We all seemed to have gotten out of it ok. We’re lucky to have been around during this experimental time in cartoon history I’m just sad that the next they are playing it too safe with the next generation.
"Anyone need surgery?........or a hair cut?...." Dr barber was always one of my favorites. I loved all the weird and unsettling characters that would pass stormalong. Truly an underrated show.
That aired when me and my siblings where teens. And seeing the juxtaposition of a sweet angel, going “YES.” Made us laugh so hard. We quoted that episode for like a year
This was one of my favorite shows back in middle school alongside Chowder. It felt familiar to me thanks to the SpongeBob/Ren & Stimpy-like gross and unsettling close-ups and the surrealist humor. Also K’nuckles sharing a voice actor with The Flying Dutchman always stuck out to me. Great show!
The SpongeBob connection can probably be attributed to how Kent Osborne (who wrote on seasons 2-3 of SpongeBob) worked on this show as a writer and producer.
To this day, the hyperrealistic cat with soulless eyes and sharp teeth fits to the category of the "scariest cartoon moments" next to King Ramses from _Courage the Cowardly Dog._

Flapjack was most definitely an acquired taste, one that not everyone had. And generally the opinions on it are mixed. However, it did inadvertently save Cartoon Network from itself some years later by helping to further the careers of two creators who many may know: J.G. Quintel and Pendleton Ward, the former creating Regular Show and the latter creating Adveture Time, on which another creator, Rebecca Sugar, would work and eventually create her own series, Steven Universe which would help Cartoon Network crawl further away from its near complete meltdown after the disastrous live action era.

That Modest Mouse conection is very interesting, because one of the recurring themes of Isaac Brook´s music is actually the sea. By the time that Flapjack hit Cartoon Network, Modest Mouse already put out the album "We Were Dead Even Before the Ship Even Sank". So it really made sense that Isaac would be fan of the show. Also dont you love the artstyle of Flapjack inspired by pirates, tattoos and old sea art? I swear that no other show looks like that.
As an avid fan of Modest Mouse, I had no idea about the connection between the two until recently. I had forgotten about this show until I found it on Hulu and binge watched it. Every time I'd put it on, I couldn't help but be reminded of Modest Mouse just by the general aesthetic and storyline. When I got to "All Hands on Deck" and heard the intro, my brain just about exploded. After looking into it I also learned that the theme song is inspired by "Big Rock Candy Mountain" which was in O Brother Where Art Thou. It's all connected, man!
You forgot to mention how Flapjack lead to the creation of Adventure Time, Regular show, and Steven Universe, and a few other favorites I can't think of rn. But, they all have roots in Flapjack and were many of these creator's big steps into the industry.
This show was so trippy and good. I got it on Hulu and I always find myself rewatching the show every now and then. My favorite episode was “the west was fun.”

Hunting for crabs in the rocks, seeing the weathered fishermen leaving their boats, reading about pirate ghosts that haunted bar rooms, and working on my families marina docks talking to the old boaters. Good times
Flapjack is one of my favorite Cartoon Network shows. It was really interesting to me because of how strange and creepy it was. I love how this show could both make me laugh and terrify me at the same time.
This channel is the closest thing I have to an antidepressant right now :') I've loved each show you made videos on over the last few days. I loved the style of this show and I've been looking for media as bizarre as this. Buddy shows/movies are my absolute favorite. This is one of the shows that made my childhood. And my favorite character will always be Doctor Barber! That guy was always an interesting person to say the least.
Loved how disturbing the show could be at times. Favorite moment was knuckles telling his story of him fighting a shark while the music in the background was just his name being sung over and over.
Loved it, when I was doing illustration in college, this was a big inspiration for me, really loved the water colored backgrounds they used for everything. Save for cell art. It was a true work of art, every frame. Hope we get a spiritual successor one day.
Fuckin LOVED Flapjack! This was such a dope episode. Love your work and dedication to churning out so much content! I hope you've been re-discovering more about yourself again through out the 25 days of Fringemas!
I caught this show when the first episode aired and I was hooked from the start. Between the odd setting, the esoteric humor and the animation style it was the best CN show of the era. To think it was axed to make way for the worst era in CN history is truly sad. The show had yet to run its course when they canceled it. Modest Mouse has been my favorite band for years so when Isaac Brock covered the theme song I was ecstatic; I immediately recognized his voice. I still get the main theme song and that cover stuck in my head occasionally.
I kept watching the show, mostly because I was hoping to see a multipart episode where they finally find the Candy Island. Imagine my disappointment. My favorite episode would have to be the episode where Flapjack and K'Nuckles hunt for candy wrappers, since Peppermint Larry believes the wrappers to create a map to Candy Island. While this ultimately wasn't so, the idea of the map being cut down to candy wrappers is to this day one of the best treasure hunt ideas I have ever heard.
I loved Flapjack so much when it was on. I was always really bummed that it ended. Although I later found out how many people that worked on the show went on to create there own shows, or work on other shows I love.

This was such an awesome cartoon. One if my favorites actually, just below Chowder, though nit by much. I ?loved* the crazy art style, tone, and especially the random yet perfectly placed bits of unsettling visuals 😆 It was just as 100% unique as its creator.
Chowder and Flapjack were like the perfect duo cartoon to me as a kid. The two golden children that kinda defined that era of CN for me. So different but they were both just so good. Kinda like how I lump Regular Show and Adventure Time together.
this channel is sent from the gods. I used to watch a lot of cartoon network when I was little but never remembered the names of the shows, you're basically laying out all of my favorite childhood shows that I thought I'd lost forever. thank you so much
I honestly loved this show, it was one of the only ones I liked and watched while it aired. I was strangely picky as a child, much hasn't changed in my adult life, I suppose, but I give a lot more cartoons a second chance. Regardless if the show puts me off at first.
back again after a rewatch of my own and MAN there were so many recurring themes and undertones that's depth were completely lost on me as a kid that make more sense or hit a lot harder now over a decade later -- especially Cap'n K'nuckles blatant struggles with alcoh-- er, sugar-ism and his turbulent relationships with Bubbie and Peppermint Larry/Candy Wife in particular. absolutely incredibly show and the rewatch was more than worth my time thank you for the push to do so! (albeit nearly 6 months later lol)
Every zoom-in to see the details of any character was what made this cartoon for me. There were a lot of dark concepts in Flapjack. One of my favorites.
I remember.... Flapjack being one of the first cartoons I would actively avoid watching due to disgust of it's grotesque art style, including the mentioned Lazlow, Chowder, and Gumball. Looking back, it's even stranger than I remember. I can vaguely see the hints of Grim Adventures and Adventure Time, but the style of Flapjack... just leans too heavily into body dysmorphia and other elements that made it visually unappealing and outright repulsive when they did the hyperrealism moments.
That 1st commerical break thing with the Flapjack figure brought back so many memories, I forgot about those things being all over the cartoon network in-between segments
I used to love those seconds where they would stop a scene to give you a gritty and disgusting close up of character's skin or weird looking body parts, my mom got me into horror since I was very young, "The Thing" being one of my favorite horror movies made me love flapjack for its "body horror" I don't know many people who even remember this show but at least in my case it lives rent free in my head, I always remember it fondly and I think it was one of my favorite shows as a kid.
This show was kinda creepy but I liked it. It DID leave me with this message, and this was an ACTUAL quote from one episode: "Don't go west, the west is evil."
Just found your channel. I don't really selectively binge. Moreso I just click what seems interesting in my recommended. You videos look and are incredibly interesting and informative about things I grew up obsessed with. Keep up the great work!

I was really scared of this show, especially candy wife. Absolute nightmare fuel.
I loved the grungy pirate aesthetic of this show. hardly anything is like it at all, and I love it.
Was pretty creeped watching this show as a kid . Until this day I can’t forget the drinking sea water episode and the mechanical genie episode.
this channel is sent from the gods.
I used to watch a lot of cartoon network when I was little but never remembered the names of the shows, you're basically laying out all of my favorite childhood shows that I thought I'd lost forever. thank you so much
I remember being really intrigued by the animation and thinking overall it was a great concept, but it was WEIRD.
It was pure perfection, everything even jump scares were too fun for me,wish they had continued the show
This show was definitely a fever dream. I loved it so much.
I absolutely loved it as a kid, the artstyle was always fascinating to me
I honestly loved this show, it was one of the only ones I liked and watched while it aired. I was strangely picky as a child, much hasn't changed in my adult life, I suppose, but I give a lot more cartoons a second chance. Regardless if the show puts me off at first.
Just finished rewatching this series for the 6th time. Truly my cartoon love 💗🌸✨
Love Your Vids Dude
Thanks so much!
back again after a rewatch of my own and MAN there were so many recurring themes and undertones that's depth were completely lost on me as a kid that make more sense or hit a lot harder now over a decade later -- especially Cap'n K'nuckles blatant struggles with alcoh-- er, sugar-ism and his turbulent relationships with Bubbie and Peppermint Larry/Candy Wife in particular. absolutely incredibly show and the rewatch was more than worth my time thank you for the push to do so! (albeit nearly 6 months later lol)
Loved this show, its god such a unique art style and a "different" sense of humor.
Every zoom-in to see the details of any character was what made this cartoon for me. There were a lot of dark concepts in Flapjack. One of my favorites.
I loved flapjack. It was absolutely insane to me that there wasn’t a Halloween episode. It seems like the perfect holiday for flap and k’nuckles
Oh bro every episode was a Halloween show!! Besides the story telling episode with the tickles defeating the scary story telling

I find it so dope that you are able to find the OG commerical breaks for all these shows
I remember....
First
Congratulations You Marvelous Commenter You.
I remember the still, realistic picture of a creepy cat with no eyes giving me nightmares.
This is my all time favorite kids cartoon. The art style is incredible, and really makes me feel a special way. The heart of the show has entered me
I used to love those seconds where they would stop a scene to give you a gritty and disgusting close up of character's skin or weird looking body parts, my mom got me into horror since I was very young, "The Thing" being one of my favorite horror movies made me love flapjack for its "body horror" I don't know many people who even remember this show but at least in my case it lives rent free in my head, I always remember it fondly and I think it was one of my favorite shows as a kid.
