of people out there who don’t give a shit about the “parts bin” interior. To each his own 👍🏼
I mean I don't mind a spartan interior, but a lotus is spartan but still doesn't feel low quality.
BigfootUnibrowMan it’s GM from the 90’s, no argument there. I don’t think they had any idea how to put together a quality interior 😂 Luckily they knew how to create the performance part of the vehicle.
If you think the cup holder is fine, you just haven't accelerated hard enough with hot coffee in it.
Carp interior = strip everything out, add racing buckets, racing wheel, racing doorcards - job done!
Because that's legal every where
@@alexstromberg7696 Put everything back on a technical inspection, that's how I do it, because it's not legal either where I live.

After owning multiple C4's/C5's/C6's if I had to choose I'd take the C5 by far over the earlier and later generation vettes. The C4 was a knee bruising, leaky electrical mess and flex creak machine of a car. The C5 on the other hand was light years ahead of anything before it, in fact well ahead of it's time. With it's all aluminum torque tube to rear transaxle configuration, hydroformed aluminum frame, worlds first getrag differential and dual fuel tank design. Corvette's going forward retained basically the exact same configuration starting with the C5 in 1997 all the way to the C7 in 2019. Not to mention the C5 was the widest front engine Corvette ever made with the lowest drag co-efficiency and amazingly clean front end with hideaway headlights and no front grill. The C6 was actually a step back from the C5 as it released during the economic bailout period so it even reused C5 parts such as the differential and suspension while new parts were pulled from Cobalt, Saturn steering wheel with small hard to read and cheap looking HVAC modules, defective stereo headunits, fade prone headlights, fuel pumps that are impossible to access. Don't get me started on the C6's primitive keyless entry push start security system, rattling roof panels that delaminate and blow right off the car. To simply complain for 20 minutes straight about the interior's plastic is pretty myopic but I'll totally agree that the C5 seats totally suck.
How can you cite all these problems with the C4 and C6 and then gloss over the C5 like it's the best of the bunch? The C5 was the one built on a shoestring budget with lots of compromises in design and it shows. C5's have so many quality related issues, too many to even start listing here. But I guess we're glazing over the radio out of a Silverado and the utter parts bin nature of the C5...there were lots of issues with those "ahead of its time" things you mentioned. At best I'd argue the C7 maybe broke the mold of especially poor quality from GM, but I'll say it only because I didn't look that much into them so I could stand wrong on that.
Sounds like ur bias toward the c5. C6 is a step up in every way and c5 has its issues as well both I believe are the last true corvettes.
Great video, I love the Corvette C5. Bought mine 4 years ago and it's amazing. Greetings from Germany 😊
The titanium exhaust more than makes up for the interior.
I checked out a c5 vette last week with only 78k miles on it in mint condition,(alot of these cars were well maintained because of the type of people that bought them) they were only asking $12 thousand for it. The interior actually appeals to me considering no car manufacturer has perfected a long lasting, premium, affordable interior.
I’ve literally owned every single one of those cars he mentioned around 3:40 ... honestly, I never had a problem with the interiors of these. I didn’t think the others were much better. And *none* of those had the interior space of the C5; passenger compartment *or* storage space.
Dual-zone climate control (with *amazing* a/c), HUD, MPH/KPH gauges (needle actually changes), tons of other tech/info adjustments, cool ass feature where if you lock your keys in the car, you can shake it to unlock, soft-touch dash (not even my late 90’s Porsche had that), Bose audio was actually better than any of the others, and got louder as speed increased, etc etc.
As a former Z06 owner I agree completely, these were ahead of their time for the market position. However, you are not promoting a YT channel as a wannabe influencer trying to inflate the click rate and time spent watching these two weigh in on another subject they have little to no experience with... Your videos just keep getting better and better. Great group of guys with each their own comedic input.
They are judging the interior, despite literally every car at this price point has a worse interior. Also, its more than 20 years old, and they expect it to not creak, and they act like it's the worst thing in the world when a 2018 S-class is more creaky and its only 3 years old.

C5 being my favorite Corvette "exterior wise", I've always wondered how much it would cost to put a C7 interior into a C5.
This is the best video you guys have ever done. Just hilarious, informative, and awesome.
What an amazing video - thanks guys, for making videos for us schmucks who actually have budgets.
Side note, I was considering a C6 for Summer/Track - this helped, but if you wanted to make a video on the C6 I would't hate it!
As a C5 vette owner, the intro made my day.
Me too. I've had a C5 (both coupes, both manuals) for about 8 years now, my current one for 5 (an '04, the other was a '98). I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. I was DYING laughing. I laughed through the entire video honestly. Except for the exhaust sounds.... THAT just made me smile and smile.... my '04 has a set of headers with full Borlas on it and it does sound good.... but man when he flipped that switch!

It would be cool if you can review a c4 Zr1. Not too many out there and you're humor is hilarious.
It’s so crazy to see you driving on all of the same roads that I do. Love the videos.
i have that same jacket, i love my captains hats and hawaiian shirts. a c5 or c6 Corvette is my next bigger purchase in 2020. You guys are so on point, it's sublime. THANK YOU.
i actually bought it because i like the interior, the layout overall to me personally is much better than the c6, I leather wrapped my dash, doors and center console and its just perfect.
I had a 98 C5 back in the early 2000s, coming from a Camaro I thought it was really nice. Since then I've owned Caddy's and BMW's and, overall, the quality of interiors have improved greatly. But the C5 was a very affordable Corvette, and while people always say it's cheap... but. It REALLY was cheap compared to anything else on the market, the only thing close could be a much less powerful Porsche Boxster, and if you go back to the late 90s, it's not exactly like they had great interiors either.
Owned 2 C5's and both had perfect seats when I sold them. Seats were great for me. The C6 in my driveway has a replacement seat at 20,000 miles that I am not even optimistic about. To add insult to injury, GM stopped making the C6 upper leathers. If I could have gotten 150 more hp/torq out of my C5 Z, I would still be driving it today. My favorite car of all time, except for how you have to work it to get to the power band.
Thanks a lot! I was waiting for the video on C5 for long time!

i had a 02 Z06 and I loved that car. The handling was awesome and it put the power down really well. I hated the stock shifter on it and thought the steering wheel was a tad to big plus the seats didn't do great to hold you in place. If you can pick these up for cheap and swap out that stuff its really a great car. The interior never bothered me because in those days with GM you know what your getting with the interior.

Hay guys love your input and thoughts on the Corvette Z06. After watching the review, I may consider a Corvette as a possible weekend toy. I would love to see you do more reviews of the 90's and early 2000's sports cars. Way more interesting than another SUV/CUV review, which isn't your fault just the current market. While current cars are engineered better today thanks to modern computing and materials (including less cheap plastics), I think this era was so memorable because of the number and variety of sporty and sports cars available. Truly an awesome era in motor vehicles that will never be seen again. It would be interesting to have you both continue to review these sports cars including the fine high performance Japanese versions from this time. Thanks, love your more educated reviews and knowledgeable perspectives provided in your videos!!! Much more interesting than quirks and pulling on visors.
it came down to this or the S2000 for me. I went with the S2000 because it's just more fun to drive on the street. You really need a track to let the Z06 loose without getting arrested
Nice to see that you guys had the same thoughts on the car I did. Those seats are a fucking joke! I've never driven a car so fast with so little bolstering
Also thanks for making this video. Old sports cars people can afford are so much cooler to see videos on than the newest audi etc. I hope you do more.
That's the problem with newer cars. You can't drive them balls to the wall on the street. Every sports or muscle car is fast enough to get you in big trouble.
lol, this is coming from someone who prefers S2ks over c5s: it's sooooooooooooooo slow compared to the vette in terms of acceleration. If you're into performance whatsoever, the s2k will be a complete snooze fest in a month or so of ownership. Sure, in the canyons it's great fun, but most won't find it nearly as exciting as a c5 on the road overall.
I personally would rather have an S2k also, especially an 02-03. That is, if you can find one with decent miles at anywhere near 20K.
Age and Treachery agreed. I only have a 2014 v6 Accord coupe MT, and i can’t run through the first couple gears without being reckless. I think that’s why the s2000 is a blast because you have to earn it. Still love the C5z06 tho

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
You should read the book, "All Corvettes are Red" You will understand that is a miracle that this car was ever made, and the effort from the people on the Corvette team to put out the best product with the limited resources GM was giving them. It is actually a pretty fantastic car for all the road blocks that Corvette team dealt with.
Great post, takes me back to the 90's when a colleague had one of those point and shoot machines.
Everyone likes to say leaf spring like it is a stack of steel rusty springs on a 3/4 ton pickup. It is a light composite that works quite well IMO.

You can hear the interior squeaks as they’re driving and talking. There has to be a way to eliminate that or at least minimize it, besides totally gutting the interior. The rest of it seems like a great deal. I bet the cooling and oil problems can be easily fixed.

The C5 Z06 LS6's "Batwing" oil pan is generally considered better for track use than the LS2 and early LS3 setups (before they went dry sump). Just read the complaints from the SCCA guys before GM gave up and just went dry-sump for all.

Just please save up to get Valve springs replaced
Only around $900 to have shop install them , because the stock yellow Valve springs would crack , retailer keepers would fall out and the fucking Valve would drop in the cylinder 😕😱
Other then that ,the valve train geometry, block , pistons, bearings and oiling on Ls6 was all good 👍

I switched my valve springs myself in about 4 hours and cost me under $25
@@moiseslopez7898 understand the E46 M3 will feel a 1995 Corolla compared to the C5Z. Those Beemers are dog slow and handle like a conversion van. But it is a different type of car of course and should be a great cruising car.
RCFourFive yeah I would really have to adjust to that power delivery as since its quite peaky and it’s a taller coupe. That being said it is a nice car with usable rear seats compared to my Fbody
As a 27-year I bought my first Corvette, a C5 convertible with Z06 wheels on it. Was pretty much like the intro. The chicks working the McDonald's drive-thru were always impressed. Since the early 2000s however, it's become common for people in fancy cars to go through McDonald's drive thrus, but back then, it was still a big deal.
Stumbled here in the Z06 abyss that is apparently rampant on YT. Guess it is cause I am picking one up this week, yup! This was a good vid! Don't know you guys but will follow now. Out of the myriad of these same videos you guys kept me tuned in. Yes, the acting was cute and I enjoyed the hell out of the stereotypes. But, the meat was there next to the potatoes. You called out what is wrong, but you also called out was is so right. This car is designed for one purpose and that is why I am going out of my way to get one instead of a C6 or newer Vette. Cheers to a great vid!
Can we also get a review of that blue C7 we keep seeing in some reviews.
Boomer won't let him because of fear of swirlies.
The tall engineer dude owns it I think, it's a C7 Grand Sport.
Corvette chief engineer at the time (Dave Hill) took some inspiration from Miata to make the C5 more enjoyable to drive....and it shows.
Pure gold Mark. Just pure gold.
The intro and 5:20-5:40 are the best parts. As always a great review, keep them coming ^ _ ^
I’m a weird dude, I always liked the interior. I’ll admit I’ve got a lot of nostalgia for 90’s GM though. I hated the C6 interior and exterior, then again I hated early 00s GM. Go figure! C7 is great, they really did well with it. C8 looks amazing too since they really pushed it in the techie way they used to in the 80s/90’s.
the c7 interior is corvette bliss..That c7 was the best interior with a fanatstic exterior and a killer exhaust sound...the epitome of front engine rear drive vetteness
Everyone forgets the truth about this car, the power, the handling, the rear drive, manual, v8. GM didnt care about the interior this car was made to go fast and beat cars alot more expensive.
😀 the intro to this is so funny! Great vid as always guys
best intro you guys have done
Intro was great, but the rage machine pure Savage Geese mode was so hilarious!
Let me grab and squeeze parts of the interior that doesn’t need to be touched in the first place 😂🤦🏽♂️.
Isiah Gomez That’s exactly what I was thinking. Who just drives around and vigorously starts shaking random interior parts? lol.
The opening sequence was gold
Excellent video.. great job guys.
The steering of my 2000 vette can be tilt and ajust front to back
