- This video is a walking tour in Southbank that includes a stop at the Clink Prison Memorial and the Crossbones Memorial Graveyard. MORE LONDON WALKS - • Playlist
Want to book a private tour with Sinead? Contact our London Manager, Margaret: FTBFLondon@Gmail.Com.
The tour starts in Southbank at the remains of the Palace of Winchester, in an area once known as the Liberty of the Clink, where you will learn about the palace and the Bishops of Winchester.
Next, you will be taken on a short tour through the Clink Prison Museum, one of the most notorious prisons in London's history.
The tour ends at the Crossbones Graveyard, today a memorial to the Winchester Geese, female prostitutes who worked the area with the permission of the bishops. The cemetery was originally simply a pit where the women were not afforded a proper Christian burial.

Wonderfully informative
I can´t help myself, but this woman has something in her voice that I have to listen, trust and believe every word. I wish she was my teacher in school.

Yes she would make an amazing history teacher. She has a real feeling for what she tells you. Engages u and makes u use your own imagination as to what life was truly like. Thats the sign of a good teacher.
So glad I found this channel. Sinead is a gem! The Jack the Ripper tour was AMAZING👏🏽

@@Sineadlondontourguide you are excellent watched your tours on the graveyards how u sleep at night ?
I used to work at the Clink Prison Museum many many years ago. Good to see it's had a nice makeover and some money ploughed into it. When I worked there you could literally get through it in 5 minutes - and there was no loo, you had to lock up and go to Starbucks! Great vid! x
Thanks for adding the personal experience here, Lindsey.
I hope no one was ever locked in accidentally when you popped to the loo 🤭😲
@@clarea1801 They could still be there now…🤔🤔
Informative as usual Thanks again. John in Chicago
Thanks for your continued support, John!
In some regions they still refer to prisons as 'the clink'
Love these videos, so entertaining and informative.
Absolutely apparently the term originates from this prison
Thanks for watching
Sinead
I live in this area I walk pass everyday and we all know it as the clink!
One last point you can go inside!😀👈
Another fantastic tour, so sad knowing those poor people wasn't even given a proper burial may they Rest in peace. Again fantastic thank you Sinead.

Andrew@FTBF New Orleans sent me here! So glad I listened. I thought Clink was just slang for prison, ummm, omg! So sad but need to remember those people and the babies. Thank-you.
Hey Ron. Glad you made it here on a rec from Andrew!!

Absolutely loving this channel. I love the history of bygone London and it’s great to see views and glimpses of places I remember from the times I spent there in the 90’s. Many thanks ✌🏻❤️
We are glad that you found us. Hope you enjoy our other videos.
Thanks!
I've visited both of these. So it was lovely to see and hear someone else's opinion. The clink prison was almost suffocating. The feeling of dread was awful as we left.
The crossbones cemetery, is so bittersweet. These poor poor people.
Why were these women used and tossed aside like rub ish and the men who 'used' them went on with no shame. Makes me mad.
Beautiful buildings and amazing capture! Wonderful capture! 🥰👌
Thank you for watching

@@ToursbyFootLondon Will do.
That was a really lovely & fascinating video/vlog. I’m so pleased to learn of the Cemetry for those poor women who were just trying to earn enough money to survive. I love the ribbons & feel it’s such a thoughtful gesture. That clink museum tour was definitely a bit disturbing & I could almost feel the chill in there just watching. You are like a little walking encyclopaedia & have superb knowledge. I love your voice & accent & you always come across as being so natural & genuine. Thank you for another wonderful tour.
Thank you for the kind compliments, Joanna.
I've just 'stumbled' across your videos Sinead and they are awesome. I've been to London a few times over 40 years ago and tbh, I hated it, but I never got to see things that you show on your videos (I've only seen this one and the Coventry Garden one so far, oh and the Graveyard one that has Karl Marx in it). I'm going over to the UK next year (covid providing) and London was most definitely not on my list, but you have changed my mind to that and I think I will spend 1 or 2 days there before I head back to Australia. I will bring a ribbon with me too when I stop at the Crossbones Graveyard to say a prayer for those poor people. You don't just 'visit' places, you bring things to life Sinead, thank you. 🤗

An ancestor of mine, reverend John lothropp served time in the Clink. I’m a direct descendant from his first wife, English woman named Hannah Howse. She passed away and he remarried and moved to America. Interesting man and life story. I visited the Clink in August of 2020.

The Cross bones story inspired Frank Turner to write a song on his album No man's land called The graveyard of the outcast dead. It's a fitting tribute to the Winchester Geese long may they rest in peace.

Very cool I enjoyed this very much!!
Thanks for being a regular, Ray.
Another little point is that the later clink prison site was then covered by the Courage brewery in Park St - and the whole area was famous for trading hops. The main Hop Exchange being near the London Bridge end of Southwark Street. Before numerical phone numbers came in the phone code for the area was HOP. Not a lot of folk remember that nowadays. I used to visit this area in the fifties with my dad who managed a shop in London Bridge Railway Approach and it was much as it had been for two hundred years. How different it is now!!!!!
Wow! Thanks for sharing, Chris :)

Now I know where they got the name the clink. If you get thrown in jail here they say they’re going to throw you in the clink. I loved the museum you hear about these things but you never get to see them. Thanks for the great video and God bless the women and children who were so mistreated
You are welcome as usual, Diane.
British history is incredible! It plays a huge role in the Founding of my country, The United States of America! Also Australia, NZ... so much has come from Great Britain. One of my favorites is Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher and Enoch Powell.... of course Queen Elizabeth 👸!
The clink museum was a female debtors prison back in the day. But as part of British history it explains so much more off the prison and torture we had many years ago.
