@@ARDIZsq that's fine, I just take issue with someone stating what customs "shouldn't use" as it there's some rule against things like large amounts of detail or use of colour outside of Lego's current palette. You're perfectly welcome to your preferences and to an extent I agree, especially when some customs do go way over the top, though I am still partial to some of the detailed ones
There’s definitely a difference with custom molds when it comes to new helmets for Star Wars and whatever that ultron and mark 1 are. They lose the lego look and touch. Mini figs aren’t supposed to be 1 to 1 of movie characters. They’re stylized versions. If you want proper height or design buy action figures not lego
I can’t deny that Ultron minifigure is very impressive, but at a certain point it stops feeling like a Lego figure and more like an action figure if that makes sense. With all of these movie accurate details it just makes his claw hands that Lego characters have look really out of place. I don’t want to bash the people that made the figure, it’s really good, but I think the Lego aesthetic/style was kind of lost somewhere in translation. I’m not against detailed figures, and I do think the official Ultron figure should have a little more bulk to it, and I’m all for seeing Lego figures with more detail, but I think this is a little too far away from the Lego style
The problem is detail because lego has a very specific detail and these custom details are so intricately molded,it almost looks like an action figure on top of all the bold black lines that lego loves being lost. The problem isnt new molds, its the amount if detail in said mold
To me, the biggest issue with trying to adapt a character like Ultron into a minifigure… is using a minifigure body. Ultron isn't a person, he's an AI with a robot body. His minifigure should be specifically made that way, like lego does for the Battle Droids for Star Wars. Don't go all out with the robot feel, but enough to where you're not limited by the two inaccurate size legs Lego has produced. Still use a minifigure head and arms, but everything else shouldn't be in the same proportions or design as a plain minifigure since Ultron doesn't fit the base human silhouette. He's taller, his shoulders are huge, he's got a larger upper torso, etc, so you shouldn't use a plain minifigure body for characters like him. That is one thing lego needs to improve on; adapting humanoid characters who don't fit the general human silhouette at all, like the Lizard and Ultron.
At a certain point there is to much detail and it looses the lego charm at that point just get a marvel legends or stat wars black series figure for your displays.
In my opinion, the LEGO style is a little cartoony. You’re not going for completely realistic or high detail because (as seen in 2004/5 Harry Potter sets) it looks weird and off putting. It’s why some minifigs look good with non printed legs and why we don’t get shoe printing that often - it’s not necessary.
Ah revenge of the brick the most what the fuck thing lego ever did with star wars. It makes clone wars heads look like the mona lisa. Still love the short in a so bad it is good way tough.
I think custom prints are fine, as long as they follow the official art direction. With molds, it too often devolves into things we see here. For me, if a custom looks like it could come in an official set, it's fine.
I thought the lizard captured the lego feel while still being something new, but I know alot of people don't feel that way. Can we at least agree that the legs are cool? If the rest was simplified, but the legs stayed the same, would that be okay?
I like custom figures as novelties, but I really don't think they're the way Lego should be going. Moulded pieces are used when necessary like with ahsoka's tendrils or hagrid's body, but the pieces are always designed in a way that keep with Lego's more simplistic style. Things like the Ultron head and the lizard legs, while more accurate to the source material, just aren't in keeping with Lego. Lego isn't supposed to be fully accurate, it's a stylized version of something we're familiar with, it's its own style entirely so I don't see why we should take that away from it by trying to make it more accurate by giving figures specific pieces that take away from the Lego look.
I don't like intricate moulded details for arms and legs and even torsos. A chest plate with printed detail looks great but a chest plate with moulded pipes and wires is too much. For me at that point, it doesn't look like Lego anymore. There's a balance of getting accurate to the character and IP to a degree but the Lego style and io needs to come through otherwise I may as well just buy a action figure and not this weird in-between. I love custome moulds for hair pieces and helmets but I still need them to fit Legos style, so no overly sharp points and all that. To me excessive moulding on arms legs and torsos end up looking cheap as it looks like there's no consistent identity. It's like if Minecraft started using hexagons and pyramid shapes with human shaped hands and feet. It started to look uncanny and budget made despite technically being more detailed
I think Lego could really stand to benefit if they introduced a torso piece like the one Mr. Incredible has in the game, where it fits on standard minifigure legs and isn't as big as a big fig, but is still noticeably larger than that of your standard figure. Obviously, they'd use it for Mr. Incredible were they ever to release more sets from that theme, but I think it'd help with a number of other themes; for example in this video, I'm slightly bothered by the Lizard minifigure just because he is too small, in my opinion. It doesn't feel right that Lizard, who is absolutely huge in the movie, is the exact same size as Spidey in the set, so giving him a different torso would really help differentiate them, in my opinion. Not sure it would help with Ultron, but I think he could just use a special helmet and shoulder mold-he's big, obviously, but he doesn't really strike me as needing to be significantly taller than the standard minifig. Obviously, they should keep the big figs for characters like Hulk and Thanos, but I think it'd be useful to have an intermediate size for figures.
i think the main issue is that the customs have a diffrent design language then lego. how to distil and understand that is a large task i must say. an example of customs making new molds but still looking the part is in the world of kenner starwars figures. there is a guy who goes by the name stan solo who has absorbed the design language of these older kenner toys and makes customs that fit in perfectly with the older figures. learning what angles what colors what level of detail lego uses and much more would be needed to make customs that look the part
What made LEGO Constraction so appealing was that it's the art of using LEGO pieces to build a character model how you desire. It's something that isn't possible with the Minifigure, given how they usually aren't the focus build. But Constraction themes like _BIONICLE_ and _Hero Factory_ strive in making the characters the builds. And LEGO sets are usually supposed to be a building toy, not a near-pre-assembled action figure. (The CMF sets basically have to rely on blind-packaging and repeat purchases to even make a profit from all of the new molds, and stop specific figures from shelf-warming or getting scalped.) It's just a shame that people still have the sentiment that "Constraction isn't real LEGO", "BIONICLE isn't real LEGO", and "LEGO should stay in their lane and not make action figures", yet, they'll obsessively rage over Minifigures. And these brick-built action figures and mechs for Minifigures we are getting with today's LEGO Super Hero sets aren't cutting it out for me. For anyone reading this, try opening up BrickLink Studio and build some Constraction sets like the 2001 _BIONICLE_ Toa Mata, or the 2012 _Hero Factory_ sets. Then try using those Technic, _BIONICLE,_ and _Hero Factory_ pieces to build your own character.

I like the customs that print on Lego parts. I feel like most customs are made of a material that doesn't even look like Lego. Usually, they just overdo it to the point where they look like action figures in the *loose style of a Lego minifigure
I think there needs to be a torso like the Hagrid coat piece that is shorter. The Hagrid arms are very useful for adding bulk and a wider silhouette, but their current uses are rather limited. A special torso could have wide application and reuse for figures in between minifig and big-fig size. It could even be used with both standard legs and long legs.
When they start looking like action figures with over exaggerated detail, just go buy some minimates if you want detailed Lego-like figures or better yet go the whole hog and buy a marvel legend. LEGO figs were always supposed to be simple, this demand for overspecifed detail is what brings the figs down.
If people want to buy miniatures then they'll buy miniatures. The people buying detailed customs are doing it because that's what they want. Quit trying to tell them what you think Lego is "supposed" to be and let people enjoy things.
@@snoopy4749 you didn't just give your opinion though, you told everyone that likes these kinds of customs to instead buy something different that they might not even be looking for, and then made an objective statement about what Lego is "supposed to be". Equally I can ask why you're crying about customs having lots of detail when no one's telling you that you have to buy them. Your opinion is that they're not for you because you prefer a simpler style. That's fine, but that's where the validity of your comment ends.
@ are you ok? Did I hurt your feelings? 😆 I don’t understand why you’re so upset (and you most definitely are) about what I said. Perhaps my words stung you a bit more than you’re willing to let on, which is completely ok you btw. Yes, i stand by what I said if you want overly detailed versions of characters just go get actual figures with said detail. LEGO dogs that start looking like bulky statues just lose all point in being a minifigure, plus most customizers charge ridiculously high prices that, for the the same price you could just buy an action figure with detail, sculpt and accessories that are designed for that particular line.
@@snoopy4749 putting "and you most definitely are" in brackets doesn't actually make me upset you know. I can take issue with what you're saying without it getting to me, you're way overestimating how much your opinion matters to me. And how about you don't tell other people how to spend their money? Seeing as they want customs, not action figures (should be obvious from the fact they're buying customs not action figures - try to keep up), then let them. What you think they'd be better off doing isn't relevant, since you're not them. Why are you crying that other people are buying things they want, simply because those things don't fit your arbitrarily restrictive take on what Lego "should" be? You're so upset at these little pieces of plastic existing you feel the need to tell other people that they shouldn't be buying them because you personally don't like them. Think about that next time you try to make a snippy comment about me somehow being upset here.
The problem with customs can sometimes be that, with all that detail, are the customs still even usable? Also, are they fragile? I have a been of offbrand lego and a lot of the minifigs have hands that can just barely attach to normal lego which I find really annoying. This video has some great points about what lego should be doing better and it should be lego doing this because their plastic is so much more durable than what customs usually have.
I think the reason that customs don't work is that customs don't feel like they can be as easily mass produced with more complex shapes and molds and also applying too much detail. Lego tends to simplify details to fit their aesthetics, and a lot of customs fail in that regard.
I think there is definitely a line in the sand where u have to choose between minifigs or action figures everything u said here is correct about how Lego would do it differently and all but i disagree with on those aftermarket fig as I do not like the look of them cause they stray way too far away from Lego's look. U should just collect lego and action figures, it's not like its too expensive 👀🤣😂😜
People get way overly sensitive about detail when it comes to minifigures. If anything deviates from their precious little bubble of what they personally think "feel like" lego or doesn't look exactly like something that would come in an official set, the amount of vitriol directed towards it, even though literally no one is forcing them to buy it, is insane. Heads up to the bunch of you that are parroting "just buy action figures", or some similar shit: the people that buy these customs buy them because that's what they want - highly detailed custom minifigures. They're not buying action figures instead because that's not what they want. You're all welcome to your individual preferences, but for something like this it's enough to just say "not my thing" and walk away. Blabbering on about what lego is "supposed to be" like all to many ultra purists like to do is just dumb.
Even when the Marvel CMF Captain America (Sam) was revealed, I didn't like it because in my eyes they were over-detailed. To someone like me, a lot of these Lego customs are not it. Like, at all. Rather they look ugly to my eyes.
kinda losing my mind here with some of the gatekeeping talk. These should exist since people like them, please dont be so self centered just because YOU dont like it.
Honestly, I think these custom figures look horrible as hell. Detail is nice, but too detail and it's like, fuck imagination, just buy an action figure if you want 100% accuracy at this point.
My rules for buying customs are: They need to use proper colours, no over detailing, no printing where Lego wouldn’t, no moulds not made by Lego unless they are slight modifications that stay in the style (eg, GCC Arc Trooper helmet is a modified Lego helmet), you can’t just break Lego’s rules (knees and elbows on figs, gore, easily breakable parts, etc), they need to still focus on making it look like Lego (most customs are too much like action figures).
i would agree with the abs plastic thing, but i don't think pad printing is all that much better than something like uv printing. i own many of firestar toys' spiderverse minifigures and unless they are under very heavy lighting, you can't really tell that they're printed in a different way from lego's own minifigures.
I like a lot of custom printed minifigs, but 99% of the custom molded stuff is unnecessary and looks wrong imo. Pretty much all the custom stuff you showed in this video is hideous to me lol minifigs/big figs have a sort of simplicity and charm to them that is lost when you try to make them too "accurate." If I want screen accuracy I'll buy an action figure.
personally I don't see a point to a lot of these customs, they're way too detailed and bulky compared to the "normal" lego style. In my opinion, lego should not be as "accurate as possible" to the movie, rather they should be stylized to fit the cartoony nature, because at some point why bother making them a minifigure in the first place. to me, simplicity is key when making new parts or pieces for minifgures
lol very subjective. your version of simplicity/too detailed is different from someone elses. you and I both know that but I'll be honest, if official Lego did this, many of the lego community wouldnt bat an eye or after a couple of days, wouldnt care anmore and except it, because its lego doing it. Its all really about the brand. CMF has more custom molds and even more detail, WE LOVE IT. Modular buildings and animals are getting more detailed, WE LOVE IT. Some other brand does it, BOOOOOOO. Its really just the, old man hates todays songs and the older man hates the old mans songs and so forth.
These figures are waaaaay too much overdetailed, i hate when they do that
I can’t deny that Ultron minifigure is very impressive, but at a certain point it stops feeling like a Lego figure and more like an action figure if that makes sense.
3:45 …🥶 can’t… Talk… Too… scary
$600 for a single minifigure is pure insanity.
ever heard of minimates? they're basically like more detailed legos like your Ultron there
To me, the biggest issue with trying to adapt a character like Ultron into a minifigure… is using a minifigure body.
Or if you really want screen accuracy just buy a hot toys figure
In my opinion, the LEGO style is a little cartoony. You’re not going for completely realistic or high detail because (as seen in 2004/5 Harry Potter sets) it looks weird and off putting. It’s why some minifigs look good with non printed legs and why we don’t get shoe printing that often - it’s not necessary.
These just look like that creepy LEGO Promo for Revenge of the Sith
~ Marco Rubio
Ah revenge of the brick the most what the fuck thing lego ever did with star wars. It makes clone wars heads look like the mona lisa. Still love the short in a so bad it is good way tough.
I feel like custom companies should try harder to make prints that more match legos style, and some of the custom moulded pieces feel too fake
I have been, and remain, a hater of all customs. They're all too far.
Not all of them but most do
I think custom prints are fine, as long as they follow the official art direction. With molds, it too often devolves into things we see here.
For me, if a custom looks like it could come in an official set, it's fine.
Anime figures arent that far. The best anime figures are in my opinion "wm blocks and tp brand". They arent like those in the video.
If the Lizad custom was in sand green, I think it would look slightly better than the official one
I don’t like the too detailed it gets the Lego feel
💀 the ultron face without helmet
What made LEGO Constraction so appealing was that it's the art of using LEGO pieces to build a character model how you desire.
It's something that isn't possible with the Minifigure, given how they usually aren't the focus build. But Constraction themes like _BIONICLE_ and _Hero Factory_ strive in making the characters the builds. And LEGO sets are usually supposed to be a building toy, not a near-pre-assembled action figure.
(The CMF sets basically have to rely on blind-packaging and repeat purchases to even make a profit from all of the new molds, and stop specific figures from shelf-warming or getting scalped.)
It's just a shame that people still have the sentiment that "Constraction isn't real LEGO", "BIONICLE isn't real LEGO", and "LEGO should stay in their lane and not make action figures", yet, they'll obsessively rage over Minifigures.
Never missing a TommyCfigs upload
That Lizard is one of the worst things I’ve seen 😭😭 more expensive does not mean better you got robbed my guy and you’re trynna cope
The legs are too big, the arms are too short, the color is off
I love the idea of extended legs with knees
I like the customs that print on Lego parts. I feel like most customs are made of a material that doesn't even look like Lego. Usually, they just overdo it to the point where they look like action figures in the *loose style of a Lego minifigure
It looks like a Bionicle, but in a minifig scale. This is definitely something LEGO would make, but only during the original run of Bionicle
The ultron looks like a megablock minifig with the jointed limbs
I think there needs to be a torso like the Hagrid coat piece that is shorter. The Hagrid arms are very useful for adding bulk and a wider silhouette, but their current uses are rather limited. A special torso could have wide application and reuse for figures in between minifig and big-fig size. It could even be used with both standard legs and long legs.
3:26 custom ultron looks like a mega minifig
I love seeing Bionicle/Hero Factory MOCs that look like they could be retail sets
@ lol the video is literally called “when do LEGO customs go too far?” to which I gave an answer, idk why you’re crying over my opinion.
Some people turn their Minifigures into megablock figures
personally i want them to use the nexo knights axl torso more it would make a great war machine for example
custom lego figures are practically moveable funko pops
if they arent lego like then you might as well just get action figures. the over abundance of molds and prints make it look nothing like lego
Is there any way to get the lizard figure now? I'd love to get it, but I can't find it anywhere
Ultron would be perfect with the antman helmet from endgame
If lego started making custom we'd had to pay the full price of a set just for the figure 😂
The diffrence between the star wars molds and these is one piece. Star wars molds are most of the time one piece but these are a lot more
where did you get that minifig?
The only figure I would buy from them would be the hulk figure as it looks way better and more to scale than legos version
I started cringing when Lego customizers started sculpting fingers and toes on minifigures...
2:01 wait, what? Is that real info? edit: I guess so, daddy's back.
For me, Ultron still keeps Lego style. He is more "detailed" as a normal person, so why not the same in minifigure format
Anyone have the link to the website where I get those?
Where is that custom ps4 Spiderman from?
My thoughts initially were just, damn he tall
As soo as it starts looking the slightest bit not like an official minifig, its gone yoo far IMO
ngl it depends on who the character is
Even when the Marvel CMF Captain America (Sam) was revealed, I didn't like it because in my eyes they were over-detailed.
To someone like me, a lot of these Lego customs are not it. Like, at all.
Rather they look ugly to my eyes.
This one looks a lot better than the lizard
how much was the ultron figure?
the original about £15, the Custom about £80
kinda losing my mind here with some of the gatekeeping talk.
Are you still gonna make the astromechs like r2kt? That’s why I subbed!
It’s like a old mega blocks awesome.
If its not using pad printing and ABS plastic, then the custom is bad.
i would agree with the abs plastic thing, but i don't think pad printing is all that much better than something like uv printing. i own many of firestar toys' spiderverse minifigures and unless they are under very heavy lighting, you can't really tell that they're printed in a different way from lego's own minifigures.
On one hand I hate it on the other hand I just hate MCU Ultron's design so ah well :p
Its too far when i say so
Too far, but too great
I like a lot of custom printed minifigs, but 99% of the custom molded stuff is unnecessary and looks wrong imo. Pretty much all the custom stuff you showed in this video is hideous to me lol minifigs/big figs have a sort of simplicity and charm to them that is lost when you try to make them too "accurate." If I want screen accuracy I'll buy an action figure.
It's not that why not give ever character needs them it would be weird if ever character go a unique mold they only give it to characters who need it
Maybe they should try dumbing the figures down a little and making more of them so the trust-fund buttheads don’t buy them all up for status symbols.
kratos.
Personally, i think ANYTHING is too much. What i like about lego is the simplicity it uses in making the minifigs, yet so recognizable and cool
When do customs go too far?
When they're made (I'm a purist guy)
I'm glad someone finally shined a light on this because I was thinking this for ages
You very handsome😊❤
the custom ones look amazing
That's a action figure not miniefigure
personally I don't see a point to a lot of these customs, they're way too detailed and bulky compared to the "normal" lego style. In my opinion, lego should not be as "accurate as possible" to the movie, rather they should be stylized to fit the cartoony nature, because at some point why bother making them a minifigure in the first place.
to me, simplicity is key when making new parts or pieces for minifgures
Yeah all of these look ugly to me...
thats the beauty of subjective opinions, what you dont like others can love
Then just get action figures lol, why restrict yourself to a minifigure if you want more
Ngl I prefer knockoffs than actual legos they have better designs imo
all customs are bad💀 sry they js not lego🫤
lol very subjective. your version of simplicity/too detailed is different from someone elses. you and I both know that but I'll be honest, if official Lego did this, many of the lego community wouldnt bat an eye or after a couple of days, wouldnt care anmore and except it, because its lego doing it. People should just say what they really feel, they dont like anything outside of lego lol and be honest instead of playing this game of, wellllll thats not okay for this other non lego brand but if lego did it, its okay lol.
